Why the title may show 0X080070422
The string 0X080070422 contains an extra leading zero compared with Microsoft’s documented 0x80070422. Case does not matter, but the digits do: use 0x80070422 when searching Microsoft documentation or recording the error for support. - Write down any message that appears when you click Start. “Access denied,” a dependency error, or a specific service error determines the next branch.

- Sign in as an administrator. If you are not sure which account you are using, ask the computer’s administrator to perform the procedure.
- Open Services. Press Win+R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. Approve a User Account Control prompt if Windows displays one. - Locate Windows Update. In the Services list, find Windows Update. The list is alphabetical, so scrolling to the W entries is usually faster than changing unrelated services.
- Open its properties. Right-click Windows Update and choose Properties.
- Set the startup mode. In the General tab, open Startup type and select Automatic. This tells Windows to start the service as part of normal system operation rather than leaving it disabled.
- Start it if necessary. Look at Service status. If it says Stopped, click Start. If it is already running, leave it running and continue with the remaining steps.
- Save the change. Click Apply, then OK. Applying before closing confirms that the startup-type change was accepted.
- Restart Windows 7. Use the normal Restart command and wait for the desktop to return.
- Check for updates again. Open Control Panel > System and Security > Windows Update, then select the option to check for updates. Allow the check to complete before deciding whether another repair is needed.
If the check now proceeds, the disabled or stopped service was the cause. Let Windows finish its update cycle; a long first check does not by itself mean the repair failed. If the same code returns, reopen Services and verify that Startup type still reads Automatic and that the service is running after the restart.

Reset the SoftwareDistribution cache
- Open
services.mscwith an administrator account. - Find Windows Update, open Properties, and click Stop. Wait until the service status shows that it has stopped.
- Open Windows Explorer and go to
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution. This folder contains cached update data used by Windows Update. - Clear the contents of the SoftwareDistribution folder. Remove the files and subfolders inside it, not the parent
Windowsfolder. If Windows reports that an item is in use, return to Services and confirm that Windows Update is stopped before trying again. - Return to the Windows Update properties window and click Start. Leave the startup type set to Automatic, then click Apply and OK.
- Restart the computer and use Control Panel > System and Security > Windows Update to check again.
Resetting this folder makes Windows Update rebuild its local cache. It is not a substitute for enabling a disabled service, and it should not be the first action when the service is clearly stopped or disabled. The first check after a reset may need to reconstruct update data, so avoid interrupting it unless Windows reports a new error.
Could BITS or another dependency be preventing the service from starting?
