The “Active Directory Domain Services is currently unavailable” message usually indicates a printer-discovery, Print Spooler, driver, USB, or network problem—not that a home computer is missing an Active Directory server. Start by testing a page, restarting Print Spooler, and clearing any corrupted queue files. If that does not help, remove duplicate printer installations, install the current driver for the exact model, and verify the connection. Registry-permission changes belong at the end of the process, after the reversible repairs have failed.
The same error can appear in Word or Excel even when Windows itself can print. A test page separates an application-registration problem from a system-wide printer failure, so perform that check before changing settings.

In this printer context, Windows or an Office application cannot discover or connect to the selected printer. The wording is misleading: it does not, by itself, mean that your PC needs the Active Directory Domain Services server role, a domain controller, or a change to a home network.
Microsoft describes the Print Spooler as “a file that manages the printing process.” The service holds print jobs, passes them to the driver, and exposes installed printers to applications. If it is stopped or its queue contains damaged files, an application may report that the printer is unavailable even though the printer is powered on.

Driver conflicts, a damaged printer installation, a disconnected USB cable, an unreachable Wi-Fi printer, or a shared-printer connection are more common explanations on a normal workstation. Treat the message as a printer troubleshooting symptom first.
How can I tell whether the failure is in Windows or only in Word?
Print a test page from Windows before changing drivers or the registry. If the test page prints, Windows can reach the printer and the remaining fault is likely the application’s printer registration or its view of the installed printer. If every application fails, continue with the service, queue, driver, and connection checks below.

- In Windows 7 or Windows 8, open Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
- In Windows 10, open Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the installed printer and choose the test-page command shown by that version of Windows.
- Record what happens: a successful page, an empty printer list, a queue that will not clear, or an error from the printer itself.
A Windows 8 Microsoft Q&A case shows that the message can appear while an application displays no printer at all. That symptom points to printer registration or discovery rather than an Active Directory installation problem.
Which Windows 7, 8, and 10 paths should I use?
The underlying fixes are the same, but printer management moved between Control Panel and Settings. Use the path that matches the operating system instead of trying to add an AD DS role.
| Windows version | Printer management path | Troubleshooting path | Support qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows 7 | Control Panel > Devices and Printers | Printer troubleshooter in Control Panel | Legacy operating system; use a driver that explicitly supports the installed edition. |
| Windows 8 | Control Panel > Devices and Printers | Printer troubleshooter in Control Panel | Legacy operating system; older driver packages may be required for the exact model. |
| Windows 10 | Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners | Get Help printer troubleshooter where available | Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. |
Windows 10’s end-of-support date does not turn off its existing print stack. It does mean that security fixes and future driver compatibility should not be assumed, so identify the exact Windows edition and printer model before downloading software.
How do I restart the Print Spooler?
Restarting the service is the safest first repair because it refreshes the component that manages the queue without removing the printer or its driver.

- Press Windows + R.
- Type
services.mscand press Enter. - Find Print Spooler in the service list.
- Right-click it and choose Restart. If the service is stopped, choose Start instead.
- Open Properties for Print Spooler and set Startup type to Automatic.
- Close the Services window and retry the print or printer-add operation.
If the service starts and remains running, repeat the Windows test-page check. If it immediately stops, or if jobs remain frozen, clear the queue before attempting another print.
How do I clear a stuck or corrupted print queue?
Old or damaged spool files can prevent new jobs from appearing and can make a printer look unavailable. Clearing the queue removes those temporary job files; it does not require installing Active Directory.
- Open
services.mscwith Windows + R. - Right-click Print Spooler and choose Stop.
- Open the folder
%WINDIR%system32spoolPRINTERS. If Windows requests permission, approve the administrator prompt. - Delete the files inside the PRINTERS folder. Leave the folder itself in place.
- Return to Services, start Print Spooler, and confirm Startup type is Automatic.
- Print a Windows test page before sending another document from Word or Excel.
Stop the service before deleting files; otherwise a job can remain locked or be recreated while you are cleaning the folder. If the queue fills again immediately, the next suspect is a conflicting or damaged driver rather than the queue files themselves.
How do I repair the printer installation and driver?
A printer can be present in Windows but still unusable when duplicate registrations or an outdated driver package conflicts with the spooler. Remove stale entries, then install the current driver for the exact printer model from its manufacturer.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Remove duplicates and unused printers
- Open Devices and Printers in Windows 7 or 8, or Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners in Windows 10.
- Identify duplicate, offline, or unused entries for the same physical printer.
- Remove the entries you no longer use, keeping the one that matches the actual connection only if it is known to be correct.
- Restart Print Spooler after the removal if the old queue was still visible.
Install the model-specific package
- Read the model name from the printer’s label or its control panel.
- Download the current driver package offered for that model and your Windows version from the printer manufacturer’s website.
- Run the installer with the printer disconnected if its instructions request that sequence; reconnect it only when prompted.
- Add the printer again through the Windows printer page and print a test page.
Do not substitute a driver for a similar-looking model. Windows 7 and Windows 8 may require an older package that explicitly supports those systems, while Windows 10 may offer a newer package. Microsoft identifies conflicting or outdated drivers as common causes of Print Spooler and printing failures.
Run the version-appropriate troubleshooter
- Windows 7 and Windows 8: open Control Panel > Devices and Printers, right-click the printer, and run the printer troubleshooting option.
- Windows 10: open Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners and use the Get Help printer troubleshooter where it is offered.
Run the troubleshooter after the printer has been reinstalled, not while several duplicate entries are still present. That gives it one queue and one driver to inspect.

How do I check a local USB printer?
A local printer cannot be discovered if it has no power or if the USB link is intermittent. Check the physical path before repeatedly reinstalling software.
- Turn the printer off, wait a few seconds, and turn it on again.
- Reseat the USB cable at both the computer and printer ends.
- Remove extra hubs or adapters temporarily so the printer is connected directly to the computer.
- Wait for Windows to detect the device, then open the printer page and try a test page.
- If the cable is visibly damaged or the connection drops, replace it with a compatible USB-A-to-USB-B printer cable, then add the printer again.
Use a replacement cable only when the cable or connector is suspect; changing it will not repair a stopped spooler or an incompatible driver.
How do I check a Wi-Fi or shared printer?
For a network printer, the computer must be able to reach the printer before a driver reinstall can succeed. A shared printer also depends on the host computer and its shared queue remaining available.
- Confirm the printer is powered on and connected to the same network as the computer when it is a Wi-Fi printer.
- Check the printer’s own status screen for a disconnected wireless state or an address change.
- For a shared printer, confirm the host computer is on and still sharing the printer.
- Remove an old or unreachable printer entry and add the printer again only after it is reachable.
- Print a Windows test page, then test from the application that originally displayed the error.
If the printer is reachable from one computer but not another, focus on the affected computer’s installation and driver. If no computer can reach it, solve the printer’s network connection before changing Windows permissions.
Why can Word or Excel report the error when Windows can print?
When a Windows test page succeeds but Word or Excel cannot see the printer, the failure is at the application or printer-registration layer. The message does not prove that the Print Spooler is stopped.
- Close the affected Office application after the Windows test page completes.
- Verify that the intended printer appears in the Windows printer list and is not a duplicate or stale entry.
- Remove the stale entry and add the working printer again if the application was pointing to an old registration.
- Reopen the application and select the reinstalled printer from its print dialog.
If every application fails, return to the spooler, queue, driver, and connection sections instead of changing Office settings. If only one application fails after the printer has been re-added, the problem is confined to that application’s printer registration and should be handled there.

When should I change registry permissions?
Registry-permission edits are a secondary workaround for a damaged current-user printer registration. Use them only after restarting the spooler, clearing its queue, repairing the driver, and checking the connection.
Back up before editing
Create a registry backup before changing permissions. A permission mistake can affect the user’s printer registrations and other Windows settings, so do not edit unrelated keys or change machine-wide permissions to solve a single-user problem.
Keys described for the affected user
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionDevicesHKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionPrinterPortsHKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionWindows
In Registry Editor, check the permissions on the relevant current-user key and grant the affected user control when the permissions are demonstrably damaged. Change only the user-level entries associated with the printer, close Registry Editor, restart Windows, and test again. If you cannot identify the damaged entry confidently, stop at the driver and connection repairs or ask an administrator for help.

Use the failure layer and printer type to choose the least risky repair first. Restarts and queue cleanup are reversible; registry changes are not the starting point.

| Observed symptom | Likely layer | First action | Printer types most affected |
|---|---|---|---|
| Every application fails and jobs remain queued | Service or queue | Restart Print Spooler, then clear the PRINTERS files if needed | Local USB, Wi-Fi, and shared |
| Printer appears twice or an old offline entry is selected | Installation or driver | Remove duplicates and install the exact model’s current driver | Any type |
| Windows test page fails after cable movement | USB connection | Power-cycle, reseat, or replace the suspect USB cable | Local USB |
| Printer is not reachable on the network | Network connection | Confirm power, same network, and reachability before re-adding | Wi-Fi or shared |
| Windows test page works but Word cannot see the printer | Application or registration | Re-add the working printer and select it again in the application | Any type |
| All normal repairs work for other users but one user still fails | Current-user permissions | Back up the registry and inspect the three current-user printer keys | Any type |
What should I do if the error returns after these repairs?
Use the result of the last successful test to narrow the next step instead of repeating every procedure.
- If the spooler stops again immediately, remove the printer’s old driver package and reinstall the model-specific package before adding another queue.
- If the queue is clean but the printer is unreachable, resolve the USB or network path first; a new queue cannot communicate through a failed connection.
- If Windows prints but one application fails, keep the working Windows installation and repair that application’s printer registration rather than changing service permissions.
- If only one Windows user is affected after a shared printer and driver check, inspect that user’s current-user registry permissions with a backup in place.
Do not install Active Directory Domain Services as a response to this printer message. On a normal workstation, that role addresses directory services, not the local print queue or printer discovery path.

What changed for Windows 10 after October 14, 2025?
Microsoft lists October 14, 2025 as the end of Windows 10 support. The printer procedures still apply to an installed Windows 10 system, but the operating system no longer receives ordinary support updates. Before replacing a driver, confirm that the manufacturer still provides a package for the exact Windows 10 edition and printer model.
Windows 7 and Windows 8 likewise rely on legacy Control Panel workflows and may have fewer compatible driver packages. Keeping the printer model, Windows edition, and connection type together when searching for a driver avoids installing software intended for a different system.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I remove the printer from Windows without deleting the driver first?
Yes. Remove duplicate or unused printer entries first, then install the exact model’s current driver if the error remains. Keeping several old queues can make the spooler load the wrong registration even when the physical printer is working.
Will clearing the PRINTERS folder uninstall my printer?
No. The queue procedure deletes files inside the folder while leaving the folder itself in place. The installed printer and its driver are handled separately through Devices and Printers or Printers & scanners.
Is a USB-A-to-USB-B cable compatible with every printer?
Only use that cable when the computer has a USB-A port and the printer has the matching USB-B printer port. Check both connectors before buying; a cable cannot fix a driver or Print Spooler failure.
Does the message mean my computer has joined the wrong domain?
Not in the printer scenario covered here. The wording is commonly produced when Windows or an application cannot discover the printer, so check the spooler, queue, driver, and connection before investigating domains.
