Check that an invalid code is actually a Steam key and re-enter it carefully; recover your account if a duplicate key may already be yours; and contact the seller if the key is faulty or restricted to another region. Steam cannot replace third-party retail keys or remove a region restriction.
First, confirm the key is meant for Steam
Check the product packaging or the message that delivered the code. It should say that the key is registered through Steam. A code for another platform or a publisher’s separate service will not activate as a Steam product.

To enter a Steam key in the Steam client, select + Add a Game in the lower-left corner, then choose Activate a Product on Steam…. If you are using a different launcher or service, follow the seller’s instructions for that platform instead. Steam Support’s activation instructions explain the process.
If Steam says “Invalid CD key” or “Invalid Product Code”
Before assuming the key is faulty, compare each character with the original packaging or delivery message. Steam notes that some characters are easy to confuse:

- 1 may be I or L.
- O may be Q or D.
- B may be 8.
- G may be 6.
If the code is definitely a Steam key, you have checked the characters, and Steam still rejects it, contact the retailer that sold it. Include the exact error and proof of purchase, and ask what remedy is available under the seller’s policy. Steam Support says it cannot provide replacement CD keys for retail purchases; refund and replacement options depend on the seller and applicable consumer rules. Steam Support: Invalid CD key error.
If Steam says “duplicate key” or that the key is already used
A duplicate error means the key has already been tied to a Steam account, so it cannot be registered again. If you may have activated it in the past, use Steam account recovery to locate the account that owns the game.

If you are sure you never redeemed the key, contact the retailer and request help. Steam Support states, “Steam Support cannot issue a replacement CD key.” The seller may offer a replacement or another remedy, but that depends on its policy and applicable consumer rules. If Steam says “Game not available in your territory”
This message means the copy is regionally restricted and the key is being registered outside its permitted region. Restrictions on third-party keys vary by publisher; there is no single rule that applies to every game. Steam Support says it cannot modify or remove region restrictions. Steam Support’s regional restrictions FAQ notes that country eligibility can change, so check its current guidance for the game.

If you live outside the permitted region, contact the seller to ask about a refund or other remedy. Steam cannot refund a purchase made through a third-party seller, and the outcome depends on that seller’s terms and applicable consumer rules.
Do not use a VPN, proxy, or other method to disguise your location and bypass the restriction. Steam warns that circumventing regional restrictions on restricted gifts violates its terms and may lead to account restrictions. If you still want the game, Steam points to buying it from the Steam Store or obtaining a copy sold in your country of residence. That means getting a different copy; it does not unlock or repair the original key.

If a Steam-issued key fails in another launcher or service
Some Steam games provide a separate key to register with a third-party client or service. That code is not a retail key to activate on Steam. If the third-party system reports it as invalid or already used, contact the game’s developer or publisher. Steam says it cannot access those external registration systems. If the game activated before but disappeared
A key that was successfully activated and later revoked is different from one that never activated. Steam says a publisher may revoke a key, for example, if it was intended for temporary activation or was determined to have been obtained fraudulently. If you bought the key from a third party, ask the seller about a refund; Steam cannot refund purchases made outside Steam. Steam Support: Revoked CD keys.
