If an audio diagnostic shows 0X800700057, first check the digits: Microsoft’s Windows audio and update guidance uses 0x80070057 (without the extra zero before 57). That code means an invalid argument or a related configuration, permission, file, driver, or update problem; it does not prove that a speaker or headset has failed. Select the correct output, disable audio enhancements, run the audio troubleshooter, and then follow the branch that matches your symptom: missing device, post-update failure, microphone-only failure, or an error shown by Windows Update.
What does audio error 0x80070057 mean?
0x80070057 is a contextual Windows error value. Microsoft describes the related invalid-argument result as “One of the arguments passed in was invalid.” In Windows Update guidance, the same value can accompany corrupted files, permission problems, or incorrect system configuration. An audio tool may therefore display it when Windows cannot use an audio setting, endpoint, driver, or permission; the number alone does not identify a defective speaker, headset, sound card, or microphone.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The spelling matters because 0X800700057, as written in the question, has an extra zero. Read the code directly from the dialog, Get Help result, or diagnostic report before searching for a fix. If the message actually says a different value, use that value instead of the steps below.
Which troubleshooting path matches your symptom?
Use the symptom and trigger to choose a branch. Do not apply Windows Update repairs merely because an audio diagnostic happens to show the same hexadecimal code.

| What you see | Start with | Why this path fits |
|---|---|---|
| The speaker or headphone is listed, but there is no sound anywhere | Output selection, mute and volume, enhancements, then the audio troubleshooter | Windows can see an endpoint, so basic routing and processing settings are the first checks. |
| There is no output device, or the expected device is missing | Device Manager, hidden-device view, hardware rescan, and the exact manufacturer driver | A missing endpoint commonly indicates a disabled, undetected, or incompatible driver. |
| Audio stopped immediately after a Windows update | Install pending updates, update or roll back the audio driver, and restart audio services | The timing points to a changed driver or service state; rollback is available only when a previous driver remains installed. |
| Only recording or microphone input fails | Windows microphone privacy and the affected app’s permission | Input access can be blocked independently of speaker playback. |
| The code appears in Windows Update, not an audio tool | Windows Update troubleshooting, SFC, restart, and storage checks | The update branch addresses update files and servicing rather than audio routing. |
How do I fix 0x80070057 when the output device is listed but silent?
When Windows lists the intended speaker or headphones, work through these checks in order. Test a sound after each major change so you know which setting altered the result.
Select the intended output and check every volume control
- In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Sound. Under Output, select the speakers, headphones, monitor, or other device you actually want to use.
- In Windows 10, open Settings > System > Sound and use the output-device selector. Settings labels can vary by build.
- Make sure the master volume is above zero and mute is off. Open the volume mixer and check the affected game, media player, browser, or communications app because an application can have its own level or mute state.
- Check physical mute buttons, headset controls, monitor volume, and powered-speaker switches. If the selected endpoint changes when you plug in a headset, select it again explicitly.
If the device is selected and both system and application controls are audible but playback still fails, continue with enhancements and the troubleshooter rather than repeatedly changing the volume.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

Microsoft notes that audio enhancements can cause audio issues. In the selected output’s advanced properties, set Audio enhancements to Off. On older layouts, open Sound Control Panel > Playback > select the device > Properties > Enhancements, then disable all listed enhancements. Close and reopen the application before testing again; the change is reversible.
Run the built-in audio troubleshooter
- On Windows 11, open the Get Help app and start the automated Audio troubleshooter. Follow its prompts for the output that is failing.
- On older Windows layouts, open Settings’ troubleshooters and run Audio or Playing audio, depending on the build.
- Apply a suggested change only if it matches the device you selected, then play a system sound and test the original application.
A troubleshooter result is a diagnostic clue, not proof that the hardware is healthy or that every audio path has been repaired. If the device disappears from Output after this step, switch to the missing-device branch.

How do I fix the error when Windows cannot find my speakers or headphones?
A missing output device requires Device Manager and a model-specific driver, not just a volume adjustment.
Enable, reveal, and rescan the audio device
- Press
Windows key + X, open Device Manager, and expand Sound, video and game controllers. - If the expected audio device appears disabled, right-click it and choose Enable device. Test playback after Windows finishes enabling it.
- If it is not listed, choose View > Show hidden devices. A hidden or greyed entry can reveal a previously installed endpoint; enable it when that option is available.
- Choose Action > Scan for hardware changes. Windows will rescan connected hardware and may repopulate the controller.
- Restart Windows and check Settings > System > Sound again.
If Device Manager shows an unknown device, a warning icon, or no audio controller after the rescan, continue with the exact driver rather than installing a random package.
Install the exact manufacturer driver
- Identify the computer model or the installed sound-card model. Use the PC or sound-card manufacturer’s support site and locate the audio package for that exact model.
- Match the package to your Windows edition and architecture. A driver for another model or Windows version can leave the device missing or incompatible.
- Install the package, complete any requested restart, and then confirm that the device appears under Sound, video and game controllers.
- Return to Sound settings, select the device as Output, and test both a system sound and the application that originally failed.
Windows’ generic driver may provide basic playback, but the manufacturer package is the appropriate choice when the device is missing or the installed driver is incompatible. Keep the installer for the exact model in case you need to restore it after later troubleshooting.
What should I do if audio failed immediately after Windows Update?
A failure that began right after an update calls for an update-aware driver and service check. The timing does not prove that the update is the only cause, so verify the device and output selection first.

Install pending updates, then update the audio driver
- Open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, install applicable updates, and restart when prompted.
- In Device Manager, expand Sound, video and game controllers, right-click the audio device, and choose Update driver. Follow the available search or installation prompts.
- Restart Windows even if the installer does not request it. Recheck the selected output and test playback.
Roll back only when a previous driver exists
- In Device Manager, right-click the audio device and choose Properties.
- Open the Driver tab. If Roll Back Driver is available, select it, provide a reason if Windows asks, and restart.
- If the button is unavailable, Windows has no previous driver version to restore. Use the exact manufacturer driver instead of forcing a rollback.
Rollback is most useful when the symptom began directly after a driver change and the previous package is still present. It is not a general repair for every 0x80070057 report.
How do I restart the Windows audio services?
Restarting the audio services can clear a service-state problem after a driver or update change. This does not replace installing a missing driver.

Windows key + R, typeservices.msc, and press Enter. - Find Windows Audio, right-click it, and choose Restart. If Restart is unavailable, choose Start when offered.
- Repeat for Windows Audio Endpoint Builder.
- Also check Remote Procedure Call (RPC). It is a Windows dependency; do not change its startup configuration casually, but restart it only when Windows permits and the service is running.
- Close Services, select the intended output again, and test playback in more than one application.
If a service stops again immediately, note that behavior and return to Device Manager and the manufacturer driver branch. Repeated service restarts without correcting the underlying driver or configuration will not provide a lasting fix.
How do I fix 0x80070057 when only the microphone fails?
When speakers play normally but recording fails, check privacy access in both Windows and the application. A Microsoft user report describes a post-update recording symptom that was resolved by enabling microphone access, but that report is not a universal diagnosis.

- In Windows 11, open Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone. In Windows 10, open Settings > Privacy > Microphone.
- Turn on Microphone access and Let apps access your microphone. If Windows shows a separate desktop-app permission, enable it for the affected program.
- Open the application’s own audio or privacy settings and select the intended microphone. Some programs remember a disconnected headset or a different input.
- Close and reopen the application after changing permission. Test with a second recording application to determine whether the failure is system-wide or limited to one program.
If the microphone is missing from Windows’ input list, use the Device Manager and exact-driver steps above, substituting the input device for the output device.
What if 0x80070057 appears during Windows Update itself?
Use this branch only when Windows Update displays the code. An audio diagnostic showing the same value does not, by itself, require update-file repairs.
- Restart Windows and open Settings > Windows Update. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter available for your version.
- Open an elevated Command Prompt or Windows Terminal and run
sfc /scannow. Wait for verification to finish, then restart if Windows requests it. - Check the system drive for adequate available storage and remove or move files only when you can do so safely.
- Try Windows Update again. If the update error remains, record the exact code and the update name before seeking further Windows servicing support.
System File Checker and the update troubleshooter address system-file or update conditions; they are not substitutes for selecting an audio endpoint or installing an audio driver when the code came from an audio tool.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How can I confirm that the audio repair worked?
Confirmation should cover the path that originally failed, not just one successful click.

Does the Windows version change these steps?
The missing-device and post-update procedures apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11, but labels and troubleshooting entry points can differ by build. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; an unsupported installation may not receive free Windows Update support, so confirm your version and support status when an update-related repair does not complete.
Do not download drivers from unofficial mirrors simply because a search result promises a faster fix. Use the exact PC or sound-card manufacturer package, preserve the model and Windows-version match, and restart after installation.
As an optional shortcut after trying the manual steps, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan more than 100 devices, identify outdated, corrupted, or missing drivers, install official drivers, show current and recommended versions, and provide driver backup, restore, and scheduled scans. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7 with a 2-day free trial and requires a subscription afterward; results vary, and no tool repairs every audio problem.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can 0x80070057 physically damage my speakers or headphones?
No. The hexadecimal value describes a Windows argument or configuration failure, not an electrical condition. Stop troubleshooting and inspect the hardware separately only if there is physical damage, a burning smell, or another clear safety issue.
Why does sound work in one application but not another?
Applications can retain their own mute, volume, output-device, or microphone-permission choices. Compare the affected program with a second app, then select the intended endpoint inside the program that fails.
Recommended Free Tools
What information should I record before asking for support?
Write down the exact code spelling, Windows version and build, computer or sound-card model, whether the device appears in Sound settings and Device Manager, and whether the problem began after an update. Also note which output or input and which applications fail.
Why is the Roll Back Driver button missing?
Windows shows that option only when a previous driver version is available. If it is absent, install the current package made for your exact PC or sound-card model and Windows version instead.
