St. Amelia is not a real town. In Silent Hill: Townfall, it is a fictional settlement on a remote island off Scotland. The real place most often identified as its visual inspiration is St Monans, a coastal village in Fife. That makes St Monans a possible inspiration visit—not the game island, not a one-to-one map, and not proof that every St. Amelia building exists there.
Where is St. Amelia in Silent Hill: Townfall?
St. Amelia is the fictional setting of Silent Hill: Townfall. Konami’s release information places the story on a remote island off Scotland, rather than in a real Scottish town that visitors can enter by following a map marker.

The distinction matters because location articles and fan discussions often collapse three different things into one: a fictional place in the game, a real-world visual reference used by the developers, and a location associated with a film adaptation. They are not interchangeable.

- In-game location: St. Amelia, a fictional community on a remote Scottish island.
- Reported visual inspiration: St Monans in Fife, identified by secondary location reporting.
- Film-only real-world influence: Centralia, Pennsylvania, whose underground mine fire informed the 2006 movie’s version of Silent Hill.
The strongest official explanation for the Scottish setting comes from Jon McKellan, writer and director at Screen Burn. In an official PlayStation interview, he said: “Scotland is where we grew up; it’s the environment most familiar and natural for us to depict.” He also explained the goal behind that choice: “Believing that a place actually exists is what makes players truly care about it, and making players care is the most important thing of all.” Those comments establish why Scotland was chosen, but they do not turn any particular village into the game’s exact map.

That wording also explains why a real-world comparison can be useful even when it is not an answer to the literal question “Where is St. Amelia?” The developers wanted a setting that felt observed rather than generic. Familiar terrain, weather and settlement patterns can be rearranged into fiction while retaining the credibility of a place that seems to have a history beyond the player’s view.
Is St Monans the real town behind St. Amelia?
St Monans is a real coastal village in Fife, Scotland. A secondary location guide identifies it as the reported real-world visual inspiration for St. Amelia. This is the place to consider if you want to visit a community associated with Townfall’s look and atmosphere.
“Reported inspiration” is deliberately narrower than “the real St. Amelia.” The available identification does not establish that the game reproduces the village street by street, that every named landmark was copied, or that the fictional island can be reached by traveling to St Monans. It points to visual influence, not literal geography.

What you can actually visit
You can visit St Monans as a living Scottish community. You cannot visit St. Amelia, because St. Amelia exists only within the game’s fiction. A trip to St Monans therefore offers real architecture, shoreline and local atmosphere, while the game’s island, story spaces and specific arrangements remain fictional or digitally constructed.
Before traveling, check current local access information, opening hours for any public facilities, weather and coastal conditions. Treat residential streets and working waterfront areas as community spaces rather than a themed attraction. Do not assume that a screenshot proves a private building is open to visitors or that a game-inspired route has official status.
Practical planning can involve lodging, rail or car hire, meals, walking equipment and travel insurance, but none of those expenses turns the trip into an official Townfall tour. There is no confirmed game-operated attraction or developer-designated trail described here. A visitor should plan for an ordinary coastal village visit first and a media-inspired comparison second.
How to use the identification without overclaiming
- Label the purpose of the trip accurately. Describe St Monans as a reported visual inspiration for St. Amelia, not as the location of the game’s island.
- Separate observation from attribution. You may compare the village’s visible coastal character with Townfall imagery, but do not present an unverified building match as developer-confirmed.
- Verify conditions close to departure. Local access, weather and transport can change; rely on current local information for practical planning.
- Respect the community. Keep photography unobtrusive, avoid trespassing and remember that people live and work in the places fans want to see.
Why Scotland matters to Townfall
The Scottish setting is not a random substitute for the franchise’s earlier American-looking environments. Screen Burn’s developers said Scotland was the environment they knew best and could depict in detail. Their comments support an approach based on lived familiarity: the setting should feel like a place with ordinary geography and history, not a generic horror backdrop.
That production intention explains why St Monans can be useful to a visitor without being a definitive answer to the question “Where is Silent Hill?” A familiar regional environment can supply textures, building forms, weather and coastline while the game team rearranges those elements into a new fictional place.

McKellan’s comments are evidence about creative intent, not a survey of every location used in production. They support the broad Scottish setting and the desire for authenticity. The separate St Monans identification remains a reported visual connection, so the two claims should be presented at their respective levels of certainty.
Centralia, Pennsylvania: the movie connection, not a confirmed game origin
Centralia is the clearest named real-place connection in Silent Hill’s screen history, but it belongs specifically to the 2006 live-action film. Director Christophe Gans’s notes explain that screenwriter Roger Avary investigated Centralia’s underground coal fire and that the movie used the town and its history as the basis for its real-world version of Silent Hill.
Gans stated: “While we had no intention of keeping the ‘Centralia’ name, we used the town and its history as the basis for our ‘real world’ Silent Hill, changing the state to West Virginia for legal reasons.” The wording is explicit about the film’s adaptation process. It does not say that Centralia was the model for the original games.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat Centralia contributes to the film
The Centralia connection concerns the film’s real-world premise: a town transformed by an underground mine fire and its aftermath. The movie fictionalizes the location and changes its state to West Virginia, so even a visit to Centralia should not be treated as a visit to the film’s exact town.
The film’s visual identity also came from other sources. Production notes describe study of Chernobyl photographs and abandoned psychiatric hospitals in upstate New York. The production then altered existing spaces and built purpose-made sets. Consequently, the movie’s streets, interiors and industrial imagery are composites rather than a documentary recreation of Centralia.
This is why Centralia belongs in a comparison of influences but not in a claim that one Pennsylvania location contains the complete movie world. Its documented contribution is the town’s history and mine-fire premise. The production’s other visual references and constructed environments supplied additional layers that a visitor cannot find in one surviving neighborhood.
What not to say about Centralia
- Do not say Centralia inspired the original Team Silent games; the cited creator interview does not support that claim.
- Do not call Centralia the real location of the 2006 movie’s town; the film changed the state and fictionalized the setting.
- Do not treat every visual feature in the film as evidence of a surviving Centralia landmark; the production used photographs, altered spaces and constructed sets.
Did a real Japanese town inspire the original Silent Hill games?
Keiichiro Toyama, creator of the original Silent Hill, said in an interview that the name received “a hint from a real place in Japan.” The interview does not identify that place, and it does not state that the game’s American-looking town reproduces one Japanese municipality.

That is an important limit. The statement supports a broad naming or cultural reference, not a confirmed tourist destination. No single Japanese town can responsibly be marketed as “the real Silent Hill” on the strength of that interview alone.

The original games’ town should therefore be understood as a constructed setting shaped by multiple influences. Its streets, institutions and landmarks serve the games’ fiction; they are not a publicly identified map of one real community.
When evaluating a claimed Japanese counterpart, ask what the claim actually cites. A named developer statement identifying a specific town would be stronger than a fan resemblance based on architecture or fog. Toyama’s statement is valuable because it confirms that a real-place hint existed while also making clear that the address has not been disclosed in the cited interview.
How to tell canon, inspiration and adaptation apart
Use the relationship category before deciding whether a place belongs on a travel itinerary. The same franchise can contain a fictional location, a reported visual reference and a documented film influence without any contradiction.

The table’s evidence column is as important as its location column. Official release information can establish where a fictional story is set. A creator interview can explain a naming hint. Production notes can document an adaptation decision. Secondary location reporting can identify a visual resemblance worth visiting, but it should not be silently upgraded into canon.
Where to find maps and named landmarks in the games
If your goal is to identify locations inside the fiction rather than plan a real-world trip, the Silent Hill Official Strategy Guide from Piggyback is the most directly relevant physical reference identified for this purpose. It includes maps and named landmarks, including Alchemilla Hospital.
A strategy guide can help you follow the games’ internal geography, compare districts and locate named facilities. It should not be used as proof that those places exist outside the games. A map of a fictional hospital answers “Where is this in the game?”; it does not establish a real hospital as the model.
Check the edition carefully when shopping, since guide contents and marketplace listings can differ. Use the guide for walkthroughs, maps and names, then keep those in-game references separate from travel research about Scotland or Pennsylvania.

There is no single itinerary that reaches every real-world influence because the evidence belongs to different media and has different levels of certainty. Use this decision process instead.

If you want the Townfall atmosphere
- Choose St Monans in Fife as the reported inspiration visit.
- Read current local guidance before setting out, especially for weather, coastal conditions and access to public areas.
- Compare broad environmental qualities—coastline, village fabric and regional atmosphere—with official Townfall material.
- Keep the comparison qualified: visual inspiration does not mean an exact replica.
- Budget for ordinary travel needs such as transport, accommodation and insurance rather than expecting a ticketed attraction.
If you want the movie’s Centralia connection
- Start with Centralia’s documented role in the 2006 film, not with claims about the original games.
- Expect a real community and the history of an underground mine fire, not a preserved movie set.
- Remember that the film changed the state to West Virginia and combined Centralia’s history with Chernobyl imagery, abandoned-hospital references and constructed sets.
- Check present-day access and local rules before visiting any area associated with the town.
If you want the original games’ setting
- Use the games and the official strategy guide to study their maps and named landmarks.
- Treat Toyama’s Japanese-place comment as an origin for the name’s hint, not as a disclosed address.
- Avoid guides that promise one definitive real Silent Hill town unless they clearly distinguish speculation from a documented statement.
Common mistakes when identifying Silent Hill locations
- Turning a visual inspiration into a map. St Monans may inform St. Amelia’s appearance, but no evidence here says the game copies its complete layout.
- Transferring film facts to the games. Centralia is documented for the 2006 adaptation; that does not establish an origin for the original game series.
- Filling in an unnamed reference. Toyama’s interview mentions a real place in Japan without naming it. An unidentified place cannot be converted into a confirmed travel stop.
- Confusing production composites with surviving sites. The film drew on photographs, abandoned hospitals and altered or purpose-built sets, so a scene may not correspond to one visitable building.
- Ignoring the medium. “Canon,” “reported inspiration” and “film influence” answer different questions and should be labeled separately.
- Treating fan maps as official. A carefully drawn comparison can be useful for discussion, but it cannot replace a release statement, creator interview or production document.
The short answer for each reader question
Where is St. Amelia?
In Silent Hill: Townfall, St. Amelia is on a fictional remote island off Scotland.
Is St. Amelia real?
No. St. Amelia is fictional. St Monans in Fife is the reported real-world visual inspiration associated with it.
What real village is Townfall based on?
St Monans is the reported inspiration, but the evidence does not establish a literal one-to-one recreation.
Can I visit the real town that inspired Silent Hill?
You can visit St Monans as a real coastal village associated with Townfall’s reported visual inspiration. You cannot visit St. Amelia itself, and you should plan for a normal community visit rather than an official game attraction.
Did Centralia inspire the games?
Centralia is specifically documented as an influence on the 2006 film adaptation. The cited creator statement does not confirm it as the source of the original games.
Was the movie filmed in Centralia?
Centralia supplied the town history and underground-fire basis described in the director’s notes. The film changed the state, studied other visual references and used altered or purpose-built sets, so Centralia is not the complete filming location for the fictional town.
Where are the original games’ real locations?
No single confirmed town has been identified. Toyama mentioned an unnamed real place in Japan as a hint for the name, while the game town itself is fictional.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: St. Amelia is fictional, and St Monans in Fife is the reported real-world visual inspiration to visit for Townfall atmosphere. Centralia, Pennsylvania belongs to the documented origin of the 2006 film’s town and mine-fire premise, not to a confirmed origin for the original games. For the early games, the only identified real-place clue is Keiichiro Toyama’s unnamed Japanese hint; use the games and the official strategy guide for their fictional maps and landmarks.
