Treat cloud saves, advertising, multiplayer, leaderboards, daily challenges, updates and account sign-in as separate features with their own connection requirements.
This guide gives you a repeatable discovery and verification method, plus documented indie leads for Android and iOS. Availability and behavior can change with updates, so record the version and date whenever you check a game.

Define “offline” before you search
Use a testable definition: a game is offline-capable when its core play loop remains usable without a network connection after installation and any required initial download. Android’s official offline-first guidance uses the same principle: “An offline-first app is an app that is able to perform all, or a critical subset of its core functionality without access to the internet.” For a game, the critical subset is the activity you downloaded it to play—such as entering a level, making moves, fighting, or completing a run—not necessarily every supporting service.

This definition prevents two common mistakes. A game can open to a menu while refusing to start a level until it contacts a server. Conversely, a game can be genuinely playable offline while its optional cloud backup or leaderboard is unavailable. Judge the core loop first, then document the boundaries around it.

What an offline-capable game should do
- Start a normal single-player session without Wi-Fi or mobile data.
- Allow the main game loop to continue after a temporary loss of signal.
- Save progress locally and load that progress after you close and reopen the app, unless the game clearly labels saving as cloud-only.
- Provide the offline content promised in its listing, such as the campaign, levels or roguelike runs.
What “offline” does not automatically promise
- No connection on the very first launch. A game may need a one-time data download or license check.
- Cloud saves across devices. Cloud synchronization is an online service even when local play works without a connection.
- No advertising. Some games request ads only when a connection is available, while others show an offline placeholder or disable the ad reward.
- Multiplayer, leaderboards, daily challenges or server-hosted events.
- Ability to install, update or restore purchases without internet access.
Why store listings can be misleading
Google Play and the Apple App Store are excellent discovery surfaces, but a short “offline” label rarely specifies which features were tested. A listing may describe a title as offline because the campaign works without a signal while omitting an online-only login, cloud-save option or first-launch download. Store metadata can also lag behind a new version.
Use a store description to create a shortlist, then open the developer’s own page or support documentation. Look for explicit wording about offline play, account requirements, first launch, initial data, saves, advertising, multiplayer and updates. A named developer or studio statement is more useful than an unsourced listicle because it identifies who is responsible for the claim.
A five-step workflow for finding dependable offline indies
1. Search the official stores with combinations of terms
Start in Google Play or the Apple App Store. Combine “offline game,” “no internet,” “single-player,” “indie” and a genre term such as “puzzle,” “roguelike,” “RPG,” “platformer” or “strategy.” Searching several combinations matters because developers do not use a single standardized tag.

Note the platform, price, in-app purchases, last-update information and whether the listing calls the game single-player. Save the title and developer name in a shortlist; do not yet treat the result as verified.
2. Read the developer’s own page
Search for the studio’s official site, support page or documentation. Confirm whether “offline” refers to the entire game or only a mode. Check for phrases such as “first launch,” “download additional data,” “account required,” “cloud save,” “ads,” “multiplayer,” and “internet connection required for updates.” If the developer explains a limitation, copy that limitation into your notes rather than interpreting “offline” broadly.
3. Separate every connectivity dependency
Make a small checklist for each candidate:
- Installation: Can the app be downloaded only while connected? This is normally expected.
- First launch: Does it need a license check, asset download or account sign-in before the menu appears?
- Regular play: Can you start and complete the core loop in airplane mode?
- Saving: Is progress stored locally, in the cloud, or both?
- Advertising: Are ads optional, rewarded, suppressed offline or required to continue?
- Online modes: Are multiplayer, leaderboards, daily challenges or events separate from the offline campaign?
- Maintenance: Will the app require a connection after an update or when restoring an in-app purchase?
Official support examples show why this separation matters. One support FAQ explains that download, installation and updates require internet while the completed game can be played offline. Square Enix support similarly states: “An Internet connection is required on both Android and iOS to make use of the the cloud save functionality, but isn’t needed for regular gameplay.” The exact requirements vary by title, so use these statements as a model for the questions you should ask, not as a blanket rule for every game.

4. Perform an airplane-mode check
Install and complete any first-run setup while connected. Then switch off Wi-Fi and mobile data, or enable airplane mode and re-enable only the services you deliberately want to test. Start a new session, close the game, reopen it, inspect save/load behavior and try the advertised offline content. Record each failure separately—for example, “campaign works, cloud save unavailable” is a successful offline result with a documented limitation.
5. Recheck after updates
Offline behavior, account requirements, advertising and platform availability can change in a new version. Record the game version and the date of your check. Repeat the airplane-mode test after a substantial update, an operating-system upgrade or a change in the store description. A result without a version number is difficult to trust later.
How to run the airplane-mode test correctly
Prepare a clean, reproducible test
- Install the game from the official store while connected.
- Open it once with internet access and allow every clearly indicated initial download to finish.
- Complete required sign-in or entitlement steps, but do not assume that completing them proves offline play.
- Write down the app version shown in the store or in the game’s settings, along with the date.
- Close the app completely so the next launch is not merely resuming an already loaded session.
Test the core loop and persistence
- Enable airplane mode, then confirm that Wi-Fi and mobile data are actually off.
- Launch the game from the device home screen.
- Start a new game, level, run or other normal session.
- Play long enough to trigger a meaningful checkpoint or manual save.
- Exit to the operating system, wait briefly, and reopen the game while still offline.
- Load the saved progress and verify that the expected state is present.
- Try each advertised offline mode. Do not count a title as fully offline if only a tutorial or demo works.
Log boundaries instead of using a yes-or-no label
Use notes such as “core campaign works; daily challenge unavailable; local save retained; rewarded ad button disabled.” This is more useful than a single green check because it tells a traveler exactly what to expect. If the game refuses to start, capture the wording of the error and repeat the test once after returning online; a one-time asset or license step may have been incomplete.
Compare candidates on the details that affect travel
A simple comparison sheet keeps similar-looking claims from being mixed together. Use “not stated” when the developer has not documented a point; do not infer an answer from silence.

The following titles and studios have published offline claims. Treat them as leads, not permanent guarantees: verify the current store listing and run the airplane-mode procedure on your device.

The Google Play listing describes Endless Wander as an offline roguelike RPG and says: “No internet connection is required! Play offline anytime or use cloud saves to keep your progress on all your devices.” The listing identifies Android availability and labels it single-player.

The wording clearly separates ordinary play from cloud synchronization. You can regard the roguelike session as the offline feature to test, while treating cross-device progress as an online feature that may not be available in airplane mode. Check whether the current build requires an initial data download before your trip.
Everything Must Word and Rollup: Tilt Ball Arcade — Ravenware LLC
Ravenware describes itself as an independent mobile studio serving Android and iOS. Its site says Everything Must Word is playable offline and describes Rollup as free and fully offline. Because a studio statement does not establish every current store detail, verify each title separately for platform, price, ads, saves and the date of the latest release.
Biriki Games titles
Biriki Games describes itself as an independent iOS mobile-game developer. The studio says its games run offline with no login, no account and no server required for saves, and notes that some titles are also on Google Play.
There is an important qualification: the studio also says a connection may be used to load ads where a title includes them. Therefore, “offline” does not necessarily mean “ad-free.” During testing, check whether an ad-reward button disappears, becomes unavailable or changes the flow when connectivity is disabled. Confirm the individual title’s current platform listing because the studio’s catalog can differ by operating system.
Vaultris — garajprojeleri
The developer presents Vaultris as an indie minimalist grid puzzle for iOS and Android with 100 handcrafted levels. Its page states: “Fully offline, no ads, no subscriptions, no accounts.” The same page describes a one-time in-app purchase for the full library.
Connectivity and payment are separate questions here. The offline claim addresses play, advertising and accounts; the one-time purchase concerns access to the complete level library. Confirm that the levels you want are unlocked before leaving connectivity, and remember that restoring a purchase may require an internet connection.

Gündoğdu Games
Gündoğdu Games identifies itself as a small independent iOS and Android developer and says its games can be played without an account and offline. Use the studio page as a lead, then inspect the individual store listing for current release status, first-launch requirements, ads, saves and any online modes. Do not assume every title in a studio catalog has identical behavior.
Understand saves, accounts and cloud features
Local saves are the key travel safeguard
A local save is stored on the device and should remain available when the network is disabled. Test it by making visible progress, closing the app completely and loading again in airplane mode. Some games autosave only at checkpoints; others require a manual save or an end-of-run screen, so perform the action the game documents.
Cloud saves are a separate service
Cloud saves synchronize progress between devices or protect it after a reinstall, but they require communication with a server. If you play offline, the device may queue changes locally, refuse synchronization or show an account error. Decide whether losing cross-device syncing is acceptable for the trip, and synchronize before disconnecting if you need the latest progress on another device.
Accounts and expiring sessions
A title that launches without a login can still request authentication later for purchases, cloud saves or online modes. Test a cold launch while offline rather than only resuming an open session. If an account is mandatory, sign in and complete the first launch before travel, then verify that the session remains usable without refreshing a token.

Ads can change offline behavior
Some developers load advertisements only when a connection is present. In that case, offline play may be uninterrupted, but a rewarded bonus may be unavailable. Other games may pause at an ad checkpoint or show an error. Test the exact action you rely on, such as reviving a character or receiving extra hints, and do not count a disabled reward as a broken core loop unless the game makes it mandatory.

Purchases do not define connectivity
A free game can be fully playable offline, while a paid game can still require a server check. One-time purchases, subscription checks and purchase restoration may need connectivity even when previously unlocked content is usable offline. Complete the purchase and open the content once while connected, then test it again without a signal.

Online modes should be listed separately
Multiplayer matchmaking, competitive leaderboards, daily challenges, rotating events and server-generated content normally need a connection. An offline-capable game can legitimately disable those features while leaving its campaign or puzzle board intact. Record the split so you choose a game for the mode you actually intend to play.
Choose the right offline game for a plane or dead-signal trip
For a long flight
Prioritize a game whose first launch, campaign and local save have all passed the airplane-mode test. Open it once offline before boarding, verify that your intended content is available and keep at least one alternative title installed. Avoid relying on cloud-only progress or daily challenges that reset while disconnected.
For a short commute
A title with a quick resume and reliable autosave may matter more than a large campaign. Test closing and reopening after a short session. If ads are optional, confirm that the core loop does not stop when the reward prompt cannot load.
For travel with multiple devices
Decide whether you need synchronized progress. If so, use cloud saves while connected before departure, then treat the offline device as the authoritative copy until you can sync again. A game advertised as offline may still require internet for every cross-device transfer.
Troubleshoot a game that fails offline
It will not pass the title screen
- Reconnect once and finish every indicated asset or data download.
- Complete required account or license setup.
- Close the app fully, disable connectivity and retry.
- Check the developer’s support wording for a first-launch requirement.
The game opens but a level will not start
- Confirm that the level is not an online event, daily challenge or streamed asset.
- Try a previously downloaded campaign level.
- Look for an in-game download manager and complete it while connected.
- Record the exact error; it may identify a server check rather than a general offline limitation.
Progress disappears offline
- Determine whether the game saves only after a checkpoint or manual action.
- Perform that save action while connected, then repeat it offline.
- Check whether the game labels the save as cloud-only.
- Do not uninstall or clear app data while troubleshooting; those actions can remove local progress.
An ad or purchase button fails
- Test the game’s core loop without selecting the ad or purchase control.
- Assume rewarded ads and purchase restoration may need internet.
- Verify that paid content was unlocked before disconnecting.
Keep your offline-game list trustworthy
Maintain a short record for every title: developer, platform, app version, check date, first-launch requirement, tested offline modes, save behavior, ads, account status and online-only features. Recheck after updates or when a traveler reports a different result. This method is more dependable than a permanent “best offline games” list because it reflects the build actually installed on your device.
No reliable published statistic establishes what share of indie mobile games work offline. Title-level developer and store claims, followed by a reproducible airplane-mode check, are therefore the soundest way to choose. Start with the documented leads above, verify the exact version you will carry, and judge success by whether the core play loop and local progress survive without a network.
