If Windows 11 reports 0x8007045D while an update or upgrade fails, Windows is reporting an input/output (I/O) device error. The title phrase “How to fix 0x80007045D Windows 11 failed” contains an extra zero in the code; Microsoft’s Win32 reference lists 0x0000045D as ERROR_IO_DEVICE, while Microsoft Answers commonly shows the surfaced form 0x8007045D. Confirm the exact characters in Settings > Windows Update > Update history or in the original dialog before changing anything. Back up important files, disconnect external hardware, and then work through the update, storage, driver, and system-file checks below.
What does 0x8007045D mean in Windows 11?
0x8007045D means Windows could not complete a read or write operation through a device. Microsoft defines the underlying Win32 value, 0x0000045D, as “The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.” An I/O error can involve the internal system drive, a USB flash drive, an SD card, an external hard drive, a dock, a cable, a port, or a driver. It can also appear when Windows Update is trying to stage files and the update cache or system files are damaged.

Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchThis code does not identify one failed component by itself. A repeatable failure tied to one removable device is a different diagnostic case from an update that fails with every peripheral removed. Treat the code as a direction to isolate the device and operation involved, not as proof that a particular disk is permanently dead.
Check the spelling before troubleshooting
The string 0X80007045D in the title is not the form shown in Microsoft’s Win32 error reference. The likely intended values are 0x8007045D or 0x0000045D. Windows is not case-sensitive here, but the extra zero changes the text you search for and may lead you to the wrong instructions. Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history, select the failed update if it is listed, and copy the complete code. If a dialog produced the error, photograph or copy that message before closing it.

Is the 0x8007045D error dangerous?
The error is a warning that a requested transfer did not complete; it is not, by itself, a malware diagnosis. It can be caused by a loose connection or a corrupted update file, but repeated I/O errors on the same drive can precede data loss. Stop and back up irreplaceable documents, saved games, photos, and project files before running repair commands on a drive that is making unusual noises, disconnecting, or repeatedly returning errors.
Microsoft recommends backing up before update troubleshooting and specifically describes copying files to a USB drive. A backup drive is optional and does not repair an internal disk; its purpose is to give you a recoverable copy before further testing. If copying a file repeatedly fails from one disk, prioritize getting the data off that disk rather than repeatedly retrying the Windows upgrade.
Which symptoms point to the right fix?
Use the scope of the failure to choose the next branch. The table is a diagnostic guide, not a guarantee that one component is at fault.
| What you observe | Likely area to test first | Useful next action |
|---|---|---|
| Only one USB flash drive, SD card, or external disk triggers the code | The device, its cable, enclosure, port, or storage media | Back up what is readable, try a different cable or port, and test the device on another computer |
| The error appears only while Windows Update downloads or installs | Update cache, free space, Windows components, or a driver | Run the Windows Update troubleshooter, reset the cache, check space, then repair components |
| Every update fails, including with all peripherals unplugged | Internal storage, system files, driver state, or Windows Update state | Run disk and system-file checks and inspect Device Manager |
| A specific printer, dock, scanner, or adapter is connected when the failure occurs | That peripheral or its driver | Disconnect it, retry, then update or reinstall its driver from the hardware maker |
| The failure happens during a file copy or installation outside Windows Update | The source or destination volume and its connection | Identify the actual drive letter and check that volume rather than assuming it is C: |
Also note the operation, device, and persistence: whether the operation is Windows Update, a file copy, an installation, or optical-media access; whether the device is the system disk, USB, SD, or external storage; and whether the failure is one-time or repeatable. That record makes later support much more effective.
How do I fix 0x8007045D Windows 11 failed?
Follow these steps in order. The early steps are reversible isolation checks; the later commands repair a selected volume or Windows components.
1. Back up important files
- Connect a known-good USB flash drive or other backup destination with enough capacity.
- Copy documents, photos, saved-game folders, browser exports, and any work that cannot be recreated.
- Open several copied files from the backup to confirm that the copy is usable.
If the source drive repeatedly disconnects or returns I/O errors, copy the most valuable files first. Do not format or initialize a suspect drive while trying to recover data.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2. Disconnect nonessential hardware
Shut down or safely eject removable storage, then unplug USB flash drives, external hard drives, docks, printers, scanners, card readers, and other nonessential devices. Leave only the keyboard, mouse, display, network connection, and any hardware required to boot. Microsoft explicitly advises unplugging nonessential hardware during upgrade troubleshooting. Retry the update with the smaller hardware set, then reconnect devices one at a time after a successful attempt. If reconnecting one device immediately reproduces the error, treat that device, its cable, and its driver as the active branch.

3. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
- Open Settings.
- Choose System, then Troubleshoot.
- Select Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run.
- Apply any recommended correction and restart when prompted.
Windows 11 may also offer the Windows Update troubleshooter through the Get Help app. Run it after nonessential hardware has been removed so it is not trying to diagnose a peripheral that you have already isolated.
4. Reset the Windows Update download cache
Corrupted files in the update cache can make the same package fail on every retry. Resetting the cache removes downloaded update data; Windows will download fresh copies later.
- Press Win + R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. - In the Services console, locate Windows Update, right-click it, and choose Stop.
- Open File Explorer and go to
C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution. - Delete the contents of that folder, not the parent
Windowsfolder. If a file is in use, verify that the Windows Update service is stopped before trying again. - Return to Services, right-click Windows Update, and choose Start.
- Restart Windows and check for updates again.
Do not delete unrelated folders under C:Windows. The first post-reset check may take longer because the update files must be downloaded again.

5. Check power, network, date, and time
- Keep a laptop connected to AC power throughout the download and restart phases.
- Use a stable internet connection; if Wi-Fi is unreliable, move closer to the access point or use Ethernet where available.
- Open Settings > Time & language > Date & time, enable Set time automatically, and select Sync now.
- Temporarily avoid sleep, hibernation, or closing the laptop lid while the update is installing.
An interrupted transfer can look like a device error even when the storage hardware is healthy, so stabilize these conditions before repeating the operation.
6. Free enough space for the upgrade
Microsoft Support states that an upgrade needs 16 GB for a 32-bit installation and 20 GB for a 64-bit installation. The page is accessed in 2026 but does not display a publication year. Check Settings > System > Storage, remove or move files you have already backed up, and empty the Recycle Bin. Leave additional working room beyond the minimum when possible, because Windows needs temporary space while it stages and rolls back an update.
Do not assume that an external disk solves a shortage on the system volume. Windows may still require free space on the volume where it stages the installation.
7. Inspect and reinstall problem drivers
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand categories such as Disk drives, Universal Serial Bus controllers, Storage controllers, Network adapters, and System devices.
- Look for a yellow warning icon or a device that appeared immediately before the failures began.
- Right-click the suspect device, choose Properties, and read the status on the General tab.
- Use Update driver and install the current driver supplied by the hardware maker. If the problem began after a driver change, use Roll Back Driver when that option is available.
- If the device remains faulty, choose Uninstall device, restart Windows, and install the maker’s current package. Disconnect the physical device first when the wizard allows it.
Do not install a random driver package that merely matches a device name. Record the model and the current driver version before changing it, and avoid removing a storage-controller driver unless you have a recovery plan.

8. Check the volume that is actually involved
Run disk checks from an elevated Command Prompt: open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator. Confirm the drive letter before running a command.
For the Windows system volume
Type:
chkdsk /f C:
Press Enter. If Windows says the volume is in use and asks to schedule the check for the next restart, type Y, restart, and let the scan finish. Do not power off while the scheduled check is running.
For a removable or secondary volume
Replace X: with the letter shown in File Explorer, then run:
chkdsk /R X:
The /R option searches for readable information in bad sectors and attempts recovery, so it can take substantially longer on a large or failing disk. If the error is tied to an external device, check that device’s volume rather than automatically checking C:. A Microsoft Q&A response recommends this approach for removable-media cases, but it is diagnostic guidance, not a universal explanation for every 0x8007045D report.
If the check reports unreadable sectors, repeated disconnections, or rapidly worsening behavior, stop using the drive for ordinary work and concentrate on data recovery or replacement after your backup is secure.
9. Repair Windows component and system files
In the same elevated Command Prompt, run DISM first and then System File Checker:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for DISM to finish, even if progress appears to pause. Then run:

sfc /scannow
Restart when both commands complete and check Windows Update again. DISM repairs the component store that Windows uses for servicing; sfc /scannow checks protected system files. If either command reports that it could not complete, record the exact message instead of repeatedly interrupting it.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →10. Retry once and record the result
- Restart the computer after the cache, driver, disk, or component repair you performed.
- Leave nonessential peripherals disconnected for the retry.
- Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates, or resume the failed upgrade.
- Record the complete error code, update name or number, time of failure, and whether the system had any removable storage attached.
If the update succeeds, reconnect hardware one item at a time and test after each connection. If it fails again, your notes should show whether the failure is tied to one device or occurs with all peripherals removed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should I do if the error follows one USB or external drive?
Stop treating it as a generic Windows Update problem. Try a different USB port directly on the computer, a known-good cable, and—where practical—the same device on another computer. Check whether the device receives a consistent drive letter and whether ordinary file copies fail outside Windows Update.
Copy readable data before running lengthy repair operations. If the same drive fails on multiple computers or reports unreadable sectors, contact the drive or enclosure maker and plan for replacement. A successful update with that device unplugged does not prove the device is healthy; it only shows that removing it avoided the immediate conflict.
What should I do if every update fails with no external hardware?
Complete the cache reset, space check, driver inspection, volume check, and DISM/SFC sequence above. If failures continue, compare the exact code and update name across attempts. A code that changes after each attempt may indicate several independent problems, while the same code on every update points toward a persistent storage, driver, or Windows servicing issue.
Use Microsoft Support when the error persists with all nonessential hardware removed, especially if the system volume reports errors or the computer becomes unstable. Provide the exact code, the affected volume, the commands you ran, and whether the failure occurs during download, installation, restart, or rollback. If one peripheral is consistently implicated, involve that hardware vendor as well.
As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can try to fix more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements and shared DLL problems, while also offering settings tweaks, temporary-file cleanup, privacy and vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, file shredder, and app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7; its free trial lasts at least two days by category before a paid subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.
Frequently asked questions
Can a bad USB port alone cause this code?
Yes. A damaged or underpowered port can interrupt transfers without the storage device itself being defective. Testing the same device through another direct port, without a hub or dock, helps separate a port problem from a media problem.

Will changing the drive letter fix an I/O error?
Changing a drive letter only helps when another volume or mapped location is creating a path conflict. It cannot repair unreadable sectors, a failing cable, or a defective controller, so use it only after confirming that the volume is otherwise accessible.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Should I disable antivirus software during the update?
Do not disable security protection as a first response to this code. First isolate hardware, reset the update cache, and repair Windows components; if a security product is specifically named in an installation log, follow that product’s documented temporary-update procedure.
How can I tell whether the internal disk is failing?
Warning signs include repeated errors on ordinary file copies, disappearing volumes, unusual mechanical sounds, and disk checks that report unreadable sectors. Back up immediately and use the computer as little as possible until the data is safe; a single failed update does not establish a disk failure.
