When a Windows 10 app does nothing, opens and closes, or shows an error, first determine whether it is a Microsoft Store app or a traditional desktop program. Restart Windows, install pending updates, and update the app. Then use Repair before Reset, because Reset removes local app data and sign-in details. Reinstall the program if those options fail. For packaged apps, PowerShell re-registration can restore a broken registration; when several apps fail, repair Windows with DISM followed by System File Checker. Persistent failures can involve permissions, AppLocker policy, relocated profile folders, or deployment logs. Back up important files before resets, reinstalls, or system-file repairs.
Why won’t a Windows 10 app start?
A launch failure usually falls into one of two groups: a problem with one app’s files or registration, or a Windows-wide problem affecting several programs. Microsoft Store apps use the packaged-app system and have Store-specific repair menus. Traditional desktop applications use their own installers and may not expose the same controls. Choosing the right branch first prevents you from applying a command to the wrong type of program.

| What you installed | Typical examples | Best first repair path |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Store app | An app installed from Microsoft Store and listed in your Store library | Store updates, Settings repair/reset, reinstall from My Library, then packaged-app registration checks |
| Traditional desktop program | An installer downloaded as an executable or supplied on installation media | Restart, update or reinstall from the publisher, and use Settings repair/reset only if Windows exposes those controls |
If you are unsure, open Microsoft Store and check My Library. A program that is not listed there is usually a desktop installation, although some publishers distribute both editions under the same name.
What should I try before changing app data?
Use the least destructive checks first. They resolve temporary locks, pending servicing operations, and outdated app components without deleting your settings.

- Close the app completely. If a window is stuck, close it from the taskbar or Task Manager, then try again. A background process can prevent a second launch.
- Restart Windows. Choose Start > Power > Restart, not merely Sleep. Test the app immediately after signing back in.
- Install Windows updates. Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, select Check for updates, install available updates, and restart when requested.
- Update the affected app. For Store software, use the Store’s update command. For a desktop program, use its built-in updater or obtain the current installer from its publisher.
- Confirm compatibility. Microsoft advises checking that the app supports Windows 10. An application built only for a different Windows release may install but fail at activation.
Do not reset an app during this initial pass. Reset is a data-destructive operation, so record configuration details and verify that you know the account credentials before using it.
How do I fix a Microsoft Store app that will not open?
Microsoft’s Store-app sequence is: update Windows, update Microsoft Store and the app, try Repair, then Reset, reinstall, and finally run the Windows Store Apps troubleshooter. Work through those stages in order so that a reversible action is attempted before one that deletes local data.

1. Update Microsoft Store itself
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Select See more (the three-dot menu).
- Choose Downloads and updates.
- Select Get updates. Allow Store and app updates to finish, then restart Windows and test the app.
Microsoft describes this as part of its official sequence for Store apps: “If you’re in Windows 10 and you’re having problems with an app from Microsoft Store, consider these updates and fixes.”
2. Run Repair, then Reset only if needed
- Open Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
- Select the affected app and choose Advanced options if that link appears.
- Select Repair and test the app after Windows completes the operation.
- If Repair changes nothing, return to the same page, choose Reset, and confirm. Test the app again after the reset.
Repair attempts to reload the app while preserving its data. Reset permanently deletes the app’s local data and reinstalls it; preferences, cached information, and sign-in details can be lost. Write down settings and make sure you can sign in again before confirming Reset.
3. Reinstall from My Library
When Repair and Reset do not restore launch behavior, uninstall the Store app from Settings > Apps > Apps & features. Open Microsoft Store, go to My Library, find the app, and select Install. Reinstallation replaces the package but does not guarantee that a Windows permission or policy problem is corrected, so continue to the advanced checks if the fresh installation also fails.
4. Run the Windows Store Apps troubleshooter
Open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Windows Store apps and follow the prompts. The troubleshooter checks common Store-app configuration problems. Restart and test the app when it finishes.

How do I fix a traditional desktop program that opens and closes?
Desktop software normally needs its own installer or updater. Windows 10 may still offer Repair and Reset controls, but Microsoft notes that not every desktop app supports them.
- Restart Windows and launch the program again.
- Open Settings > Apps > Apps & features, select the program, and choose Advanced options if available.
- Choose Repair first. This is the lower-risk option because it is intended to reload the app without deleting its data.
- If Repair fails and you have recorded settings and confirmed your sign-in details, choose Reset if Windows provides it. Reset removes app data and can erase preferences.
- If the program still will not start, uninstall it, restart Windows, and install a current copy using the publisher’s installer. Use the program’s own update or repair option when the installer offers one.
If installation, removal, or updating itself is damaged, Microsoft provides a Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter. Use it when Windows cannot complete an uninstall, reports a broken installation record, or refuses to update the program.
What is the difference between Repair and Reset?
Repair is the preservation-first choice; Reset is a clean reinstallation that sacrifices local app data. The following comparison helps you choose the least disruptive action.
| Action | App scope | Data impact | Privilege | Reversibility | When to use it |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Repair | One selected app | Intended to retain app data and preferences | Normally an ordinary user through Settings | Low risk; existing data remains | First Settings-based intervention after updates |
| Reset | One selected app | Deletes local app data, preferences, and sign-in details | Normally an ordinary user through Settings | Not reversible for deleted local data | After Repair fails and credentials/settings are recorded |
| Reinstall | One app or package | Removes the installed copy; data handling depends on the app | Usually an ordinary user, but some desktop installers request elevation | Reversible by installing again; configuration may not return | Damaged or incomplete app files |
| DISM then SFC | Windows image and system files; can help many apps | Does not target app preferences, but changes protected Windows components | Administrator Command Prompt | System-level operation; create a backup first | Several apps fail or Windows components appear damaged |
How can PowerShell re-register a packaged app?
A Store app can be installed on disk but no longer registered correctly for your user account. Re-registration rebuilds that association from the package manifest. Use a non-elevated PowerShell window for the affected user; running it as another account can repair the wrong profile.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Sign in to the Windows account that cannot launch the app.
- Open Start, type PowerShell, and open it without choosing Run as administrator.
- Run the following example for Calculator (replace
calculatorwith a distinctive part of the app name):
Get-AppxPackage *calculator* | Foreach { Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)AppXManifest.xml" }
- Wait for the command to finish. Close PowerShell, restart Windows, and test the app.
The command only acts when Windows finds a package matching the name pattern. If it returns no package, verify the spelling and confirm that the app is installed for the current user.
What if the package belongs to another user?
An administrator can inspect packages installed for all accounts with:

Get-AppxPackage -AllUsers
Use the results to identify the package and its installation location, then register the correct manifest for the affected account. Registration must ultimately be performed in the context of the user who needs to launch the app; registering only an administrator’s profile does not repair another user’s activation.
What if re-registration reports a damaged package?
Microsoft’s packaged-app guidance recommends trying Reset-AppxPackage when registration does not help. Resetting the package can remove its local data, so treat it like the Settings Reset option and preserve any needed configuration first. If the package is corrupted or incomplete, obtain a fresh copy through Microsoft Store or Windows Package Manager (winget) rather than repeatedly registering the same damaged files.
How do I repair Windows files when several apps fail?
When unrelated apps fail, or Store components and desktop programs show errors together, repair the Windows image before repeating app-specific reinstalls. Microsoft documents this order: run Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM), then System File Checker (SFC), from an administrator Command Prompt.
- Open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Allow DISM to complete; interrupting it can leave the repair unfinished.
- After DISM finishes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and test the apps that previously failed.
DISM and SFC address corruption in the Windows image and protected system files. They do not replace an app’s compatibility check, repair a user-account permission, or fix a package that is missing or corrupted on disk.
What advanced causes should I investigate if basic repairs fail?
Permissions and AppLocker policy
Microsoft lists permission problems and AppLocker policies among causes of Store and modern apps failing to activate. On a managed computer, an administrator may have intentionally blocked an app. Check with the device administrator rather than changing policy blindly; removing a restriction can violate organizational rules.

Relocated profile folders
Store apps may no longer be supported or expected to work when C:Users, an individual user profile, or C:ProgramData has been moved from its expected location. If you recently redirected one of these folders, document the change and test with the original Windows profile paths before attempting repeated package resets.
Event logs
When the app still fails after updates, repair, reset, reinstall, registration, and system-file checks, inspect the logs for an activation or deployment error at the moment of launch. In Event Viewer, review:
- Windows Logs > Application
- Windows Logs > System
- Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft-Windows-AppXDeploymentServer/Operational
- Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft-Windows-TWinUI/Operational
- Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft-Windows-AppModel-Runtime/Admin
Record the event time, application name, package name, and error code. Those details distinguish a deployment failure from a policy or profile-path problem and give an administrator a reproducible lead.
Which fix should I choose for one app versus many?
Match the intervention to its scope and risk instead of jumping straight to a system-wide command.

How should I prepare before a reset, reinstall, or system repair?
Back up important files before any operation that removes app data or changes Windows components. Microsoft specifically identifies copying files to a USB flash drive as one backup option. A backup is preparation media, not a fix for the launch problem.
- Copy documents, saves, screenshots, and other irreplaceable files to a USB drive or another location you control.
- Record app preferences, add-on lists, license information, and the account used to sign in.
- Keep the Windows account password and any app-specific credentials available before Reset.
- Ensure the computer remains powered during DISM, SFC, uninstall, and reinstall operations.
- After each change, launch the app before making the next change; this identifies which step resolved or altered the behavior.
Does Windows 10 still receive support for app-launch problems?
Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. The repair procedures above can still explain and address an existing installation, but an unresolved problem should also be weighed against moving to a Windows release that remains supported. Check the edition and hardware requirements of any newer release before planning a migration, and keep a verified backup.

Frequently asked questions
Will a Windows restart delete my app data?
No. Restarting Windows closes processes and reloads the operating system; it does not perform the data deletion associated with Reset. Data loss becomes a concern when you reset, uninstall, or use an app’s own cleanup command.
Why does an app work for one Windows account but not another?
Packaged apps are registered per user, so a package can exist on the computer while its registration is missing or damaged for one account. Re-register it from a non-elevated PowerShell session belonging to the affected user, and have an administrator inspect all-user packages when necessary.
Can DISM and SFC repair a broken game’s files?
They repair Windows image and protected system-file corruption, not the game’s own content. If only one game fails, use its launcher or installer repair and reinstall process after checking the Windows steps that apply to its installation type.
What should I record before contacting an administrator?
Note whether the app is a Store or desktop installation, the exact behavior at launch, the time it happened, and any event IDs or error codes from Application, System, AppXDeploymentServer, TWinUI, or AppModel-Runtime logs. Also report whether Repair, Reset, reinstall, and the DISM/SFC sequence changed the symptom.
