If Windows shows 0X080070057 while audio troubleshooting fails, the code is probably mistyped: Microsoft documents 0x80070057, not the nine-digit version. It means ERROR_INVALID_PARAMETER—“The parameter is incorrect”—and does not identify a particular speaker, microphone, sound card, or headset. The practical fix is to identify whether playback, recording, device detection, or Windows Update is failing, then work through the matching Windows troubleshooter, endpoint and privacy settings, exact-model audio driver, service state, and system-repair steps.
Do the reversible checks first. Driver rollback, uninstall, or update removal can be useful when the failure began immediately after an update, but they should follow a restore point or another recovery option where possible.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat does audio error 0x80070057 mean?
0x80070057 is Microsoft’s hexadecimal form of ERROR_INVALID_PARAMETER. In plain language, a Windows component received a parameter it could not accept. The message is generic: it describes a failed request, not the physical component that caused it.
That distinction matters for audio. A speaker-recognition failure, an Audio Recording Diagnostic failure, a missing endpoint, a microphone permission problem, a driver mismatch, and a Windows Update corruption issue can all present differently while exposing the same code. A headset replacement is therefore not a reliable first response.

Which symptom is failing: playback, recording, detection, or Windows Update?
Classify the failure before changing anything. The branch determines which test can produce useful evidence and prevents you from changing a driver when the real issue is a permission or update problem.
Playback or speakers
Choose this branch when Windows or an application cannot produce sound, the wrong output is selected, or a speaker test fails. Note whether the device is visible in the output list and whether the failure affects every application or only one.
Recording or microphone
Use this branch when a microphone test, voice recorder, game chat, or Windows Audio Recording Diagnostic fails. Check whether the input meter moves at all and whether the microphone appears in the input list.
Device detection
This branch applies when the expected output or input is absent, appears with a warning symbol, or disappears after a restart or hardware change. Device Manager can show whether Windows has a usable driver.

Windows Update or installation
If the code appears while installing Windows updates, components, or drivers rather than during a sound test, prioritize update and system-file repair. Audio may be an indirect symptom of that corruption.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallHow do I run the Windows audio troubleshooters?
Start with Microsoft’s built-in checks because they test configuration and service conditions without making an irreversible change.
- Open Settings and go to the sound section. On current Windows releases this is usually System > Sound; older releases may expose similar controls through System > Troubleshoot or the classic Control Panel.
- For a speaker problem, select or run Playing Audio. For a microphone problem, run Recording Audio. Follow the prompts and apply a suggested correction only after reading what it will change.
- If speech recognition, dictation, or voice commands are involved, also run the Speech troubleshooter.
- Restart and repeat the same test that produced the code. Record whether the endpoint is now detected, whether a test tone works, and whether the error returns.
A troubleshooter result is a clue, not proof that the underlying hardware is defective or repaired. If it reports that no change was made, continue with the branch that matches your symptom.
How do I check the selected output, input, and microphone permissions?
Windows can send sound to a different endpoint or block recording even when the driver is functioning. Verify these settings before reinstalling anything.
Verify the output endpoint
- Open Settings > System > Sound.
- Under output, select the speakers, headset, monitor, dock, or other device you actually want to use.
- Open the selected device’s properties and check that it is not disabled or muted. If several similar entries exist, test each one briefly.
HDMI, Bluetooth, USB, and analog outputs can appear as separate endpoints. A successful test on one endpoint does not prove that another endpoint or its driver is healthy.

Verify the input endpoint
- In Settings > System > Sound, open the input section.
- Select the intended microphone and speak while watching the input meter.
- Check the application’s own audio settings as well; a game, chat client, or recorder may select a different microphone than Windows.
Check microphone privacy
- Open Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone on Windows 11, or the corresponding Microphone Privacy Settings page on older releases.
- Allow access to the microphone for the device and for apps. Enable desktop-app access if the affected program is a traditional desktop application.
- Close and reopen the recording application, then test again.
A Microsoft Q&A participant reported that enabling microphone access fixed one post-update recording case. That is a reported fix, not a guarantee for every 0x80070057 occurrence.
How do I update, roll back, or reinstall the exact audio driver?
Use the driver for the exact computer, motherboard, or audio-device model. A generic package for a similar model can leave the endpoint unusable or expose the same parameter error.
Find the model and current driver
- Press Windows key + X and open Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers. Also check Audio inputs and outputs if the endpoint itself is listed there.
- Open the device’s Properties, note the manufacturer, model, driver date, and version, and look for a warning icon.
- Confirm the computer or motherboard model from its label, purchase documentation, or Windows system information before downloading anything.
Install the manufacturer’s package
- Use the PC or device maker’s official support-download page for the exact model and Windows edition.
- Choose the audio driver that matches the hardware and operating-system release. Do not substitute a package merely because its name contains the same audio brand.
- Install it, restart, and retest the same playback or recording operation.
Updating through Device Manager can check Windows’ available package, but the exact-model OEM package is the more specific path recommended in the Microsoft Q&A guidance.
Roll back after a recent update
- In Device Manager, open the audio device’s Properties > Driver tab.
- If Roll Back Driver is available and the failure began after a driver or Windows update, use it and restart.
- Test before making another change. If the rollback resolves the issue, record the driver version and update date so you can avoid reinstalling the failing package.
Uninstall and let Windows redetect the device
- Save your work and close audio applications.
- In Device Manager, right-click the affected audio device and choose Uninstall device. Read the confirmation carefully; do not remove unrelated hardware.
- Restart Windows. Windows should attempt to detect the device and reinstall an available driver.
- If the device still fails, install the exact-model package from the manufacturer and test again.
If the OEM page offers an older compatible package, trying that version can be reasonable when the problem tracks a newer driver. Keep a record of every version so you can reverse the change.

How do I restore Windows Audio when the service is disabled?
The audio troubleshooting guidance specifically calls out restoring Windows Audio. Service names and Settings paths differ between Windows releases, so verify the state rather than relying on one fixed menu layout.

- Open the service’s properties and check its startup setting. Do not choose a setting that prevents Windows from starting the service automatically unless your administrator or a documented repair procedure requires it.
- Restart Windows and test playback or recording.
If the service refuses to start, note the exact message and check whether a recent update, driver change, or system-file problem preceded it. Avoid changing unrelated services at random; that can create additional startup failures.
How do I repair Windows Update or corrupted system files?
Use this path when 0x80070057 appears during Windows Update or installation, when several Windows components fail, or when the audio problem began with a broader system error. Run the commands from an elevated Command Prompt—right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
Run System File Checker
- Open an elevated Command Prompt.
- Run
sfc /scannowand wait for verification to finish. - Restart if SFC reports that it repaired files, then repeat the operation that failed.
Microsoft lists SFC as part of its repair path for some 0x80070057 update or installation failures. The result may say that no integrity violations were found, that files were repaired, or that some files could not be repaired; retain that result if you need further support.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Use DISM for component-store corruption
- In the same elevated Command Prompt, run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth. - Allow the operation to complete; interrupting it can leave the repair unfinished.
- Restart Windows. If Microsoft’s current instructions call for it, run SFC again after DISM and then retry Windows Update or the audio test.
DISM repairs the Windows component store; it does not install the correct OEM audio driver or select the right endpoint. Treat it as a system-integrity step, not a substitute for driver and privacy checks.
What should I do if the problem started after an update?
Timing is valuable evidence, but it does not prove the update is the sole cause. The documented audio cases include failures after Windows updates, so compare the failure date with the update and driver history.

- Open Windows Update history and Device Manager’s driver details. Record the dates and versions that changed immediately before the audio failure.
- Create an appropriate restore point or confirm another recovery method is available.
- For a driver-specific change, try Roll Back Driver first. For a Windows update that clearly coincides with the failure, use the available update-removal or recovery option in Windows settings, following Microsoft’s current instructions.
- Restart and test the same endpoint. If the issue remains, reinstall the exact-model OEM driver and continue with the system-repair path.
Do not remove multiple updates or drivers at once: changing one variable preserves evidence and makes recovery easier.

The table matches the remedy to the symptom, timing, reversibility, and evidence behind it.
| Situation | First action | Reversibility | Specificity | Evidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Speakers or headphones do not play sound | Run Playing Audio, then verify the selected output endpoint | High; settings can be changed back | Generic configuration check | Microsoft audio troubleshooting guidance |
| Recording diagnostic or microphone fails | Run Recording Audio, check the input endpoint, and review microphone privacy | High | Targets recording permissions and endpoint selection | Microsoft Q&A guidance; one permission fix is community-reported |
| Audio device is missing or has a warning icon | Inspect Device Manager and install the exact-model OEM driver | Moderate; keep the previous package available | Hardware-model specific | Microsoft Q&A guidance |
| Failure began after a driver update | Use Device Manager’s Roll Back Driver, then test | Moderate and normally reversible | Targets the changed driver | Standard Windows recovery path described in audio guidance |
| Failure began after a Windows update | Check update history, create recovery protection, and consider documented rollback or removal | Moderate to low; recovery preparation matters | Targets a recent system change | Audio Q&A cases report post-update failures; not every case has that cause |
| Windows Update or installation itself returns 0x80070057 | Run elevated SFC and, where Microsoft’s current guidance supports it, DISM | Moderate; commands alter system files | Windows component repair rather than audio-specific repair | Microsoft repair documentation |
What common mistakes make this error harder to fix?
- Assuming the code names a bad speaker: it is a generic invalid-parameter error, so verify the symptom and endpoint first.
- Installing a driver for the wrong model: match the complete PC, motherboard, or device model and Windows edition.
- Ignoring privacy controls: a microphone can appear healthy while applications are blocked from accessing it.
- Changing several variables together: update one setting or driver, restart, and retest before proceeding.
- Running repair commands in a normal prompt: SFC and DISM require an elevated Command Prompt for the documented repair path.
- Deleting a driver without a recovery plan: note the current version and ensure you can reinstall the OEM package before uninstalling.
- Treating a community report as a guarantee: an individual permission or rollback success does not establish a universal fix.
As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan more than 100 devices for outdated, corrupted, or missing drivers, install official drivers, show current and recommended versions, and provide backup, restore, and scheduled scans. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, with a 2-day free trial and no credit card before subscription; results vary and no utility repairs every audio failure.
When should I stop troubleshooting and seek model-specific support?
Escalate when the exact-model driver, endpoint checks, service verification, and applicable system repairs do not restore audio, or when Device Manager reports a persistent hardware error. Provide the support technician with the corrected code, the original symptom branch, the computer or motherboard model, driver versions, update dates, and the results of SFC or DISM. That information is more actionable than reporting only “audio does not work.”
If the device is absent from firmware-level hardware lists, fails on another operating system, or has a physical connection fault, Windows settings may not be able to correct it. The 0x80070057 code alone cannot distinguish those situations.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can 0x80070057 damage my speakers or microphone?
No. The code describes Windows rejecting a parameter; it is not a hardware-damage diagnosis. Stop using a device only if you also notice heat, burning smells, electrical noise, or visible physical damage.
Recommended Free Tools
Why does audio work in one app but fail in another?
Applications can choose different input or output endpoints and can have their own permission or mute controls. Compare the app’s selected device with Windows Sound settings and test with a second application before changing the driver.
Should I use a generic Windows driver or the computer maker’s package?
The exact-model package from the PC, motherboard, or device maker is the more targeted choice because it is matched to that hardware. A generic package can be useful for testing, but keep the OEM installer available so you can restore the supported version.
What information should I include when asking Microsoft or the manufacturer for help?
Include the corrected code, whether playback or recording is affected, the endpoint name, Windows edition and build, computer model, audio-driver version and date, recent update history, and the precise troubleshooter or repair result. This lets support separate a permission issue from a driver or component-store problem.
