The “Automatic Repair — Your PC did not start correctly” screen means Windows 11 failed to complete startup and opened the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). Start with Advanced options → Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Startup Repair → Restart. If the loop began after an update, driver, or app change, roll that change back instead. Keep your BitLocker recovery key available, and avoid Reset this PC or a reinstall until you have protected important files. The steps below move from the least disruptive recovery option to advanced commands and, only as a last resort, data-destructive recovery.

What does “Automatic Repair — Your PC did not start correctly” mean?

Windows has detected a startup failure and loaded WinRE rather than the normal desktop. You may see wording such as “Preparing Automatic Repair,” “Your PC did not start correctly,” or a screen that keeps returning to Automatic Repair. WinRE is a separate recovery system built into Windows 11; it provides tools for repairing boot files, undoing changes, starting in Safe Mode, restoring a previous system state, and resetting or reinstalling Windows.

Microsoft describes Startup Repair as “a Windows recovery tool that can fix certain system problems that might prevent Windows from starting.” It is designed for problems such as missing or damaged system files, corrupted boot configuration data (BCD), a damaged master boot record (MBR), incompatible drivers, and registry errors. It cannot repair every hardware failure or every type of crash, so a repeated loop is a sign to change tactics rather than run the same repair indefinitely.

What should I do before attempting a repair?

  • Find the BitLocker recovery key. An encrypted Windows 11 device can request this key before WinRE tools will run. Check the Microsoft account or organization records where the key was saved, and keep it available before selecting recovery options.
  • Disconnect nonessential hardware. Remove newly added USB devices, docks, external drives, printers, and expansion hardware. Leave the keyboard, mouse, display, and power connected.
  • Note what changed. If the failure followed Windows Update, a driver installation, a new app, or a hardware change, that timing determines the safest rollback.
  • Protect important files. Microsoft recommends backing up before recovery actions that can alter or remove data. If you can reach a backup environment or copy files from another computer, do that before resetting or reinstalling.

How do I run Startup Repair in Windows 11?

Startup Repair is the first manual fix because it is guided and normally targets startup components without asking you to delete personal files.

  1. On the blue Automatic Repair screen, select Advanced options.
  2. Choose Troubleshoot, then Advanced options.
  3. Select Startup Repair.
  4. Choose your Windows account if prompted, enter its password, and provide the BitLocker recovery key if requested.
  5. Select Restart when Windows finishes its scan.

The tool scans for startup problems and attempts repairs. If it cannot fix the issue, it displays a report. Record that report and any stop code or file name it identifies; those details can point to a driver, disk, or boot-configuration problem.

What if Startup Repair returns to the same screen?

Do not keep repeating Startup Repair without checking the trigger. Open Advanced options again and choose the rollback that matches the event that preceded the failure. If no rollback applies, continue with Safe Mode, hardware checks, or installation media.

Which recovery option should I choose after an update, driver, or app change?

Use the option that reverses the most likely cause while preserving as much data as possible. The timing of the failure is more useful than choosing tools at random.

If Windows Update preceded the loop

  1. Open Advanced options → Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Uninstall Updates.
  2. Choose the available update-removal option and follow the prompts.
  3. Restart and test Windows normally.

This path is appropriate when the machine worked until a recent Windows update. If the failure remains, return to WinRE and try another path rather than uninstalling updates repeatedly.

If a driver or application was installed immediately before the failure

Use System Restore when a restore point from before the change exists. In WinRE, select Troubleshoot → Advanced options → System Restore, choose a restore point, and confirm the rollback. System Restore changes system files, drivers, settings, and installed programs represented by the restore point; it does not roll back personal files.

Windows 11 version 24H2 and later may also show Point-in-time restore. This option uses a recent automatic restore point and can roll back apps, settings, and personal files. Read the confirmation screen carefully because its data scope is broader than System Restore.

If the change was a newly installed app

System Restore is usually the safer WinRE choice when the app itself cannot be removed from Safe Mode. After Windows starts, uninstall the app normally and obtain a compatible version from its publisher. If no suitable restore point exists, use Safe Mode to remove the app or its associated driver.

How can I open WinRE when the Automatic Repair screen never appears?

Windows should normally enter WinRE after repeated failed starts. You can trigger that process by interrupting startup twice.

  1. Turn on the PC and wait for the Windows logo or the manufacturer logo.
  2. Hold the physical power button until the computer shuts down.
  3. Start it again and repeat the forced shutdown at the logo.
  4. Start the PC a third time. Windows should display Automatic Repair; select Advanced options.

Use this method only to reach recovery. Repeatedly cutting power during normal operation can worsen file-system corruption, so stop once WinRE appears.

What if the built-in recovery partition is unavailable?

Create Windows 11 installation media on a bootable USB drive with another working PC. This gives you a separate way into WinRE when the installed recovery partition is damaged or missing.

  1. On a working computer, create official Windows 11 installation media on a USB flash drive.
  2. Connect that USB to the affected PC.
  3. Start the PC and use its firmware boot-menu key to select the USB drive. The key varies by manufacturer; consult the computer’s manual or on-screen startup prompt.
  4. When Windows Setup appears, choose Repair my PC, not Install now.
  5. Select Troubleshoot to open the same recovery tools, including Startup Repair, System Restore, Uninstall Updates, Startup Settings, and Command Prompt.

Booting from installation media does not itself reinstall Windows. Data loss occurs only if you later choose a reset, delete partitions, or run a clean installation.

How do I use Safe Mode and hardware checks for repeated crashes?

A stop code, sudden restart, or failure that began after hardware or driver work points beyond a simple boot-file problem. Microsoft attributes unexpected restarts to hardware, drivers, or software and recommends checking each category.

Start in Safe Mode

  1. From WinRE, select Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Startup Settings → Restart.
  2. After the restart, choose the Safe Mode option shown on screen. Use Safe Mode with Networking only when you need network access for a trusted update or driver source.
  3. If Windows starts in Safe Mode, remove recently added hardware, uninstall the most recent driver or application, and restart normally.

Check Device Manager

In Safe Mode, open Device Manager and look for warning icons. For a device added or updated just before the failure, use its driver properties to roll back or uninstall the driver, then restart. Do not remove devices you cannot identify; record the model and obtain the correct driver from the hardware manufacturer once Windows is stable.

Check free disk space and updates

A nearly full system drive can prevent updates and temporary startup operations from completing. Remove only files you recognize, empty temporary locations through Windows settings, and keep enough free space for Windows to operate. After the system starts normally, install current Windows updates and hardware drivers from trusted sources.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remove newly added hardware

Power the PC off, disconnect the newest internal or external component if practical, and try starting again. If removing it restores startup, leave it disconnected until you verify compatibility, firmware, and drivers.

When should I use Command Prompt in WinRE?

Command Prompt is for advanced users who can identify the Windows volume and understand the risk of changing boot data. Drive letters can differ in WinRE, so the volume that contains the Windows folder may not be C:. Confirm the correct letter before running a command.

A Microsoft Q&A community answer lists these commands for symptoms that suggest disk or boot-file corruption:

CHKDSK /f /r /b
bootrec /scanos
bootrec /rebuildbcd
bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot

Treat that list as community guidance, not a universal checklist. Run disk checking when storage errors are plausible, and use bootrec commands when boot configuration or boot-sector corruption is indicated. Incorrectly selecting a volume or rebuilding boot data can make recovery harder. If you cannot identify the Windows volume or interpret the output, stop and obtain qualified assistance rather than guessing.

How do I decide between System Restore, reset, and reinstall?

Choose the least disruptive option that addresses the likely cause. The table summarizes the practical trade-offs.

Option Best trigger Data effect Access path Skill and risk
Startup Repair Missing or damaged startup files, BCD, MBR, incompatible driver, or registry startup error Designed to preserve personal files Built-in WinRE or Repair my PC from installation media Guided; relatively low risk
Uninstall Updates Failure began after a Windows update Removes the selected update; personal files remain WinRE Advanced options Guided rollback
System Restore A suitable restore point exists before a driver, app, or system change Rolls back system files and settings, not personal files WinRE Advanced options Guided; depends on restore-point availability
Point-in-time restore Windows 11 version 24H2 or later offers a recent automatic restore point Can roll back apps, settings, and personal files WinRE when the option is available Guided but broader data impact
Safe Mode Driver, app, hardware, or stop-code investigation No reset by itself WinRE Startup Settings Guided diagnostics; manual cleanup required
Reset this PC Less disruptive recovery options failed Choose whether to keep personal files or remove everything WinRE reset path Major change; back up first
Reinstall from installation media Windows is unrecoverable and a clean start is necessary Removes everything when performed as a clean installation Bootable Windows 11 USB Highest data and configuration risk

What should I do if every repair option fails?

  1. Back up files before destructive recovery. Use a working computer, a bootable environment, or another method that can read the drive. Prioritize documents, saved games, photos, and authentication data.
  2. Try Safe Mode and hardware isolation. A repeated stop code may require replacing a failing component or correcting a driver rather than reinstalling Windows.
  3. Use Reset this PC only after understanding the choice. Windows can offer an option to keep personal files or an option that removes everything. Installed applications and many settings will need to be restored afterward.
  4. Use installation media for a clean reinstall only when necessary. A clean installation removes everything on the target Windows installation. Confirm backups, BitLocker access, and the correct edition before proceeding.
  5. Escalate when data is more valuable than experimentation. If the drive is making unusual noises, repeatedly disconnecting, or cannot be read, stop repair attempts and seek a qualified repair or data-recovery service.

As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements, invalid redirects, shared DLL files, settings that add CPU, RAM, or disk load, and app-crash logging. It also includes cleanup, privacy and vulnerability checks, and a real-time boost; it complements antivirus software rather than replacing it. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, offers a category-based free trial of at least two days, and then requires a subscription. Results vary, and no tool repairs every startup failure.

Why does Automatic Repair keep popping up after I restart?

A loop means the underlying startup fault remains or a recent change continues to fail during boot. Use the timing clues to select Uninstall Updates, System Restore, Point-in-time restore, Safe Mode, or hardware checks instead of restarting into the same repair screen repeatedly.

Can Automatic Repair delete my files?

Startup Repair, Uninstall Updates, and System Restore are intended as non-destructive recovery choices, although you should still back up important data. Point-in-time restore can roll back personal files, while Reset this PC and a clean reinstall can remove applications, settings, or all files depending on the option selected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need a BitLocker key to repair Windows 11?

Possibly. Microsoft notes that encrypted devices may require the BitLocker recovery key before WinRE tools can be used. Locate the key before beginning so you are not locked out of the recovery environment at a critical step.

Can I repair Windows 11 without another computer?

Yes, if the installed WinRE partition opens, you can use Startup Repair, rollback tools, Safe Mode, System Restore, and Command Prompt on the affected PC. If WinRE is missing or damaged, another working computer is needed to create installation media for the Repair my PC path.

Should I keep running Startup Repair until it works?

No. Startup Repair is appropriate for a first attempt, but repeated failure indicates that the cause may be an update, driver, application, hardware fault, disk problem, or damaged installation outside its scope. Move to the matching rollback or diagnostic branch and preserve data before reset or reinstall.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will Automatic Repair fix a blue-screen stop code?

It may repair startup components, but a recurring stop code often involves a driver, hardware device, software conflict, or insufficient disk space. Use Safe Mode, Device Manager, hardware removal, and free-space checks to identify that cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does “Preparing Automatic Repair” mean if it stays for a long time?

Windows is attempting to enter or run WinRE after failed starts. If it never reaches the options screen, use the two interrupted boots method to trigger WinRE, then select Advanced options.

Is Point-in-time restore available on every Windows 11 PC?

The available data identifies it for Windows 11 version 24H2 or later when the option is offered and an automatic restore point exists. Earlier versions or systems without a suitable restore point may show only the other recovery choices.

Can I use a Windows 11 USB to repair an installed copy without reinstalling?

Yes. Boot from the USB and select Repair my PC. That opens WinRE; choosing Install now or performing a clean installation is a separate action with different data consequences.
