The quickest fix is to separate terminal email from EA logic. In MetaTrader 4 or MetaTrader 5, first run Tools > Options > Email > Test. If that fails, correct the SMTP settings. If it succeeds, verify that the EA reaches SendMail(), logs failures, is running on the intended live chart, and is not being tested in Strategy Tester.
Fix EA email problems in this order: test the terminal’s own email function, correct the SMTP settings if that test fails, then confirm that the Expert Advisor actually reaches SendMail(). Finally, check the live terminal—not the Strategy Tester—along with the Experts and Journal logs.

“EA” here means a MetaTrader Expert Advisor, and the steps apply to both MetaTrader 4 (MT4) and MetaTrader 5 (MT5). A configured mailbox does not automatically make an EA send messages. The EA must execute an email call, the relevant event or signal must occur, and the terminal must be running and connected.
1. Test MetaTrader before debugging the EA
This first test separates an SMTP configuration problem from an EA or code-path problem.

- Open MetaTrader.
- Go to Tools > Options > Email.
- Enable email notifications.
- Enter the SMTP server and port supplied by your email provider.
- Enter the SMTP login and password, if required.
- Enter a valid From address and To address.
- Click Test.
If the test message arrives, the terminal can at least queue an email using those settings. Move on to the EA checks below. If the test fails, do not start by editing the EA: correct the terminal’s mail configuration first, restart MetaTrader, and test again.
2. Fix the SMTP settings when the Email-tab test fails
Recheck each value rather than changing ports or providers at random:
- SMTP server: use the current outgoing-mail hostname from your provider, not the incoming POP or IMAP server.
- Port: enter the port required by that provider and its encryption or authentication method.
- Login and password: verify the username format and whether the account requires an app password or another provider-specific credential.
- From address: MetaTrader’s documentation says this address should belong to the same mail server used for SMTP.
- To address: use one valid recipient address. MetaTrader’s documented fields allow only one address in the From field and one in the To field.
- Email enabled: confirm that the email option is checked in the exact terminal instance you are using.
SMTP requirements vary by provider and account type, so there is no universal “best” port or consumer email service that fixes every MetaTrader installation. Use the provider’s current SMTP instructions. After correcting the fields, restart MetaTrader and run Tools > Options > Email > Test again.
3. If the terminal test works, verify that the EA calls SendMail()
A successful terminal test proves only that MetaTrader’s configured email path can accept a test request. It does not prove that the EA contains an email instruction or that the instruction is reached.
For an EA to send an email, its code—or another explicitly configured platform feature—must request one with the MQL4 or MQL5 SendMail() function. The signal condition must also become true. For example, an EA may be configured to send an alert only when a trade opens, a price crosses a level, or a particular error occurs. If that event never happens, SendMail() is never called.
Check the EA source for a call resembling:
SendMail("EA alert", "The trading condition was triggered");
Also check whether the call is hidden behind conditions such as these:

if (signal_is_true)
{
SendMail("Signal", "A signal was detected");
}
A common false diagnosis is to test the terminal successfully and then wait for an email from an EA whose signal has not fired. To isolate that possibility, temporarily add a controlled diagnostic trigger or use a known test condition in a live demo environment. Do not alter a production EA or place live trades merely to generate an email.
4. Log the result of SendMail()
If you own the source code, make the EA report whether the email request was accepted into MetaTrader’s send queue. In MQL5, SendMail(subject, text) returns true only when the message is placed in the terminal’s send queue. A return value of false means the request was not queued, so the EA should print the error immediately.
A safe diagnostic pattern is:
ResetLastError();
if (!SendMail("EA test", "Testing MetaTrader email"))
Print("SendMail failed: ", GetLastError());
else
Print("SendMail queued");
The same troubleshooting principle applies to MT4: reset the last error, record the Boolean result, and print GetLastError() immediately when the call fails. Logging matters because an EA that silently ignores a failed return value can look as though it never attempted to send.
Important: “SendMail queued” is not the same as “the message reached the inbox.” After MetaTrader queues the message, delivery can still be affected by the SMTP provider, spam filtering, recipient-side rules, or a rejected sender identity. Diagnose those separately from a failed SendMail() call.
5. Check Experts and Journal immediately after triggering the alert
In MT4, the Experts tab records EA activity, including messages printed by the EA. The Journal tab records broader terminal activity. MT5 also provides terminal logs and EA activity information through its toolbox and journal views.

- an EA startup or initialization message;
- the message showing that the signal condition was detected;
SendMail queuedor equivalent success output;- the printed error number after a failed call;
- messages showing that automated trading is disabled;
- connection, authorization, or account errors;
- evidence that a different chart, symbol, timeframe, or EA instance is running.
MT4’s historical EA logs are stored in the platform’s MQL4/LOGS directory. If the relevant event happened earlier, use those files instead of relying only on the currently visible tab.
6. Confirm that the EA is attached to the intended live chart
An EA can be installed correctly but attached to the wrong chart, symbol, timeframe, account, or terminal instance. In MT4, an attached EA appears on the chart and normally processes new ticks. Check that:
- the expected EA name is visible on the intended chart;
- the chart is receiving new prices;
- the EA’s individual settings allow its operation;
- the terminal-wide Auto Trading setting is enabled where required;
- the EA is not showing an error or disabled state;
- the chart’s inputs do not disable email alerts or restrict them to a different event.
Terminal-wide automated trading and an individual EA’s settings are separate controls. Enabling one does not necessarily override the other. If the EA is not running, its event handler will not reach the mail call.

7. Do not use the Strategy Tester to prove email delivery
A missing email during a backtest is expected and does not prove that SMTP is broken. MetaQuotes documents that SendMail() is not executed in the MT5 Strategy Tester. MT4 documentation likewise lists SendMail() among functions for interaction with the outside world that are not executed during testing.
Therefore:
- a successful backtest does not prove live email delivery;
- a missing backtest email does not prove that the terminal’s SMTP settings are wrong;
- email must be tested in a running terminal environment, preferably on a demo account when testing an unfamiliar EA.
You can use the Strategy Tester to check whether the trading logic reaches a theoretical signal, but you must separately test the email path on a live-running terminal.
8. Check the exact computer or VPS running the live EA
One of the easiest mistakes to miss is configuring email on one MetaTrader installation while the EA runs on another. For example, you may test the Email tab on a laptop while the live EA is running on a desktop, remote server, or VPS. The successful test belongs only to the terminal where it was performed.

And side-to-side scrolling plus zoom gives you the power to scroll horizontally and vertically through your music library, maps and Facebook feeds, and zoom in and out of photos and budget spreadsheets with a click.* * Requires Logitech SetPoint software (Windows) or Logitech Control Center software (Mac OS X)
- Two years of battery life practically eliminates the need to replace batteries. ** The On/Off switch helps conserve power, smart sleep mode extends battery life and an indicator light eliminates surprises. ** Battery life may vary based on user and computing conditions.
- The tiny Logitech Unifying receiver stays in your laptop. There’s no need to unplug it when you move around, so there’s less worry of it being lost. And you can easily add compatible wireless mice and keyboards to the same wireless receiver.
On the machine hosting the live EA, compare:
- the MetaTrader application instance;
- the trading account and broker server;
- the platform’s data directory;
- the Email-tab settings;
- the attached chart and EA inputs;
- the Experts and Journal logs.
Do not assume that copying an EA file or logging into the same trading account copies the terminal’s SMTP configuration. Perform the Email-tab test inside the exact instance that is expected to send the production alert.

An EA cannot process a new tick or send an alert while its terminal is closed, disconnected, suspended, or attached to an inactive chart. This explains cases where email works during development but stops after the computer is shut down.
Check the connection indicator and leave the correct terminal instance running continuously. If the computer sleeps, loses its network connection, applies an update, or closes MetaTrader, the EA cannot react to events during that period.
For a terminal that must operate while your computer is off, consider MetaTrader virtual hosting. MetaQuotes describes its virtual hosting as a way to keep trading robots operating around the clock. The EA, account environment, chart setup, and relevant settings must be migrated to the virtual platform; configuring the local terminal does not automatically configure the hosted instance.
Third-party forex VPS and broker-sponsored VPS arrangements may also be options, but compatibility, location, pricing, uptime, support, and any partner terms need to be checked individually. They are alternatives, not automatic fixes for an incorrect SMTP setup or a broken EA code path.

| Email-tab test succeeds, but the EA sends nothing | EA event path, chart, tester, or wrong terminal | Confirm the signal occurred, inspect logs, verify the EA is attached to the live chart, and check the exact machine. |
SendMail() returns false |
Mail request rejected or not queued | Use ResetLastError(), log the return value, and print GetLastError() immediately. |
| No email during a backtest | Strategy Tester limitation | Do not treat this as an SMTP failure; test the call in a running terminal. |
| EA worked on a development computer but not live | Different terminal instance or settings | Compare account, data directory, Email tab, chart, inputs, and logs on the live host. |
| EA stops after the computer is turned off | Terminal is not running | Use continuous operation or migrate the environment to MetaTrader virtual hosting. |
11. If you do not have the EA source code
You can still complete the platform-side checks: test the Email tab, confirm the live chart and automated-trading state, inspect Experts and Journal, and verify that the terminal is running on the intended machine. But you may not be able to prove whether the EA contains a SendMail() call or whether its signal condition can ever reach it.
Ask the EA developer whether email alerts are supported, which event triggers them, whether alerts are limited by a cooldown or daily count, and how failures are logged. If the terminal test succeeds but the EA never logs an attempted call, an MQL4/MQL5 code review or debugging service may be appropriate. Do not assume that every EA advertised with “alerts” sends email; some use only platform pop-ups, push notifications, or sounds.

Optional code-learning resource
Disclosure: this is an optional resource, not a requirement for fixing Email-tab settings. If you need to inspect or modify an MT4 EA yourself, Expert Advisor Programming for MetaTrader 4 is a practical MQL4 guide whose publisher describes coverage of Expert Advisors and email alerts. It is most relevant when the problem is inside the EA’s source code rather than in MetaTrader’s SMTP configuration. The referenced edition is a paperback sold through Amazon; verify the current edition and availability before buying.
Final checklist
- Did Tools > Options > Email > Test succeed in the same terminal that runs the EA?
- Are the SMTP server, port, login, password, From address, and To address current?
- Is the EA attached to the intended live chart and receiving ticks?
- Are terminal-wide automated trading and the EA’s own settings enabled?
- Did the EA’s actual signal or event occur?
- Does the source call
SendMail()? - Does the code log the Boolean result and
GetLastError()? - Did you inspect Experts, Journal, and the MT4
MQL4/LOGSfiles? - Are you testing a running terminal rather than the Strategy Tester?
- Is the correct terminal instance running continuously on the live computer or hosted environment?
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my EA not send email during a backtest?
No. MetaQuotes documents that SendMail() is not executed in the MT4 or MT5 Strategy Tester. Test email in a running terminal instead.
What should I check when MetaTrader’s email test works but my EA sends nothing?
Run Tools > Options > Email > Test in the exact MetaTrader instance hosting the EA. If that succeeds, inspect the EA’s event condition, SendMail() result, Experts log, Journal, and GetLastError() output.
Does SendMail() returning true guarantee delivery?
A successful SendMail() call means the message was placed in MetaTrader’s send queue, not that it definitely reached the inbox. SMTP rejection, spam filtering, and recipient-server rules can still affect delivery.
The Bottom Line
If MetaTrader’s Email-tab test fails, fix SMTP settings first. If it succeeds, the remaining problem is usually that the EA’s signal path never reaches SendMail(), the call fails without logging, the test is being performed in Strategy Tester, or the live EA is running in a different or offline terminal instance.
