Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →A gaming laptop’s fans often get louder when a game puts sustained work on the CPU and GPU; that alone does not prove the laptop is overheating or faulty. Start by checking whether the noise follows the workload, then restore clear airflow, look for unnecessary background activity, and use the cooling controls designed for your model. Persistent noise at idle, grinding or rattling, absent airflow, shutdowns, or a sustained performance drop call for diagnostics and possibly service.
There is no single temperature that defines overheating for every gaming laptop. Cooling behavior depends on the model, processor, settings, environment, and workload, so use your manufacturer’s model-specific guidance rather than a universal temperature cutoff.

Why is my gaming laptop fan so loud when I play games?
Games can keep the CPU and GPU busy for long stretches. As those components warm up, the laptop’s thermal controls may increase fan speed to move more heat out of the chassis. ASUS and MSI describe this load-related increase as normal cooling behavior; fans may become audible even when the machine is working as designed. Fan activation thresholds vary, so a fan that sometimes stops or runs quietly is not necessarily defective.

Fans that ramp up when a demanding game starts and settle after it closes are less concerning than fans that remain unusually loud while the laptop is idle. The sound and other symptoms matter too: a smooth rush of air differs from rattling or grinding, and loud fans accompanied by shutdowns or a noticeable loss of performance deserve investigation. Dell lists loud fans, shutdowns, and reduced performance among possible overheating symptoms.

| What you notice | What it may indicate | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| Fan speed rises during a demanding game and drops after you quit | Normal load-related cooling is plausible. | Check placement and airflow, then choose a suitable supported thermal mode if needed. |
| Fan stays loud at idle or when only light tasks are running | Background workload, blocked airflow, dust, or a cooling-system issue may be involved. | Check Task Manager, clear vents, and run the manufacturer’s diagnostics if the behavior persists. |
| Rattling or grinding, or little or no airflow from an exhaust | A fan or other cooling component may need attention. | Do not treat a software profile as a repair; run available diagnostics and contact support if the issue continues. |
| Unexpected shutdown or restart, or performance that remains reduced | Possible overheating or a hardware problem. | Save your work, avoid continued heavy loads, and use the manufacturer’s diagnostic and service route. |
Heat and fan noise alone do not establish that a laptop is operating outside its intended range. Temperature guidance is specific to the device and processor. HP’s OMEN and Victus cooling guidance, for example, describes behavior for supported configurations rather than setting a universal threshold for all gaming laptops.
How to stop a gaming laptop from overheating: troubleshoot in order
Use these checks from least invasive to more involved. After each change, try the same game or workload and see whether the symptom changes. That makes it easier to identify whether airflow, software activity, settings, or a possible hardware fault is contributing.
Keep the test reasonably consistent: use the same game, similar graphics settings, and roughly the same session length when comparing before and after. You do not need to record a specific temperature to make the first checks useful. Note whether fan noise changes, whether exhaust airflow is present, and whether performance or shutdown behavior changes. A single change at a time is more informative than changing several settings at once.
1. Check when the symptom occurs
- Note whether the fan noise or heat begins with a particular game, appears only after a long session, or continues at idle.
- Quit the game and give the laptop time to return to its normal light-workload behavior. If fan speed settles as load falls, thermal control responding to the game is plausible.
- Listen for rattling or grinding and check whether air is moving through the exhaust openings. No airflow, persistent unusual noise, shutdowns, or continuing performance loss warrants more than a routine fan-mode adjustment.
Do not assume that every fan must run continuously. A laptop may vary or stop its fans at low load according to its model-specific controls.
Think of the first check as a simple comparison: does the symptom switch on with a game and ease when the game closes, or does it remain independent of load? In the first case, ventilation, graphics settings, or the selected performance profile may be enough to improve the experience. In the second, investigate background processes and airflow, then consider a hardware diagnostic. A smooth fan rush during a demanding scene is different from a grinding sound that remains present even after the workload ends.
2. Restore clear airflow
- Place the laptop on a hard, flat surface. Beds, blankets, couches, pillows, and other soft surfaces can obstruct openings or restrict airflow.
- Look for the intake and exhaust openings and keep them unobstructed. Their positions differ by design; some laptops exhaust near the hinge, so check the model’s manual rather than assuming all vents are on the sides.
- Make sure nearby objects are not covering the openings and that the laptop has room to move air. A stand or cooling pad is optional if it helps elevate the chassis and clear its vents.
ASUS gives an ambient operating range of 5°C to 35°C for its devices. That is ASUS-specific guidance, not a general operating range for every laptop; check the documentation for your own model if room conditions may be contributing.

- Dual USB Hub: With a built-in dual USB hub, the laptop fan enables you to connect additional USB devices to your laptop, providing extra connectivity options for your peripherals. Warm tips: The packaged cable is a USB-to-USB connection. Type C connection devices require a Type C to USB adapter. Please plug the cooling pad's USB cable into a 5V 1A adapter for best performance; otherwise, the fans may fail to spin or run at very low speed.
- Whisper-Quiet Operation: Enjoy a noise-free and interference-free environment with super quiet fans, allowing you to focus on your work or entertainment without distractions.
- Enhanced Cooling Performance: The laptop cooling pad features 5 built-in fans (big fan: 4.72-inch, small fans: 2.76-inch), all with blue LEDs. 2 On/Off switches enable simultaneous control of all 5 fans and LEDs. Simply press the switch to select 1 fan working, 4 fans working, or all 5 working together.
- Ergonomic Design: The laptop cooling stand also serves as an ergonomic stand, offering 6 adjustable height settings that enable you to customize the angle for optimal comfort during gaming, movie watching, or working for extended periods. Ideal gift for both the back-to-school season and Father's Day.
- Secure and Universal Compatibility: Designed with 2 stoppers on the front surface, this laptop cooler prevents laptops from slipping and keeps 12-17 inch laptops—including Apple Macbook Pro Air, HP, Alienware, Dell, ASUS, and more—cool and secure during use.
Placement is a useful first fix because it is quick and reversible. A stand or cooling pad is an optional way to raise the chassis if it improves clearance, but it is not a diagnosis or guaranteed cure. If a fan has failed, dust is packed inside a heatsink, or another internal component needs attention, changing the surface under the laptop will not repair it. Compare accessories by whether they fit the laptop and let its vents breathe—not by promised temperature reductions.

3. Find unnecessary software activity
- In Windows, open Task Manager and inspect CPU and memory use. If a process is using substantial resources when you are not expecting it, identify what it belongs to before closing it.
- Close applications you do not need while gaming, especially programs that continue doing substantial work in the background.
- If a process remains unusually busy, investigate it rather than repeatedly ending it without knowing its purpose. A persistent software workload can keep the fans active even when the game is closed.
MSI and Dell also include system updates in their troubleshooting guidance. Install updates using the laptop maker’s instructions for the exact model. A BIOS update is not a casual first step: confirm the model and follow the manufacturer’s process, and do not begin one when power is unstable or the laptop is shutting down unexpectedly.
Task Manager is a check, not a reason to stop unfamiliar system processes indiscriminately. First determine whether an application you recognize is using resources—for example, a game launcher, updater, or other app you left open. Close ordinary unneeded programs and see whether the fan settles. If an unknown process stays busy, learn what it is before taking action; repeatedly ending it may conceal the cause without fixing it.
4. Select a supported thermal mode
Use the laptop maker’s own control utility and choose a mode appropriate to the task. Names, options, and available fan controls vary by model and software version; do not apply a fan curve copied from another laptop or disable thermal protection.
| Control or approach | What it does | Trade-off or limitation |
|---|---|---|
| MSI Auto mode | Adjusts fan behavior based on temperature. | Behavior depends on the model and its supported controls. |
| MSI Cooler Boost | Runs fans at full speed. | MSI notes that maximum fan operation is louder. |
| MSI Advanced mode | Allows custom fan settings on supported models. | Availability is model-dependent; use the manufacturer’s instructions rather than a universal curve. |
| Supported HP OMEN or Victus thermal profiles | Provide performance and cooling behavior for supported configurations. | HP describes a performance/noise trade-off; options depend on the system. |
On ASUS ROG and TUF gaming laptops, ASUS directs gaming-related fan adjustment to Armoury Crate. HP also describes a quiet thermal profile for supported systems. These examples are not interchangeable instructions: use the utility and modes available for your particular laptop. A quieter profile can reduce noise but may also reduce performance; a more aggressive cooling mode may be conspicuously loud.

Choose a profile based on what matters for the current task. If you are playing a demanding game and want the laptop to favor cooling, a louder mode may be acceptable. If you are browsing or doing lighter work, a quieter supported profile may be more comfortable, with the possibility of lower performance. Neither choice is a universal repair: if the laptop has grinding noise, no exhaust airflow, shutdowns, or persistent performance loss, investigate the underlying issue rather than treating a profile change as the fix.

5. Adjust game load if the laptop remains unusually warm
If airflow is clear and the system is still unusually warm during a specific game, reducing that game’s graphics settings is one of Dell’s suggested checks. This can lower the workload, but it changes image quality or performance settings and does not repair a blocked heatsink, failed fan, or other hardware problem.
Try a modest change to the settings that affect visual workload, then compare the same scene or session. If the fans become less intrusive while the game remains playable, that may be a practical compromise. If you need the higher settings and the laptop still shuts down or loses performance, do not keep pushing it through repeated heavy sessions; proceed to the maker’s diagnostics and service guidance.
6. Clean only as your manufacturer directs
- Shut the laptop down and unplug it before cleaning.
- Consult the manual or support instructions for the exact model to find vent locations and the approved cleaning method.
- Follow that method exactly. Do not use a powerful air compressor as a general shortcut: ASUS warns that excessive pressure has damaged fan blades. ASUS recommends canned compressed air at a distance with the can upright; Dell specifies a can and warns against blowers and vacuum cleaners for its computers because of static risk. MSI also discusses compressed-air cans or blowers at a distance, illustrating why the instructions for your own device should take precedence.
- If dust appears to be deep inside the laptop, or cleaning would require opening the chassis, contact manufacturer support or a qualified service provider instead of disassembling it as a routine first-line fix.
Cleaning instructions differ between manufacturers, so do not assume a method allowed for one computer is safe for another. A stand or cooling pad can help with positioning, but it cannot be relied on to resolve a faulty fan, internal blockage, or degraded thermal interface.
Recommended Free Tools
For a light external check, inspect the openings for visible obstruction and follow the model’s cleaning instructions; do not push tools into vents or force a fan to spin. A can of compressed air is not interchangeable with a high-pressure air compressor, and manufacturers do not all give identical directions about cleaning tools. For example, ASUS’s overheating and fan guidance, updated September 8, 2026, cautions against powerful compressors and advises using canned air at a distance with the can upright. Dell’s instructions for its computers warn against blowers and vacuum cleaners. Use the directions for your specific laptop rather than combining the most permissive parts of different brands’ advice.
Run the laptop’s fan or hardware diagnostics
If the basic airflow and software checks do not explain the problem, use diagnostics provided for your laptop. The names and availability below are manufacturer-specific; consult the instructions for your exact model.
| Manufacturer | Diagnostic route described in its guidance | What to do if it reports a problem |
|---|---|---|
| ASUS | MyASUS fan diagnostics, when available. | ASUS advises visiting service if the diagnostic detects an issue. |
| MSI | Fan diagnostics in MSI Center. | Follow MSI’s model-specific support instructions if the test identifies a fault or the symptom continues. |
| Dell | SupportAssist or ePSA diagnostics. | Dell advises contacting support for failed tests and if the issue persists after troubleshooting. |
Do not conclude that a fan is healthy merely because one utility is unavailable. A diagnostic may not be offered on every model, and persistent physical symptoms still merit support even if you cannot run the test.

Use the diagnostic path that matches the manufacturer: ASUS describes MyASUS fan diagnostics where available, MSI offers fan diagnostics through MSI Center, and Dell points users to SupportAssist or ePSA. These tools help identify a reported fault; they do not make every possible cooling issue impossible if a test passes. Record the result or any error code and include it when contacting support. If the tool is missing, do not install an unrelated utility just to imitate another brand’s test.
When to stop troubleshooting and seek service
Contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider if a fan diagnostic fails, a fan does not operate when expected, or the laptop continues to show signs of trouble after airflow and software checks. In particular, arrange support for:
- Rattling or grinding that persists, especially with little or no exhaust airflow.
- Unexpected shutdowns or restarts during ordinary use or gaming.
- Performance that remains reduced or overheating behavior that continues after the basic checks.
- A diagnostic result that reports a fan or cooling-system issue.
Keep the exact laptop model, the name of the affected game or workload, when the symptom occurs, and any diagnostic result available when you contact support. Those details help distinguish a workload-related fan response from a persistent cooling fault. Avoid repeated heavy gaming if the laptop is shutting down or showing persistent performance loss; use the manufacturer’s service guidance instead.
Service is the appropriate next step when the remaining possibilities involve internal dust, a worn or faulty fan, or a cooling component that needs repair. The safe first-line checks are placement, software load, supported thermal controls, and manufacturer-approved external cleaning. Internal disassembly or thermal-interface work is not a routine beginner fix. Service costs depend on the provider, location, model, and needed repair; the available manufacturer guidance does not establish a standard price, so ask the authorized support channel or qualified repair provider for an estimate before approving work.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common mistakes that make the problem harder to solve
- Calling every hot gaming session dangerous. Sustained CPU/GPU work can raise temperatures and fan speed. Use model-specific guidance and the behavior of the laptop, not one temperature threshold applied to every device.
- Blocking vents while gaming. A soft surface can restrict airflow. Start with a hard, flat surface and clear openings before changing software or buying accessories.
- Running fans at maximum all the time. Maximum cooling can be loud, and it may not address the cause of persistent noise. Choose a supported mode suited to the task.
- Using aggressive cleaning tools or opening the laptop without instructions. Manufacturers give different cleaning guidance, and excessive pressure or unsuitable tools can cause damage. Follow the exact model’s instructions and refer internal dust or repair work to service when needed.
- Disabling thermal safeguards or copying another model’s fan curve. Controls differ by device. Keep protections enabled and use only the settings supported for your laptop.
Another common misstep is buying an accessory before checking the simple causes. A stand may help raise a laptop so its intakes are less obstructed, and a cooling pad may be useful if it improves placement. Neither guarantees a particular temperature drop or substitutes for a functioning fan and clear internal cooling path. Likewise, third-party cleanup or optimization software is not the starting point here: use Windows Task Manager and the laptop maker’s own software first.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it normal for a gaming laptop to get hot while gaming?
It can be normal for sustained CPU and GPU work to raise temperatures and fan speed. Whether a temperature is appropriate depends on the laptop model, processor, workload, and environment, so there is no single cross-brand cutoff. Look at the pattern and symptoms: fans that rise with a game and settle afterward are less concerning than shutdowns, persistent performance loss, grinding, or absent airflow.

How do I stop my gaming laptop from overheating?
Start with a hard, flat surface and clear intake and exhaust openings. Check Windows Task Manager for unexpected CPU or memory use, close unnecessary applications, and select a supported thermal mode in the manufacturer’s utility. If the issue persists, follow model-specific cleaning and diagnostic instructions; seek service for failed fan tests, shutdowns, unusual mechanical noise, or continuing performance problems.
Why is my laptop fan loud even when I am not playing a game?
A background process may still be using resources, or airflow may be restricted by placement or dust. Check Task Manager, close apps you recognize as unnecessary, and make sure the vents are clear. If the fan remains loud at idle, rattles or grinds, or has little exhaust airflow, run the maker’s diagnostics and contact support if the problem continues.
Should I use a cooling pad or laptop stand?
A stand or cooling pad is optional if it elevates the laptop and helps keep its vents clear. It is an airflow aid, not a guaranteed temperature fix. It will not repair a failed fan, a deep internal blockage, or another hardware fault.
Can I use compressed air to clean my gaming laptop?
Only if the instructions for your exact model allow it, and follow those instructions carefully. Shut down and unplug the laptop first. ASUS cautions against powerful air compressors and recommends canned air at a distance with the can upright; Dell warns against blowers and vacuum cleaners for its computers. For heavy internal dust or cleaning that requires opening the chassis, contact support or qualified service.
When should I stop troubleshooting and get a repair?
Seek manufacturer support or qualified service if a fan diagnostic fails, a fan does not operate when expected, rattling or grinding persists, exhaust airflow is absent, the laptop shuts down or restarts unexpectedly, or performance loss continues after the basic checks. Avoid repeated heavy workloads when those warning signs occur.
The Bottom Line
Louder fans during a demanding game can be normal, but persistent idle noise, grinding, poor airflow, shutdowns, or sustained performance loss deserve attention. Check the workload, restore clear airflow, inspect background activity, and use only your laptop’s supported thermal controls and cleaning instructions. Run the manufacturer’s diagnostics and seek service if the problem persists or a test reports a fault.
