Microsoft documents 0x80070422 as ERROR_SERVICE_DISABLED. In this update context, Windows Update has stopped working, is not running, or has been disabled. How do I fix 0x80070422 by starting Windows Update?

Run the Windows Update troubleshooter

Check power, network, and permissions

- Plug the computer into power, especially during a laptop update.
- Use an administrator account. Standard accounts may be unable to start the service or replace update files.

Clear the Windows Update download cache
Corrupted files in the update cache can keep a running service from completing an update. This procedure removes the contents of the cache folder; it does not remove Windows itself.
- Press

Set the clock to update automatically

If the setting is controlled by an organization, contact that administrator rather than forcing a manual change.
Restart after any pending update
A previous update may be waiting for a reboot. Restart Windows even if no restart prompt is visible, sign in again, and run the update check once more.

After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10.
