If Assassin’s Creed Odyssey crashes on PS5, start with updates, a restart, and a check that the game is fully installed. Then test whether the problem follows one save, a physical disc, or USB extended storage. Reinstalling and PlayStation’s Safe Mode options come later; the right support route depends on whether other games crash too.
First, identify what is crashing
Before changing anything, note the error code, what you were doing when the crash occurred, and the steps that reproduce it. Record whether Odyssey closes to the PS5 home screen or the entire console shuts down. Also note whether other games crash, whether the problem happens with one save or a fresh start, and whether the game is on internal or USB extended storage. PlayStation asks users reporting game-start problems to provide the error or message, a detailed description, and reproduction steps; screenshots or video can help where possible (PlayStation game launch troubleshooting).
Try the low-risk checks first
- Install available updates. Check Odyssey for a game update, then install available PS5 system software updates. Restart the console after updating. PlayStation includes updates and a restart in its troubleshooting guidance (PlayStation game freezes or crashes).
- Confirm installation is complete. If you have the digital edition, make sure the download and installation have finished before launching the game. An incomplete installation is a reason to wait or reinstall, not evidence of a particular game defect (PlayStation game launch troubleshooting).
- Move the game to internal storage if it is on USB extended storage. PlayStation advises moving a game from USB extended storage to the PS5 console storage when troubleshooting crashes. This is a diagnostic step, not proof that USB storage caused the problem (PlayStation game freezes or crashes).
- If you use a disc, inspect and gently clean it. Check for visible damage and wipe the disc with a clean, soft cloth. This step applies only to the physical edition; it cannot address a digital installation (PlayStation disc and crash guidance).
Test whether the save or disc is involved
Try starting from the beginning without the existing save, as PlayStation recommends for checking possible save corruption. If the game works from a fresh start but crashes with one save, that points to a save-specific possibility; it does not prove the save is corrupted. Avoid deleting your only copy of saved data just to run this test (PlayStation game freezes or crashes).
If you use a physical disc and the same disc continues to fail after the basic checks, PlayStation advises contacting the retailer about a replacement. If the problem occurs with a digital copy, disc cleaning and replacement do not apply.

Reinstall, then consider Safe Mode
If the simpler checks do not help, delete and reinstall the game. PlayStation lists reinstalling as a troubleshooting step for both game crashes and certain launch errors (PlayStation game freezes or crashes; PS5 error code CE-109573-5).
For trouble that persists, PlayStation’s guidance includes clearing the PS5 cache and rebuilding the database in Safe Mode. Follow PlayStation’s official Safe Mode instructions for the steps and menu labels (PlayStation game launch troubleshooting). For error CE-109573-5 specifically, PlayStation describes it as an error when starting a game and recommends restarting, reinstalling, rebuilding the database, and updating system software if the problem remains (PlayStation CE-109573-5 guidance). Do not apply that code’s meaning to a different error.

A factory reset is not an appropriate first troubleshooting step: PlayStation warns that resetting erases data stored on the console. If support directs you to reset later, back up game data first (PlayStation game freezes or crashes).
Choose support based on whether other games crash
- Only Odyssey crashes: Contact Ubisoft about a possible title-specific issue. Include the error code, whether the crash closes the game or shuts down the console, and steps that reproduce it. PlayStation directs users to the publisher when an issue affects one game (PlayStation game freezes or crashes).
- Several games crash: Contact PlayStation support and use its repair guidance; repeated failures across titles may indicate a console issue. Include the same error and reproduction details (PlayStation game freezes or crashes).
Is there a confirmed PS5-wide Odyssey crash problem?
The official sources cited here do not confirm a general, current PS5 crash defect for Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. That does not rule out an individual game, save, disc, installation, or console problem; it means there is no basis to say that every PS5 copy is affected or that one fix is guaranteed.

Odyssey is a PS4 title played on PS5. Ubisoft’s 1.3.0 patch notes, published May 22, 2019, say the update “Addressed an issue creating crashes on loading when storing the game in MS storage systems” and “Improved performance and stability on PS4” (Ubisoft’s 1.3.0 patch notes). Those are historical PS4 notes; they do not establish the cause of a present-day PS5 crash or show that the same storage issue remains. PlayStation Store’s Australia listing identifies the game as a PS4 title (PlayStation Store Australia listing).
