- Set Startup type to Automatic. If the service is stopped, select Start.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Restart Windows and try the update again.

2. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
On Windows 11, go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, select Windows Update, and choose Run. Use Services and File Explorer
- Press
Win+R, enterservices.msc, and press Enter. - Right-click Windows Update and choose Stop.
- Open File Explorer and enter
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionin the address bar. - Delete the contents of that folder. If Windows reports that a file is in use, verify that Windows Update is stopped and retry.
- Return to
services.msc, right-click Windows Update, and choose Start. - Restart Windows and run Windows Update again.
Use an elevated Command Prompt instead
Search for Command Prompt, right-click it, select Run as administrator, and run these commands one at a time:
net stop wuauservnet start wuauservUse the first command before clearing C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution in File Explorer, then use the second command afterward. If the stop command reports that the service is not running, continue with the folder cleanup and restart it.
How do DISM and SFC repair Defender or Windows Update failures?
Windows Update and Defender depend on protected Windows components. If the service is enabled and update data is clean but the failure continues, repair the component store with DISM and then verify protected files with System File Checker.
- Open Command Prompt with Run as administrator.
- Run the image repair command and wait for it to finish:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth- After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow- Restart Windows, then retry the operation that produced the error.
Do not close the window while either scan is running. DISM may take considerably longer than SFC and can appear to pause at a percentage for several minutes.
