A plain 0x3 in Windows Task Scheduler means the action reported ERROR_PATH_NOT_FOUND: Windows could not find a specified path. Microsoft defines the message as “The system cannot find the path specified.” That result does not identify which path failed, so the reliable fix is to inspect the task action, its working directory, every path inside the script, and the account and environment used to run it.
Start by confirming that the value is exactly 0x3, not a longer status such as 0x00041301 or 0x00041303. Then verify each executable, script, argument, input, output and network location with the same account and launch conditions as the scheduled task. Task history and the application’s own logs are needed when the missing path is inside a script.

What does a 0x3 Last Run Result mean?
Windows system error code 3, shown in hexadecimal as 0x3, is ERROR_PATH_NOT_FOUND. The official definition is “The system cannot find the path specified.” See Microsoft’s Win32 system-error reference. In Task Scheduler, that interpretation tells you what kind of problem to investigate, but not whether the missing item was the program, a script, a file argument, a folder, a drive letter or a path used later by the script.
Task Scheduler monitors triggers and starts configured actions; it does not understand every path used by the application it launches. A task can therefore start successfully and still finish with 0x3 when the launched program cannot open one of its own files.

Do not confuse 0x3 with longer Task Scheduler status values
Read the complete hexadecimal value in the Last Run Result column. Microsoft documents several values that begin with 0x413, and they do not mean a missing path.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Why can a task return 0x3 when the command works manually?
An interactive test normally runs under your logged-in account, from the directory of your terminal or shortcut, with your profile variables, mapped drives and network credentials. A scheduled task may use another account, start in another directory and receive a different environment. Those differences can turn a relative or user-specific path into a missing path.
The action is not the same as the command you typed
The Program/script field, Add arguments field and Start in (optional) field together define how the task launches. A task that points to a batch file, for example, can fail before the batch file reaches its first command if the entered file name or parent folder is wrong. A task that launches an interpreter can instead fail because the interpreter path, script argument or script working directory is wrong.
Relative paths depend on the starting directory
A script that opens inputvideo.mp4 or writes to logsrun.txt is relying on a current directory. The current directory used by a scheduled action is not necessarily the folder containing the script. Guidance on scheduled jobs and environments recommends explicit paths and accounting for the user, environment and working-directory differences; see Sysax’s scheduling and environment guidance.
The action may return its own status
Not every program uses exit codes in the same way. An application can define or propagate a status value that happens to be 3, even when the Windows system-error definition is not the immediate cause. Treat the Windows meaning as the first hypothesis, then check the documentation and log output for the program that actually ran.

How do I fix a 0x3 Last Run Result step by step?
Work through these checks in order. Change one thing at a time, run the task again, and record the complete result and time so you can tell which change mattered.
1. Confirm the exact value and the last run
- Open Task Scheduler and select Task Scheduler Library in the left pane.
- Select the task and note Last Run Result, Last Run Time and Next Run Time.
- Make sure the value is exactly
0x3. Do not apply the missing-path procedure to a longer value such as0x00041301or0x00041303. - If the task has never run, correct its trigger or start conditions first; a missing-path diagnosis requires an actual action attempt.
2. Inspect every field in the action
- Right-click the task, choose Properties, and open the Actions tab.
- Select each action and choose Edit. Record the exact text in Program/script, Add arguments and Start in (optional).
- Check whether the program field contains a complete path to an existing executable, script host or batch file. If it contains only a file name, determine which directory Task Scheduler is expected to search.
- Check every argument for a misspelled folder, a removed file, an unbalanced quote or a variable that is unavailable to the scheduled account.
- If the task has multiple actions, inspect all of them. A first action can succeed while a later action returns the final
0x3.
Use the Browse button where available, or copy the path from File Explorer and paste it into the appropriate field. Keep executable paths and arguments separate; putting an entire command line into the program field can change how quoting is interpreted.
3. Verify the executable, script and immediate folders
Check the path on the computer where the task runs, not on a different workstation. Open File Explorer, paste the directory into the address bar, and confirm that the target exists. Verify each parent folder as well as the final file: a deleted or renamed parent directory produces the same missing-path class of error.
For a repeatable check, run a path test in a terminal using your actual path. These examples only demonstrate the test; replace the sample locations with the paths used by your task:
Recommended Free Tools
Test-Path -LiteralPath 'C:Jobsinput.csv'
Test-Path -LiteralPath 'C:Toolsprocess.exe'
A False result identifies a path that is absent from that machine or inaccessible in the current context. If the test succeeds interactively but the task still fails, continue with the account and environment checks rather than assuming the path is fixed.
4. Correct quoting and argument syntax
Paths containing spaces should be quoted in the argument field. Quote only the path value, and keep switches outside the closing quote. For example, an argument shaped like "C:Job Filesinput.csv" --mode nightly is different from placing the whole string in Program/script.

Look for smart quotation marks copied from a document, trailing characters, doubled folder names and a missing file extension. If a variable such as %USERPROFILE% or %TEMP% is used, verify that the scheduled account expands it to the location you expect. When in doubt, replace a variable with an absolute path for the test run.
5. Set an explicit working directory
Enter the directory that should be the process’s starting location in Start in (optional), without surrounding quotes unless the field’s UI requires them. The directory must already exist. This is especially important when the script refers to files with relative names.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf the program is a batch file or script, consider making its internal paths absolute as well. A working-directory setting helps the process start consistently, but it cannot correct a relative path that intentionally points somewhere else.
6. Audit paths inside the script or application
Open the script in an editor and inspect every file and folder reference, not just the path visible in the task action. Check input files, output folders, temporary locations, configuration files, imported modules and log destinations. A script can return 0x3 after launching correctly because one of these later paths is missing.
Add temporary diagnostics before the suspected operation. For a PowerShell script, logging the current location and testing a required file can narrow the failure:
$log = 'C:TaskLogspath-check.txt'
"Started: $(Get-Date)" | Out-File -FilePath $log -Append
"Location: $(Get-Location)" | Out-File -FilePath $log -Append
"Input exists: $(Test-Path -LiteralPath 'C:Jobsinput.csv')" | Out-File -FilePath $log -Append
For a batch file, a comparable temporary log can record the current directory and the result of an if exist check. Remove or reduce diagnostic logging after the failing operation is identified, and ensure the log folder itself exists before the script writes to it.

7. Check the account and access to local or network paths
Open the task’s General tab and identify the account selected under Security options. Test the required paths while signed in as that account, or use a controlled test task with the same account and settings. A path can exist for an administrator but be unavailable to a standard account.
Network locations require particular care. A drive letter mapped in your interactive session may not exist in a non-interactive scheduled session. Prefer a deliberately configured network path and credentials that the task account can use, and verify that both the share and its underlying folder permissions allow the required operation.
Also check whether the task is configured to run only when a user is logged on or whether it runs in the background. The launch mode changes which profile, environment variables and mapped resources are present.
8. Review task history and the application’s logs
- In Task Scheduler, select the task and open the History tab. If history is disabled, use the Enable All Tasks History command in the Task Scheduler actions pane, then reproduce the failure.
- Read the event sequence around the failed run: action started, action completed, returned code and any accompanying message.
- Open the application, script or transfer tool’s own log and look for the first file or directory operation that failed.
- Compare the timestamp in those logs with Last Run Time; this prevents you from diagnosing an older run.
A single Last Run Result is not a stack trace. In a Qlik Community case, changing a batch command produced 0x0, but the poster still could not establish the original cause. That example is a reminder to use history and application output instead of treating a changed code as proof of which path was wrong; see the reported Task Scheduler 0x3 case.

Use Run from Task Scheduler after saving the corrected action. Watch Last Run Result, the task history events and the application log. A successful 0x0 shows that the latest action reported success, but it does not prove that every future run will succeed if files, shares or accounts change.
If the task still returns 0x3, undo the last change or keep a copy of the current configuration, then isolate the action. Temporarily point a test task at a minimal script that logs its working directory and tests one required path. Add the original operations back one at a time until the failing path is identified.

How can I distinguish the likely cause?
Use the evidence from the action, account and logs rather than ranking one cause as universal. The same code can result from different layers of a scheduled job.
| Observation | Most useful next check | What it can reveal |
|---|---|---|
| The task fails immediately and the program field points to a file that is not present. | Verify the executable or script and every parent folder. | A stale, misspelled or machine-specific action path. |
| The task works from a terminal but fails when scheduled. | Compare the working directory, account, environment variables and mapped resources. | A context difference rather than a missing file on disk. |
| The task starts, then fails after processing begins. | Read the script or application log for its first file operation. | A missing input, output, configuration or temporary path inside the action. |
Changing the command changes the result to 0x0, but no log explains why. |
Reproduce with history enabled and add explicit path diagnostics. | A changed code without proof of the original failing operation. |
The value is a longer 0x413... status. |
Match the complete value against Task Scheduler’s constants. | A scheduler state such as running or not yet run, not plain error 3. |
What should I do after the task starts succeeding?
- Keep absolute paths for files that must be found regardless of the starting directory.
- Leave the intended working directory in Start in (optional) and document why it is required.
- Use an account with stable permissions for local and network resources, and avoid relying on a drive mapping that exists only in an interactive session.
- Retain a useful application log and a short record of the task’s program, arguments and working directory.
- Export the task configuration before major edits so you can restore a known-good action.
- After changing a script, run it once under the same account and launch conditions as the scheduled task, then confirm the result in both Task Scheduler history and the application log.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I export a Task Scheduler task before changing it?
Yes. In Task Scheduler, select the task and use the Export command in the actions pane to save its XML configuration. Keep that file with your change notes so you can recreate the previous action if a test introduces a new failure.
What if Task Scheduler history is unavailable or empty?
Enable task history from the Task Scheduler actions pane, then trigger the task again. You can also inspect the Task Scheduler operational log in Event Viewer under Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > TaskScheduler > Operational for events surrounding the run.
Should I replace a mapped drive letter with a network path?
A mapped drive can exist only in your logged-in session, so a background task may not see it. Test the resource with the task’s account and use a consistently reachable network path with permissions configured for that account.
Can a program return 3 for a reason unrelated to a missing Windows path?
Yes. Programs and scripts can define their own exit-code conventions or pass through a code from a child process. When the action and all paths look correct, consult that program’s documentation and log output before treating the number as Microsoft’s system error.
