To find the Baleful Shadow in Elden Ring, advance Ranni’s quest until Renna’s Rise opens, take its waygate to Ainsel River Main, then speak repeatedly to the Miniature Ranni at the nearby Site of Grace. After she gives you the objective, follow the river through Uhl Palace Ruins and Nokstella to the tunnel beyond Nokstella Waterfall Basin. The Baleful Shadow appears in the room past that tunnel.
Trigger the Baleful Shadow encounter
- Advance Ranni’s quest until the waygate at the top of Renna’s Rise is open.
- Use the waygate to reach Ainsel River Main.
- Loot the Miniature Ranni from the coffin immediately ahead.
- Rest at the nearby Site of Grace and choose “Talk to Miniature Ranni.” Repeat the conversation until Ranni speaks and tells you to eliminate the Baleful Shadow.
This dialogue is the encounter trigger. Reaching Nokstella before receiving the instruction does not, by itself, guarantee that the Baleful Shadow will appear.
Follow the route to the Baleful Shadow
- From Ainsel River Main, travel southwest through Uhl Palace Ruins toward Nokstella, Eternal City.
- Follow the river through Nokstella to the elevator leading down to Nokstella Waterfall Basin.
- At the Nokstella Waterfall Basin Site of Grace, rest if needed, then go through the tunnel.
- Enter the room beyond the tunnel. The Baleful Shadow appears there.
What to expect from the fight
The Baleful Shadow takes Blaidd’s form and attacks as a greatsword-wielding invader. Guide material reports that it can use one healing flask; leave an opening to respond if it heals. More specific tactics depend on your build, and no build-specific strategy is established here.
Use the Discarded Palace Key
Defeating the Baleful Shadow gives you the Discarded Palace Key. Take it to the Raya Lucaria Grand Library and open the chest beside Rennala to obtain the Dark Moon Ring.
