For a DualSense that disconnects or will not pair, use PlayStation’s wired reconnection sequence first: turn on the PS5, connect the controller with a compatible USB cable, and press the PS button. If that fails, reset the controller, reconnect it by USB, and update the PS5 and controller software. A wired test can show whether the symptom changes when wireless communication is removed, but the official material does not establish a single cause or guaranteed cure for input lag.
The steps below separate pairing failures, repeated disconnections, and perceived lag so you can identify what is actually failing instead of treating every symptom as the same problem.

Identify which problem you are actually seeing
“My PS5 controller is broken” can describe several different symptoms. Record the behavior before changing settings, because the useful next step depends on whether the console cannot establish a connection, loses an existing connection, or responds slowly after an input is made.
The controller keeps disconnecting
The controller pairs successfully, then drops its connection during a game or while navigating menus. It may reconnect after pressing PS, or it may require a cable again. Note whether the drop happens only wirelessly or also while the cable is attached.

The controller will not pair
The PS5 does not recognize the controller after you press PS, or the controller was previously used with another PS5 and no longer connects to the console you are using. A DualSense pairs with one PS5 console at a time; moving it to another console requires pairing it with that console again.
The controller has input lag
Input lag is a delayed response between moving a stick or pressing a button and seeing the result. The delay might be in the controller connection, a particular game, or streamed play. The official support material does not identify one cause, publish a diagnostic setting that proves the cause, or promise that a reset or cable replacement will remove the delay.
| Observed symptom | Start with | Useful observation |
|---|---|---|
| Fails to connect at all | USB pairing sequence | Whether the PS5 recognizes it when the cable is attached |
| Connects, then drops wirelessly | USB reconnection followed by a wireless test | Whether the symptom returns only after the cable is removed |
| Feels delayed | Define where and when the delay occurs, then perform a wired isolation test | Whether the delay appears in every game and while connected by USB |
Prepare the correct cable and controller information
Use the cable supplied with the controller for the first attempt. If you need a replacement, it must support USB data as well as charging; a charging-only cable cannot perform the pairing and communication task described by PlayStation. Make sure the plugs are fully seated and check the cable and console port connection if the controller drops out or is not detected.

The regular DualSense and DualSense Edge share the basic USB pairing and reset process, but the documented communication-method setting quoted later is specific to DualSense Edge. Do not assume that an Edge-only menu exists on every DualSense model or every software version.
Also note whether the controller was recently paired to a different PS5, whether the problem affects one game or several, whether it occurs with a USB cable attached, and whether it began after a software or connection change. These observations do not prove a cause, but they make the next troubleshooting decision and any repair conversation more precise.

Reconnect a DualSense to the PS5 over USB
This is PlayStation’s standard pairing and reconnection method. It is the right first move for a controller that will not pair and for one that has started disconnecting.
- Turn on the PS5. The console must be running so it can receive the pairing request.
- Connect the controller to the PS5 with a compatible USB cable. Start with the cable supplied with the controller. A cable that only delivers power is not sufficient for this task.
- Press the PS button. The console should recognize the controller through the wired connection.
- Check whether you can navigate the PS5. If the controller is now recognized, leave the cable connected while you confirm that inputs are reliable.
- Test wireless use. Disconnect the cable and continue using the controller. If it remains connected, the original failure may have been an interrupted pairing state or a cable/connection issue; that observation alone does not establish a hardware diagnosis.
Each DualSense can be paired with only one PS5 console at a time. If it was last paired with another console, repeat the USB procedure with the PS5 you intend to use. Repeating the PS-button press without first making a wired connection will not substitute for this pairing step when the console has lost the pairing relationship.

Reset the controller when pairing or disconnections persist
A controller reset is separate from resetting the PS5. It clears the controller’s connection state; it does not reset the console or its games.
- Turn off the PS5. Do not leave the console running while you perform the reset procedure.
- Disconnect the controller from USB.
- Find the small reset button on the back of the controller. It sits inside a small hole. Use a pin or a similar thin tool and hold the button for at least five seconds.
- Reconnect the controller to the PS5 with the official USB cable.
- Press the PS button. This starts the pairing process again after the controller reset.
If the controller works after the reset, keep the cable attached long enough to confirm that the PS5 recognizes it, then remove the cable to check wireless stability. If it immediately returns to the same failure, move on to software updates rather than repeatedly pressing the reset button.
Update PS5 and DualSense software
Update the PS5 system software
PlayStation’s troubleshooting guidance says to update the PS5 system software to the latest version available when connection trouble continues. Use the console’s built-in system-software update control and allow the update to finish before testing the controller again. Do not interrupt the console while an update is being installed.

Check DualSense device software on the PS5
When you can operate the PS5 with another controller, or after the affected controller reconnects by USB, open Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) > DualSense Wireless Controller Device Software. This is the documented location for checking DualSense controller software on PS5.

PlayStation states that controller software updates are added when PS5 system software is updated. Therefore, update the console first if the controller-software option indicates that an update is available or if you have not updated the system recently. Reconnect the affected controller by USB before checking again if the console does not see it.
Use PlayStation Accessories on a PC when PS5 access is difficult
PlayStation also lists the PlayStation Accessories application as the PC route for updating the controller. This is an update path, not a replacement for the USB pairing sequence: after updating, connect the controller to the PS5 by USB and press PS to pair it with that console.
Use a wired test to isolate a wireless-only symptom
Connect the controller to the PS5 with a compatible data cable and use it for long enough to reproduce the problem. If disconnections stop while the cable is attached but return after you remove it, record that as a useful distinction: the symptom changes with the connection method. It does not, by itself, prove that a particular radio component, port, or environmental condition is defective.
For a DualSense Edge, PlayStation’s documented setting is Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) > Communication Method > Use USB Cable. Keep the Edge qualification attached to this path. The evidence available here does not establish that the same menu label or behavior applies universally to the regular DualSense, so do not present it as a general setting for every model.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
For a regular DualSense, a direct USB connection is still a useful practical comparison, but use the controller and console’s current options rather than assuming the Edge menu exists. If the controller remains stable only while wired, repeat the pairing, reset, and update procedures, check the cable and port connection, and prepare the observations for PlayStation support if the behavior persists.
What to do about perceived input lag
Define the delay before trying a fix
Ask four specific questions:
- Is the response delayed for every button and stick movement, or only for one control?
- Does the delay occur in every game or only one title?
- Does it also occur when the controller is connected by USB?
- Is the delay present during ordinary local play, or only during streamed play?
These questions classify the symptom; they are not proof of a particular cause. A delay limited to one game is a different troubleshooting lead from a delay that appears across the PS5 interface, while a delay that changes when the cable is attached is different from one that does not change at all.
Perform the connection comparison
- Use the controller wirelessly and note exactly where the delay appears.
- Connect it to the PS5 with a compatible USB data cable.
- Repeat the same menu or in-game action under comparable conditions.
- Record whether the delay disappears, becomes less noticeable, or remains unchanged.
A wired result can help you describe the symptom to support, but the official material reviewed does not state that a wired connection will cure input lag. It also does not establish that resetting the controller, replacing a cable, or changing a communication setting guarantees a lower latency.
Do not turn an observation into a diagnosis
If lag remains with USB attached, do not claim that the controller is conclusively faulty; the available support guidance does not provide that diagnosis. If lag changes only in one game, do not claim that the controller is conclusively healthy either. Capture the controller model, the affected games, connection method, and the point at which the delay occurs. That information is more useful than repeatedly resetting a controller without recording the result.
When the problem continues after reset and updates
Persistent connection trouble after the official pairing procedure, a controller reset, and available software updates is the point to use the PlayStation Repairs diagnostic tool. PlayStation directs users there when these steps do not resolve the issue.

Before starting a repair request, have the following details ready:
- Whether the controller is a DualSense or DualSense Edge.
- Whether it pairs at all over USB.
- Whether disconnections occur only after removing the cable.
- Whether the behavior occurs in the PS5 menus, in one game, or in multiple games.
- Whether the behavior changes during the wired comparison.
- Whether the PS5 and controller software were updated before the latest test.
A replacement controller is not the first step established by these support instructions. Consider replacement only after troubleshooting or a repair assessment indicates a hardware failure. Until then, keep the original controller, cable, and model information available so the repair process can distinguish a pairing state from a physical fault.
Common mistakes that prolong troubleshooting
Using a charging-only cable
A cable can supply power while failing to carry the data needed for pairing and communication. Use the supplied cable first or choose a replacement explicitly rated for USB data.
Resetting the console instead of the controller
The reset button is the small recessed button on the back of the controller. The documented procedure begins with the PS5 turned off and ends by reconnecting the controller with the official cable and pressing PS. It is not a console reset.
Assuming a wireless improvement proves the cause
If the controller works over USB but disconnects wirelessly, record that difference. Treat it as an observation that guides further troubleshooting, not as proof of a specific component failure.
Applying an Edge-only menu path to every model
The path ending in Communication Method > Use USB Cable is documented for DualSense Edge. Check the model before telling someone to look for that exact option.
Promising that a reset fixes lag
Resetting is an official step for pairing and connection trouble. The available official material does not promise it as an input-lag remedy, so describe a lag result accurately instead of guaranteeing an improvement.
A concise order of operations
For a controller that will not pair or keeps disconnecting, turn on the PS5, connect the controller with a compatible data cable, and press PS. If it is recognized, test it first while wired and then wirelessly. If it still fails or the problem returns, turn off the PS5, disconnect the controller, hold the rear reset button for at least five seconds, reconnect with the official cable, and press PS. Update the PS5 system software and check the DualSense device-software screen. For lag, document where the delay occurs and compare wired and wireless use without claiming that either reset or replacement is guaranteed to cure it. If connection trouble remains after these steps, use PlayStation Repairs.
