If Bluetooth disappeared after a Windows update, start with a complete power reset, then check Airplane mode and whether the Bluetooth adapter still appears in Device Manager. An adapter that is listed can usually be repaired by updating, rolling back, or reinstalling its driver; an adapter missing from both Settings and Device Manager needs the exact firmware or driver package from the PC manufacturer and possibly hardware diagnosis. The sequence below separates a missing Windows control from a connection problem and gives you a recovery path for Windows 11 and Windows 10.

What does a missing Bluetooth toggle after Windows Update mean?

The missing toggle is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Windows can hide Bluetooth when the adapter is not detected, its driver is broken or missing, firmware is incompatible, a system service is stuck, Airplane mode is enabled, or the update exposed a hardware or manufacturer-package problem. The first useful question is whether the adapter appears in Device Manager.

Open Settings and look for Bluetooth, then open Device Manager. If an entry under Bluetooth (sometimes labeled with the word “radio”) is present, Windows can see the hardware and driver work is the logical first branch. If the toggle is absent and Device Manager has no Bluetooth, hidden, or unknown entry that corresponds to the adapter, Windows is not currently detecting it; that calls for the PC maker’s model-specific package or support rather than repeated toggle changes.

How do I perform a complete power reset?

A full shutdown can reset an unresponsive Bluetooth device when a normal restart does not. Microsoft’s missing-control procedure uses the Shift key and a one-minute power-off interval.

  1. Save your work and close open applications.
  2. Hold Shift while selecting Start > Power > Shut down.
  3. Wait until the computer is completely off, then leave it powered down for one minute.
  4. Turn the computer on normally and sign in.
  5. Check Settings and Windows + A Quick Settings for the Bluetooth control.

This is a reset, not a driver replacement. If the control returns, test the device you need. If it remains absent, continue with detection and driver checks instead of repeating the shutdown indefinitely.

How do I check Airplane mode and the basic Bluetooth settings?

Airplane mode disables Bluetooth, so verify it before changing drivers. Press Windows + A to open Quick Settings and make sure Airplane mode is off. If the Bluetooth tile is missing rather than merely switched off, Windows may not have detected an adapter or may not have a usable driver.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After turning Airplane mode off, open Settings and search for Bluetooth. A visible toggle with no connected devices is a different problem from a missing toggle: the former means Windows sees the radio, while the latter points back to detection, driver, firmware, or service recovery. Do not assume that repeatedly pairing a device will restore a missing adapter.

How do I run Microsoft’s Bluetooth diagnostic?

Windows 11 includes an automated Bluetooth troubleshooter in the Get Help app. It can check common configuration and service conditions before you make manual driver changes.

  1. Open Get Help from the Start menu or Windows search.
  2. Enter a description such as “Bluetooth is missing after Windows Update.”
  3. Follow the Bluetooth diagnostic prompts and allow the app to apply any offered correction.
  4. Restart if Get Help requests it, then check whether the Bluetooth setting and adapter are visible.

The diagnostic cannot repair a physically disconnected or unsupported radio. Treat its result as a branch point: if it restores the control, test a device; if it reports that no adapter is found, inspect Device Manager and the manufacturer’s support package.

How do I inspect the Bluetooth adapter in Device Manager?

Device Manager tells you whether Windows can enumerate the adapter and gives you the driver recovery tools. An entry may be under Bluetooth, or the hardware may be identified as a radio. Expand that category and look for the internal adapter; also check Other devices for an unknown device if Bluetooth is not listed by name.

Update the installed driver

  1. Right-click the Bluetooth adapter and choose Update driver.
  2. Select Search automatically for drivers and complete the prompts.
  3. Restart Windows if requested, then check Settings again.

This path is appropriate when the adapter is visible and the failure is not clearly tied to a particular update. Windows may report that the best driver is already installed even when the manufacturer has a newer package; in that case, use the exact model support page described below rather than forcing an unrelated driver.

Roll back a driver installed before the failure

If Bluetooth disappeared immediately after Windows Update, rollback is the targeted test. Right-click the adapter, choose Properties, open the Driver tab, and select Roll Back Driver when the button is available. Windows requires administrator permission for rollback. Microsoft notes that reinstalling the previous driver often resolves a problem that began after an update.

Finish the rollback, restart, and check both Device Manager and Settings. If the rollback button is unavailable, Windows has no previous driver stored for that adapter; proceed to uninstall and reinstall or obtain the manufacturer package.

How do I uninstall and reinstall the Bluetooth adapter?

When updating or rolling back does not restore Bluetooth, removing the adapter entry lets Windows rebuild it during the next boot.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. In Device Manager, expand Bluetooth and right-click the affected adapter.
  2. Choose Uninstall device and confirm the removal. If Windows offers a checkbox to remove the driver package, read the prompt carefully before accepting it; you need a replacement package available if the system does not redetect the hardware.
  3. Shut the computer down, then turn it back on. Windows should detect the adapter and reinstall its driver.
  4. If the adapter does not return, open Device Manager, select Action > Scan for hardware changes, and wait for detection to finish.
  5. Restart once more and check the Bluetooth toggle.

Do not uninstall unrelated network devices while trying this procedure. If scanning produces no Bluetooth or unknown-device entry, the issue has moved from a normal reinstall to hardware detection or a missing manufacturer package.

What should I do when Bluetooth is absent from Device Manager?

An absent adapter means Windows is not currently enumerating the radio. First display any hidden devices in Device Manager and inspect Other devices for an unknown device. A hidden or unknown entry can indicate that the update left the device without a usable driver.

Next, install the Bluetooth, chipset, BIOS, UEFI, or firmware package supplied for your exact PC model. Use the manufacturer’s support site, enter the model or service identifier, and select the package for your Windows edition. Manufacturer support matters here because Microsoft says Bluetooth hardware errors are typically caused by drivers or firmware supplied by the PC manufacturer.

If the adapter remains absent from both Settings and Device Manager after the exact package and a power reset, contact the manufacturer or arrange hardware diagnosis. That state does not prove the radio has failed, but Windows has no software-level device to update, roll back, or reinstall.

How do I check optional firmware and BIOS updates?

Windows can offer firmware packages separately from ordinary quality updates. Open Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates and look for BIOS, UEFI, firmware, or device-driver entries that match your PC.

Install only packages identified for your exact model, keep the computer connected to reliable power, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. If Optional updates contains nothing relevant, go to the PC manufacturer’s support page and search by the precise model rather than downloading a package for a similar product. A firmware update can restore enumeration when the update and the radio’s low-level software no longer agree, but it cannot correct every physical fault.

Should I restart the Bluetooth Support Service?

Restarting the service is useful when the adapter is present but Bluetooth remains unstable or the control does not respond. It is not a substitute for installing a missing driver.

  1. Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Find Bluetooth Support Service in the list.
  3. Right-click it and choose Restart. If it is stopped, choose Start.
  4. Close the Services window and check Settings and Quick Settings.

If the service repeatedly stops, return to Device Manager and the manufacturer package path. A service restart cannot make an adapter that Windows does not detect appear.

What if Bluetooth comes back but devices still will not connect?

Once the toggle and adapter are visible, a failure to connect is a pairing or connection issue rather than a missing-adapter issue. Turn Bluetooth off, wait 10 seconds, turn it back on, and pair the device again. Put the accessory into its pairing mode before starting the new pairing attempt.

If the radio disappears again during this test, return to the driver, firmware, and service branches. If the radio remains visible but only one accessory fails, focus on that accessory’s pairing state instead of uninstalling the computer’s adapter.

How does Windows 10 support affect this troubleshooting?

Microsoft states that free Windows Update support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. On a Windows 10 PC in 2026, you may therefore need the OEM driver or firmware package rather than expecting a new Windows Update to correct the problem, and you may need to decide whether the hardware supports an upgrade to Windows 11.

The Device Manager, Services, Quick Settings, Optional updates, and manufacturer-support steps above still provide the practical recovery path. Confirm the exact Windows edition and PC model before installing any package intended for a different release.

Which troubleshooting path fits my symptoms?

Use the combination of the toggle state, Device Manager detection, and update timing to choose the shortest safe path.

Bluetooth toggle Adapter in Device Manager Did failure follow Windows Update? Best next actions
Missing Visible Yes Complete power reset; check Airplane mode; run Get Help; roll back the driver; reinstall it if rollback is unavailable; check optional firmware.
Missing Visible No or unclear Power reset; check Airplane mode; run Get Help; update the driver; reinstall the adapter; review the manufacturer package.
Missing Absent, hidden, or unknown Any Show hidden devices; inspect Other devices; install the exact manufacturer driver or firmware; scan for hardware changes; escalate to model-specific support if detection does not return.
Present Visible Not applicable Restart Bluetooth Support Service if unstable; toggle Bluetooth off for 10 seconds, back on, and re-pair devices.

The table is a triage aid, not a claim that one step always works. The manufacturer’s package and hardware support become the priority when Windows cannot see the adapter at all.

When is a USB Bluetooth adapter a reasonable fallback?

Consider a USB Bluetooth adapter only after Windows diagnostics and the PC manufacturer’s driver and firmware guidance fail, or when hardware diagnosis indicates that the internal radio is faulty. Compatibility depends on the PC, Windows version, available USB port, and whether the internal adapter is disabled or physically damaged.

Before buying one, verify that the adapter has a driver for your Windows release and that the manufacturer provides installation instructions. A USB radio can bypass a failed internal device, but it does not repair the original adapter or explain why it disappeared.

What information should I collect before contacting the manufacturer?

Record the PC’s exact model, Windows edition, the date the Bluetooth control disappeared, and whether the failure began immediately after a specific Windows Update. Note whether Device Manager shows a Bluetooth, radio, hidden, or unknown entry, and save any error text from Get Help or Device Manager.

That information lets support provide the correct BIOS, UEFI, chipset, Bluetooth, or firmware package instead of a generic download. It also prevents a mistaken installation intended for a similar model and gives a repair technician a clear account of what changed.

As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan more than 100 devices for outdated, corrupted, or missing drivers, install official drivers, show current and recommended versions, back up and restore drivers, and schedule scans. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7; a 2-day free trial requires no credit card before a subscription, and results vary because no tool repairs every hardware failure.

What should I do after Bluetooth is restored?

Verify the result instead of stopping when the toggle reappears. Confirm that the adapter remains listed after a restart, turn Bluetooth off for 10 seconds and back on, then pair the required device. If the control disappears again, record whether it vanishes from Device Manager as well; that distinction determines whether the next attempt should focus on drivers and firmware or on manufacturer hardware support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a Windows update permanently remove my computer’s Bluetooth hardware?

An update can leave the adapter without a usable driver or firmware, making it appear to have vanished, but the absence of the toggle alone does not prove permanent hardware damage. Check Device Manager and the exact manufacturer package before treating the radio as failed.

Do I need administrator access to restore Bluetooth?

Most viewing and diagnostic steps do not require elevation, but rolling back a driver requires administrator permission. Manufacturer firmware installers may impose their own elevation and restart requirements, so use an administrator account when the installer requests it.

Why does Bluetooth work in Device Manager but not in Settings?

That combination usually means Windows can enumerate the radio but a driver, service, firmware, or configuration state is preventing the control from loading. Run Get Help, update or roll back the adapter, restart Bluetooth Support Service, and then reinstall the adapter if necessary.

Will a USB Bluetooth adapter work on every Windows PC?

No. Compatibility depends on the adapter’s driver support for your Windows version, an available USB port, and whether the internal radio is disabled or physically faulty. Check those requirements before using an external adapter as a fallback.
