This message means Minecraft’s connection was interrupted; it does not identify one specific cause or prove that you need to reinstall the game, change your router, or disable your firewall. The interruption could involve software on your computer, a network setting, or the server. Start by checking whether it happens on one server or several, then use that pattern to decide what to investigate next.
What the error means
Mojang’s legacy issue tracker describes this message as a connection being blocked by something on the player’s computer, a network setting, or a problem on the server. The tracker classifies the report as a technical-support issue rather than a Minecraft bug. Its entry concerns Minecraft 1.7.4, so it does not establish a version-specific cause or fix for current releases. Mojang’s MC-43634 issue entry gives the original context.

The wording, including “Internal Exception: java.io.IOException,” is a symptom, not a diagnosis. The same message has appeared in reports with different circumstances, so no single setting change can be treated as a guaranteed fix.
First, narrow down when and where it happens
Before changing settings, note the details that distinguish a server-side problem from a client or network problem:

- Does the disconnect happen while joining, while loading, after a predictable time, or during a particular in-game action?
- Does it happen on one server or on several unrelated servers?
- Can other players stay connected to the affected server, or are they disconnected too?
- Are you using vanilla Minecraft or a modded setup? If modded, do the client and server use the expected matching game version and modpack?
- Does the result change when you connect through a different network, if one is available to test?
These comparisons help direct troubleshooting, but none proves the cause by itself. Community reports describe different patterns, including a player who reported the error across servers after changing ISP and router, and a separate modded-server support case. They are individual historical reports, not evidence that the same cause or fix applies to everyone. See the Minecraft Forum support discussion.
If the error happens on one server
Contact the server operator and ask them to check server logs at the time of your disconnect. They can also confirm that the server is running the expected game version and configuration. If it is modded, compare the client and server versions and modpack setup rather than changing unrelated client settings at random.

If other players are also disconnecting, include that detail when contacting the operator. A server-side issue is one of the possibilities named by Mojang, but the message alone does not identify a particular server setting or establish that the server is at fault.
If the error happens on several servers
When multiple servers are affected, investigate the client and network as well as the servers. Mojang’s explanation includes both a program on the computer and a network setting as possible sources.

- Close and reopen Minecraft. Then test again and note whether the timing or server scope changes.
- Check for local software or network changes that coincide with the disconnect, such as recently changed settings or programs that may interfere with the connection. The available evidence does not identify a particular program or setting as the universal cause.
- Compare using another network, if practical. If the error changes, that is useful evidence about the network path, not proof that your router is defective.
Changing DNS, reinstalling Java, or buying a router, cable, or Wi-Fi adapter is not established as a general solution for this message. A wired connection can be an optional comparison when investigating Wi-Fi, but the reported cases do not show that Ethernet is necessary or that it fixes this error in general.
Check firewall rules without disabling protection
The available sources do not establish that turning off a firewall is a safe or reliable fix. Instead, check whether the correct Minecraft or Java executable is allowed by your existing firewall rules, following the current instructions for your operating system. Do not leave the firewall disabled as a troubleshooting shortcut. Firewall changes discussed in community posts are anecdotes, not controlled evidence that the change solves the problem.

What to send the server operator or support
If you need help, provide enough detail for someone else to compare the client and server sides:
- The time of the disconnect and what you were doing immediately beforehand.
- The server address or name, game edition and version, and whether you use mods.
- Whether other servers work and whether other players are affected.
- Any relevant client or server log excerpts, if available.
- Whether testing another network changed the result.
Mojang’s legacy tracker directs this broad connection problem to technical support instead of treating the message itself as an actionable bug report. The exact error also appears in a legacy Mojang issue and a Minecraft Forum modded-server discussion; neither establishes a guaranteed fix for current Minecraft versions.
