0x80070032 is not a single Windows 8 fault with one universal remedy. Microsoft maps the code to ERROR_NOT_SUPPORTED; in practice, the useful fix depends on where it appears. For a Windows 8-to-8.1 upgrade that stops around 60–62 percent, remove nonessential peripherals, restart, temporarily disable third-party antivirus or firewall software, retry, and use a clean boot if needed. In a Configuration Manager or WinPE task sequence, inspect the target disk instead: it must be usable, suitable for the deployment (the reference specifically calls out NTFS), and online. Do not format or recreate partitions until data is protected and less destructive checks are complete.

What does Windows error 0x80070032 mean?

Microsoft’s Windows Error Codes reference maps 0x80070032 to ERROR_NOT_SUPPORTED. Its associated message is: “The server cannot support a client request for a dynamic virtual channel.” That wording describes a capability mismatch reported by a Windows component; it does not identify which component, device, disk, or application caused the failure.

The same HRESULT can therefore appear in unrelated workflows. A Windows 8 computer upgrading to Windows 8.1 may show it after the installer reaches approximately 60–62 percent. Microsoft’s Configuration Manager documentation also uses it for task-sequence and WinPE staging failures when the deployment target has no valid usable file system, is encrypted in a way the task sequence cannot use, is unformatted, is corrupt, or is offline.

What the code proves—and what it does not

  • It proves that Windows returned the HRESULT associated with ERROR_NOT_SUPPORTED.
  • It does not prove that Windows Update, the Microsoft Store, a driver, antivirus software, or a hard drive is necessarily at fault.
  • The failure stage and the product displaying the message are essential evidence. Treat the upgrade case and the deployment case as separate troubleshooting paths.

Which Windows 8 situation matches your error?

Identify the workflow before changing settings. The two documented cases require different evidence and have very different risks.

How do I fix a Windows 8-to-8.1 upgrade that stops at 60–62 percent?

Use reversible changes first. The Microsoft Q&A report for this Windows 8 upgrade problem recommends removing nonessential external devices, restarting, temporarily disabling third-party antivirus or firewall software, retrying, and then using a clean boot if the installation still fails.

1. Record the failure before changing anything

Write down the exact percentage, wording, and screen where setup stops. Note whether the computer is a laptop or desktop, which keyboard, mouse, display, storage devices, printers, phones, or other USB hardware are attached, and which third-party antivirus or firewall products are installed. This record lets you tell a repeatable upgrade failure from a one-time interruption.

2. Disconnect nonessential external hardware

Shut down or restart Windows normally. Unplug external devices that setup does not need, including USB storage, printers, cameras, phones, hubs, and other accessories. Leave only essential input and display hardware connected; keep the computer’s internal storage and required power connection in place.

After Windows starts again, launch the Windows 8-to-8.1 upgrade and watch whether it passes the former stopping point. Do not reconnect the removed devices while setup is running. If the installation completes, reconnect hardware one item at a time after reaching the desktop so that a problematic accessory can be identified.

3. Temporarily disable third-party antivirus and firewall software

Security software can interfere with an operating-system installation. Open each third-party antivirus or firewall program and use its own temporary disable or pause control for the upgrade test. Do not uninstall security software unless its vendor’s instructions specifically require that; the Microsoft guidance calls for temporary disabling.

Start the upgrade immediately after disabling the software and keep the test limited to the installation attempt. Re-enable antivirus and firewall protection as soon as setup finishes, rolls back, or clearly stops again. Windows 8’s built-in protections do not make it appropriate to leave third-party protection disabled while browsing or using other untrusted software.

4. Retry after a full restart

Restart Windows rather than merely closing the upgrade window. A restart clears the installer’s previous session and ensures that the peripheral and security-software changes are active from boot. Begin the upgrade again and note whether the failure occurs at the same stage.

5. Perform a clean boot if the retry fails

A clean boot limits startup software and non-Microsoft services that can conflict with setup. In Windows 8:

  1. Press Windows key+R, type msconfig, and press Enter.
  2. On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services. Review the remaining entries, then select Disable all to prevent third-party services from starting for this test.
  3. Open the Startup tab and select Open Task Manager. In Task Manager’s Startup tab, disable the listed nonessential startup items.
  4. Close Task Manager, select OK in System Configuration, and restart the computer when prompted.
  5. Run the Windows 8-to-8.1 upgrade again with only essential hardware attached.

A clean boot is a diagnostic state, not a permanent configuration. When the test is complete, open msconfig again, choose Normal startup on the General tab where available, restore the services and startup items you disabled, restart, and re-enable your antivirus and firewall software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. If setup still fails, preserve the evidence

Do not jump to partition deletion, registry edits, or unrelated driver replacements based solely on the code. Capture the exact setup stage, the repeated percentage, the computer architecture, connected devices, and the names of security products that were disabled for testing. Keep the relevant Windows setup logs available when requesting support; the error alone is too generic to identify the failing component.

How do I fix 0x80070032 during a Configuration Manager or WinPE task sequence?

In deployment, this code commonly indicates that the task sequence cannot use its target storage. Check the disk’s state before changing partitions. The target may be absent, offline, unformatted, corrupt, encrypted in an unsupported way, or formatted with a file system the task sequence cannot use.

1. Confirm that you selected the intended disk

Stop the task sequence if it is still running and identify the target by its capacity and connection. If more than one disk is installed, compare the physical drive labels with what the deployment environment reports. A mistaken disk selection can turn a diagnostic step into data loss.

2. Check whether the disk is online

In a full Windows session, press Windows key+X and open Disk Management. Locate the target disk, check its status, and bring it online if Windows marks it offline. In WinPE, use the storage-management tools available in that environment to perform the equivalent online check.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An administrator can also inspect disks with DiskPart:

  1. Open an elevated Command Prompt.
  2. Enter diskpart, then list disk to display detected drives.
  3. Use the capacity and status information to identify the correct disk, then enter select disk <number>.
  4. Enter online disk only after verifying that the selected number is the intended target.
  5. Enter exit and retry the deployment’s disk-detection step.

Never run clean, format, or a partition-delete command as a casual test. Those operations can remove existing volumes and files.

3. Verify the file system and encryption state

The Configuration Manager reference specifically points to a valid NTFS target. Check that the volume the task sequence is meant to use is formatted with a file system supported by that deployment and that it is visible to WinPE. If encryption prevents the task sequence from reading or preparing the volume, follow your organization’s documented recovery or unlock procedure instead of attempting random partition changes.

4. Treat repair, reformatting, and partition recreation as separate decisions

If the disk is corrupt, unformatted, or has no usable volume, first protect any data that must be retained and confirm that the task sequence is intended to erase the target. Only then consider recreating partitions or formatting. These actions may be appropriate for a deliberately wiped deployment disk, but they are not a harmless fix for a personal computer containing files.

5. Retry and capture deployment logs

After correcting the disk’s online state or selecting a valid target, rerun the task sequence and note the exact step at which it proceeds or fails. Save the task-sequence identifier, WinPE staging message, disk layout, encryption state, and relevant deployment logs. If the code remains, that information gives an administrator something actionable to investigate instead of only a generic HRESULT.

What is the safest troubleshooting order?

Choose the path that matches the screen you saw, then move from reversible checks to higher-risk storage operations.

Situation Risk of the first checks Evidence needed Next action if it fails
Consumer upgrade around 60–62 percent Low: disconnecting accessories, restarting, and temporarily isolating third-party startup software are reversible Upgrade stage, peripherals, security software, and clean-boot result Preserve setup details and logs; escalate rather than altering partitions
Configuration Manager or WinPE task sequence Low to moderate for inspection; high for formatting or partition recreation Disk presence, online state, NTFS suitability, encryption, corruption, and deployment logs Protect data, confirm the intended target, then decide whether an authorized rebuild is appropriate

This order matters because a software-isolation test can be undone, while a partition operation can permanently remove data. The code itself does not justify skipping directly to the destructive option.

What should I include when escalating the problem?

  • The exact text of the error and whether it was written as 0x80070032 or another format.
  • The workflow: Windows 8-to-8.1 upgrade, Windows Update, Microsoft Store, Configuration Manager, or WinPE.
  • The percentage or named task-sequence step where the failure occurred.
  • Windows edition and architecture, plus the task-sequence or update identifier when one is shown.
  • External hardware connected during the attempt.
  • Whether third-party antivirus or firewall software was temporarily disabled and whether a clean boot changed the result.
  • For deployment, the target disk’s online/offline state, file system, encryption status, and whether data must be preserved.
  • Relevant setup or deployment logs and a photograph or screenshot of the failure screen.

These details distinguish a consumer installation conflict from a storage-target problem. They also prevent an administrator from recommending a disk wipe when the failure is actually occurring in the upgrade software.

Which common approaches should you avoid?

  • Assuming the code identifies one component. The same HRESULT is documented in both an operating-system upgrade and a deployment environment.
  • Leaving security software disabled. Disable it only for the controlled installation test, then restore protection.
  • Formatting before checking the target. Confirm the disk, back up required data, and establish that the task sequence is intended to erase it.
  • Using Windows 10 or Windows 11 error tables as a Windows 8 fix. Microsoft’s current generic Windows Update table is scoped to Windows 10 and Windows 11 and does not list this code, so it cannot provide a Windows 8-specific remedy.
  • Inventing a success rate. No named study establishes what percentage of machines are fixed by any of these steps.

As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, tune settings that affect CPU, RAM, and disk load, clean temporary and cache files, and provide tools such as a real-time boost and crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7 and offers a category-based free trial of at least two days before a paid subscription; results vary, it complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, and no tool repairs every crash.

Frequently asked questions

Is 0x80070032 the same as “request not supported”?

It is the hexadecimal HRESULT Microsoft maps to ERROR_NOT_SUPPORTED. That label describes the returned status, not the exact operation that failed, so the screen and workflow still determine the appropriate fix.

Why does an upgrade sometimes fail near the same percentage each time?

A repeatable stopping point means setup is reaching the same transition before encountering the conflict, but it does not identify whether hardware or software is responsible. Recording the percentage after each controlled retry helps support staff correlate the failure with the setup stage.
