If Windows 11 reports 0x8007045D, the request failed because Windows could not complete an input/output (I/O) operation. The code does not, by itself, prove that your internal drive is dead: the failed path might be Windows Update, setup files, a USB installer, an external disk, a cable, a port, or another device. The spelling in the title contains an extra zero; Microsoft documents 0x8007045D as error 1117, ERROR_IO_DEVICE, with the message “The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.” (Microsoft Learn)
Back up personal files first. Then identify exactly when the error appears and follow the matching branch below. A Windows Update failure needs a different sequence from an error while booting installation media or copying files.

What does Windows error 0x8007045D mean?
0x8007045D means that Windows sent an input/output request and the device path did not complete it. “I/O” covers reading and writing data, so the code describes a failed operation rather than naming one defective part. Microsoft lists it as error 1117 (0x45D) under ERROR_IO_DEVICE (Microsoft Learn).
The nine-character form 0X08007045D is not a separate Windows error in the Microsoft documentation cited here. Check the original dialog, Windows Update history, setup screen, or log and use the exact code shown there. If it is 0x8007045D, the operation that was running is the most useful clue.

| Where the message appears | What the failed I/O path could involve | Start with |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Update | Downloaded or cached update files, the system drive, a driver, connectivity, or an attached device | Update troubleshooter, restart, cache and hardware checks |
| Windows 11 Setup or an upgrade | Existing system files, a driver, security software, storage, or a device attached during setup | Remove nonessential hardware, update drivers, inspect Device Manager |
| Booting from a USB installer | Corrupt installation media, the USB drive, a port, or firmware boot settings | Recreate the media on a blank drive and try a direct port |
| Copying or opening files | The source disk, destination disk, cable, enclosure, or controller | Stop repeated writes, secure a backup, then isolate the path |
How do I identify the failed operation before changing anything?
Record the stage in which the error occurs. A code that appears while downloading is investigated differently from one that appears after rebooting or while reading a particular disk.
- Copy the complete message and code exactly as displayed. Note capitalization, punctuation, and any drive letter or file name.
- Write down what was happening: downloading, installing, restarting, booting from USB, copying files, or opening an internal or external drive.
- Note whether an external drive, dock, card reader, printer, phone, or other USB device was connected.
- After each change, repeat the same operation and record whether the error moves, disappears, or returns at the same percentage or file.
This record prevents a common mistake: assuming that every 0x8007045D report means the internal disk needs replacement.

Make a separate copy of important personal files before clearing caches, repairing a disk, resetting Windows, or reinstalling. Use another physical drive or a cloud location, and check that several copied files open from the backup. Include documents, photos, saved game data, project folders, browser exports, and any files stored outside the usual user folders.
- Do not format a drive or delete partitions while you are still trying to determine the failing path.
- If an external disk is producing the error, avoid repeatedly writing to it; copy the most important readable files first.
- Keep the computer on reliable power during updates and setup. An interruption while Windows is writing system files can create a second problem.
How do I fix 0x8007045D when Windows Update fails?
Use the low-risk Windows Update sequence first. Microsoft’s update guidance recommends checking connectivity, permissions, hardware, cache, drivers, free space, and pending restarts (Microsoft Support).
1. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
- Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run.
- Apply any action it recommends, restart Windows, and select Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.
Microsoft also provides an automated Get Help troubleshooter and a separate Windows Update Troubleshooter page (Microsoft Support).
2. Check power, network, and account permissions
Use stable power and a reliable Internet connection. Sign in with an account that has administrator access, and finish any restart that Windows is already requesting. A pending reboot can leave update components in an incomplete state.
3. Disconnect unnecessary hardware
Shut down if practical, then remove external storage, USB hubs, docks, card readers, and other devices that are not needed for the update. Leave only essential input devices and the network connection. Retry the update before reconnecting accessories one at a time.

4. Reset the Windows Update cache
This procedure removes cached update packages, not your personal documents. Open Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin), stop the Windows Update service, clear the contents of the cache folder, and start the service again:
net stop wuauserv
In File Explorer, enter C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution in the address bar and delete the files and folders inside it. Do not delete unrelated directories. Return to the administrator window and run:
net start wuauserv
Restart, then check for updates again. If Windows says files are in use, confirm that the service stopped before trying to clear the folder.

Open Settings > Time & language > Date & time, enable automatic time, and confirm the time zone. Ensure the system drive has room for the download and temporary installation files. Microsoft lists 16 GB free for a 32-bit upgrade and 20 GB for a 64-bit upgrade on its current update support page; those figures are requirements stated by Microsoft, not a guarantee that a particular update will install (Microsoft Support).
6. Update third-party hardware drivers
Install current drivers from the computer, motherboard, storage-controller, graphics, network, or peripheral manufacturer. A driver that cannot reliably read or write through its device can make an update appear to be a storage failure. Restart after installing drivers and retry Windows Update.
How do I fix the error during Windows 11 Setup or an upgrade?
Setup failures need a broader isolation process. Microsoft’s upgrade guidance includes removing hardware, updating drivers, checking Device Manager, using a clean boot, and repairing system or disk files where the symptom supports it (Microsoft Support).
1. Remove nonessential hardware
Unplug external drives, USB accessories, docks, printers, cameras, and memory-card readers. Keep the installation target and essential keyboard or mouse connected. If Setup succeeds, reconnect devices after Windows 11 is running and test them individually.

2. Install pending Windows and hardware updates
Complete available Windows updates before starting the upgrade again. Obtain important hardware-driver updates from the device manufacturer, especially for storage, chipset, graphics, network, and USB controllers.
3. Inspect Device Manager
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand categories related to storage, USB, disk drives, and controllers.
- Look for a yellow warning icon or a device that has disappeared.
- Use the manufacturer’s current driver or remove a malfunctioning peripheral before retrying Setup.
Do not disable random devices as a test; record what you change so it can be restored.
4. Temporarily address non-Microsoft security software
Microsoft includes removing or pausing non-Microsoft security software as a possible upgrade step when it interferes with Setup. Only do this when you can follow the product’s documented uninstall or pause procedure, and restore protection immediately after the upgrade attempt. Do not treat this step as proof that security software caused the I/O error.
5. Try a clean boot
A clean boot starts Windows with non-Microsoft services and startup programs disabled, reducing software conflicts during Setup. Use the System Configuration utility to hide Microsoft services, disable the remaining services, disable startup items in Task Manager, restart, and run Setup. Re-enable the services and startup items after testing so the computer returns to its normal configuration.

6. Repair system files when Windows itself is involved
Open Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin) and run the repair command Microsoft lists for upgrade errors:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for it to finish, restart, and try Setup again. The command requires administrator permission and repairs the running Windows image; it does not establish that a physical disk is healthy.
7. Check the system volume when the symptom points there
For repeated read or write failures on the system volume, Microsoft includes this command in its upgrade guidance:

chkdsk /f C:
Run it from an administrator window. Because the system volume is in use, Windows may schedule the check for the next restart. Disk checking can take time; do not interrupt it. Back up first, because repair work and a failing disk can expose files that were already difficult to read.

Yes. If the failure occurs while Setup is reading USB media or copying files from it, the media, flash drive, USB port, or boot configuration is part of the I/O path. Recreate the installer rather than repeatedly retrying a suspect drive.
Create fresh media
- Open Microsoft’s Windows 11 download page.
- Choose Create installation media for another PC in the Media Creation Tool.
- Select the required language, Windows edition, and 64-bit architecture.
- Connect a blank USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of capacity.
- Choose the USB drive and let the tool create the bootable media.
Microsoft warns that creating the media deletes all content on that USB drive. A blank 16 GB drive is a practical choice because it exceeds the stated minimum, but capacity alone does not make it a Windows license or prove that it contains installation files.
Test the physical connection
Use a different direct USB port rather than a hub or dock, and recreate the media if the first attempt fails. If the error follows one flash drive but not another, stop using the suspect drive for installation. If it appears with several known-good drives on the same computer, investigate the computer’s USB controller, firmware, or storage path.
How do I boot from the installation media safely?
- Back up personal files and confirm the Windows edition, language, architecture, and activation information you need.
- Attach the newly created USB and restart the PC.
- Open the manufacturer’s boot menu, or enter BIOS/UEFI and move the USB device ahead of the internal drive in the boot order.
- Select the USB device and follow the Windows Setup prompts.
The key used for the boot menu varies by manufacturer. Secure Boot settings and firmware-specific instructions can also affect whether the USB appears; use the computer maker’s instructions if the device is missing. Do not start a clean installation until you understand which disk and partitions Setup will change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow can I tell whether the problem is a drive, cable, port, or installer?
Change one part of the path at a time and repeat the same operation. The pattern is more informative than the hexadecimal code alone.
| Observed pattern | Most useful next test | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Only one external drive triggers the error | Stop writes, copy readable files, and test a different cable or enclosure if available | The drive or its connection is implicated, but the code alone does not identify which one |
| Several USB installers fail on one port | Use a different direct port and check firmware or controller drivers | The port, controller, or boot configuration becomes more likely |
| The same installer fails on different computers | Recreate the media on another blank USB drive | The media-creation path or flash drive is suspect |
| Windows Update fails but USB setup works | Concentrate on update cache, drivers, services, space, and restart state | The update path is more likely than a general storage failure |
| Setup fails while writing to the internal system disk | Back up, run the supported disk and system checks, and assess the disk connection | The internal storage path needs attention, but replacement is not proven by the code alone |
Can I reinstall Windows 11 without losing my files?
Sometimes, but the answer depends on the setup route and the choices shown for the existing installation. An in-place upgrade may offer an option to keep personal files and apps; a clean installation can erase the target Windows installation and its partitions. Read every Setup choice, verify the selected disk, and keep an independent backup before proceeding.

If the computer cannot reliably read the disk, do not use a reinstall as a first “repair.” Secure the files that are still readable, isolate the failing hardware path, and only then decide whether an upgrade, reset, or clean installation is appropriate.
What should I do if none of these steps works?
- Write down the exact code, operation, percentage, drive letter, attached devices, and the last change that helped or failed.
- Repeat the operation with nonessential USB devices removed and, where relevant, freshly created installation media.
- Check the manufacturer’s support information for firmware, storage-controller, chipset, and USB-driver updates.
- Stop before formatting, deleting partitions, or resetting Windows if the backup is incomplete.
- If the same disk or port fails across multiple operations, arrange hardware diagnosis or data-recovery help rather than continuing destructive retries.
The safest path is determined by failure stage, data risk, hardware involvement, and reversibility. A troubleshooter and restart are easy to undo; cache deletion and disk checks need a backup; reset and clean installation can permanently change the Windows installation.

Frequently asked questions
Will 0x8007045D damage my files immediately?
The code reports a failed I/O request; it is not itself a command to delete data. Repeated writes to a device that is already returning errors can increase risk, so copy important readable files to separate storage before further repair or installation attempts.
Why does the error disappear after unplugging a dock?
A dock adds a USB hub, cable, controller, and sometimes storage or display components to the I/O path. Removing it can isolate the computer from that path, but it does not prove the dock is defective; test the device directly and reconnect components one at a time.
Does the Windows Update troubleshooter repair a failing SSD?
No. The troubleshooter addresses update configuration and related software conditions. If failures continue during ordinary file access or with multiple installers, treat the storage path as a separate hardware investigation and protect your data first.

Is a 16 GB USB drive always enough for Windows 11 media?
Microsoft states a minimum capacity of 8 GB for the Media Creation Tool. A 16 GB drive exceeds that minimum, but the drive must still be blank because the creation process erases its contents, and the tool must successfully write the selected edition and architecture.
