Check the game’s current official store page, record every minimum and recommended requirement, then compare those values with your PC’s actual CPU, graphics card, memory, storage, Windows edition, 64-bit status and graphics features. On Windows, dxdiag gives you the core information. Treat the result as an informed compatibility judgment—not a guaranteed frame-rate promise—because drivers, patches, thermals, background software and unusual hardware combinations can still change the outcome.
Start with the game’s current system requirements
The most reliable starting point is the publisher’s current store listing. On Steam, scroll to the game’s System Requirements section and capture both the Minimum and Recommended rows. Steam Support specifically advises checking hardware requirements as well as compatible operating systems. Do not rely on a retailer’s short feature list, an old review, a user comment or a requirements page cached from an earlier release.

Requirements can change after launch when a game receives an engine update, new content, an anti-cheat change or a graphics overhaul. Note the date you checked the listing, especially for an early-access title or a game that has been patched for several years.

Record every requirement, not only the graphics card

Minimum and recommended are not performance guarantees
Minimum generally describes a baseline at which the developer expects the game to be eligible to run, often with reduced settings. It does not specify a universal resolution, preset or frame rate. Recommended is a better starting point for the developer’s intended experience, but it still does not promise a particular number of frames per second. Developers use different test scenes, quality presets and assumptions when writing these labels.

Do not convert “minimum” into “this will run at 60 fps,” or “recommended” into “this will run at 1440p.” The listing usually lacks enough test conditions to support either conclusion.
Inventory your Windows PC accurately
Compare the store page with the machine you actually use, not with a model name on a laptop box or a planned upgrade. Record the exact CPU and GPU names, installed RAM, available storage, Windows edition and build, 64-bit status, and graphics feature information.
Use DxDiag for a complete first check
Windows includes the DirectX Diagnostic Tool, commonly opened with the command dxdiag. Microsoft documents it as a way to inspect DirectX information and hardware details.

Windows key + Rto open the Run dialog. - Type
dxdiagand press Enter. Approve the prompt to check whether your drivers are digitally signed if Windows displays one. - On the System tab, record the operating system, system manufacturer and model, processor, installed memory and the DirectX version shown under System Information.
- Open the Display tab (or each Display tab if the PC has more than one graphics device). Record the GPU name, display memory information, driver date and version, and the listed feature details.
- Use Save All Information if you need a text copy for a support request or a side-by-side comparison.
DxDiag may show integrated and dedicated graphics separately. A laptop can therefore list an integrated GPU on one display tab while games are expected to use a discrete GPU on another. Identify which adapter the game will actually use before judging the match.
Confirm Windows edition, architecture and build
Open Settings > System > About and record Windows specifications, including edition and version, plus System type. “64-bit operating system, x64-based processor” confirms a 64-bit Windows installation. If a game explicitly requires 64-bit Windows, an otherwise suitable 32-bit installation does not satisfy that requirement.

For a second view of the OS version, press Windows key + R, enter winver, and note the version and build shown. Compare the result with the exact operating-system wording on the store page rather than assuming that every edition of Windows is interchangeable.
Check storage where the game will be installed
In File Explorer > This PC, check free space on the specific drive that will hold the game. A listing’s storage figure can describe the installed footprint, while the installer and a later patch may require additional temporary room. If the title uses a separate launcher or stores shader caches on the system drive, leave extra capacity there as well. Do not mark storage as “met” merely because the total disk capacity is large; the relevant value is free space on the destination volume.
Compare the two lists field by field
Make one inventory for your PC and one transcription of the game’s requirements. Then evaluate each field independently. A PC can pass five categories and still fail because of one unsupported operating system, missing graphics feature or inadequate CPU.
Compare processor models, not marketing families
Read the complete model designation, including generation or series where the listing provides it. “Core i5,” “Ryzen 5” or a similar family label is not precise enough. The game’s named processor is a reference point, not a simple rule that every newer-sounding part wins; mobile CPUs, low-power variants and older high-end chips can differ substantially.
If your CPU is not named, look for its generation, core and thread configuration and relative age. Treat a close-but-uncertain result as “borderline,” not as a guaranteed pass. CPU-heavy simulation, large strategy maps and high-player-count scenes can expose a processor limit even when the graphics card is above the recommended model.

Compare the exact graphics processor and memory
Match the GPU model rather than the brand. A graphics card with the same family name can have a different memory size, laptop power limit or generation suffix. Record dedicated VRAM when Windows reports it, but do not use VRAM alone as a performance score: the GPU architecture and feature support are also important.

Integrated graphics share system memory and may report values differently from a dedicated card. If the game lists a dedicated GPU as its minimum, integrated graphics should be treated as an exception requiring evidence from the developer or a maintained compatibility reference, not as an automatic equivalent.
Compare RAM and free disk space separately
Installed RAM is a system-wide resource, while graphics memory is a GPU resource. A game asking for 16 GB of system memory is not satisfied by a graphics card advertising 16 GB of VRAM. Likewise, a drive with enough total capacity can still fail an installation if the destination partition is nearly full.
Confirm API and feature requirements
Read any DirectX, Vulkan or other graphics-API requirement exactly as written. Steam Support cautions that a card can meet a DirectX requirement while lacking the pixel-shader level a game needs. The DirectX version shown by dxdiag is therefore only one part of the check.
Look for feature-level, shader-model, ray-tracing, hardware-accelerated video or other capability notes. A newer API installed in Windows does not automatically mean that every GPU in the system supports the required feature. Conversely, an engine’s theoretical API capability is not proof that the released game supports that path; use the game’s own requirements and compatibility documentation.

Classify the result: pass, borderline or fail
After the field-by-field comparison, put the title into one of three practical categories. This prevents a single optimistic match from hiding a serious unknown.
Likely eligible
Your OS and architecture match, every stated minimum hardware item is met or exceeded, the required API and features are present, and you have adequate free storage. This is the strongest checklist result, but it still does not establish a frame rate or rule out a driver or launcher problem.
Borderline or uncertain
One or more parts are close to the minimum, a model comparison is unclear, the listing omits a feature detail, or your system relies on integrated graphics where the developer names a dedicated card. Look for official clarifications, patches and compatibility reports before buying. If you proceed, use a lawful refund window as a fallback, not as a substitute for the comparison.
Does not meet the stated requirements
Your OS, architecture, CPU, GPU, RAM, storage or required feature is below the listed minimum. Do not assume that lowering every graphics setting will solve an unsupported operating system, missing shader feature or incompatible instruction set. A hardware upgrade or a supported computer may be necessary.
Investigate older and unusual games separately
Modern requirement tables are not enough for every title. Older games may depend on legacy DirectX components, 32-bit launchers, discontinued codecs, outdated copy protection, unusual resolutions or a community fix. Some may start only after a compatibility setting, a patch or a replacement wrapper is applied.

Use a maintained compatibility reference
For an older or unusual release, consult a maintained reference such as PCGamingWiki for known operating-system behavior, required fixes, launch options and common graphics problems. Treat community documentation as troubleshooting guidance, not as a replacement for the publisher’s current support information. An edit can describe what worked for one configuration without guaranteeing that it works for yours.
Verify critical claims with the publisher or platform
Confirm important details—supported Windows versions, required launchers, online-service status, anti-cheat limitations and whether a fix is still legal and available—against current publisher or platform documentation. Compatibility notes can become obsolete when Windows, a launcher or a game update changes.
Understand why a matching checklist can still fail
System requirements describe a reference configuration, not every possible PC. Steam Support notes that launch failures can arise from many unique hardware and software combinations. Common variables include:
- Out-of-date, corrupted or incorrectly selected graphics drivers.
- A laptop launching the game on integrated graphics instead of the dedicated adapter.
- Background applications, overlays, capture tools or security software interfering with startup.
- Anti-cheat or launcher services failing to install or update.
- Thermal throttling, unstable overclocks or insufficient power delivery.
- A patch changing memory use, shader compilation or supported hardware.
- Missing legacy runtime components or permissions required by an older game.
These factors explain why “meets minimum” should be read as a compatibility indication, not a promise that the game will launch perfectly on the first attempt.
Take a controlled first-launch approach
- Update Windows and install a current driver from the GPU manufacturer before testing, while avoiding optional driver changes that are known to destabilize your setup.
- Close overlays, recording tools and unnecessary background programs for the first launch.
- Allow the game’s launcher and anti-cheat components to complete their installation and updates.
- Start at the game’s lowest preset and a modest resolution, then raise settings one group at a time.
- Watch for crashes, missing textures, shader errors, severe stutter or unusually high temperatures; these symptoms provide more useful evidence than a checklist alone.
Do not treat a successful menu launch as proof of smooth gameplay. A demanding level, large battle or shader-compilation sequence may stress the system later.
Use the same method when comparing two games
If you are choosing between titles, inventory the PC once and apply that identical inventory to both listings. Comparing one game against a remembered laptop specification and the other against a DxDiag report produces a misleading result.

The game with the lower listed requirements is not automatically the better choice. A title with clear current support may be a safer purchase than one with slightly lower hardware demands but extensive legacy troubleshooting.

- For older games, consult maintained compatibility notes and verify critical fixes with current official documentation.
- Label the outcome likely eligible, borderline or below minimum, and keep the uncertainties visible.
- If you buy, test methodically and regard any applicable refund period as a safety net.
Bottom line
Before buying, compare the game’s current minimum and recommended requirements with a real DxDiag-based inventory of your PC. Check the operating system and 64-bit architecture first, then CPU, GPU, RAM, storage and graphics features. Minimum and recommended labels do not promise a frame rate, and DirectX version alone cannot prove compatibility.
