Unlock the Fishing Rig and cast your first line
- Visit the Space Anomaly and research or purchase the Fishing Rig blueprint.
- Install the Fishing Rig in your Multi-Tool.
- Go to a body of water and use the rig to cast. Hello Games says the Fishing Rig can cast into any body of water in its Aquarius update.
- When you catch a fish, decide whether to keep it, release it, or use it for cooking or sale.
How to find different fish
Fishing is tied to the conditions where you cast. Hello Games identifies the planet, time of day, weather, and water depth as factors that can change which fish you encounter. To broaden your collection, vary those conditions rather than repeatedly fishing in one spot.

The Aquarius update reported more than 160 fish varieties at launch in September 2024. That is Hello Games’ launch-era count, not a verified current total. Later, Worlds Part II added more procedurally generated aquatic life, including particularly large creatures in the deepest oceans.
Use bait, but expect to experiment
You can apply crafted specialist bait to the Fishing Rig, and edible items can also serve as bait. Hello Games recommends experimenting with cooked products to see what works for the catch you want. Its published update notes do not provide a complete bait-to-species chart, so there is no supported universal recipe for attracting a particular fish.

Choose between manual, passive, and deep-water fishing

The official feature descriptions do not provide catch rates or guarantee that one method will produce more fish than another.
Track catches and try the later fishing features
Your catch history and weight records appear in the Wonders Catalogue. Worlds Part II also introduced fishing missions and Fishing Rig customization, including line colors and floats. It added the possibility of catching a Child of Aquarius; releasing that creature can attract a Deepwater Guardian. These later additions are described in Hello Games’ Worlds Part II update notes.

Hello Games’ September 21, 2026 Cosmos 7.04 notes mention a text correction for fishing missions when the Fishing Rig is not yet known. That note concerns mission text, rather than a stated change to fishing mechanics.
