If Windows Video Editor shows 0x80070057, first copy the code exactly from the dialog, then identify when the failure occurs: while the app starts, a project opens, a clip imports, or an export runs. The commonly reported sequence is 0x80070057; 0X800070057 contains an extra zero and may indicate that the message was mistyped. The code is a symptom rather than a single diagnosis. The cause can be the Photos or Clipchamp package, one project, a missing source file, unavailable storage, or an unsupported media codec.
Protect the project and original media before changing anything. Then work from the least destructive checks—restart, update, Repair, and only then Reset or reinstall. If the old Video Editor command has disappeared from Photos, that may be an intentional product change: Microsoft now recommends Clipchamp, while Photos Legacy retains the older editor.

What does error 0x80070057 mean in Windows Video Editor?
0x80070057 is a general Windows error value often shown when an operation cannot use the data or configuration it received. In Video Editor, it does not identify one universal fault. The same code can appear when the app package is damaged, a project points to media that moved, a drive or network share is unavailable, or a clip uses a format the editor cannot decode.
Use the exact wording and capitalization shown by Windows as your starting point. If the dialog really says 0X800070057, record that value separately instead of silently changing it. A transcription error can send troubleshooting in the wrong direction.

Match the symptom to the likely layer
| When the error appears | What to test first |
|---|---|
| Photos or Clipchamp will not launch | Windows updates, Store app updates, Repair, then reinstall. |
| The app opens but one project will not load | A duplicate of the project, its source paths, available storage, and the project file itself. |
| One clip will not import or preview | That file, its codec, and the drive or folder containing it. |
| Export stops at the same point | The clip at that position, free internal disk space, and the destination folder. |
| The Video Editor command is missing from Photos | Whether you are using the new Photos app or Photos Legacy; reinstalling current Photos does not promise to restore the retired menu. |
Why did Video Editor disappear from Photos?
The current Photos app no longer includes the previous Video Editor option. Microsoft recommends the Clipchamp video editor instead. The missing command can therefore be expected behavior, not evidence of a broken installation.
Photos Legacy remains available on Windows and includes the older Video Editor interface. Choose it when you specifically need the former timeline workflow, but do not assume that a current Photos reinstall will bring that menu back. For current editing, open Clipchamp from Windows, the Microsoft Store app, Photos, or app.clipchamp.com.

What should I save before trying a fix?
Back up before Repair, Reset, reinstalling, converting media, or relinking files. A repair attempt can leave the project intact, but Reset can clear local app data, settings, or sign-in state. A conversion or relink performed on the only copy can also make it harder to determine what originally failed.
- Close Photos, Clipchamp, and any file-import dialog.
- Duplicate the project file or project folder and give the copy a clear name such as
ProjectName-troubleshooting. - Keep every original video, image, and audio file. Do not back up only the timeline; editors may store references to the original paths rather than the media itself.
- Preserve the folder structure if possible. If a project references an external drive, network share, or moved folder, reconnect that location before opening the copy.
- Make a second copy on removable storage when available. A USB flash drive is useful as a backup destination, not as a cure for the error.
- Do not delete originals after importing or converting. Clipchamp may require relinking when an original is moved or disappears.
How do I fix 0x80070057 safely, step by step?
Follow these steps in order. Stop when the failure is resolved; destructive steps are deliberately later in the sequence.
1. Record the failing stage
Write down whether the problem occurs at launch, project opening, import, preview, or export. Note the project name, the clip being processed, the destination folder, and whether the failure repeats at the same point. This separates an app-wide problem from one damaged project or asset.

2. Restart Windows and close competing apps
Save your work, restart Windows, and try a blank project before reopening the important copy. Close other video editors, cloud-sync dialogs, and applications that may be writing to the same drive. A restart clears temporary locks and gives the editor a clean session; it does not repair a missing source file.
3. Install pending Windows and Store updates
Open Settings > Windows Update, install available updates, and restart if Windows requests it. Then open Microsoft Store, choose Library, and select Get updates (the label may vary slightly by Windows build). Update Photos and Clipchamp if they appear in the list, then test a blank project.
4. Use Repair before Reset
Repair is the lower-risk app action because it attempts to correct the package without intentionally clearing local data.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Photos or Clipchamp, depending on which app shows the error.
- Select the three-dot menu, choose Advanced options, and select Repair when available.
- Launch the app, create a blank project, and import a small known-good file.
If the blank test works, the package is probably usable and the original project or one of its assets deserves focused testing.
5. Reset only after confirming the backup
If Repair does not change the behavior, return to the same Advanced options page and choose Reset. Reset can remove local app data, settings, and sign-in state. Reopen the backed-up project afterward and be prepared to relink its source files. Do not use Reset while the only copy of a project or its media exists solely inside the app’s local storage.
6. Reinstall the affected package
If the app still will not launch or a blank project fails after Reset, uninstall and reinstall the affected package from Microsoft Store. Test the clean installation with a blank project and one known-good clip before opening the important project. If the clean test succeeds, open the duplicate and add media gradually; if it fails, the problem is broader than one timeline.

How do I restore a project that will not open?
Work on a duplicate and treat the original as evidence. A project can fail even when the editor itself launches normally, usually because a referenced path or asset is unavailable.
Check every referenced location
- Reconnect external USB drives and verify that Windows assigns the same drive letter used when the project was created.
- Reconnect network shares and sign in before opening the project.
- Check that moved folders still exist and that filenames have not changed.
- Confirm free space on the internal drive as well as the source and destination drives.
Open a blank project and add the source files one at a time. If the blank project accepts the files but the original does not, the timeline or project metadata is the likely fault. If adding one particular asset reproduces the error, remove that asset from the duplicate, save under a new name, and test the remaining timeline.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen Clipchamp stalls while loading
Refresh or reopen the project, check available memory and internal disk space, and temporarily disable browser extensions that interfere with the editor. If necessary, clear only cached browser data rather than deleting account or project data. Keep local originals available because project storage, content backup, sharing, and work or school projects can use OneDrive or SharePoint even though core editing and export are processed locally.
How do I fix a video that will not import or export?
Isolate the exact file instead of repeatedly retrying the entire project. Import a small, known-good clip first, then add the suspected file to a duplicate project.
Convert a problem clip without deleting the original
If one clip will not load, convert a copy to MP4 and import the converted copy. Conversion can change the codecs inside a file even when the original already has an MP4 extension, which may make it readable. Keep the original untouched so you can restore it, compare results, or use it elsewhere.
Check the export destination
Export to a local folder on the internal drive with ample free space, rather than directly to a disconnected network share or removable drive. If export succeeds locally, copy the finished file afterward. If it stops at a repeatable point, identify the clip at that position and test a duplicate timeline without it.

What should I do about HEIF and HEVC phone media?
Many phones record photos as HEIF and video as HEVC. Install the matching HEIF Image Extensions and HEVC Video Extensions from Microsoft Store, or use the phone or Windows automatic-conversion option and re-import the converted files.
These extensions address media compatibility only. They do not restore the old Video Editor command in the current Photos app, and they will not fix a project whose source path points to a missing drive. Test one converted copy first and retain the original phone files.
Can I recover deleted Video Editor or Clipchamp media?
Look in the operating-system Recycle Bin for deleted originals. Clipchamp exports may also be present in the project’s OneDrive Exports folder. Recovery is not guaranteed: Microsoft warns that it may be impossible when the original media was deleted and content backup was not enabled.
Do not empty the Recycle Bin or remove cloud copies until the project opens and exports successfully. If a recovered file has a different name or location, relink it in a duplicate project and verify every scene before replacing the original.
Which editor should I use: Clipchamp or Photos Legacy?
Choose based on the workflow you need, not on the error code alone.
| Consideration | Current Clipchamp | Photos Legacy |
|---|---|---|
| Editor availability | Microsoft’s recommended current video editor; accessible from Windows, Photos, Microsoft Store, or the web app. | Retains the older Video Editor interface. |
| Project compatibility | Uses its own project workflow and may require relinking when source files move or disappear. | Designed for projects made with the legacy Video Editor; compatibility with newer Clipchamp projects is not established. |
| Storage and backup | Core editing and export are local, while project storage, content backup, sharing, and work or school projects can involve OneDrive or SharePoint. | Keep local project and source-media backups; do not assume cloud recovery. |
| Export limits | Personal free tier supports watermark-free exports up to 1080p; other features depend on account or plan. | Export behavior depends on the legacy app and project; no current universal limit is established here. |
| Best fit | New projects and the supported current workflow. | Readers who specifically need the former timeline and have access to Photos Legacy. |
Switching editors can require rebuilding or relinking a project. Preserve the originals and test a short copy before committing to a new workflow.

What if none of these fixes works?
Use the stage notes to narrow the next action. An app-wide failure after reinstall points toward Windows or account state; a single-project failure points toward the project file or its paths; a single-clip failure points toward encoding or corruption; and an export-only failure points toward the timeline segment, destination, or available disk space.
- Keep the exact error text, project copy, original media, and the last successful step.
- Test with a blank project and a known-good local clip after every major change.
- Do not overwrite the original project while experimenting with conversion or relinking.
- Once a project opens and exports, make a fresh backup of both the project and the final media.

How can I tell whether the project file or a video clip is broken?
Create a blank project and import the source files individually. If one file reliably triggers the error, work from a converted copy of that file; if all files work but the original timeline does not, the project structure or a referenced path is the stronger suspect.
Will changing an MP4 file to another MP4 fix Video Editor?
It can, because the container extension does not reveal the codecs inside the file. Converting a copy may rewrite those codecs into a combination the editor can decode, but keep the original and verify audio, subtitles, orientation and frame rate afterward.
Where are Clipchamp exports stored if I cannot find them?
Check the project’s OneDrive Exports folder as well as the local folder chosen during export. Availability depends on how the project was configured and whether the file was later moved or deleted.
Can I keep editing an old Video Editor project without Photos Legacy?
You may need to recreate or migrate the work in Clipchamp because the current Photos app no longer includes the former editor. Preserve the old project and all source media before attempting a migration, since the two workflows do not guarantee direct project compatibility.
