If Windows 7 System Restore stops while scanning drive C: and shows 0x80070057, start by protecting your files, then run chkdsk C: /r from an elevated Command Prompt. Restart when prompted, let the disk check finish, and retry System Restore with a different restore point. If protected Windows files may also be damaged, run sfc /scannow. The same code is also used by Windows Backup and Windows Update for different problems, so the exact message determines the correct fix. A Backup failure may require changing the regional decimal symbol to a period, while an Update failure follows a separate hard-drive and update-component path.
What does error 0x80070057 mean in Windows 7?
0x80070057 is a general Windows error, not a diagnosis by itself. In one Windows 7 SP1 System Restore failure, it appears while the restore process scans drive C: and warns that the drive might be corrupt. Microsoft also uses the code for “The parameter is incorrect” in some installation and Windows Update operations.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
That distinction matters because a disk check is the documented first response to the restore-specific scan failure, but it is not a universal cure for every appearance of the code. Match the procedure to the component that displayed the message:
| Where the error appears | Typical wording or symptom | First action | Access mode | Relative risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| System Restore | Restore fails while scanning C: and says the drive might be corrupt | Back up accessible files, then run chkdsk with /r |
Normal desktop or WinRE | Disk-level repair; protect data first |
| Windows Backup | Backup fails with 0x80070057 | Check the regional decimal symbol and path length | Normal desktop | Configuration change or file move |
| Windows Update or installation | “The parameter is incorrect” | Follow the update-specific hard-drive and component-reset procedure | Normal desktop, unless Windows will not start | Separate troubleshooting branch |
The remainder of this guide covers the System Restore case first, then the Backup and Update branches so that you do not apply an unrelated fix.

What should I do before trying to repair System Restore?
Copy important files to a separate disk while Windows still starts. Use an external drive or another destination that is not the Windows volume being checked. A failed backup and a warning about possible drive corruption are reasons to preserve data before repeating repair operations.
- Copy documents, photos, saved games, browser profiles and any other files you cannot replace.
- Do not treat a restore point as a personal-file backup. System Restore is intended to change Windows system files and settings associated with the selected point.
- If copying repeatedly fails, the disk makes unusual noises, or files become unreadable, stop repeated write-heavy repairs and move to the escalation section below.
How do I fix 0x80070057 when System Restore fails while scanning C:?
Run the disk check first, allow it to complete, and then retry with another restore point. This is the symptom-specific sequence documented for the Windows 7 SP1 failure in which System Restore reports that the drive might be corrupt.
1. Open an elevated Command Prompt
- Click Start, type
cmdin the search box. - Right-click cmd.exe or Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt. The window title should indicate administrator privileges.
2. Run CHKDSK with surface-sector recovery
At the prompt, enter:
chkdsk C: /r
The /r option asks Windows to locate unreadable sectors and recover readable information. If Windows says the volume is in use and asks whether to schedule the check for the next restart, type Y and press Enter.
On a normal Windows 7 installation, C: is usually the system volume. In Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), drive letters can change, so use the letter assigned to the Windows volume there instead of assuming it is C:.
3. Restart and let the check finish
Restart the computer if the check was scheduled. Do not force a shutdown while CHKDSK is working. The duration has no fixed value; it depends on the volume and the problems found, and a large or damaged disk can take a long time.
4. Retry System Restore with another restore point
After Windows starts, open Control Panel, go to System and Security, open System, select System protection, and choose System Restore. You can also press Windows key+R, type rstrui.exe, and press Enter.

Choose a restore point from before the problem, then use the option to show more restore points if it is available. Microsoft specifically advises trying System Restore again with a different restore point after running the disk check. A restore point that is itself unreadable may fail even after the disk structure has been repaired.
5. Repair protected Windows files with SFC
If System Restore still fails, open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
System File Checker scans protected Windows files and replaces corrupted copies with a cached copy when one is available. Let the scan reach 100 percent before closing the window, then restart and try System Restore again. SFC addresses protected-file corruption; it does not replace the disk check when the restore failure specifically identifies possible drive corruption.
How can I run System Restore if Windows 7 will not boot?
Use Windows 7 installation media or another appropriate recovery path to enter Windows Recovery Environment, then start System Restore there. Microsoft documents launching the recovery tools from installation media when normal startup is unavailable.

You may need to select the optical drive or USB device in the firmware boot menu.
- When the setup screen appears, choose the language and keyboard options, then select Repair your computer instead of installing Windows.
- Select the Windows 7 installation to repair and open System Restore from the recovery tools.
- Choose a restore point and let the operation complete. If you need a command prompt in WinRE, confirm the Windows volume letter first; it may not be C:.
The media should match the installed Windows edition and the 32-bit or 64-bit architecture. Windows 7 media availability and licensing vary, so use media you are legitimately entitled to use and verify that it matches the installation before relying on it for recovery.
What if 0x80070057 appears during Windows Backup?
A Backup failure can have a different cause from the restore-point scan error. Microsoft documented a Windows 7 Backup defect in some regional configurations when the decimal symbol is not a period.

Check the decimal symbol
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Region and Language.
- On the Formats tab, open Additional settings.
- Set the Decimal symbol to a period:
. - Apply the change and restart if Windows requests it.
- Run Windows Backup again.
This setting change is relevant to the documented locale-related Backup failure, not automatically to every 0x80070057 message. If the decimal symbol is already a period, continue with the other Backup-specific checks rather than repeatedly changing regional settings.
Check for an overlong Backup path
A separate Windows 7 Backup defect occurs when a file path exceeds 260 characters. Move the affected file or folder to a location with a shorter path, then retry the backup. Shortening the path is the documented workaround for that condition; it does not repair a physically failing disk.
What if the code appears in Windows Update or an installation?
Do not substitute the restore procedure for an Update or installation failure. In those contexts Microsoft describes 0x80070057 as “The parameter is incorrect” and directs users to check the hard drive and reset Windows Update components.
First record the exact operation that failed and its complete message. Then use the Windows Update troubleshooting path for that operation, including the documented hard-drive check and update-component reset. A restore-point scan that reports possible corruption and an update that rejects a parameter can share the numeric code while requiring different repairs.
When should I stop running repairs and seek data recovery?
Escalate instead of repeating CHKDSK or restore attempts when the drive continues to report bad sectors, remains unreadable, or prevents backups from completing. Repeated repairs can increase the amount of writing on a deteriorating disk, while your priority at that point is preserving recoverable data.
- Stop if CHKDSK repeatedly finds new or recurring bad sectors.
- Stop if files cannot be copied or the volume intermittently disappears.
- Stop if Windows Backup fails repeatedly and the storage device is also showing corruption symptoms.
- Use a professional data-recovery service before attempting more invasive writes when the files are irreplaceable.
The Microsoft guidance establishes possible corruption and backup failure as warning signs, but it does not endorse a particular recovery company. Choose a service that can explain its diagnostic process and preserve the original drive while working from a copy when possible.

Can I cancel a System Restore that appears stuck?
Do not interrupt a disk check or a restore operation simply because the screen has not changed for a while. If the computer is genuinely unresponsive for an extended period, power loss is a risk, so document what is on screen and seek technical help rather than repeatedly forcing shutdowns.
Why does the Windows volume have a different letter in recovery mode?
WinRE assigns drive letters independently of the normal desktop session. The partition that is C: in Windows may appear under another letter in recovery mode, so identify the Windows folder before running a command against a volume.

Does changing the decimal symbol fix every 0x80070057 error?
No. The period setting is tied to a documented Windows 7 Backup problem in some regional configurations. It does not explain a System Restore scan that warns about a corrupt drive or an Update message that says the parameter is incorrect.
What if there are no usable restore points?
System Restore can only use restore points that still exist and can be read. If none work after the disk and protected-file checks, use WinRE recovery options or restore from a separate personal backup rather than assuming another restore point will be created automatically.
Is 0x80070057 itself a virus warning?
No. The code identifies an operation or data problem reported by Windows; its meaning depends on the component and message. A drive-corruption warning deserves immediate data protection, but the number alone does not establish malware.
