0x8007045D is Windows error ERROR_IO_DEVICE: a read or write request could not be completed because of an input/output device problem. The spelling 0X80007045D is a common search variant with an extra zero; the documented code is 0x8007045D. Protect any readable files first, then safely eject and reconnect the device, try another port and cable, and test the operation again. After that, check the affected volume with chkdsk. If the error follows the drive across several connections, stop destructive repairs and consider professional recovery before replacing or formatting it.

What does Windows error 0x8007045D mean?

Windows uses 0x8007045D when a storage read or write cannot finish because the I/O path failed. The path can include the USB port, cable, power source, removable media, file system, controller, driver, or the storage device itself. Microsoft Answers Support Engineer Diana described the message as: “The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.”

The same code can appear while copying files to a USB flash drive or external hard disk, reading a damaged disk, making a backup, installing Windows, or burning a DVD. The operation that triggered it is important: a USB copy needs connection and drive checks, while an optical-disc burn needs different media and burner checks.

0x8007045D is therefore a symptom, not a diagnosis. It does not identify one failed component, and it does not by itself prove that the disk is permanently dead. A loose cable can look like a failing disk, while a damaged file system can make a sound drive reject particular files. Record whether the failure affects the source or destination, whether it happens with one file or many, and whether the device remains visible in File Explorer. Those observations determine the safest next test.

What should I do before trying a repair?

Data protection comes before diagnostics. Some repairs can make a failing volume harder to recover, and erase or format commands destroy the data stored on that volume.

  1. Open and copy anything that still works. Move irreplaceable documents, photos, saved games, and other files to a separate healthy disk. Copy smaller groups if a large transfer repeatedly fails. Start with the files that cannot be replaced.
  2. Stop using the device if it disconnects repeatedly. Intermittent dropouts, unusual noises, or a drive that vanishes from File Explorer indicate that hardware diagnosis should take priority over a long repair scan.
  3. Use Windows’ safe-eject command. In the notification area, select the USB/removable-device icon and choose the affected device, or right-click it in File Explorer and select Eject when that option is available. Wait for the removal confirmation before unplugging.
  4. Do not format or erase yet. If the files matter, decide on backup or recovery before accepting a prompt to initialize, format, or erase the volume.

If a transfer is still possible, avoid opening many applications that write to the same disk. Keep the failing device connected only long enough to copy readable data or note its behavior. A safe-eject cycle clears pending writes and gives you a controlled starting point for the connection tests below.

How do I fix 0x8007045D when copying to a USB drive or external hard disk?

Start with low-risk connection tests, then check the volume. These steps distinguish an accessory or power problem from a failing drive.

1. Reseat the device and test another port

Safely eject the drive, unplug it, and firmly reconnect it. Try a different USB port on the same computer. If the computer has both front and rear ports, test a rear motherboard port; avoid relying on an unpowered hub while diagnosing a portable hard disk.

A port that works for another device but not for this drive may still have a loose connection or insufficient power. If the drive has a separate power adapter, check that the adapter is fully seated and that its indicator (if present) turns on. A portable disk that spins down, disappears, or reconnects during a transfer needs particular attention to power and enclosure connections.

2. Replace the cable and test the drive elsewhere

Use a known-good cable of the correct type. A cable can provide enough connection for the device to appear in Windows but fail when sustained reads or writes begin. Test the same copy with another computer if one is available.

Interpret the result as a pattern rather than a single success:

  • If a different cable or port fixes the operation, replace the faulty accessory or avoid the unreliable port.
  • If the error follows the drive through multiple cables, ports, and computers, suspect the drive, its enclosure, or its media.
  • If only one file fails while other files copy normally, that file or the source volume may be damaged; preserve the files that still open before experimenting further.
  • If the destination fails only during large transfers, repeat with a small group of files. This can reveal an intermittent connection or power problem without repeatedly stressing the entire device.

3. Check the drive letter in File Explorer

Open File Explorer and note the letter assigned to the affected volume, such as E: or F:. You must use that exact letter in the check command. If the device appears without a letter, do not guess one; resolve the connection or volume-recognition problem first. Also confirm that you are checking the volume involved in the failed operation, not another disk with a similar label.

4. Run CHKDSK with administrator rights

For a Windows volume that still mounts, use Microsoft’s file-system check:

  1. Open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator.
  2. At the elevated prompt, enter chkdsk /f X:, replacing X: with the affected drive letter. For example, a drive shown as E: uses chkdsk /f E:.
  3. Press Enter and let the check finish. If Windows says the volume is in use and offers to schedule the check for the next restart, accept only if you have already protected important data.

The /f switch asks Windows to correct file-system errors. CHKDSK cannot repair a broken cable, missing power, or mechanically failing hardware, so a clean result does not prove that the device is healthy if disconnects continue. A repair report also does not replace a backup: copy important files to another disk and monitor whether the same error returns.

5. Repair Windows system files only when the symptoms point to Windows itself

If the same I/O message appears with several healthy devices, or Windows shows broader signs of system-file corruption, run the image and system-file repairs from an elevated Command Prompt:

  1. Enter DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth and wait for it to complete.
  2. Then enter sfc /scannow and allow the verification to reach 100 percent.

DISM repairs the Windows component image; SFC checks protected system files. These commands address the Windows layer, not a failing external disk, damaged optical media, or a defective USB cable. Keep a backup even when the commands report that repairs were completed. Running them is most useful when multiple otherwise healthy devices fail on one computer, rather than when one external drive alone is unstable.

How should I separate a source problem from a destination problem?

Look at which side of the transfer triggers the error. If the same source file fails when copied to several healthy destinations, the source volume or that file is suspect. If many unrelated source files fail only when written to one destination, investigate the destination’s cable, port, power, file system, or media. A failure that moves with the computer instead of the device points toward the host’s drivers or Windows files.

Use a simple sequence: copy one small, known-good file; try a different file; then try a different destination or source. Record the drive letter, port, cable, computer, and result. This avoids repeatedly retrying a failing combination and makes it clearer whether a change actually helped.

Why does 0x8007045D appear while burning a DVD?

DVD burning has a separate failure path. The blank disc, disc brand, burn speed, optical drive, or burner firmware can prevent a write from completing even when USB storage works normally.

  1. Cancel the failed burn and inspect the disc for scratches, contamination, or an incompatible format.
  2. Try a new blank disc from a different package or brand. A batch of defective or incompatible media can produce repeated I/O errors.
  3. Select a slower burn speed in the burning program. The maximum speed printed on a disc is not always the most reliable speed for a particular burner.
  4. Check the burner’s documentation for supported media types and firmware updates. Apply firmware only when the drive manufacturer provides the correct package for that model.
  5. Test another disc after each change. If several known-good discs fail in the same burner, the optical drive is more suspect than the media.

A successful file copy to a USB device does not rule out a bad DVD, an incompatible disc type, or a failing optical burner; these are different media and hardware paths. Conversely, a single failed disc does not prove that the burner has failed. Change one variable at a time so you can distinguish a bad disc batch from a drive problem.

What if the error occurs during Windows installation or an update?

When 0x8007045D appears during setup or updating, first treat it as a possible I/O-path problem rather than assuming that the Windows Update service alone is responsible.

  • Disconnect unnecessary external drives, hubs, card readers, and other USB hardware, leaving only the keyboard, mouse, display, and installation media required for the task.
  • Reconnect the installation or target drive firmly and try another port. If a USB installer is involved, recreate or replace the installer only after confirming that the target disk and its cable are reliable.
  • Run the Windows Update troubleshooter when the failure occurs inside Windows Update.
  • Verify that the target volume has sufficient free space and that its storage driver is recognized correctly.
  • If Windows itself shows corruption symptoms, run the DISM and SFC commands in the order shown above.

Microsoft’s current Windows 10 and Windows 11 update-code listings contain many update-specific codes but do not identify 0x8007045D as an update-service code. The message therefore remains a clue to investigate the storage and connection path. During setup, avoid formatting a target disk that may contain needed files until you have confirmed the disk and made a recovery decision.

How can I tell whether the drive is failing?

Reproducibility is the most useful practical signal. A single bad cable or port can mimic a dead drive; an error that follows the device across several known-good connections is much more concerning.

  • Likely connection or power issue: the device works after changing the port, cable, or power arrangement.
  • Possible file-system issue: the device remains connected, but particular files or directories fail and CHKDSK reports errors.
  • Possible drive, enclosure, or media failure: the device disconnects, makes unusual noises, disappears on multiple computers, or produces the same error with different cables and ports.
  • Possible host Windows issue: multiple otherwise healthy devices fail on one computer while they work elsewhere.

If the error follows the drive, copy whatever remains readable and stop before erase, initialize, or format prompts. For valuable files, a professional data-recovery service is safer than repeated write attempts. Recovery is not guaranteed, and continued use can reduce what remains recoverable. If the files are replaceable and the drive continues to fail after connection checks, replacement is usually more sensible than trusting it for future backups.

Which next step fits the symptom?

Operation Likely layer to check Low-risk next action Escalation signal
Copying to a USB flash drive Port, cable, power, flash media, or file system Safe eject, another port, another cable, then chkdsk /f X: The same drive fails on several computers
Copying to an external hard disk Cable, power, enclosure, controller, or disk Use a direct port and known-good cable; copy readable data first Repeated disconnects, unusual noises, or errors on every connection
Burning a DVD Disc condition, disc compatibility, burn speed, burner, or firmware Different disc or brand and a slower burn speed Several known-good discs fail in the same burner
Windows setup or update Installation media, target storage, drivers, free space, or Windows files Remove unnecessary hardware, verify storage, run the troubleshooter, then DISM/SFC when appropriate The target disk is not stable or the error persists across clean media and ports
Reading an existing disk or backup Media condition, file system, controller, or drive Copy files that open and check the affected volume Important data is inaccessible and the device is deteriorating

The table is a decision aid, not a guarantee. The same code can involve more than one layer—for example, a loose cable may corrupt the file system, or a failing enclosure may make a healthy disk appear unreliable. Retest after each low-risk change and keep notes of what changed.

What mistakes can make the problem worse?

  • Formatting before backing up: formatting is data-destructive and should not be the first response to an I/O error.
  • Repeatedly unplugging without safe eject: abrupt removal can worsen file-system damage, especially while writes are pending.
  • Running repair scans on a disappearing drive: stabilize the connection and protect readable data before a lengthy scan.
  • Assuming the code identifies one component: 0x8007045D is a symptom shared by cables, ports, media, controllers, file systems, and drives.
  • Using a random firmware package: burner and storage firmware must match the exact hardware model; an incorrect package can create a new failure.
  • Treating a successful one-time copy as proof of health: intermittent hardware can work briefly and fail under sustained transfer.
  • Repeating a failed operation indefinitely: endless retries can add stress without revealing whether the source, destination, or connection is at fault. Change one variable and reassess.
  • Assuming a repair message means the hardware is fixed: CHKDSK, DISM, and SFC operate at different layers and cannot substitute for a stable cable, reliable power, or a healthy disk.

If the I/O error is being caused by an outdated, corrupted, or missing device driver, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan more than 100 devices, show the current and recommended driver versions, install official drivers, and provide backup, restore, and scheduled-scan options. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, with a 2-day free trial that requires no credit card before a subscription; results vary, and it cannot repair every storage failure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 0x8007045D the same as a CRC error?

No. Both can occur during file transfers, but 0x8007045D is Windows’ I/O-device error code. The code alone does not identify whether the underlying cause is the cable, media, file system, controller, or drive.

Why does testing the drive on another computer help?

It separates a computer-specific problem from a device-specific one. If the same drive fails on multiple computers with different ports and cables, the evidence shifts toward the drive, enclosure, or media rather than the original Windows installation.

Can I keep using a drive after CHKDSK reports repairs?

You can test it cautiously, but a repaired file system does not prove the hardware is reliable. Keep an independent backup and replace or recover the drive if disconnects or I/O errors return.

Should I initialize a disk that Windows says is unknown?

Not when it contains files you need. Initialization changes disk structures and can complicate recovery; preserve the device and make a recovery decision before accepting that prompt.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is the title sometimes written as 0X80007045D?

That spelling has an extra zero. Microsoft documents 0x8007045D as ERROR_IO_DEVICE, so use the canonical spelling when searching support pages while recognizing the extra-zero variant.

Will changing the USB port erase my files?

No. Safely ejecting the device and reconnecting it to another compatible port is a low-risk diagnostic. Do not format or initialize it when the data matters.

What if only DVD burns fail but USB copies work?

Treat it as an optical-media or burner issue. Try a different disc or brand, reduce burn speed, and check the burner’s supported media and firmware. USB success does not rule out a defective optical path.

Should I run DISM and SFC on every 0x8007045D error?

No. They address Windows image and protected system-file corruption. Use them when several healthy devices fail on one computer or Windows shows broader corruption symptoms; they cannot repair a bad cable, disc, or failing drive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

0x8007045D means Windows could not complete an I/O request. Back up readable files, safely eject and reconnect the device, test another port and known-good cable, then run chkdsk /f X: on a mounted Windows volume. Use DISM followed by SFC only for likely Windows corruption, and handle DVD failures with different media and slower burn speeds. If the error follows the drive across connections, avoid formatting and seek recovery or replacement based on the value of the data.
