How to Fix a Windows 10 Update That Won’t Download

If a Windows 10 update will not download, start with the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter, restart the computer, and select Check for updates again. If the download is incomplete or corrupted, stopping Windows Update and clearing C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution usually addresses that specific failure. Error codes then determine whether you should repair system files, correct a disabled service, update a driver, or recover storage.

There is an important 2026 qualification: Microsoft states, “Support for Windows 10 has ended on October 14, 2025.” Normal free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes are no longer provided after that date. Your PC can continue to run, but an update that is unavailable because the device is outside normal Windows 10 servicing cannot be repaired with cache-clearing steps.

Is Windows 10 still receiving the update you are trying to download?

First identify whether Windows Update is failing or whether the update is simply no longer offered to your installation. Microsoft’s support statement applies to Windows 10 generally: after October 14, 2025, free software updates through Windows Update, technical assistance, and security fixes ended. A computer can remain usable while receiving no new normal updates.

If Windows Update shows a specific error, a download percentage, or a failed installation, use the repair sequence below. If it reports that the device is up to date but you expected a post-support update, the absence may be a servicing-policy issue rather than damaged files. Devices enrolled in an organization’s deployment group, managed through WSUS, or on a different branch can also be offered an older release intentionally.

What should you check before repairing Windows Update?

Do these low-risk checks before changing services or deleting cached files. They prevent an avoidable interruption from being mistaken for a Windows component failure.

  • Back up personal files. Copy documents, saved games, photos, and other irreplaceable data to another disk or a cloud location before manual repair. A USB flash drive is useful for this backup; it is not itself a cure for Windows Update.
  • Use a stable connection. Prefer a reliable wired or Wi-Fi connection, disconnect from a metered or captive-portal network, and avoid switching networks while the download is running.
  • Keep the PC powered. Connect a laptop to its charger. Do not close the lid or force a shutdown while Windows is applying an update.
  • Check free space. Microsoft’s 2026 guidance lists 16 GB free for a 32-bit upgrade and 20 GB for a 64-bit upgrade. Those figures are upgrade-space guidelines, not a universal minimum for every cumulative Windows 10 update. Leave additional working room when possible.
  • Record the exact message and code. A screenshot or written code makes it possible to choose the right branch instead of repeating unrelated fixes.

Which Windows Update fix should you try first?

Use the least invasive option that matches the symptom. The table shows the trade-off between effort, skill, and reversibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Fix Best fit Skill and access Invasiveness and reversibility
Windows Update troubleshooter Unknown cause, ordinary download failure Settings interface; administrator approval may be requested Lowest; automated checks can be rerun
Restart and check again Temporary service or connection interruption Basic desktop use Very low; fully reversible
SoftwareDistribution reset Stuck, incomplete, or corrupted download Services console and File Explorer; administrator rights Moderate; downloaded update cache is discarded, not personal files
SFC system-file check Corruption-related errors Elevated Command Prompt Moderate; repairs protected files, but can take time
Driver or clean-boot work Driver-related or software-conflict errors Advanced troubleshooting Higher; preserve installers and activation details before uninstalling software
Servicing Stack Update or Update Catalog Advanced servicing or missing-update cases Manual package selection and version matching Higher; an incorrect package may not apply

How do I run the Windows Update troubleshooter?

On Windows 10, Microsoft’s built-in troubleshooter is the recommended first repair because it checks common update settings without requiring you to delete files manually.

  1. Open Start, then select Settings.
  2. Choose Update & Security.
  3. Select Troubleshoot in the left pane.
  4. Open Additional troubleshooters.
  5. Select Windows Update, then choose Run the troubleshooter.
  6. Allow the checks and suggested corrections to finish. Apply a correction when Windows offers one.
  7. Restart the PC even if the troubleshooter says it completed successfully.
  8. After signing in, return to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates.

If the same code returns, note it and continue to the matching branch below. Running the troubleshooter repeatedly without recording the code rarely adds useful information.

How do I clear the Windows Update cache safely?

A damaged or incomplete download is stored in the Windows Update cache. Stopping the service before clearing the cache prevents files from being held open and lets Windows rebuild a clean download area.

  1. Save your work and sign in with an account that has administrator rights.
  2. Press Windows key + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  3. In the Services window, locate Windows Update.
  4. Right-click it and choose Stop. Leave the Services window open.
  5. Open File Explorer and browse to C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution.
  6. Delete the contents of that folder. Do not delete the SoftwareDistribution folder itself. If Windows says a file is in use, confirm that Windows Update is stopped and try again.
  7. Return to Services, right-click Windows Update, and choose Start.
  8. Restart Windows.
  9. Open Windows Update and select Check for updates.

This removes downloaded update data, not personal files. Windows will recreate the cache as it checks and downloads again. The first check after a reset can take longer because the download must be rebuilt.

What does each Windows Update error code mean?

Error codes narrow the likely cause, but they are not interchangeable. Use the code as a branch rather than applying every fix at once.

Code Likely cause identified by Microsoft guidance Most appropriate next action
0x8007000d Damaged update files or cache Run the troubleshooter, then perform the SoftwareDistribution reset and check again.
0x800705b4 Timeout or interruption Confirm stable internet and power, restart, run the troubleshooter, and retry. If the download remains damaged, reset the cache.
0x80240034 Incomplete update or connection issue Check the connection, restart, and clear the update cache if the same download repeatedly stops.
0x800f0922 Low space or component problem Free storage, disconnect unnecessary peripherals, and use the servicing-stack or Update Catalog path if ordinary repair fails.
0x80070057 or 0x80080005 Corruption or configuration problem Run sfc /scannow from an elevated Command Prompt after the troubleshooter and cache reset.
0xC1900101 Incompatible driver Update or remove the implicated network or display driver, then retry. A clean boot can isolate conflicting software.
0x80248014 Update database or service problem Restart Windows Update, reset its cache, and check whether the device is managed by WSUS or another deployment system.
0x80070005 Access or permissions problem Use an administrator account, run the troubleshooter, and avoid changing permissions randomly; escalate to servicing repair if it persists.
0x80070422 Windows Update service is disabled Set the Windows Update service startup type to Automatic, start the service, restart Windows, and check again.

A code is evidence about the failing stage, not proof that one component is permanently broken. If a code changes after a repair, use the new code to choose the next branch.

How do I repair corrupted Windows system files?

For corruption-related errors, run System File Checker after closing other applications. It checks protected Windows files and repairs them when possible.

  1. Open Start and type Command Prompt.
  2. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  3. Enter sfc /scannow and press Enter.
  4. Let the scan reach 100 percent. Do not close the window while it is running.
  5. Restart the PC when it finishes, then select Check for updates.

If SFC reports that it could not complete or could not repair all files, keep the result and the original error code. Do not repeatedly run it as a substitute for identifying a driver, service, storage, or management issue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I fix a disabled Windows Update service?

Error 0x80070422 commonly indicates that the Windows Update service is disabled. The correction is made in the Services console, not by deleting random registry entries.

  1. Press Windows key + R, enter services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Find Windows Update and double-click it.
  3. Set Startup type to Automatic.
  4. Select Start if the service is stopped, then choose Apply and OK.
  5. Restart the computer and run Check for updates.

If the setting changes back, another management policy or security product may be controlling the service. On a work or school PC, contact the administrator before overriding that policy.

How do I handle a driver-related update failure?

0xC1900101 points to an incompatible driver, often during an upgrade rather than a small cumulative update. Focus on the device named in the failure details, with network and display drivers being common areas to examine.

  1. Disconnect nonessential USB devices, external storage, docks, and other peripherals.
  2. Undock a laptop before retrying an upgrade.
  3. In Device Manager, identify the network or display device associated with the error and install a current driver from the device manufacturer, or remove the recently added driver if the failure began immediately afterward.
  4. Restart Windows and retry the update.
  5. If the update succeeds in a clean-boot environment, re-enable startup items and services in groups to identify the conflict.

Before uninstalling any non-Microsoft antivirus or obsolete utility that may block an upgrade, preserve its installer, license or activation information, and configuration details. Removing software is a diagnostic step, not a guarantee that the update will install.

What should I do when the update offer is missing or older than expected?

Windows Update offers depend on more than the files stored on your PC. Microsoft identifies the operating-system build, servicing branch, locale, architecture, and management configuration as factors. A device managed by WSUS or a deployment group may intentionally receive an older update.

Check the servicing stack

Microsoft Learn advises installing the most recent matching Servicing Stack Update when servicing itself is the blocker. The package must match your Windows 10 edition and architecture. Installing an unrelated package is not a safe shortcut.

Use the Microsoft Update Catalog as an advanced fallback

Find the exact update in the Microsoft Update Catalog and compare its product, architecture, and applicability with your system. Check the correct Windows 10 update history first so you do not install a superseded or mismatched package. Manual catalog installation is most useful when Windows Update cannot retrieve a known applicable package; it does not bypass the end of normal free Windows 10 support.

Check management and edition details

On an organization-managed PC, ask the administrator whether WSUS, a deployment ring, or a policy is intentionally delaying the update. Home troubleshooting steps cannot override a deployment decision, and changing policy settings without approval can create a compliance problem.

Why is Windows Update stuck at 0 percent?

Zero percent can indicate that Windows is still establishing the connection, checking applicability, or waiting for the update service. Verify the connection, power, free space, and service status before assuming the download is corrupt.

  1. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter.
  2. Restart the PC and select Check for updates again.
  3. Confirm that Windows Update is running and set to Automatic.
  4. If the same update returns to zero after an interruption, clear C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution using the stop-and-start procedure.
  5. Use the displayed error code to continue with the SFC, driver, storage, or servicing-stack branch.

Why is Windows Update stuck at 100 percent?

One hundred percent can describe a completed download while Windows is still verifying or preparing installation. Avoid forcing a shutdown during an active installation. If Windows returns to the desktop and repeatedly shows the same failed update, restart once, record the code, and apply the matching repair rather than deleting additional system folders.

If the failure occurs during a feature upgrade, remove nonessential peripherals, check the upgrade-space guideline, and investigate driver conflicts. If the device is beyond normal Windows 10 support, a missing newer release may be policy-related rather than a stalled 100-percent download.

Can a USB flash drive fix Windows Update?

No. A USB flash drive can provide a separate place to back up personal files or, when an upgrade is constrained by local storage, hold files temporarily. It does not repair the Windows Update service, rebuild the SoftwareDistribution cache, or correct a driver or servicing error. Keep the backup until the update and restart have completed successfully.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can I tell whether the repair worked?

A successful repair has observable signs: Windows Update completes its check without returning the original error, the update moves from download to installation, and the requested restart finishes without rolling back. After signing in, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, select Check for updates, and confirm that the same update is no longer offered as failed.

  • Keep the error code and any SFC result until the next successful restart.
  • Do not run multiple cache-clearing tools at the same time; one controlled reset makes the result easier to interpret.
  • If the device is managed, verify the expected update date with the administrator.
  • If Windows 10 is simply outside normal free servicing, stop repeating repairs and evaluate the supported operating-system path for that PC.

As an optional shortcut after trying the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can look for more than 100 common Windows issues, including broken system elements, invalid redirects, shared DLL problems, settings that contribute to CPU, RAM, or disk load, temporary and cache files, and some vulnerability indicators. It includes a real-time boost, file shredder, and app-crash log, runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, and offers a free trial by category for at least two days before a subscription; it complements an antivirus rather than replacing one, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.

Frequently asked questions

Will reinstalling Windows 10 restore updates after October 14, 2025?

Reinstalling the operating system does not restore Microsoft’s ended normal free-support program. It can repair a damaged installation, but it will not make post-support Windows 10 updates available when the limitation is servicing policy rather than local corruption.

Does deleting SoftwareDistribution delete my documents or installed games?

No. The procedure removes Windows Update’s downloaded and temporary data in that cache directory. Personal files and installed applications are stored elsewhere, but you should still make the recommended backup before any manual repair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does the same update install on one Windows 10 PC but not another?

Offers can differ by build, branch, locale, architecture, hardware drivers, and management configuration. WSUS or a deployment group may also stage an older update for one device while another receives a different offer.

Should I keep retrying after the error code changes?

A changed code means Windows reached a different failure stage. Record the new code and switch to its branch; repeating the original fix without considering the new cause can discard useful diagnostic information.

Is a paid Windows 10 update offer the same as a normal Windows Update failure?

Not necessarily. The end of normal free support means availability can be governed by a separate servicing arrangement, while a failed download with a specific code is a local troubleshooting problem. Confirm the program and eligibility for your edition before treating it as a cache or service fault.
