If Windows reports that the Audio Service is not running, start with the built-in Audio troubleshooter, then verify the selected output, restart Windows Audio and its dependencies, and repair the audio driver if necessary. The same “no sound” symptom can come from a stopped service, a failed dependency (including Error 1068), an incorrect output route, a missing device, or a driver that no longer works with your Windows version. Follow the branches below in order: the first checks are quick and reversible, while driver removal and manufacturer downloads are later steps.

What does “Audio Service Not Running” mean?

It means Windows cannot currently provide a working audio path, but the message does not identify one single fault. Windows Audio is the primary service; Windows Audio Endpoint Builder creates the speaker, headphone, and other audio endpoints that applications use, while Remote Procedure Call (RPC) is a general Windows dependency used in the restart sequence.

Different symptoms point to different branches:

  • Service stopped: Windows Audio or Endpoint Builder is not running and can usually be restarted from Services.
  • Dependency failure: Windows Audio refuses to start because another required service failed, often shown as “Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start.”
  • Wrong output: Windows is playing to a monitor, dock, Bluetooth device, or another output instead of the speakers or headphones you are using.
  • Missing device: The audio hardware or its driver is disabled, hidden, or no longer detected in Device Manager.
  • One-app routing: System audio works, but a particular application is muted or assigned to a different output in Volume mixer.

The order below moves from Microsoft’s lowest-risk diagnostics to service inspection and then driver repair, so you do not remove a working driver to solve a simple routing problem.

How do I run the Windows audio troubleshooter?

On Windows 11, Microsoft’s recommended first action is the automated Audio troubleshooter in the Get Help app. It runs diagnostics and can apply repairs without requiring you to change service settings manually.

  1. Open Get Help from the Start menu.
  2. Search for the audio or sound problem and choose the Audio troubleshooter offered by the app.
  3. Allow the diagnostic checks to run, and approve a repair when Get Help presents one.
  4. Play a test sound after it finishes. If the message remains, continue with the output and service checks below.

Get Help is the current Windows 11 workflow. Microsoft’s guidance also covers Windows 10, but support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025; identify your Windows version before following an older-looking path.

How do I check that Windows is using the correct speakers or headphones?

In Settings > System > Sound, select the output device you actually want to hear. Raise its volume, make sure mute is off, and turn Audio enhancements off temporarily if they are interfering with playback.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the physical output you are using

Expand the output list and select the connected speakers, headset, or headphones. A monitor can appear as an audio output even when it has no speakers; selecting it leaves Windows apparently playing sound with nothing audible. If you have several displays, docks, or headsets connected, test each listed device rather than assuming the first one is correct.

Remove enhancement-related interference

Open the selected device’s sound properties and switch Audio enhancements off, then test again. Enhancements can alter the processing path; disabling them is reversible and helps distinguish an effect-processing problem from a service or driver failure.

How do I restart Windows Audio and its dependencies?

Use the Services console to restart the three services in Microsoft’s sequence: Windows Audio, Windows Audio Endpoint Builder, and Remote Procedure Call (RPC). A service that shows Start rather than Restart is stopped and should be started.

  1. Press Windows key + R, type services.msc, and press Enter. You can also search for Services from Start.
  2. Find Windows Audio. Right-click it and choose Restart. If the menu offers Start, choose that instead.
  3. Find Windows Audio Endpoint Builder and restart or start it in the same way.
  4. Find Remote Procedure Call (RPC) and restart it only if the console allows the action; otherwise confirm that it is running.
  5. Close Services and test audio from the application that was silent.

Windows Audio is the service that handles the main audio stream, Endpoint Builder supplies the endpoints applications select, and RPC is a general Windows dependency. Restarting all three addresses a service state problem without changing the installed driver.

What should I do when Windows Audio will not start or shows Error 1068?

Error 1068 means a dependency service or group failed to start. Do not repeatedly restart Windows Audio or import an arbitrary registry file; inspect the dependency chain and identify the service that is actually failing.

Inspect the dependency list

  1. In Services, right-click Windows Audio and choose Properties.
  2. Open the Dependencies tab and note every service listed there.
  3. Check the status of the listed services, especially Windows Audio Endpoint Builder and Multimedia Class Scheduler, which Microsoft Q&A guidance identifies for this symptom.
  4. For Windows Audio and the related audio services, open each service’s properties and set Startup type to Automatic when that option is available.
  5. Start the dependency that is stopped, then try Windows Audio again. If the dependency immediately stops or produces its own error, follow that service or driver branch instead of forcing Windows Audio to run.

A dependency that cannot remain running usually indicates a broader Windows or driver problem. Record the exact service name and error before moving to updates and Device Manager; that detail determines which branch is relevant.

How do I repair an audio driver that stopped working?

Install pending Windows updates first, then use Device Manager to update or reinstall the audio device. Microsoft describes Windows Update as the recommended way to obtain the latest audio drivers; if Windows Update does not provide a working driver, use the exact model-specific package from your PC or sound-card manufacturer.

Install pending Windows updates

Open Windows Update in Settings, install available updates, and restart when prompted. Test sound after the restart before making a driver change. This can restore a compatible driver or a service component that was missing after an update.

Update the device in Device Manager

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
  3. Right-click the audio device and choose Update driver.
  4. Allow Windows to search for an available driver, then restart and test playback.

Uninstall and reinstall when updating fails

If updating does not help, right-click the same device, choose Uninstall device, and restart Windows. Windows may reinstall the device automatically. When appropriate, the generic High Definition Audio Device driver can restore basic output; for the best match, install the exact driver supplied for your computer or sound card and your Windows version.

Use only the support page for the exact PC or sound-card model when downloading a manufacturer driver. A package for a similar model or a different Windows version can leave the service unable to create a usable endpoint.

How do I roll back an audio driver after Windows Update?

If audio stopped immediately after a Windows Update, try the previous driver before uninstalling anything. Rollback is available only when Windows retained an earlier driver.

  1. In Device Manager, expand Sound, video and game controllers.
  2. Right-click the affected audio device and choose Properties.
  3. Open the Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver if the button is available.
  4. Confirm the reason if Windows asks, restart the computer, and test the original output.

If Roll Back Driver is unavailable, continue with Windows Update, the uninstall-and-restart procedure, or the manufacturer’s model-specific driver rather than trying to recreate an older package manually.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if the audio device is missing from Device Manager?

Use Device Manager’s detection tools before assuming the hardware has failed. A disabled or hidden device can be restored without replacing hardware.

  1. Open Device Manager and look under Sound, video and game controllers. If the device is listed but disabled, use the available Enable device command.
  2. Choose View > Show hidden devices and check whether the audio device appears dimmed.
  3. Choose Action > Scan for hardware changes and wait for Windows to rescan.
  4. Restart and check the list again.
  5. If the device still does not appear, download the current driver for the exact computer or sound-card model and Windows version from the manufacturer’s support site.

A missing entry is a detection or driver branch, not proof that restarting Windows Audio will solve the problem. Keep the device model and Windows edition in front of you when selecting a replacement driver.

Why is only one application silent?

If system sounds work but one game, player, or communication app is quiet, check per-application routing rather than treating it as a system-wide service failure. Windows can assign an individual app a different output or mute it in Volume mixer.

  1. Open Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer.
  2. Find the affected application and verify that its volume is not muted.
  3. Set the app’s output to the same speakers or headphones selected as the intended system output.
  4. Close and reopen the application so it requests the endpoint again.
  5. If it remains silent, restart Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder, then update the audio driver if needed.

This branch is especially important when a game is silent while browser audio or Windows test sounds work: the service may already be healthy, with only the app’s route or volume needing correction.

What Windows version should I identify before troubleshooting?

Check whether the computer runs Windows 11 or Windows 10 before following menu paths or downloading a driver. The Microsoft audio guidance covers both versions, but Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Windows 11 users should prefer the current Get Help Audio troubleshooter; all users should match a downloaded driver to the exact Windows version and hardware model.

What should I avoid while fixing the service?

  • Do not import registry files from an unknown source to force a service to start.
  • Do not keep restarting Windows Audio when a dependency stops immediately; inspect the dependency and its error instead.
  • Do not remove a driver before checking the selected output and Volume mixer, because a routing mistake does not require driver repair.
  • Do not install a driver intended for a similar computer or a different Windows edition.
  • Do not treat a USB adapter or external sound card as a documented fix for a stopped Windows Audio service; hardware replacement belongs only in a separate diagnosis after the device-detection and driver branches.

There is no reliable percentage or success-rate figure for this message as a whole: “no sound” combines several distinct failure modes. The correct endpoint, service state, dependency status, and driver detection result are more useful than a generic claim that one fix works for everyone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a monitor cause the “Audio Service Not Running” message?

A monitor without speakers can explain silence when it is selected as the output, but it does not normally cause Windows Audio itself to stop. Check the selected output before changing services so you can separate a routing problem from a service failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I use a third-party driver utility before Device Manager?

No. Use Windows Update and Device Manager first, then the exact PC or sound-card manufacturer driver if necessary. A utility should not replace model-specific support instructions or the built-in rollback option.

What does it mean if Roll Back Driver is missing?

Windows does not have an earlier driver stored for that device, so the rollback action is unavailable. Use the uninstall-and-restart procedure or obtain the correct current package from the manufacturer instead of trying to manufacture a rollback.

Will an external USB sound card repair a stopped Windows Audio service?

Not as a documented service repair. An external adapter is a conditional hardware fallback only after Windows cannot detect or operate the internal device and the service, dependency, and driver checks have been completed.
