0x800700 is only an incomplete error-code prefix, so it does not identify one Windows Update problem or one dependable fix. First copy the complete code shown in the error message or Windows Update history, then confirm whether Windows was installing a normal update or upgrading/installing Windows itself. Microsoft documents different causes and repair paths for codes such as 0x8007000d, 0x80070005, 0x80070002 and 0x80070057. Applying a fix for the wrong suffix or the wrong installation context can waste time and may not address the failure.
The safest route is to record the missing details, run the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter, and then follow Microsoft’s instructions for the exact complete code and Windows version. The steps below keep routine updates separate from operating-system upgrades and explain what to do if the code remains unclear.

What does an error beginning with 0x800700 mean?
The characters 0x800700 identify only the beginning of a longer hexadecimal Windows error. The digits after that prefix carry the information needed to choose a repair. Microsoft treats the complete codes below as different problems, and the same-looking prefix can appear in both ordinary update failures and Windows upgrade or installation errors.
| Complete code | Context covered by Microsoft guidance | Meaning or symptom described |
|---|---|---|
| 0x8007000d | Windows upgrade or installation | Invalid data |
| 0x80070005 | Windows Update troubleshooting | Access or permission problem |
| 0x80070002 | Windows Update troubleshooting | Update installation failure |
| 0x80070057 | Windows upgrade or installation | Incorrect parameter |
These descriptions are not interchangeable diagnoses. For example, an instruction intended for invalid data during an upgrade should not automatically be used for an access problem during a monthly update. Treat the suffix and the installation context as a pair.

How do I find the complete Windows Update code?
Do this before deleting files, resetting update components or attempting an operating-system repair. A complete code gives Microsoft Support, and you, a way to select the relevant instructions instead of guessing from the shared prefix.
- Reopen the error. If the notification is still available, copy every character, including all digits after 0x800700. Do not stop when you see the prefix.
- Check Update history. In Settings, open Windows Update and then Update history. Find the failed entry and record the complete error code shown with it.
- Record the update identity. Write down the update name and any KB number displayed. This distinguishes one failed package from another when several updates are pending.
- Identify the installation type. Decide whether you were installing a routine monthly or feature update, or whether you were upgrading or installing Windows itself. Microsoft publishes separate troubleshooting material for those situations.
- Note your Windows edition and version. Include whether the computer is running Windows 11 or Windows 10 and the version shown in Settings. Navigation and available support can vary by release.
If Update history shows only 0x800700, look at the original failure dialog, the Windows Update page, or the upgrade installer screen again. If no screen provides the suffix, keep that limitation in your notes and use only general troubleshooting until Microsoft Support can identify the event from your Windows version and update details.
Which Microsoft troubleshooting path applies to my failure?
Choose the page that matches both the complete code and what Windows was doing. Microsoft has one set of guidance for Windows Update problems and another for Windows upgrade or installation errors.
- Routine Windows Update: use the Windows Update troubleshooting guidance when Windows was downloading or installing a normal update through Settings.
- Windows upgrade or installation: use the upgrade/install error guidance when you were moving to a new Windows release or installing Windows itself.
- Unclear context: do not combine procedures from both pages. First identify the screen that produced the error, the update or installer involved, and the complete code.
The distinction matters even when the digits look similar. A repair that changes upgrade media or installation components may be irrelevant to a failed update package, while an update-cache procedure may not address invalid data in an operating-system installation.
How do I run the Windows Update troubleshooter?
Start with Microsoft’s built-in troubleshooter before attempting more disruptive changes. It can identify common Windows Update configuration problems and tells you when a restart is required.
Windows 11: start in Get Help
Microsoft says Windows 11 users should begin with the automated Windows Update troubleshooter in the Get Help app. Open Get Help, search for the Windows Update troubleshooter, and follow its prompts. Allow it to complete its checks and apply any actions it offers.

General Settings route
Microsoft’s published general route is Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Windows Update > Run. Select Run for Windows Update, wait for the diagnostic to finish, and accept a suggested action only if it describes your problem. Restart the computer when the troubleshooter asks you to, then return to Windows Update and select Check for updates.
Older Windows versions
Settings navigation differs on older Windows releases. Use the Windows-version-specific instructions in Microsoft’s troubleshooting article rather than assuming the Windows 11 menu exists on your computer. After the version-appropriate troubleshooter completes, restart and check for updates again.
The troubleshooter is a first diagnostic step, not proof that the underlying error has been permanently repaired. If the same complete code returns, continue with the instructions for that code and installation context.
What should I do for error 0x8007000d?
Microsoft describes 0x8007000d as invalid data in an upgrade or installation context. Confirm that your failure occurred during a Windows upgrade or install before using that page; the label alone does not establish that a routine Windows Update has the same cause.

What should I do for error 0x80070057?
Microsoft describes 0x80070057 as an incorrect parameter in its upgrade or installation guidance. Verify that the error came from an upgrade or installation screen, then follow that article’s sequence instead of treating the code as a generic Windows Update failure.
The documented options include disk cleanup, checking the drive, and resetting Windows Update components. Perform these in the order and with the safeguards Microsoft specifies. Before a reset, close applications and make sure you understand which update services or folders the instructions change. A drive check can take time, so keep the computer connected to power and do not force a shutdown while it is running.
If the full code was produced by an ordinary update, use the Windows Update troubleshooting page that matches that context. Escalate when the code changes, the drive check reports a separate storage problem, or the reset does not alter the failure.
What should I do for error 0x80070005?
Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting material associates 0x80070005 with access or permission problems. Confirm that Windows Update, rather than an operating-system installer, displayed the code, then follow the Windows Update instructions for permissions and update access.
Do not assume that deleting system folders or disabling security software is the correct response. The complete code and the Microsoft procedure determine which account, service or permission needs attention. If the computer is managed by an employer or school, an administrator may control the settings involved; record that fact before changing them.
What should I do for error 0x80070002?
Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting material lists 0x80070002 as an update installation failure. Use the Windows Update-specific article for the complete code, and keep the update name or KB number beside you while working through its checks.

If the article asks you to restart, do so before trying the update again. A different code after the restart is useful evidence, not necessarily a worsening problem: record the new code and switch to the instructions for that new code rather than repeating the old procedure.
What if the troubleshooter and code-specific steps do not work?
Stop changing settings at random and assemble a concise incident record. Include the complete error code, Windows version and edition, update name or KB number, the date and time of the failure, and whether this was a normal update or an upgrade/install. Also note which Microsoft troubleshooter ran, whether it requested a restart, and whether the code changed afterward.
- Run Windows Update once more after the required restart, and record the exact result.
- If the failure repeats, consult Microsoft’s page for the complete code and the matching context again; do not apply a procedure from a different code.
- If the code is still truncated, provide the original message and Update history entry to Microsoft Support so the missing suffix can be identified.
- For a managed PC, contact the organization’s administrator before changing permissions, services or update components.
No documented procedure guarantees success for every computer. Hardware, policy settings, the Windows release and the particular update package can change the outcome, so preserve the error details even when one attempt appears to help.
Does Windows 10 support affect this troubleshooting?
Yes. Microsoft Support states: “After October 14, 2025, Microsoft will no longer provide free software updates from Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10.” That date applies to Windows 10, not Windows 11.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which mistakes make an 0x800700 failure harder to fix?
- Using the prefix as though it were a full code: 0x800700 alone cannot distinguish invalid data, permissions, an incorrect parameter or an update installation failure.
- Mixing update and upgrade procedures: Microsoft separates those scenarios because they involve different processes.
- Skipping the restart: the troubleshooter may make a change that is not active until Windows restarts.
- Failing to record the update identity: a KB number or update name helps separate one package failure from another.
- Repeating a procedure after the code changes: a new suffix requires a fresh diagnosis.
- Assuming Windows 10 and Windows 11 have identical menus: use the instructions for the installed version.
Following the diagnostic order protects your evidence. Identify the full code, classify the installation, run the built-in troubleshooter, and then apply only the matching Microsoft procedure.

Frequently asked questions
Can the same computer show different 0x800700 suffixes?
Yes. Separate update packages or installation stages can produce different complete codes on the same machine. Treat each new suffix as a new diagnostic event and keep the associated update name with it.
Should I upgrade from Windows 10 immediately after an update error?
Microsoft recommends moving to Windows 11 because Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, but an upgrade is a separate operation. Check compatibility and use the upgrade-specific instructions if the upgrade itself reports an error.
What should I save before contacting Microsoft Support?
Save a screenshot or transcription of the complete code, the Update history entry, your Windows version, the update or KB number, and whether the failure occurred during a routine update or an upgrade. Include any new code seen after restarting or running the troubleshooter.
Is a Windows Update troubleshooter result a diagnosis?
It is an automated check and may apply a correction, but it does not replace identifying the complete code. If the failure returns, use the code-specific Microsoft article for the same installation context.
