Baldur’s Gate 3 Error 516 is a failed-save error, most often triggered after speaking with a merchant. The first fix to try is to load a save from before the error, open the merchant through the lower-left Trade button (or a controller’s Trade action), switch the window to Barter, exchange one cheap item, close the window, and save again. This workaround is especially associated with some older saves created around Patch 3. Mods can produce similar save-state problems, but they are not the only possible cause. If the merchant reset does not work, use Larian’s PC recovery sequence: protect the save folder, clear LevelCache, verify game files, test security software and cloud synchronization, then recreate the profile as a last resort.
What does Baldur’s Gate 3 Error 516 mean?
Error 516 means the game could not write a save successfully. It is a save-operation failure, not a message that every save in your campaign has been permanently destroyed. Players commonly see it immediately after trading with a merchant, when the game is trying to record both the conversation state and the transaction.

The strongest recurring explanation is a merchant interface opening in Trade mode instead of Barter mode. Reports are particularly common on existing saves from the Patch 3 period. A modded save may be affected as well, although community reports also describe the error on otherwise vanilla saves. Because there is no authoritative prevalence or success rate for Error 516, treat the barter change as a targeted workaround rather than a guaranteed cure.
Why does the error appear after I trade?
Some merchant interactions can be entered through a dialogue choice, while the lower-left interface also has a dedicated Trade button. On affected saves, the dialogue route may leave the merchant in a state that fails when the game tries to save. Switching that window to Barter and completing a small transaction can force the state to be written correctly.

Older saves and Patch 3-era behavior
Contemporaneous reports connect the problem with saves that already existed during the Patch 3 period. That does not mean every old save is damaged, nor that a new save on the current game build cannot fail. It means the age and history of the campaign are useful clues when choosing which save to test first.
What mods have to do with it
Mods can alter merchants, inventory, scripts, or the data stored in a save. Disabling or removing a mod in the original campaign can make the situation worse, so never experiment on the only copy of your profile. Test changes on a duplicate and keep the original load order and files available for rollback.

Preserve a recoverable copy before disabling mods, deleting caches, or renaming folders. A failed save does not automatically erase earlier saves, but an incorrect profile reset or a mismatched mod setup can make them harder to load.
- Exit Baldur’s Gate 3 completely, including the launcher.
- Copy the entire local profile folder to another drive or a clearly named backup directory. On Windows, the relevant location is under
%LocalAppData%Larian StudiosBaldur's Gate 3; keep the original folder untouched. - Record which save was made before Error 516 appeared, your active mods and load order, and whether you use Steam or GOG.
- Work from the copied profile when testing mod changes or a profile reset. If a test fails, restore the original folder rather than overwriting it.
How do I use the merchant Trade/Barter workaround?
Use a save from before the first failed save if possible. The important detail is to enter the merchant through the interface control, then switch modes and make a small transaction before trying to save.
- Load the earlier save and approach a merchant.
- Open the merchant window with the lower-left Trade button. If you use a controller, use its dedicated Trade action instead of relying on the dialogue option.
- Inside the merchant window, change the mode to Barter.
- Give, buy, or exchange one inexpensive item. A low-value transaction is enough for the test; do not risk your important equipment.
- Close the merchant window and make a new manual save.
- Exit to the title screen and load that new save. Confirm that it loads before continuing the campaign.
If the save still fails, repeat the same process with a different merchant. This distinguishes a single trader’s corrupted state from a campaign-wide problem. Do not overwrite the last known-good save until the new file has loaded successfully.

What is the difference between the merchant fix and system troubleshooting?
The merchant procedure targets the most distinctive Error 516 trigger. Larian’s general PC procedure targets permissions, damaged cache data, security software, installation files, cloud synchronization, and the local profile.

How do I test a modded save without losing it?
Use the backed-up copy and change one variable at a time. A clean test is more useful than removing every mod at once, because it shows whether the failure follows a particular mod or the save itself.
- Duplicate the backed-up profile again so each test starts from the same state.
- Disable suspected mods in the launcher or the mod manager, but do not delete their files yet.
- Load the copied campaign, perform the Trade-to-Barter procedure, and attempt a manual save.
- If saving works, re-enable mods in small groups until the failure returns. The last group changed is a suspect, not automatic proof of responsibility.
- If saving still fails with mods disabled, restore the original setup and continue with the general PC steps below.
A vanilla-looking save can still carry data from a mod that was removed earlier. Conversely, a fully unmodded campaign can hit Error 516. Keep both possibilities open rather than treating “disable all mods” as the universal answer.
What are Larian’s official PC troubleshooting steps?
Apply these in order after making the profile backup. They are general save and loading remedies, not a code-specific guarantee for Error 516.
1. Check security and backup software
Temporarily close or allowlist Baldur’s Gate 3 in antivirus, ransomware-protection, controlled-folder-access, and backup utilities. These programs can prevent the game from creating or replacing a save even when the game itself is healthy. Re-enable protection after the test and create a specific exception only if your security software supports one safely.

2. Clear LevelCache
Close the game, open %LocalAppData%Larian StudiosBaldur's Gate 3LevelCache, and delete the contents of that folder, not the entire Baldur’s Gate 3 profile. A corrupt file in LevelCache can cause problems when saving or loading. The game recreates the cache the next time it starts.
3. Verify the installation
On Steam, use the game’s Properties page and choose the installed-files option to verify integrity. In GOG Galaxy, open the game’s management menu and run the repair or verify command. Let the process finish, then launch the game and test a new manual save.
4. Launch the executable directly as administrator
As a diagnostic test, close the launcher and run the game executable directly with administrator privileges. This can reveal a Windows permission problem that is hidden when the launcher starts the process. Administrator mode is a test, not a reason to disable normal Windows security permanently.
5. Test with cloud synchronization disabled
Temporarily turn off Steam Cloud or GOG cloud synchronization, launch the game, and make a manual save. Cloud conflicts can restore an older file or interfere while a new save is being written. Keep a local backup first, and turn synchronization back on only after confirming which local file is the valid one.

Recreate the profile only after the merchant, mod, cache, file-verification, and cloud tests. The profile contains saves and configuration, so renaming it is safer than deleting it.

- Exit the game and launcher.
- Navigate to
%LocalAppData%Larian Studios. - Rename the
Baldur's Gate 3folder to something such asBaldur's Gate 3-backup. Do not delete it. - Start the game. It should generate a new, clean
Baldur's Gate 3folder. - Begin a new game, reach a point where a manual save is possible, and test saving.

Do not copy the entire old profile back at once if you are trying to identify corruption; doing so can reintroduce the same configuration or cache problem.
What should I do if a fresh profile still cannot save?
At that point the problem is less likely to be a particular campaign or merchant. Larian’s final isolation steps are a clean boot and a separate Windows administrator account.
Clean boot
Start Windows with nonessential third-party services and startup programs disabled, then test a new game and manual save. If saving works in a clean boot, re-enable services in groups until the interfering overlay, security tool, backup utility, or other background program is identified.

New Windows administrator account
Create a temporary local Windows administrator account and run the game there. A successful save in that account points to permissions or user-profile settings in the original Windows account. Keep your existing account and the backed-up Baldur’s Gate 3 folder intact while testing.

Larian described Patch 8 as the final major Baldur’s Gate 3 patch, while noting that minor bug fixes would continue. A March 26, 2026 Hotfix 36 release (version 4.1.1.7209685) addressed save-loading frame-rate drops, crashes, and other blockers after an earlier corrupted-save update. Neither the official general “Unable to Save” guidance nor the later notes specifically names Error 516, so no code-specific fix or current recurrence rate is established.

Install the current update for your platform before troubleshooting, but do not assume updating alone will repair an existing merchant or profile state. Keep the older save and profile backup even after a hotfix appears to help.
Are these instructions the same on PC and console?
No. The merchant Trade-to-Barter test is applicable wherever the same merchant interface exists, but the file and Windows isolation steps are PC procedures.

For a console-specific failure, use the platform’s save-management and reinstall tools only after confirming that cloud and local saves are backed up. The evidence summarized here does not establish a separate console procedure for Error 516.
How can I avoid making the problem worse?
- Keep at least one manual save from before the first failed save and rotate several save slots.
- Back up the complete profile before changing mods, deleting cache files, or resetting the profile.
- After a workaround, close and reload the new save before overwriting older saves.
- Do not remove a mod from an active campaign without checking whether the save depends on it.
- When cloud synchronization is involved, decide which local or cloud copy is authoritative before accepting a replacement.
- Use the merchant interface’s Trade button and Barter mode for the test instead of repeating the dialogue path that preceded the error.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Error 516 permanently delete my Baldur’s Gate 3 saves?
The error indicates that a save operation failed; it does not by itself prove that earlier saves are gone. Stop saving over your last working slot, close the game, and copy the local profile before attempting repairs.
Why does Baldur’s Gate 3 save again after I barter?
A barter transaction can force the merchant’s state to be serialized differently from the dialogue-based Trade route. That change may remove the condition blocking the save, but it is a workaround reported by players rather than a documented guarantee for every campaign.
Should I uninstall every mod when Error 516 appears?
No. Uninstalling mods on the only copy of an active save can create missing-dependency errors. Test a backed-up duplicate with suspected mods disabled, and restore the original setup if the test does not help.
Do I need to buy a controller to fix Error 516?
No. A controller is optional because the same test can be performed with the lower-left Trade button using a mouse and keyboard. Hardware is not a prerequisite for the merchant workaround.
