If an SCCM task sequence reports 0X800700057, first correct the spelling: Microsoft documents the Windows HRESULT as 0x80070057. It means E_INVALIDARG—one or more arguments are invalid—not one specific SCCM defect. The reliable fix is to identify the failing action, open the log that owns that action, and repair the bad drive target, content-provider response, reboot state, or authoring registration shown immediately before the HRESULT.
Do not apply a universal disk cleanup or reinstall the client before collecting evidence. The same code can occur in WinPE, the installed client, a distribution-point transfer, or the task-sequence editor, and each situation has a different remedy.

What does 0x80070057 mean in SCCM?
Microsoft’s HRESULT table defines 0x80070057 as E_INVALIDARG — One or more arguments are not valid.
In Configuration Manager, a component received a value, path, drive identifier, provider response, or state that it could not use. The number therefore identifies an argument problem, not the component that supplied it.
That distinction matters when a screen says The parameter is incorrect
. The message is a symptom. The actionable diagnosis is the task-sequence step or console operation that failed and the more specific line immediately before the HRESULT in its log. Microsoft explains that client and site-server components write process information to individual log files, so looking in the wrong log can hide the cause.

No authoritative Microsoft statistic establishes how often this HRESULT occurs or how often any one remedy succeeds. Treat every occurrence as a context-specific investigation rather than as proof that a disk, client, or distribution point is generally broken.
How should I diagnose the error before changing SCCM?
Use this order so a retry does not erase the evidence you need:
- Record the context. Write down the exact task-sequence step or console action, whether the deployment is running in WinPE or the full Windows client, the deployment medium, the Configuration Manager release, and the timestamp. Note whether the failure happened while authoring a sequence, applying an operating system, downloading content, installing updates, or restarting.
- Choose the log that owns that action. Use the phase table below for a task sequence. For other operations, use the component map rather than relying on the final error dialog.
- Open the log in a suitable viewer. CMTrace is available in Configuration Manager boot images and works in Windows PE. OneTrace and Support Center use Windows Presentation Foundation and are not available in WinPE, so they cannot be used at that stage.
- Search for the HRESULT, then read upward. Start at
0x80070057and move toward earlier lines until you find the first concrete failure: an unresolved drive, a provider or network change, a restart request, a missing class, or another named input. The line immediately before the HRESULT is usually more useful than the number itself. - Preserve the original log set. Copy the relevant log before selecting Retry. A second attempt can overwrite the sequence of events and can also change network, reboot, or content-cache conditions.
- Apply only the branch that matches the evidence. The fixes in this guide are intentionally separated by location and component. Do not substitute a client repair for a malformed Apply Operating System target or a disk operation for an Alternate Content Provider failure.
Where is smsts.log during each task-sequence phase?
The path changes as the deployment moves from WinPE to the new operating system and then to the installed client. Use the path that matches the phase in which the error appeared.
| Deployment phase | smsts.log location |
|---|---|
| Before Format and Partition Disk in WinPE | X:WindowsTempsmstslogsmsts.log |
| After formatting in WinPE | X:smstslogsmsts.log |
| New operating system, before the Configuration Manager client is installed | C:_SMSTaskSequenceLogssmstslogsmsts.log |
| Windows after the client is installed | C:WindowsCCMLogssmstslogsmsts.log |
| After the task sequence completes | C:WindowsCCMLogssmsts.log |
The read-only task-sequence variable _SMSTSLogPath reports the current log path. If the screen does not make the phase obvious, use that variable’s value or check whether the client is already installed before choosing a file.
Which SCCM log contains the useful evidence?
Match the failing operation to its component log. A task-sequence error can be displayed by one component while the underlying argument problem was recorded by another.
| Where the failure appears | Log to inspect | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Task-sequence execution or a particular step | smsts.log |
The step name, command result, drive or path value, and the first specific error before the HRESULT. |
| Content-transfer job on a client | ctm.log |
Alternate Content Provider activity, network changes, content location, and whether the transfer was marked non-retriable. |
| Packages or task sequences launched by the client | execmgr.log |
The deployment request, program or sequence state, and any restart or execution transition. |
| Package creation, distribution, or distribution-point work on the site server | distmgr.log |
Package processing, distribution status, and distribution-point errors. |
| Configuration Manager client setup, upgrade, or removal | ccmsetup.log |
Client installation or upgrade arguments and the point at which setup rejected them. |
| Creating or editing a task sequence | TaskSequenceProvider.log |
Provider and WMI registration messages, including missing MDT BDD_* classes. |
Keep the timestamp in your notes when you collect logs. On a busy client, the same component can write many operations, and matching the log lines to the failed deployment prevents a correct message from an unrelated job being treated as the cause.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow do I fix 0x80070057 when Apply Operating System targets the wrong drive?
This is the documented WinPE case to investigate when smsts.log contains CDisk::IsLocalHardDrive, an invalid drive number, or The parameter is incorrect. (Error: 80070057; Source: Windows)
. Microsoft documents an Apply Operating System situation in which the _OSDDetectedWinDrive value produces an invalid target, including an unintended backslash, so the operating-system destination cannot be resolved.
Inspect the failing Apply Operating System step
- In the task-sequence editor, open the step that applies the operating-system image and review its destination setting. Determine whether it uses a task-sequence variable rather than a fixed volume.
- Compare that destination with the partition created by the preceding Format and Partition Disk step. The target must resolve to the intended local Windows volume, not an empty value, a malformed path, or a drive identifier that no longer exists.
- In the preserved
smsts.log, locate the value associated with_OSDDetectedWinDriveand the lines aroundCDisk::IsLocalHardDrive. An extra separator or unresolved variable is more actionable than the final HRESULT. - Correct the variable or destination reference in the sequence, then validate the partitioning and Apply Operating System steps together. Do not change disk numbers merely because the error contains the word parameter; disk numbering can differ between machines and deployment media.
- Check the Configuration Manager servicing level against the Microsoft documentation for this case. If the behavior is covered by a supported update for your release, apply that update through your normal change process before retesting.
Retest with the same boot image, task sequence, and deployment conditions. If the log no longer reaches the malformed target but fails later, keep the original and new logs separate; the new failure may be unrelated.
How do I fix 0x80070057 during content download?
When the HRESULT is in ctm.log, investigate content transfer rather than the operating-system destination. Microsoft documents a 0x80070057 case involving an Alternate Content Provider (ACP) and a client that changes networks during the transfer; the transfer can be recorded as non-retriable.
Check the ACP and network transition
- Confirm whether an Alternate Content Provider is installed on the affected client and whether it participates in the deployment.
- Compare the timestamp in
ctm.logwith the client’s network history. A move between wired, wireless, VPN, or other networks during the download is relevant to this documented case. - Verify that the content is available from the intended distribution point and that the deployment is using the expected content location. A missing or unsuitable location must be corrected before another test.
- Review the ACP’s own status and the provider/network path for the failed job. The goal is to correct the response or path that supplied the invalid argument, not to delete unrelated client caches.
- For the affected Configuration Manager release, apply the supported update or rollup that addresses this content-transfer behavior, then test again with the same client, provider, network conditions, and deployment.
If the client did not change networks and no ACP is involved, do not assume this branch applies. Use the component and step that actually produced the HRESULT; smsts.log, execmgr.log, or a site-server log may identify a different input.

How do I fix the error after Install Software Updates restarts the computer?
A task sequence can lose its state when Windows performs multiple uncontrolled restarts during the Install Software Updates step. Microsoft describes a case in which an update requests a second restart before the task sequence has saved the necessary state; the final message can then include 0x80070057 even though the underlying problem is reboot sequencing.
- In
smsts.logand, where relevant, execmgr.log, establish whether the failure follows an update installation and more than one restart request. - Check which restart controls are configured for the Configuration Manager version and deployment type. Use the supported retry or second-reboot controls documented for that release so the task sequence, rather than an uncontrolled Windows restart, manages the transition.
- If those updates do not need to be part of the imaging sequence, deploy them through ordinary Configuration Manager software-update deployment instead of chaining them to the task sequence.
- Retest from a clean, documented deployment state and preserve the reboot-related lines. Do not infer a malformed disk or parameter from the final HRESULT until the restart history has been ruled out.
How do I repair an MDT task sequence that fails while being created?
This branch applies to authoring, not to a task sequence that already runs on a client. If TaskSequenceProvider.log reports missing BDD_* classes while you create an MDT task sequence, the MDT console extensions are not registered correctly.
- Close every open Configuration Manager console.
- Run Configure ConfigMgr Integration from the MDT installation and remove the MDT console extensions.
- Run the integration configuration again to install the extensions.
- Reopen the console and run the MDT task-sequence wizard again.
- Confirm in
TaskSequenceProvider.logthat the provider can resolve the requiredBDD_*classes before attempting to troubleshoot client execution.
Do not use this authoring repair for a client-side Apply Operating System, content-transfer, or reboot failure. Those cases require the execution log and the corresponding branch above.

What should I collect before escalating the incident?
Provide an administrator or support team with a compact, time-matched evidence set:
- The exact HRESULT spelling and the complete text of the error dialog.
- The task-sequence name, step name, deployment type, boot image or operating-system media, and Configuration Manager release.
- The phase-specific
smsts.logplus the component log that owns the event, such asctm.log,execmgr.log,distmgr.log,ccmsetup.log, orTaskSequenceProvider.log. - The timestamp, client identity, distribution point, network used during the attempt, and whether an Alternate Content Provider was installed.
- For reboot cases, the number and order of restart requests; for authoring cases, whether all consoles were closed during MDT integration repair.
- The original logs captured before a retry and any later logs labeled as a separate attempt.
This information lets the reviewer compare the location of the error, the log that owns it, the kind of input that was rejected, and whether the release is covered by a documented update. It also prevents a generic client reinstall or disk modification from obscuring the actual failure.
As an optional shortcut after reviewing the logs, Outbyte PC Repair can attempt to fix more than 100 common Windows issues, clean temporary and cache files, check selected Windows settings and missing updates, and provide an app-crash log. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it; a free trial is available by category for at least two days on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, followed by a subscription, and results vary.
Frequently asked questions
Can I solve 0x80070057 by rerunning the deployment?
A rerun can succeed if a transient network or reboot condition has changed, but it is not a diagnosis. Save the original logs and note the changed conditions first; otherwise the second attempt may overwrite the only evidence of the invalid argument.
Should I change disk numbering when Apply Operating System fails?
Not as a first response. Disk numbers are hardware- and firmware-dependent, so changing them without the smsts.log evidence can send the image to the wrong volume. Correct the destination and _OSDDetectedWinDrive value that the log shows instead.
Does reinstalling the Configuration Manager client repair every 0x80070057 case?
No. A client reinstall cannot correct an MDT provider registration problem, an invalid WinPE drive target, or an Alternate Content Provider that loses state during a network change. Reinstall only becomes relevant when ccmsetup.log identifies client setup or upgrade arguments as the failing operation.
When should I involve the site administrator rather than the desktop team?
Escalate to the Configuration Manager site team when the evidence points to distribution-point content, distmgr.log, release-specific rollups, task-sequence provider integration, or deployment-wide behavior affecting multiple clients. Include the phase-specific logs and timestamps so the team can separate a site configuration issue from a single-machine failure.
