Pixel shader, Shader Model, DirectX and feature level: what is the difference?
A pixel shader is the programmable graphics stage that calculates the color and other properties of rendered pixels. Older Windows games commonly list requirements such as Pixel Shader 2.0 or Pixel Shader 3.0.
Modern graphics documentation usually uses Shader Model instead. Shader Model is the broader capability family covering programmable shader stages, including pixel and vertex shaders. Examples include Shader Model 5.0, 5.1 and 6.x. A game’s “Pixel Shader 3.0” requirement is generally referring to the relevant Direct3D 9-era shader capability.

DirectX is Microsoft’s graphics API and runtime family. A PC can have a DirectX 12 runtime installed even when its GPU exposes only older hardware capabilities.
A Direct3D feature level is a standardized package of GPU functionality, written with an underscore—for example, 9_3, 11_0 or 12_1. It is not the same thing as “DirectX 12.1.” Microsoft’s feature-level documentation explains the hardware, runtime and Shader Model relationships.

Check your pixel-shader capability with DxDiag
DxDiag is the best no-download starting point on Windows. Microsoft’s instructions are available in its DirectX Diagnostic Tool guide.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
dxdiagand press Enter. - If Windows asks whether it should check digitally signed drivers, choose the appropriate response and let the tool load.
- Open the Display tab. On a system with more than one graphics device, inspect Display 1, Display 2 and any additional display tabs.
- Record the Name, Manufacturer, Chip Type, Driver Model or WDDM version, driver version and date, and especially Feature Levels if that field is present.
A modern result might look like this:
Feature Levels: 12_1, 12_0, 11_1, 11_0, 10_1, ...
Current DxDiag layouts do not always include a field literally called “Pixel Shader Version.” That is normal. Use the GPU name and Feature Levels as your starting evidence, then verify the exact card in its official specifications. NVIDIA also recommends using DxDiag to check a graphics card’s DirectX feature level.
Do not stop at the System tab’s “DirectX Version” line. The System tab reports the installed runtime; the Display tabs identify the graphics device and expose driver and capability information.

Find the graphics card in Device Manager
If DxDiag is unavailable or unclear, Device Manager can identify the hardware:
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Write down the complete name of every listed GPU.
Device Manager normally identifies the adapter but does not directly report its Pixel Shader version. Search the exact model—including laptop, mobile, Max-Q, workstation or integrated-graphics designations—in the GPU maker’s specifications.
Use GPU-Z when you want a clearer capability report
TechPowerUp GPU-Z is a free utility for identifying graphics hardware and reporting graphics API and driver information. Download the current version from TechPowerUp; its version number and interface may change.
- Run GPU-Z after downloading it. It can be used as a standalone utility.
- On the Graphics Card tab, note the complete GPU name and driver version.
- Check the DirectX-support or feature information shown by your version.
- Open the Advanced tab, if available, and look for DirectX, WDDM, Shader Model or related capability entries.
GPU-Z’s labels vary by release. Its reporting features are documented in TechPowerUp’s release information and Advanced-tab notes. Treat the utility as a convenient diagnostic aid, but keep the exact GPU model: the manufacturer’s specifications and Microsoft’s capability documentation are stronger references when values conflict.
How feature levels relate to Pixel Shader and Shader Model numbers
Feature levels provide a useful modern way to estimate the shader generation, but they are not a universal one-to-one Pixel Shader conversion.

For example, 11_0 is a useful broad indicator of Shader Model 5.0-class capability, but it should not be treated as an absolute conversion rule for every device or API. Shader Model 5.1 and Shader Model 6 support have additional hardware, driver and runtime conditions. For disputed or unusual cases, check Microsoft’s feature-level table and the GPU manufacturer’s specifications.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

If a game asks for “Pixel Shader 2.0” or “Pixel Shader 3.0,” use this process:
- Identify the complete GPU model with DxDiag, Device Manager or GPU-Z.
- Find the GPU’s official specifications.
- Confirm its relevant Direct3D feature level or Shader Model support.
- Compare that capability with the game’s stated requirement.
- Check the game’s other requirements separately, including operating-system support, driver behavior, CPU instruction sets, required Direct3D API, texture or render-target formats, launcher limitations and anti-cheat support.
A modern GPU often supports older shader generations, but shader support alone does not guarantee that an old game will start or render correctly. Conversely, seeing DirectX 12 in DxDiag does not prove that every DirectX 12 feature—or every Shader Model 6 capability—is available.
Also distinguish pixel and vertex shader requirements. A game may list both separately. They are related programmable stages, but neither should be confused with a GPU’s number of CUDA cores, stream processors or other hardware-unit counts.
What to do when the shader information is missing
- Inspect every Display tab in DxDiag, especially on a laptop with integrated and discrete graphics.
- Confirm the exact adapter name in Device Manager.
- If DxDiag reports Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, install the correct graphics driver from the PC, laptop, GPU or motherboard manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and run
dxdiagor GPU-Z again. - Check whether Remote Desktop, a virtual machine, cloud PC or software-rendering environment is exposing a virtual or restricted adapter.
- Compare the physical GPU—not just the currently exposed virtual adapter—with the game’s requirement.
- If the physical hardware lacks the required capability, software cannot add it; use compatible hardware or a system that meets the requirement.
A driver can correct detection problems or expose functionality the hardware already supports. It cannot turn an incompatible GPU into a newer shader-model device.

Laptop, virtual-machine and multi-GPU cautions
Laptops commonly contain Intel integrated graphics alongside an NVIDIA or AMD discrete GPU. The integrated adapter may drive the desktop while the game uses the discrete adapter. Inspect every DxDiag display tab and confirm which GPU the game is configured to use.
The complete model matters. A mobile GPU may differ from a similarly named desktop card, and workstation variants may use different drivers or feature combinations. “Intel graphics,” “Radeon” or “GeForce” is not precise enough.
Remote Desktop sessions, virtual machines and cloud PCs may report a virtual graphics adapter rather than the physical GPU. In that situation, the reported feature level describes the active graphics environment and may be restricted. Check the physical hardware separately through Device Manager, the system manufacturer’s specifications or GPU-Z.

Consumer tools are useful for troubleshooting, but a Direct3D application should query the device it actually creates. Microsoft documents hardware capability checks in its guide to checking hardware feature support.
The DirectX Shader Compiler, dxc.exe, can compile HLSL for Shader Model 6.0 and later profiles, as described in the DirectX Shader Compiler project. Compilation support is not proof that an end user’s GPU can run the shader: runtime execution still requires compatible hardware, Windows support and a suitable driver.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I upgrade my Pixel Shader version with software?
No. A driver may fix detection or expose features the GPU already supports, but it cannot add shader hardware that the GPU lacks.
Is DirectX 12 the same as Shader Model 6?
No. DirectX 12 is an API and runtime family. Shader Model support depends on the GPU’s feature level, driver and runtime support.
Why does GPU-Z show a different value from a game?
The game may be checking a particular API, profile or compatibility condition, while GPU-Z reports general adapter information. Compare the exact GPU and the game’s own documented requirements.
Why are two GPUs listed on my laptop?
Most commonly, one is integrated graphics and the other is a discrete GPU. Check which adapter the game is actually using.
Does more VRAM mean a higher Pixel Shader version?
No. VRAM capacity and shader capability are separate specifications.
Can a modern GPU run Pixel Shader 3.0 games?
Often, but not universally. API, driver, operating-system, CPU, launcher and rendering-compatibility issues can still prevent an old game from working.
How do I check shader support on Linux or macOS?
DxDiag is Windows-specific. On Linux, inspect the GPU and renderer through the system’s graphics tools and the API in use; on macOS, check the Mac’s supported Metal capability. Use the game’s platform-specific documentation rather than applying Windows feature-level labels automatically.
