AppCrash is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Windows is reporting that a particular program terminated unexpectedly. The fastest reliable fix is to identify the executable, capture the exact crash time, and read the matching record in Event Viewer. Start with Windows and app updates, then isolate third-party startup software or drivers. If the crash repeats, collect a Windows Error Reporting (WER) dump for the named executable so WinDbg or the app’s developer can identify the failing code. A Microsoft file such as ntdll.dll in the record is often only the victim, not the original cause.
What does “AppCrash” mean on Windows 10?
An AppCrash entry means an application process ended because Windows detected an unhandled exception or another fatal condition. It can affect a game, launcher, utility, or any other desktop program. The message does not, by itself, identify whether the cause is a damaged installation, an incompatible update, a driver conflict, corrupted memory, or a defect in the application.

Windows Error Reporting (WER) records details about application faults, unresponsive applications, and related failures. Two event records are particularly useful:
- Event ID 1000 is the application crash record. It normally includes the faulting application, faulting module, exception code, fault offset, process ID, file paths, and report ID.
- Event ID 1001 is the related Windows Error Reporting entry. Repeated 1000 and 1001 entries around the same time confirm a recurring application-crash pattern.
Do not treat the word “AppCrash” as a repair instruction. Use it as a pointer to the exact program and failure instance you need to investigate.

What should I record before changing anything?
Write down the facts while the failure is easy to reproduce. A precise record makes later comparison and support escalation much more useful than a generic “the app stopped working” message.
- The application name and the executable file name.
- The executable path shown by Event Viewer, such as the game or launcher folder.
- Whether the crash occurs at launch, when loading a save, joining a match, opening a menu, or during another repeatable action.
- The exact date and time, including your local time zone.
- Whether the crash began after a Windows update, application update, graphics or audio driver change, System Restore, or new peripheral.
- Any visible error text and whether the program closes, freezes, or returns to the desktop.
Reproducing the same crash at the same action is valuable. Stop changing settings temporarily if you can reproduce it; each unrecorded change makes cause-and-effect harder to establish.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →How do I find the AppCrash record in Event Viewer?
Event Viewer is the first diagnostic step because it gives you the names and codes needed for every later decision.
- Press
Win+R, typeeventvwr.msc, and press Enter. - In the left pane, open Windows Logs, then select Application.
- In the middle pane, sort by Date and Time or use Find… to search for the executable name.
- Open the Error event whose timestamp matches your crash. Look for Event ID 1000. Then inspect a nearby Event ID 1001 entry from the same failure.
- On the General and Details tabs, copy the faulting application name, faulting module name, exception code, exception offset, process ID, application and module paths, application/module versions, and report ID.
Save the text in a note before trying repairs. If you later contact the game’s developer or Microsoft, provide the exact exception code and report ID together with the application version and reproduction steps. Searching the exact exception code and module name as a pair is more informative than searching “AppCrash” alone.
Which Event Viewer fields matter most?
| Field | What it tells you | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Faulting application | The executable that terminated | Target updates, reinstall attempts, and any WER dump configuration to this file. |
| Faulting module | The module Windows reported at the failure address | Treat it as a clue; compare it with the exception code, recent changes, and reproduction steps. |
| Exception code | The type of exception raised | Include it in searches and support reports; it narrows the investigation. |
| Fault offset | The location within the named module where the exception was reported | Useful to a developer or debugger, especially when paired with a dump. |
| Report ID | Identifier for the WER report | Preserve it so separate records and support conversations can refer to the same incident. |
What are the safest fixes for an AppCrash?
Apply reversible changes first. Test the same action after each change so you know which step altered the result.

1. Install pending Windows updates
- Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates, install all applicable updates, and restart when Windows requests it.
- Reproduce the crash and record the new time if it remains.
Microsoft’s application-crash guidance places Windows Update and an affected-app update before deeper investigation because compatibility fixes can remove the trigger without changing diagnostic settings.
2. Update the affected app or game
Use the app’s normal updater or the store/launcher from which you installed it. If the program has a “verify” or “repair” function, run that before deleting configuration or save files. Keep the executable path and version from Event Viewer; a second copy of the app in another folder can be updated accidentally while the crashing copy remains unchanged.
3. Update relevant device drivers
For crashes tied to graphics rendering, audio playback, storage, a controller, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or another peripheral, install the current driver supplied for that device and your Windows edition. Restart after installation and test again. Driver changes are especially important when the crash began immediately after a hardware or driver change.
4. Retry an MSIX app affected by System Restore
Microsoft documents a specific class of MSIX-packaged app failures after System Restore, including “This app can’t open,” non-response, I/O errors, and crashes. First retry the app once. If it still fails, reinstall it from Microsoft Store or its original source, then run Windows Update and test again. This branch applies to the packaged app scenario; it is not a general explanation for every desktop executable.
How can Safe Mode or msconfig reveal a conflicting program?
A crash that disappears when third-party services, drivers, or startup programs are removed points toward a conflict outside the application itself. Use one isolation method at a time and keep a record of what you changed.

Test in Safe Mode
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Recovery.
- Under Advanced startup, choose Restart now.
- After the recovery menu appears, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- Choose the Safe Mode option. Sign in and attempt the same operation if the application can run in that reduced environment.
Safe Mode loads a limited set of drivers, so a game that requires a full graphics stack may not run there. In that case, use the result only as an isolation clue and continue with a clean boot.
Use System Configuration (msconfig) for a clean boot
- Press
Win+R, typemsconfig, and press Enter. - On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services, then disable the remaining third-party services.
- Open the Startup tab and choose Open Task Manager. Disable enabled third-party startup items.
- Apply the changes and restart. Test the application using the same reproduction steps.
- If the crash stops, re-enable services and startup items in small groups, restarting and testing after each group. When the crash returns, divide that group again until you identify the conflicting component.
- Return to
msconfigand restore normal startup after testing, unless you have a documented reason to keep a component disabled.
Do not disable Microsoft services indiscriminately. The purpose of hiding them is to remove third-party variables while leaving Windows components available.
How do I collect a crash dump for a repeatable failure?
If updates and isolation do not stop a reproducible crash, a full user-mode dump gives a debugger or the application vendor more evidence than Event Viewer alone. Configure WER LocalDumps for the exact executable named in Event ID 1000.
Configure WER LocalDumps
- Create a folder such as
C:WERand ensure the account that will reproduce the crash can write to it. - Open
regedit.exeas an administrator. - Go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsWindows Error ReportingLocalDumps. Create theLocalDumpskey if it does not exist. - Under
LocalDumps, create a subkey whose name exactly matches the crashing executable, including.exe. - In that executable key, create
DumpFolderas an expandable string value and set it toC:WER. - Create
DumpTypeas a 32-bit DWORD and set it to2for a full dump. - Create
DumpCountas a 32-bit DWORD and choose a small limit so repeated crashes do not fill the drive. - Close Registry Editor, reproduce the crash once, and check
C:WERfor the resulting dump.
Registry-based dump settings are more invasive than reading Event Viewer. Use them only for the named process, keep the folder protected because a dump can contain data held in memory, and note the exact executable path and time for every file.

Microsoft’s crash guidance also describes GFlags page heap for cases where heap corruption is suspected. Page heap changes memory allocation behavior and can make a faulty process terminate earlier, which helps diagnosis but can increase resource use. Enable it only for the affected executable, collect the needed reproduction, and disable it afterward. Leaving page heap enabled can change normal behavior and make later testing misleading.

How should I analyze or hand off the dump?
Open the dump in WinDbg or provide it to the application’s developer. Include the Event Viewer 1000/1001 text, application and module versions, exception code, report ID, Windows build, driver changes, and the exact reproduction sequence. A developer can use symbols and the call stack to identify the component that raised the exception; the dump is not a guaranteed repair by itself.
For a Microsoft-owned process, Microsoft recommends contacting Microsoft Support. For a game or other third-party executable, send the dump only through the vendor’s official support channel and follow its privacy and file-size requirements. After collection, remove the per-process LocalDumps registry key and turn off page heap so future crashes do not continue generating files or altered memory behavior.
Is the faulting module always the cause?
No. ntdll.dll, kernel32.dll, and kernelbase.dll are used by many Windows programs and can be named when corruption or an invalid call originated elsewhere. They may be the place where Windows detected the failure rather than the component that introduced it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCorrelate the module with the exception code, application and module versions, recent driver or app changes, and the action that reproduces the crash. A third-party module that appears consistently in full dumps is a stronger lead than a single Event Viewer line naming a heavily used Windows DLL.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which troubleshooting option should I choose first?
| Option | Reversibility | Diagnostic value | Scope and risk | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Retry and record the time | Immediate and fully reversible | Confirms whether the behavior is repeatable | One application; no system change | Always do this before modifying settings. |
| Event Viewer 1000/1001 | Read-only | Provides executable, module, exception, offset, and report ID | One failure record; very low risk | First actionable diagnosis. |
| Windows/app/driver updates | Usually reversible through the vendor’s recovery process, but version changes can affect behavior | Tests compatibility fixes | Can affect the system or application broadly | Apply before advanced debugging. |
| Safe Mode or clean boot | Reversible by restarting or restoring startup settings | Shows whether third-party components are involved | May disable features and prevent some games from running | Suspected driver, overlay, or startup conflict. |
| WER full dump | Requires registry cleanup afterward | Highest evidence value for a repeatable crash | Per-process setting; dumps may contain sensitive memory | Vendor or WinDbg escalation. |
| GFlags page heap | Must be explicitly disabled | Useful for suspected heap corruption | Advanced; changes allocation behavior | Use only when a dump specialist recommends it. |
What if the crash still happens after all of these steps?
Compare the new Event Viewer record with the original rather than assuming the repair failed. A changed exception code, module, application version, or timestamp pattern can show that one trigger was removed while another remains. If the same executable, code, and action still fail, provide the saved event fields and a fresh dump to the application’s vendor. If different programs begin crashing, widen the investigation to system-wide drivers or Windows components instead of repeatedly reinstalling one app.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Event Viewer repair an AppCrash by itself?
No. Event Viewer is a read-only diagnostic console. Its value is the precise executable, module, exception code, and report ID it records; you use those details to choose an update, isolation test, or dump collection.
Will a game always run in Windows 10 Safe Mode?
No. Safe Mode loads only a limited driver set, and many games require the normal graphics, audio, or launcher stack. If the game cannot start there, use a clean boot with third-party services and startup items disabled instead of treating that as a failed test.
Is it safe to send a WER dump to a game developer?
A dump can contain data that was present in the program’s memory, including paths or other session information. Keep it private, review the vendor’s upload instructions, and use only the developer’s official support channel.
What should I do with LocalDumps after the issue is diagnosed?
Delete the per-executable LocalDumps registry key and remove old dump files from the collection folder when they are no longer needed. This prevents continued file creation and reduces the chance of leaving sensitive process data on the drive.
