If Windows 10 displays 0X80007045D, first verify the original message: that spelling contains an extra zero. The intended code is usually 0x8007045D, an I/O device error that means Windows cannot reliably read or write required data. A different code, 0x80070005, means access is denied and requires a permissions-focused diagnosis.

For 0x8007045D, protect your files first, then test the USB port, cable, card reader and drive; repair the file system only after a backup; and use Windows component repairs when the failure occurs during an update or upgrade. Repeated errors on several computers usually point to failing media rather than a Windows permission setting.

What does 0x8007045D mean, and is it the same as “access denied”?

No. 0x8007045D identifies an I/O path problem: Windows is having difficulty reading from or writing to data needed for an operation. Microsoft Q&A guidance describes it as a computer having trouble accessing or reading required files. SanDisk documents the same code when data is added to a USB flash drive, external drive or memory card.

The phrase “denied” in a search query can lead you toward the wrong fix. Confirm every character in the dialog, Event Viewer entry, screenshot or setup log before changing permissions or formatting anything.

Code What it generally indicates Typical investigation
0x8007045D I/O device error; Windows cannot consistently read or write required data. Check the physical connection, removable media, file system and storage health.
0x80070005 E_ACCESSDENIED, a permissions or access-control error. Investigate account rights, security software and folder or registry permissions instead of treating the disk as defective.
0X80007045D Likely a mistyped or misread version of one of the codes above. Return to the original source and copy the code exactly before taking action.

Reported causes of 0x8007045D include damaged Windows or application files, incomplete downloads, faulty memory, file-system problems, an unsafe removal or abrupt power loss, a loose or bad USB connection, and storage that is beginning to fail. The code alone does not identify which part is defective.

What should you do before trying a repair?

Put data protection ahead of diagnosis. An I/O error can be an early sign that a removable drive or other storage device is deteriorating, and repair attempts can place additional load on it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Copy irreplaceable files while the device still opens. Use another healthy drive or a network destination. Work in small batches and stop if the device repeatedly disappears, becomes unusually slow or makes unfamiliar noises.
  2. Record the exact failure. Note the operation that triggered it (copying, installing a game, Windows Update, an upgrade or startup), the drive letter, and whether the device was connected through a hub, dock or card reader.
  3. Do not format yet. Formatting and reformatting erase data or make recovery more difficult. SanDisk specifically treats reformatting as data-destructive.
  4. Avoid repeated retries on unstable hardware. If readable files are already backed up and the error persists, move to controlled tests rather than launching the same copy over and over.

If the original dialog is gone, look for the wording in Event Viewer or the relevant setup log before deciding whether you have 0x8007045D or 0x80070005.

How can you check the cable, port, reader and drive?

Connection checks are reversible and should come before file-system repair. The goal is to discover whether the error follows the Windows installation or follows a particular piece of hardware.

Reconnect the device safely

  1. Close files and applications using the device.
  2. In the notification area, choose Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media, select the affected device and wait for the removal message.
  3. Disconnect it, wait a few seconds, then reconnect it firmly.
  4. Retry the operation once. If the error returns, continue testing rather than repeatedly retrying.

Remove weak points in the physical path

  • Plug the drive directly into a different USB port on the computer, not through a hub or dock. A port on the opposite side of a laptop or on the rear of a desktop can use a different controller.
  • Use a compatible replacement cable if the device has a detachable cable. Match the connector and required power specification; a cable that physically fits is not automatically suitable.
  • If the media is in a card reader, reseat the card and, if available, test another compatible reader.
  • For a bus-powered external drive, avoid sharing a marginal hub with other high-power devices while testing.

SanDisk lists secure connections, another USB port and another cable among the first checks for this error. These tests do not prove that a drive is healthy; they only help isolate a bad port, cable or reader.

Test another computer

Connect the same drive, cable and reader to another computer and repeat a small, non-critical read or write. If the error follows the device, cable or reader, that component is more suspect than Windows permissions. If the device works elsewhere but fails on one Windows 10 computer, investigate that computer’s USB controller, Windows files or software interference.

How do you check and repair the file system safely?

After backing up what you can, use CHKDSK on the affected volume. The /f switch performs the conservative file-system repair. The /r switch adds a deeper search for unreadable sectors and can take a long time, especially on a large or troubled disk.

Run the initial check

  1. Identify the affected drive letter in File Explorer. Do not guess if several removable volumes are connected.
  2. Open an elevated terminal: right-click Start, choose Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin), and approve the User Account Control prompt.
  3. Run the command with the correct letter, replacing E: with the affected volume:
chkdsk E: /f
  1. Allow the command to finish. If Windows says the volume is in use, schedule the check for the next restart only when you have already protected the data and can leave the computer available.
  2. Retry the original operation once after CHKDSK completes.

When is /r appropriate?

Use chkdsk E: /r only after the backup and the shorter /f check, when read errors continue and you need a deeper examination. Keep the computer on power and expect the scan to take substantially longer. On a drive that is disconnecting, making unusual noises or becoming slower, prioritize copying data and professional recovery over a prolonged scan.

CHKDSK can repair logical file-system structures; it cannot repair physically damaged storage hardware. A clean result therefore does not guarantee that a drive with recurring disconnects is safe for important files.

How do you repair Windows files when Update or setup triggers the error?

If the I/O message appears during Windows Update, an upgrade or installation rather than while accessing one removable drive, repair the Windows component store and protected system files. Run DISM first and SFC second from an elevated terminal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Right-click Start and open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
  2. Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Wait for DISM to complete. It can take time and may appear to pause.

  1. Without closing the elevated window, run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows after both commands finish, then retry the update or setup operation.

These commands address damaged Windows components and protected system files; they do not repair a failing external drive, bad cable or defective memory module.

Reset update components if the failure remains

Microsoft Q&A troubleshooting guidance also describes rebuilding the Windows Update download and catalog caches. This procedure changes update-service folders, so use it only when the failure is tied to Update or setup and you have an administrator account.

  1. Open an elevated Command Prompt or Terminal.
  2. Stop the services:
net stop wuauserv
net stop bits
net stop cryptsvc
  1. Rename the two caches so Windows can create fresh folders:
ren C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
ren C:WindowsSystem32catroot2 catroot2.old
  1. Start the services again:
net start cryptsvc
net start bits
net start wuauserv
  1. Restart the computer and try Windows Update or setup again.

If a command reports that a service or folder is missing, do not improvise by deleting other directories. Record the message and return to the physical-device tests or obtain Windows-specific support.

When is a clean boot useful?

A clean boot is a diagnostic, not a permanent operating mode. If the error occurs only during setup or an update and disappears when non-Microsoft startup services are disabled, a third-party service or startup program may be interfering.

  1. Press Windows, type System Configuration, and open the desktop app.
  2. On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services, then disable the remaining services temporarily.
  3. Open Task Manager from the Startup tab and disable nonessential startup items.
  4. Restart and repeat the failed update or setup step.
  5. If the error disappears, re-enable items in groups and restart between tests to identify the conflict.
  6. Restore normal startup after testing. If security software was temporarily isolated as part of troubleshooting, turn its protection back on immediately after the test.

A clean boot that changes nothing makes a physical connection, storage device or Windows component problem more likely; it does not prove that any single service is innocent.

When should you recover or replace the storage device?

Plan recovery or replacement when the same device repeatedly disconnects, produces the I/O error on more than one computer, reports read errors, or becomes abnormally slow. Copy whatever remains readable before warranty service, replacement or any action that could erase the volume.

Choose the next action based on the evidence

  • One bad cable or port: keep using the verified connection and replace the accessory.
  • Logical file-system errors only: complete the backup, run CHKDSK and monitor the volume closely.
  • Failures across ports and computers: stop treating the issue as a Windows setting; use data-recovery services if the files are valuable, then replace or warranty the device.
  • Incomplete downloads or damaged installer files: once the storage path is stable, download the required package again rather than repeatedly using the partial copy.
  • Suspected memory problems: if unrelated reads and writes fail across healthy storage, have the computer’s memory and hardware checked instead of repeatedly repairing one volume.

Do not return a drive to normal game-library or backup duty merely because one scan completed. Recurring I/O errors are evidence that the device or its connection still needs attention.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should you not do first?

  • Do not change permissions solely because a search result says “denied.” First distinguish 0x8007045D from 0x80070005.
  • Do not format before securing needed files. Reformatting is data-destructive and cannot be undone by a normal Windows setting.
  • Do not keep retrying a failing drive. Repeated attempts can consume time while a deteriorating device becomes less readable.
  • Do not assume CHKDSK repairs hardware. It works on logical file-system problems, not damaged heads, flash cells, controllers, cables or ports.
  • Do not run Windows repairs as a substitute for connection tests. DISM and SFC are appropriate for update or setup failures, not for a removable drive that fails on multiple computers.

After you have protected your files and completed the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair is an optional shortcut for Windows issues such as damaged system elements, invalid redirects, shared DLL problems, temporary-file buildup and app-crash diagnostics. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7, offers a category-based free trial of at least two days before subscription, complements antivirus rather than replacing it, and results vary—no tool repairs every crash or failing storage device.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can this error damage a game installation or save files?

An interrupted read or write can leave an installation or update incomplete, while saves that were already written may remain usable. Once the storage path is stable, use the game platform’s file-verification or repair function and restore saves from a known-good backup rather than continuing to write to a device that is disconnecting.

How can I recover the exact code after the pop-up disappeared?

Check the relevant entry in Event Viewer under Windows Logs, and review the setup or update log associated with the failed operation. Copy the full hexadecimal string, including every zero, before choosing a permissions or storage remedy.

Is the deeper CHKDSK scan always the better choice?

No. The /r option takes much longer and places sustained read activity on the device. It is a later diagnostic for persistent read errors after data is protected, not an automatic upgrade over the shorter /f repair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Could antivirus software be responsible for the message?

Third-party security software can interfere with setup or update, which is why a clean boot can help isolate software conflicts. Temporarily isolating protection is diagnostic only; restore it immediately after the test and do not use that step to explain failures that follow the drive to another computer.

Will changing folder permissions fix 0x8007045D?

Usually not. Permission changes address an access-denied condition such as 0x80070005; they do not correct a bad cable, unreadable sectors, a damaged file system or a storage device that disconnects.
