If Windows Update shows 0x80070057, restart the computer, run the Windows Update troubleshooter, verify time and available storage, reset the update cache, and then repair Windows with DISM followed by SFC. The title code 0X800070057 contains an extra zero; readers searching for it are almost certainly looking for Microsoft’s canonical 0x80070057.
Microsoft defines this value as an invalid argument: “One or more arguments are invalid.” The related Win32 error 87 means “The parameter is incorrect.” That description does not identify one cause, so the correct fix depends on whether the failure occurs while downloading, installing, upgrading, setting up Windows, restoring a backup, or performing another operation.

What does Windows error 0x80070057 mean?
0x80070057 is the HRESULT E_INVALIDARG. In plain language, Windows or an application received a parameter it could not accept. The underlying Win32 value is error 87 (0x57), defined as “The parameter is incorrect.”
This is a descriptive code, not a diagnosis. A damaged Windows Update cache, corrupted system files, an invalid configuration value, insufficient storage, an incompatible driver or security program, and an installation-media mismatch can all lead to a parameter being rejected. The same code can also appear during an in-place upgrade, a clean installation, backup, or another Windows task.

Before changing anything, note the exact operation, update number if one is displayed, Windows edition and version, and the stage at which the message appears. “Download failed,” “install failed,” and “setup failed” point to different branches later in this guide.
What should I do first when Windows Update reports 0x80070057?
- Write down the details. Capture the complete code, any KB or update number, the Windows version, and whether the error appears during download, installation, restart, upgrade, or setup.
- Restart Windows. A restart clears a pending servicing state and reloads update services. After signing in again, open Windows Update and select Check for updates.
- Do not repeatedly force the same update. If the code returns, continue with the troubleshooter and prerequisite checks instead of interrupting repeated downloads or restarts.
How do I run the Windows Update troubleshooter?
Microsoft says the Update Troubleshooter can help when an error code appears while downloading or installing Windows updates. Run it before making command-line changes, then restart and check for updates again.
Windows 11
- Open Get Help from the Start menu and run the automated Windows Update troubleshooter.
- If you need the Settings route, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run.
- Apply any repair the troubleshooter offers, restart the computer, and select Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.
Windows 10
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
- Select Windows Update, then choose Run the troubleshooter.
- Allow the checks to finish, restart Windows, and select Check for updates.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. The troubleshooting path can still be present on an existing Windows 10 installation, but the end-of-support date matters when deciding whether a continuing update problem should lead to an upgrade plan rather than endless retries.
Which prerequisites can trigger an invalid-parameter update failure?
Check the clock and time zone
Open Settings > Time & language > Date & time on Windows 11, or Settings > Time & Language > Date & time on Windows 10. Turn on automatic time and automatic time-zone selection where available, then use Sync now. An incorrect clock can interfere with update validation and service communication.
Check free storage
Open Settings > System > Storage and remove or move files only when the drive is genuinely full. Microsoft’s cited upgrade guidance calls for 16 GB free for a 32-bit upgrade and 20 GB for a 64-bit upgrade. Those figures apply to the specified upgrade scenario, not as a universal minimum for every cumulative Windows update.

Temporarily remove network or driver variables
If a VPN is active, disconnect it briefly and retry on the normal connection. If you recently added hardware, update its third-party driver after the hardware is recognized correctly. A driver or network filter can affect an update without being the original cause of the error.

A damaged or incomplete cache can leave Windows Update using invalid metadata. There are two practical approaches: stop the service and clear the cache contents, or rename the cache directories from an elevated Command Prompt. Renaming is safer than permanently deleting the folders because Windows can create fresh directories after the services restart.
Method 1: clear the cache through Services
- Press Windows key + R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. - Find Windows Update, right-click it, and select Stop.
- In File Explorer, open
C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution. - Delete the contents of that folder, not the parent
SoftwareDistributionfolder itself. If a file is in use, confirm that Windows Update has stopped before trying again. - Return to Services, right-click Windows Update, and select Start.
- Restart Windows and select Check for updates.
Method 2: rename the cache directories from an administrator Command Prompt
Use this method if the Services approach does not resolve the error. Open Command Prompt (Administrator) and run each line separately, waiting for the command to finish:
net stop bits
net stop wuauserv
ren %systemroot%softwaredistribution softwaredistribution.bak
ren %systemroot%system32catroot2 catroot2.bak
net start bits
net start wuauserv
Restart the computer after the final command and check for updates. The renamed folders preserve the old cache as a fallback while Windows creates clean working folders. If a rename reports that a file is in use, restart, open the elevated Command Prompt again, and repeat the stop commands before renaming.
Should I run DISM and SFC for 0x80070057?
Yes. Run DISM first and SFC second from an elevated Command Prompt. DISM repairs the Windows component image that SFC relies on; SFC then checks protected system files against that repaired image.

- Open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for DISM to reach completion. Do not close the window just because progress appears to pause; component repair can take time.
- When DISM finishes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows after SFC completes, then retry Windows Update.
Record any error text from either command. If DISM cannot obtain repair content because Windows Update is itself broken, use a matching Windows installation source instead of assuming the online source will work. The source should match the installed Windows edition, architecture, language, and version closely enough for component repair.
What if 0x80070057 still appears after cache and system-file repair?
Use a clean restart to expose a third-party conflict
A clean restart loads Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. It can show whether a recently installed security product, VPN, storage utility, device driver, or other background program is interfering.
- Press Windows key + R, type
msconfig, and press Enter. - On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services, then disable the remaining third-party services.
- Open the Startup tab and select Open Task Manager.
- Disable nonessential startup items, close Task Manager, select OK in System Configuration, and restart.
- Retry Windows Update. After testing, return to System Configuration and restore normal startup so disabled services and startup items are not left off permanently.
If the update succeeds in a clean restart, re-enable items in groups and retry until the conflicting program is identified. Microsoft’s update guidance also advises reviewing third-party drivers and, in some update situations, temporarily removing incompatible security software before reinstalling it after the update.

Check storage hardware and removable media
If the system drive is genuinely short of space, move personal data or use external storage as appropriate. A USB drive may be needed for an upgrade or for Windows installation and recovery media, but it is not a general cure for error 0x80070057. Do not buy or prepare removable media until the failure context shows that storage or installation media is the constraint.

Preserve the setup context for an upgrade or installation failure
If the code appears during an in-place upgrade or clean installation rather than an ordinary Windows Update session, stop treating it as only a cache problem. Record the Windows edition, architecture, language, source version, target version, and exact setup stage. Use matching Windows installation media and preserve the setup information before making destructive changes. Do not jump straight to a clean installation merely because the code is present; the code still means an invalid parameter whose source must be identified.
Which troubleshooting path should I choose?
| Remedy | Risk | Scope | Required access | Dependency | Storage or media |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Restart and run the troubleshooter | Low; settings and automated checks | Ordinary Windows Update | Standard account may run checks; elevation may be requested | Windows troubleshooting components | No physical media |
| Check clock, network, drivers and space | Low; reversible configuration checks | Download or installation prerequisites | Standard account for most checks | Working Settings and network access | Existing disk space; USB not normally needed |
| Clear or rename update cache | Moderate; stops services and rebuilds cache | Corrupt update metadata or downloads | Administrator | Windows Update and BITS services | No physical media |
| DISM followed by SFC | Moderate; repairs protected Windows components | System-image or file corruption | Administrator | Online repair source or matching local installation source | Local source may require installation media |
| Clean restart and conflict isolation | Reversible, but startup services are temporarily disabled | Third-party software or driver conflicts | Administrator recommended | System Configuration and Task Manager | No physical media |
| Upgrade or installation media | Highest; operation-specific and potentially disruptive | In-place upgrade or clean installation | Administrator | Matching source and preserved setup context | USB may be required for media or low-storage scenarios |
How does the operation that failed change the fix?
Download failure
Start with the clock, time zone, network path, VPN status, available storage, troubleshooter, and cache reset. A failed download usually does not justify changing installation media or performing a clean installation.
Install failure after download
Use the troubleshooter, cache reset, DISM and SFC sequence, then investigate security software, drivers, and storage. Record whether the failure occurs before or after a restart because servicing-state problems can require another reboot.
In-place upgrade failure
Apply the prerequisite checks, but also record source and target editions, architectures, languages, and versions. The 16 GB and 20 GB figures cited by Microsoft belong to the 32-bit and 64-bit upgrade guidance respectively; they should not be presented as a requirement for every update.
Clean-install or setup failure
Keep the installation source and setup context intact while diagnosing. Verify that the source matches the intended edition and architecture, and back up important files before any operation that could alter partitions or remove the existing installation.

Backup or another non-update task
Use the same meaning of the code—an invalid parameter—but follow the failing product’s logs and settings. Windows Update cache commands will not necessarily repair a backup job that is passing an invalid path, destination, or option.
What mistakes should I avoid while fixing 0x80070057?
- Do not confuse the typo with a different error. Search results may show
0X800070057, but the Microsoft-defined value relevant here is0x80070057. - Do not treat the code as proof of one root cause. It identifies an invalid argument, not whether the cache, files, storage, driver, or configuration is responsible.
- Do not delete system folders while services are running. Stop Windows Update first, and prefer renaming cache directories when using the command-line method.
- Do not run SFC before DISM when repairing the image. Complete DISM, then run SFC, and keep any error output.
- Do not assume upgrade storage figures apply to every update. The 16 GB and 20 GB values are tied to the cited 32-bit and 64-bit upgrade guidance.
- Do not disable security software indefinitely. If a conflict is confirmed, use the product’s supported removal process and reinstall it after the update.
- Do not perform a clean installation as a first response. It can erase applications or data and does not explain which parameter was invalid.
- Do not leave a clean-boot configuration active. Restore normal startup after testing so required third-party services return.
When should I stop retrying and escalate?
Escalate when the error survives a restart, the troubleshooter, prerequisite checks, cache reset, and DISM/SFC, or when it appears only during a particular upgrade or installation stage. Keep the exact code, update number, Windows edition and architecture, stage of failure, command output, and any setup messages together. That information distinguishes a repeatable parameter problem from a transient cache or service failure.
If Windows still starts normally, back up important files before using installation media or changing partitions. If Windows cannot boot after an interrupted update, use the available recovery environment and matching installation media rather than repeatedly forcing shutdowns. The safest next action is determined by the operation that failed, not by the code alone.
As an optional shortcut after the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements and shared DLL problems, while also offering settings tweaks, temporary-file cleanup, privacy tools, vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, file shredding and an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7; a category-based free trial lasts at least two days before a subscription, it complements antivirus rather than replacing it, and results vary—no tool repairs every crash.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can error 0x80070057 damage my personal files?
The code itself does not indicate that personal files are damaged; it reports that Windows rejected an argument. Back up important files before an in-place upgrade, installation-media operation, partition change, or any recovery step that could alter the system.
Will clearing SoftwareDistribution remove installed Windows updates?
The folder holds update downloads and working metadata, not your documents or installed applications. A pending download may need to start again, and Windows can rebuild the cache after the service is restarted.
What should I do if DISM says the source files could not be found?
Use a matching Windows installation source instead of repeatedly retrying the online repair source. Match the installed edition, architecture, language and version as closely as possible, and keep the full DISM message for diagnosis.
Can 0x80070057 appear outside Windows Update?
Yes. The same invalid-parameter value can be returned during setup, an in-place upgrade, backup, or another operation. Identify the task and its exact failure stage before applying Windows Update-specific repairs.
