Do not treat 0x800745D as a confirmed Windows diagnosis yet. Microsoft’s current recovery, update, DISM, SFC and CHKDSK documentation does not define that exact string. Which fix matches the event that produced the code?
The trigger determines the safest first action. This table keeps an update cache problem from being treated like a failing USB path, and prevents a destructive reinstall from being used for an unverified code.

How do I fix the error when it appears during Windows Update?
Use Microsoft’s least-disruptive sequence in order. Keep the exact new error text if a step fails; it may identify a different problem than the original ambiguous code.
1. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
On Windows 11, open the Get Help app and follow its Windows Update troubleshooting flow. You can also open Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Windows Update > Run. Apply any offered repair and restart when requested.
2. Check the basic prerequisites
- Connect the computer to AC power, especially a laptop.
- Confirm a working internet connection.
- Use an account with administrator access.
- Check that the system drive has sufficient free space.
- Set Settings > Time & language > Date & time to automatic time and automatic time zone, then press Sync now.
- Disconnect external storage, docks, printers and other hardware that the update does not require.
During an upgrade attempt, Microsoft also advises removing non-Microsoft antivirus when appropriate and keeping third-party drivers current. Do this only if your security policy allows it, and reinstall protection after the upgrade attempt.
3. Rebuild the Windows Update download cache
Open Windows Terminal or Command Prompt as administrator. Stop the update service, clear only the contents of the download cache, and start the service again:

4. Repair Windows components and protected files
Run the DISM and SFC sequence in the later section. DISM must run first because it repairs the component source that SFC uses. If Windows Update still fails, preserve the exact code and any Event Viewer entry before moving to more invasive recovery.
How do I use System Restore or WinRE safely?
If Windows reaches the desktop, open the normal recovery controls and inspect the proposed restore point and affected programs before confirming. If Windows will not start, enter the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore, or select the recovery action that matches the event.
Understand what each recovery choice changes

System Restore is the least destructive of these choices when a suitable point exists, but it can undo a driver or update that caused another device to stop working. Read the affected-program list and make a separate backup first. If BitLocker is enabled, Microsoft says the BitLocker recovery key is required for most WinRE recovery options; retrieve it before starting.

What if the error occurs while copying files, backing up or using USB media?
Treat this branch as a data-preservation problem, not as proof that 0x800745D is an I/O code. Identify the source, destination, USB port, cable, enclosure, memory card or optical disc involved.
- Copy irreplaceable files to a separate destination that you know can read and write reliably.
- Stop repeated writes to a drive that disconnects, reports unreadable sectors or produces unusual noises.

How do I run DISM and SFC in the correct order?
These commands address damaged Windows components and protected system files. They do not repair a failing USB cable or prove that a disk is healthy.
- Open Start, search for Windows Terminal or Command Prompt, select Run as administrator, and approve the prompt.
- Run DISM and wait for it to finish:

- Run System File Checker:

Use a repair source only when Windows Update cannot provide files
A compatible Windows installation source can be supplied with /Source and /LimitAccess:

chkdsk C: /rBecause /r can take substantially longer and reads the disk extensively, use it after important files are backed up. A successful CHKDSK run is not proof that hardware is healthy. Repeated unreadable sectors, disappearing devices, or unusual mechanical noises require hardware diagnosis or professional data recovery before more writes.
When should I recreate Windows installation media?
Recreate media only when the verified failure occurs in Windows Setup, while booting the installer, or while reading the installation USB or DVD. It is not a universal response to an unverified 0x800745D shown by Windows Update or System Restore.

- A blank DVD with at least 8 GB is a secondary option for a computer with a compatible burner.
- Match the installation language and check that the target PC meets the edition and hardware requirements.

Microsoft’s 2026 media requirements specify an 8 GB minimum blank USB and an 8 GB minimum blank DVD. The storage item only enables creation of recovery or installation media; it does not diagnose an unknown hexadecimal code.

- Preserve the exact code, full sentence, timestamp and operation that failed.
- Save Windows Update history, Event Viewer entries and the final DISM, SFC or CHKDSK messages.

- Do not keep reinstalling Windows or repeating disk writes while a drive is losing files.
