If Windows Update shows 0x8007045d (sometimes mistyped as “ox8007045d”), Windows reported ERROR_IO_DEVICE: an input/output operation could not be completed. The code is a general device-level signal, not proof that one particular disk, cable, USB port, or removable device has failed. Work through the repair in this order: protect your files, identify the exact failed update, run low-risk Windows checks, reset update components only when appropriate, check the storage path, repair Windows files, and then test hardware, drivers, and logs. If CHKDSK finds bad sectors or the same read/write error keeps returning, stop retrying updates and prioritize a complete backup and drive-health assessment.
What does Windows Update error 0x8007045d mean?
0x8007045d is Windows error ERROR_IO_DEVICE. Windows raised it because a requested read or write could not be completed through a device path. During an update, that path may include the internal SSD or hard disk, a storage controller, a file system, a USB device, update media, a driver, or the network location from which update files are obtained.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The code does not identify the failed component by itself. A damaged update cache, corrupted system files, an incompatible third-party driver, defective removable media, a bad cable or port, firmware trouble, unsupported device speed, or a deteriorating drive can all produce similar symptoms. Treat it as a clue to investigate the complete path rather than as a diagnosis of a specific disk.
Windows Update may also fail when prerequisites, architecture, access to update sources, proxy settings, or organizational policies prevent the requested files from being read or written. A computer managed through WSUS, Configuration Manager, or another policy can receive a different update or schedule than the public Windows Update service.

What should I do before trying a repair?
Back up irreplaceable files first
Copy documents, pictures, Desktop files, game saves, browser exports, and other important data to a USB flash drive or another verified destination. Microsoft Support places backup before its other solutions and specifically mentions copying files to a USB drive. If you suspect the internal drive, use a second destination as well and open a few copied files to verify that the backup is readable.
Do not begin with repeated update retries when the computer is producing read/write errors, freezing while opening files, or reporting that files were replaced from bad clusters. Every additional write can be risky on a device that is deteriorating.
Record the failure exactly
Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history and note the failed KB number, Windows edition and build, time of failure, and the complete message. “Undoing changes” or a generic rollback message is not enough to identify the cause. The KB number helps distinguish a single package problem from a broader servicing or storage failure.
Check prerequisites, architecture, and space
Before changing system folders, confirm that the failed package matches your Windows edition, build, and processor architecture. A package intended for a different architecture can fail even when the download itself is intact. Also verify that the update source is reachable and that no proxy, security gateway, WSUS approval, or Configuration Manager deployment rule is withholding the package.
Leave adequate free space on the system volume. Microsoft Support gives page guidance of 16 GB for 32-bit upgrades and 20 GB for 64-bit upgrades. Those figures are operational thresholds for the scenarios described on that page, not a guarantee that every update needs exactly that amount. If the system drive is nearly full, remove only clearly unnecessary files after your backup is verified; do not delete Windows servicing folders at random.
How do I run the safest first checks?
- Run the Windows Update troubleshooter. In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, choose Windows Update, and select Run. In Windows 10, use Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Windows Update. Apply any suggested correction and restart.
- Confirm a stable connection. Temporarily avoid an unreliable Wi-Fi link, captive portal, or proxy that blocks Microsoft update sources. If the PC is managed by an organization, ask whether WSUS, Configuration Manager, or policy controls the update.
- Check date and time. Go to Settings > Time & language > Date & time (or Settings > Time & Language in Windows 10), enable automatic time and time-zone settings, and select Sync now when available.
- Restart once. A pending reboot can leave servicing files locked. After restarting, try the same update a single time and record whether the code changes.
- Review third-party drivers. If the failure began after installing a storage, chipset, graphics, USB, or other device driver, use the device maker’s current driver or firmware package. Do not install a driver intended for a different Windows architecture or device model.
These checks are low risk and can correct timing, connectivity, or prerequisite problems without altering the update cache or disk structure.
How do I reset the Windows Update cache?
Reset the cache when Update history points to damaged or repeatedly incomplete update files, and only after your backup is complete. Renaming the folders lets Windows create clean replacements while preserving the old folders for possible inspection.

Standard SoftwareDistribution reset
- Open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin). Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Stop the update service with
net stop wuauserv. - Open File Explorer and go to
C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution. Rename the folder toSoftwareDistribution.old, or remove its contents if you have confirmed the backup and do not need the old cache. - Return to the elevated terminal and run
net start wuauserv. - Restart Windows, open Windows Update, and check for updates again. The service will create a new cache.
Stopping the service can fail if another servicing process is active. Restart, wait a few minutes, and try again rather than deleting files from a running cache.
Advanced reset suggested by Microsoft Q&A
A Microsoft Q&A response describes a broader community-suggested escalation. It is not a guaranteed Microsoft fix, so use it only after the standard reset and backup:
- In an elevated terminal, run
net stop wuauserv, net stop cryptSvc, andnet stop bits. - Rename
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributiontoSoftwareDistribution.old. - Rename
C:WindowsSystem32catroot2tocatroot2.old. - Start the services again with
net start wuauserv, net start cryptSvc, andnet start bits. - Run
netsh winsock reset, restart Windows, and test Windows Update.
If a service reports that it was not started, note the message and continue only when the commands complete as expected. Do not repeatedly rename folders while CHKDSK or another repair is reporting active disk errors.
Should I run CHKDSK for 0x8007045d?
Yes, a file-system check is appropriate when the error coincides with slow file access, corrupted files, freezes, or other I/O symptoms. It is not a substitute for a hardware diagnosis.
- Open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Run
chkdsk /f C:. - If Windows says the volume is in use, type
Yto schedule the check for the next restart, then reboot. - Allow the check to finish and record its result before trying Windows Update again.
Bad-sector findings, messages that files were replaced from bad clusters, repeated read/write failures, or the same 0x8007045d result after repair are data-protection warnings. Stop update retries, make a complete backup while the drive is still readable, and arrange drive-health diagnostics or data-recovery help. CHKDSK can repair logical file-system structures, but it cannot restore a failing SSD, hard disk, controller, cable, or USB device.
How do I repair corrupted Windows components?
Use DISM and SFC when logs or symptoms indicate Windows component-store or system-file corruption. Run them from an elevated terminal, allow each command to finish, and restart afterward.
- Run
Dism.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /Restorehealth. - When DISM completes, run
Sfc.exe /Scannow. - Restart Windows and retry the failed update once.
DISM repairs the Windows servicing component store and SFC checks protected system files against that store. Neither command can repair a bad physical disk, defective controller, damaged cable, failing USB device, or incorrect firmware. If either command reports that files cannot be read, return to backup and storage diagnostics instead of looping the commands.

What hardware, media, and driver checks can isolate the fault?
Removable media and USB paths
Disconnect nonessential USB storage, card readers, docks, and external drives. If the update failure occurs only while a particular device is attached, test a different port and cable, remove the suspect media, and retry. A defective device, unsupported transfer speed, or firmware problem can surface the same generic I/O code.
Internal storage and firmware
If CHKDSK reports bad sectors or ordinary file operations fail, use the storage manufacturer’s diagnostic and firmware guidance. Keep the backup in place before any firmware operation or replacement. A replacement drive may resolve the physical cause, but it does not recover files that were never copied.
Drivers
Obtain storage, chipset, USB, and other relevant drivers from the device manufacturer or PC maker. Verify the exact model and Windows architecture. If the issue started immediately after a driver change, use Device Manager’s rollback option when it is available, then restart and retest. Microsoft identifies incompatible third-party drivers as one class of update failure.
Where should I look for evidence when the error persists?
Review Windows Update logs around the failure time and inspect C:WindowsLogsCBSCBS.log. Look for entries that distinguish component corruption, access errors, sharing violations, missing paths, and network or proxy failures. Match the timestamp with the KB number from Update history.

Component-store references support DISM and SFC. Repeated read failures, bad-cluster messages, or errors that occur outside Windows Update point toward storage, media, controller, cable, or firmware diagnostics. An organization-managed machine may require its administrator to review WSUS or Configuration Manager logs and policy before local changes are useful.
Can I install the failed KB manually?
Manual installation can be a useful comparison only after you have recorded the exact KB and confirmed the correct Windows build and architecture. It does not bypass a failing drive, damaged component store, blocked source, or incompatible package. If the standalone installer produces the same I/O error, compare the result with ordinary file-copy tests and the CBS log instead of repeatedly launching the installer.
On a managed computer, local manual installation may conflict with approval, maintenance windows, or servicing policy. Ask the administrator before changing the deployment path. On an unmanaged computer, keep the original failure time and installer result together so that a technician can distinguish a package problem from a device-level failure.

Which repair path is safest for my symptoms?
| Evidence | First choice | Risk and limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Single failed update, no file-access symptoms | Troubleshooter, restart, network/date checks, then identify the KB | Low risk; does not diagnose a physical device |
| Repeated incomplete downloads or cache-related log entries | Stop Windows Update and rename or clear SoftwareDistribution | Software-only and reversible when renamed; requires the service to be stopped |
| Component-store or protected-file corruption in logs | DISM RestoreHealth followed by SFC Scannow | Repairs Windows files, not hardware |
| Bad sectors, corrupt files, or recurring read/write errors | Backup first, then CHKDSK and hardware diagnostics | Higher data risk on a failing disk; prioritize recovery over update retries |
| Failure tied to a USB device, cable, firmware, or new driver | Change port or cable, remove media, and install the correct manufacturer driver or firmware | Requires matching the exact device; unsupported firmware can worsen a fault |
| Managed PC, proxy, WSUS, or policy restrictions | Ask the administrator to verify source access, approval, and timing | Local cache changes may not affect policy-controlled servicing |
Use reversibility and data risk as the deciding factors. Cache renaming and Windows-file repair are software interventions; CHKDSK and hardware replacement can expose a failing device, so a verified backup comes first.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What if 0x8007045d still appears after all repairs?
Do not keep repeating the same cache reset or update attempt. Preserve the backup, photograph or save the exact error and CHKDSK output, and test whether ordinary files can be copied from the affected drive. Persistent I/O failures justify a manufacturer diagnostic, professional hardware inspection, or data-recovery service before replacing or formatting the drive.
If storage tests are clean, compare the failed KB with the Windows build and architecture recorded earlier, then have an administrator verify update-source access, proxy rules, WSUS approval, or Configuration Manager deployment. A clean local cache cannot overcome a blocked or unavailable update source.
When seeking help, provide the KB number, Windows build, whether the machine is managed, the commands already run, CHKDSK findings, and the relevant Windows Update and CBS log timestamps. That evidence is more useful than reporting only “Windows Update failed.”

Can 0x8007045d permanently damage my files?
The code itself does not damage files; it reports that an I/O operation failed. However, if the underlying drive or controller is deteriorating, interrupted reads and writes can leave files incomplete or corrupt, which is why copying important data before further repair is essential.
Will resetting SoftwareDistribution remove my installed games or personal data?
The folder contains Windows Update’s working cache, not your game libraries, documents, or personal folders. Renaming it makes Windows create a new cache, but keep the old folder until the update succeeds if you may need its logs.
Does a successful CHKDSK prove that my SSD or hard disk is healthy?
No. CHKDSK checks file-system consistency and can report logical repairs without measuring the device’s remaining endurance or electronics. A drive that passes it but continues producing I/O errors still needs manufacturer diagnostics and a current backup.

Why does the update work on another computer but not mine?
The other computer may use a different Windows build, architecture, driver set, storage device, or update-management policy. Compare the failed KB, build, and whether either machine is controlled by WSUS, Configuration Manager, or a proxy before assuming the package itself is defective.
Can I install the failed update manually?
Manual installation is useful only after you identify the exact KB and confirm that the machine can reliably read and write files. It will not bypass a failing drive, damaged component store, blocked update source, or incompatible architecture, so resolve those conditions first.
What does the “ox8007045d” spelling mean?
The canonical Windows form uses a zero: 0x8007045d. People often type the letter o after the prefix, but both spellings usually refer to the same ERROR_IO_DEVICE code when discussing this failure.
How much free space should I leave before trying the update?
Microsoft Support gives operational guidance of 16 GB for 32-bit upgrades and 20 GB for 64-bit upgrades. Treat those as page guidance for the stated upgrade scenarios, not as a universal requirement for every individual update.
Should I keep retrying if CHKDSK reports bad sectors?
No. Bad sectors, files replaced from bad clusters, or recurring read/write errors are warnings to prioritize a verified backup and drive-health or data-recovery help. Repeated update writes can add stress to an already unreliable device.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: 0x8007045d is a generic Windows I/O-device error, not automatic proof of a dead hard drive. Back up first, record the failed KB, run the troubleshooter and basic network and time checks, then choose a cache reset or DISM/SFC only when the evidence supports it. If CHKDSK reports bad sectors or ordinary file copies keep failing, stop update retries and investigate the storage hardware.
