0x8007007E is Windows error ERROR_MOD_NOT_FOUND (decimal 126): Windows could not find a required module. It is a generic condition, not a diagnosis of one particular DLL or application. The most reliable first repair is to run DISM, then System File Checker (SFC), from an elevated Command Prompt. If the problem began after a system change, System Restore can roll back system files and settings without deleting personal files. When Windows will not boot, use Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), update removal, reset, or installation media in increasing order of disruption.
The title is often typed as “ox8007007e,” but the first character is the number zero: 0x8007007E. Record where the message appeared before changing anything, and back up important files before recovery actions that can remove applications, settings, or data.

Windows maps hexadecimal 0x7E to decimal error 126, named ERROR_MOD_NOT_FOUND. The associated message is “The specified module could not be found.” A module may be a Windows component, a shared library, or another file that the operation needs. The code itself does not identify which file is missing or which program requested it.
The surrounding event is therefore essential. The same code can appear while launching an application, installing an update, starting Windows, or running System Restore. Write down the exact wording, the executable or operation named in the dialog, and when the failure started. That record tells you whether to concentrate on a recent system change, a recovery operation, or a program-specific problem.

What the code does not prove
- It does not by itself prove that a particular DLL should be downloaded from the internet.
- It does not identify malware, a failing hard drive, or one universal fix.
- It does not guarantee that System Restore will succeed; a restore point and a usable recovery environment are required.
What should I do before attempting a repair?
Capture the failure context
- Copy the code exactly, using a zero after the “x”:
0x8007007E. - Record whether it appeared during an application launch, Windows Update, startup, or System Restore.
- Note the application name, executable name, or action shown in the message.
- Write down when the problem began and what changed immediately beforehand, such as an update or driver installation.
This information prevents a generic error code from being mistaken for a complete diagnosis. If the message names a program, keep that name available when you test each repair.
Back up files that matter
Copy documents, saved games, photos, and other irreplaceable files to a separate drive or another safe location before using Reset, reinstalling Windows, or applying manufacturer recovery media. System Restore is designed not to remove personal files, but broader recovery actions can remove applications, settings, or data. If the computer is encrypted with BitLocker, locate its recovery key before entering WinRE; recovery actions may request it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow do I run DISM and SFC to repair Windows?
DISM repairs the Windows component store that supplies replacement files. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies using that repaired store. Microsoft’s sequence is deliberate: run DISM first, then SFC.
- Open the Start menu, type Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command exactly:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window because progress can pause while the component store is checked or repaired.
- When DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Let verification reach 100 percent. Close the Command Prompt only after SFC reports completion.
- Restart Windows and retry the operation that produced 0x8007007E.
These commands are the least disruptive built-in repair in this workflow: they target Windows image and protected files rather than rolling back your applications or personal data. A successful command does not identify a missing application-owned module, so keep the original context if the error remains.
What if DISM says that source files could not be found?
DISM normally obtains repair files through Windows Update. If that path is unavailable, supply a Windows source from matching installation media, a network share, or removable media. Microsoft’s documented pattern is:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the actual path to the Windows folder in your repair source. The source should match the installed Windows version, edition, architecture, and, where applicable, language. A mismatched source can leave the image unrepaired or cause DISM to fail again. The /LimitAccess switch tells DISM not to contact Windows Update, which is useful when you intentionally want it to use only the supplied source.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →How should I proceed after a failed SFC run?
Do not repeatedly run SFC while ignoring a damaged component store. Confirm that DISM completed, restart, and run sfc /scannow again. If the same error still occurs, move to the recovery branch that matches the point at which 0x8007007E appears rather than deleting individual DLL files.
How do I use System Restore to undo the change?
System Restore is appropriate when the problem began after a software installation, update, or other system change and a restore point from before that event exists. It rolls back system files and settings; it does not remove personal files.
Start System Restore while Windows is running
- Press Win+R to open the Run dialog.
- Enter
rstrui.exeand press Enter. - Choose a restore point dated before 0x8007007E began. If more points are available, use the option to show additional restore points.
- Select Scan for affected programs when offered. Review which applications and drivers may be changed by the rollback.
- Confirm the point and allow Windows to restart and apply it. Do not interrupt the restart.
After Windows returns, retry the original operation. A restore point is a snapshot of system state, not a repair source for every possible application file, so the result depends on what changed and what the point contains.
Start System Restore from WinRE
If Windows cannot start normally, enter Windows Recovery Environment and select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore. Choose an administrator account if prompted, enter its password, and select a restore point from before the failure. On a BitLocker-encrypted device, WinRE may request the BitLocker recovery key before it can access the drive.

WinRE’s System Restore uses the same type of point-in-time rollback as the in-Windows tool. It is useful when startup is broken, but it still requires an available restore point. If none is listed, choose another recovery path instead of repeatedly restarting.
What can I do if Windows will not boot?
Use WinRE rather than trying to run repairs from a normal desktop that never loads. Windows may enter WinRE automatically after failed starts; you can also boot from compatible Windows installation or recovery media when the built-in environment is unavailable.
Use the least disruptive WinRE option first
- Open Troubleshoot in WinRE.
- Try Advanced options > System Restore if a suitable point exists.
- If the problem follows a recent Windows update, use the option to uninstall the relevant recent update.
- Return to the recovery menu and test Windows after each completed action.
- If those options do not resolve the startup failure, back up accessible files and consider Reset this PC or a reinstall.
Exact option names can vary by Windows edition and recovery source. Read each confirmation screen: some choices preserve personal files but remove applications and settings, while a clean reinstall from installation media removes everything on the device.
When is a USB recovery drive useful?
A blank USB flash drive can hold bootable Windows installation or recovery media. The drive is task-enabling media, not automatically a licensed copy of Windows. Use media that matches the installed release when it is serving as a DISM source, and understand that booting from installation media can lead to a full reinstall if you select that path.
Which recovery option should I choose?
The right choice depends on whether Windows still boots, what you need to preserve, and whether a restore point or matching source exists.

How should I troubleshoot different 0x8007007E situations?
The error appears when an application launches
Start by recording the application or executable named in the message. Run DISM and SFC to rule out damaged Windows components, restart, and test again. If the code persists, the context tells you that the missing module may belong to that application rather than to the Windows image; avoid downloading an arbitrary DLL because the hexadecimal code alone does not identify a safe replacement.
The error appears during Windows Update or startup
Use the DISM-then-SFC sequence first. If the failure began immediately after an update and Windows will not start, use WinRE’s update-removal option or System Restore if a suitable point exists. Keep installation media available if DISM cannot obtain source files.
System Restore itself reports 0x8007007E
Run DISM and SFC from a normal elevated Command Prompt if Windows still loads. If it does not, use WinRE to run System Restore again or select another recovery option. A restore-point failure does not mean that every recovery path is unavailable; it means you should not depend on that particular operation without repairing the underlying Windows image or changing recovery methods.
What are the most common mistakes?
- Running SFC first: SFC depends on repair files in the component store, so run DISM before SFC.
- Using an unmatched source: Installation media with a different edition, architecture, release, or language may not repair the installed image.
- Deleting or downloading a DLL at random: The code identifies a missing module condition, not the correct file or its trusted source.
- Skipping a backup: Reset and reinstall choices can remove applications, settings, or personal data.
- Ignoring BitLocker: Have the recovery key available before WinRE asks for it.
- Assuming a restore point exists: System Restore cannot roll back to a point that is not listed or is unavailable.
- Interrupting recovery: Let DISM, SFC, restore, reset, or reinstall finish and restart as instructed.
What is the safest repair order?
- Confirm the exact code and capture the operation that triggered it.
- Back up important files and locate the BitLocker recovery key if encryption is enabled.
- Run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthfrom an administrator Command Prompt. - Run
sfc /scannow, wait for completion, restart, and retest. - If DISM cannot obtain files, provide a matching source with
/Sourceand/LimitAccess. - If the issue began after a change, use
rstrui.exeor WinRE’s Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore. - If Windows will not boot, try update removal and the available WinRE options before reset or reinstall.
- Use reset or reinstall only after confirming the backup and understanding what the selected option will remove.

It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7; a free trial lasts at least two days before a paid subscription, and it complements an antivirus rather than replacing one.
Frequently asked questions
Why do some guides write this error as “ox8007007e”?
The first character is a zero, not a lowercase letter “o.” Windows hexadecimal error codes use the 0x prefix, so the conventional form is 0x8007007E; capitalization after the “x” does not change the code.

Does DISM require an internet connection?
Its normal online repair path obtains files through Windows Update, so connectivity can help. You can instead provide a matching local, removable, or network source and use /LimitAccess to keep DISM from contacting Windows Update.
Will a blank USB drive repair Windows automatically?
No. The drive only becomes useful after you create compatible installation or recovery media on it. It can provide boot tools or a repair source, but selecting a clean reinstall from that media can erase the device.
