If The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered became blurry, ghosted, shimmery, or prone to texture pop-in on Nintendo Switch 2 after Update 1.1, start by updating the game, then test the console’s Performance/Quality, Motion Blur, and Screen Space Reflections (SSR) controls in a repeatable scene. Bethesda has acknowledged increased blurring, ghosting, reduced visual quality, reduced sharpness/detail, and flickering or instability after Update 1.1, but its support article still describes the problem as under investigation rather than promising a settings-based cure.
The sequence below separates a known game-side regression from individual texture and level-of-detail (LOD) defects. It also gives you a clean record to provide to Bethesda if reinstalling does not help. You do not need to change your television settings before trying these in-game steps.

What is causing the blurry or unstable image?
Bethesda Support says: “We are investigating reports that some players on Nintendo Switch 2 are experiencing increased image blurring, ghosting, and reduced visual quality in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered after installing Update 1.1.” That acknowledgement matters because it means a sudden loss of sharpness after the update can be a game-side regression, not evidence that your Switch 2 screen has failed.
The same report covers reduced detail and flickering or instability. Those symptoms can overlap, but they are not identical:

- Shimmering or flicker: thin geometry, foliage, distant edges, or reflective surfaces sparkle or pulse as the camera moves.
- Texture pop-in: a surface first appears low-detail or missing and then loads a sharper texture as you approach.
- LOD pop: a distant model or lighting state changes abruptly when the game switches to a nearer level of detail.
A toggle can make one symptom less noticeable while leaving another untouched. Treat each change as a controlled test rather than assuming that every visual defect has the same cause.
What the 2026 patches actually changed
The published notes show that some visual problems are patch-level defects, but they do not establish that every current blur, shimmer, or pop-in report has been fixed.
| Patch | Date | Switch 2 visual changes documented by Bethesda |
|---|---|---|
| Patch 1.0 | August 11, 2026 | Fixed incorrect texture loading on a rock formation outside Kvatch; fixed an LOD light leak in the Hall of Epochs; fixed noticeable LOD pop when approaching distant mountains in the West Weald from Skingrad. |
| Patch 1.1 | September 17, 2026 | The published Switch 2 visual section lists a correction for the Lucky Old Lady statue animation in Bravil. It does not say that the broad blur or ghosting regression is fixed. |
Bethesda’s dedicated support article still says the Update 1.1 image-quality issue is being investigated. The authoritative pages available for this article do not publish a confirmed restoration date, an exact latest build number, a measured resolution, a frame-rate figure, or a frequency for texture pop-in. Do not interpret the absence of a number as proof that every console behaves identically.

Before changing settings, identify the symptom
When the whole image is soft
Look at stationary details such as book lettering, stone seams, armor edges, and distant architecture. If those details remain soft even while the camera is still, you are testing overall image sharpness rather than motion blur. Capture the same view before and after each change.
When moving objects leave trails
Pan slowly past a character, fence, or sign. A trailing silhouette points toward perceived motion smear. Motion Blur is the documented control to test first for this particular complaint, although Bethesda presents it as a visibility adjustment and does not claim that it repairs the Update 1.1 regression.
When edges sparkle or flicker
Use a repeatable view containing railings, foliage, thin branches, or a reflective floor. Shimmer that follows camera movement is different from a texture that loads late. Screen Space Reflections (SSR) is the documented toggle to compare when the problem is concentrated on reflective surfaces or moving geometry.

When surfaces or distant objects change abruptly
Approach the same rock, building, or mountain from the same direction. A single transition at a predictable distance is useful evidence. Patch 1.0 specifically addressed the rock outside Kvatch and the distant mountains viewed from Skingrad, so those locations are useful checks after updating; a different location may represent a separate remaining defect.
Step-by-step troubleshooting sequence
- Install every available game update. Check for an update for the Switch 2 edition before judging image quality. Patch 1.0 fixed the Kvatch rock’s incorrect texture loading, the Hall of Epochs LOD light leak, and noticeable mountain LOD pop in the West Weald near Skingrad. Those fixes demonstrate why the current build matters, but they do not prove that every pop-in or blur symptom is resolved.
- Create a controlled baseline. Load one save in a location where you can reproduce the problem. Keep the same camera angle, movement speed, display connection, and graphics mode for each comparison. Write down whether the defect is stationary blur, motion trails, shimmering, flicker, or a late texture/LOD swap. A controlled baseline prevents a different scene or camera path from making a setting appear to work.
- Compare Performance and Quality. Bethesda documents a console Performance/Quality control that favors performance or visual fidelity. Select one mode, repeat the baseline movement, then select the other and repeat it. Record which mode looks sharper and which produces fewer shimmering or traversal artifacts. Bethesda does not claim that either mode permanently fixes the Update 1.1 blur, so keep the mode that best fits your priority rather than expecting a universal correct choice.
- Turn Motion Blur off while diagnosing trails. Motion Blur is a console toggle, and Bethesda says disabling it makes moving objects easier to see. Re-run the same pan with the toggle disabled. If trails become less distracting, the change improved perceived motion clarity; it is not confirmation that the underlying rendering regression has been repaired. You can turn the option back on at any time if you prefer its cinematic look.
- Compare Screen Space Reflections (SSR). SSR is another official console toggle. Test the identical reflective or geometry-heavy view with SSR enabled and disabled. If shimmering is limited to reflections or moving surfaces, this comparison can show whether the effect is tied to that rendering feature. Bethesda documents the control but does not state that switching SSR resolves Update 1.1 blur, ghosting, or general flicker.
- Fully restart and retest. After choosing a mode or toggle, close the game rather than relying only on returning to the title screen, then launch it again and load the same save. Repeat the baseline movement. This removes a temporary session state from the comparison; it does not represent a publisher-confirmed repair. If the effect returns immediately in the same scene, note that in your support report.
- Reinstall if the problem persists. Bethesda’s technical-support guidance recommends reinstalling the game for continuing technical issues. After reinstalling, install all available updates, load the same save, and repeat the controlled test before changing several options at once. If the visual problem remains, submit a Bethesda support ticket with the update history, Performance/Quality mode, Motion Blur and SSR states, location, save information, and a description of the repeatable camera movement.
Which change is worth trying first?
The following comparison keeps the expected result separate from what Bethesda has actually confirmed. Every setting change is reversible.
| Option | Likely use in diagnosis | Effect on blur or ghosting | Effect on shimmer or pop-in | Performance or fidelity trade-off | What Bethesda confirms |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Performance/Quality | Run the same traversal in both modes and compare sharpness and stability. | One mode may look clearer in your scene; no permanent blur cure is promised. | Useful for comparing traversal artifacts; a universal reduction is not stated. | Performance mode favors performance; Quality mode favors visual fidelity. | Bethesda documents the control, not a guaranteed Update 1.1 fix. |
| Motion Blur off | Diagnose trails during camera movement or moving-object tests. | Can make moving objects easier to see. | Not stated as a solution for shimmering or texture/LOD pop-in. | Removes the motion-blur presentation effect; the guidance does not quantify another cost. | Bethesda says disabling it improves visibility of moving objects. |
| SSR off | Compare reflective floors, water, and moving reflective geometry. | Not stated as a solution for general blur or ghosting. | Worth comparing when shimmer is concentrated on reflections or moving geometry. | Turning SSR off changes reflective rendering; no measured performance effect is published. | Bethesda documents the toggle, but not a claim that it fixes the regression. |
| Restart | Check whether the appearance changes after a fresh launch. | Can show whether the issue is session-dependent; not a confirmed cure. | Can show whether a temporary state is involved; not a confirmed cure. | No graphics mode change is required. | This is a repeatable diagnostic method, not a Bethesda repair claim. |
| Reinstall | Use after updates and controlled setting tests fail. | Tests whether local game data is contributing. | Tests whether local game data is contributing. | Requires downloading or copying the game again and then applying updates. | Bethesda technical support advises reinstalling for continuing technical issues. |
How to investigate texture pop-in at known locations
Rock formation outside Kvatch
Patch 1.0 specifically fixed incorrect texture loading on a rock formation outside Kvatch. After updating, approach that formation using the same route and speed. If the texture now appears correctly but another rock still changes late, you have confirmed that one documented defect was addressed without proving that all texture streaming is fixed.

Hall of Epochs
The same patch fixed an LOD light leak in the Hall of Epochs. This is a lighting transition rather than a general sharpness test. If you still see a bright seam or leaking light there, record the room, direction, camera motion, and graphics mode for Bethesda instead of assuming that Motion Blur or SSR controls it.
West Weald mountains viewed from Skingrad
Patch 1.0 also addressed noticeable LOD pop when approaching distant mountains in the West Weald from Skingrad. Reproduce the approach from the same side of the city and compare both Performance and Quality modes. A different mountain route, a different weather state, or a different camera distance is not a like-for-like check, so describe those differences in any ticket.
Other locations
For locations not named in the patch notes, document the first point at which the texture or model changes. Include whether the change happens while standing still, during a slow pan, or only while moving through the world. Bethesda has not published a complete list of every remaining pop-in case, so a precise reproduction is more useful than labeling every late load as the same bug.

How to tell a game issue from a display or console issue
Do not change television sharpness, noise reduction, or other picture controls while you are establishing a baseline. Such adjustments can hide the distinction between a game-rendering change and a display-processing effect. First use the in-game controls and the same display setup, then compare the repeatable scene after a fresh launch.
If the symptoms began immediately after Update 1.1 and are visible in the same save and scene, Bethesda’s acknowledgement makes a game-side regression plausible. That does not prove that every Switch 2 unit is affected, nor does it rule out a separate cable, dock, cartridge, or console problem. If the issue concerns the eShop purchase or download, cartridge read errors, the dock, controllers, or Switch 2 hardware, Bethesda directs players to Nintendo Support rather than its game-support queue.
When reinstalling does not help
Submit the issue to Bethesda after the update, controlled setting tests, restart, and reinstall. Give support information that lets an engineer distinguish blur from streaming or LOD behavior:

- State that the symptoms appeared after Update 1.1, if that is when you first noticed them.
- List the installed game update as shown by the console, if the system displays it.
- Name the save location and the exact route or camera movement that reproduces the effect.
- Record Performance or Quality mode and whether Motion Blur and SSR were on or off.
- Describe whether the issue is stationary softness, motion trails, shimmering, flicker, a texture swap, or an LOD transition.
- Explain what changed after a full restart and reinstall.
Use a short video or still images if the support form accepts them, but keep the scene and camera movement consistent so the visual change is easy to compare. Bethesda’s published guidance does not promise a workaround beyond these controls and reinstall advice, so a clear reproduction is the appropriate next step when the regression remains.
What you should expect from a fix
A successful setting adjustment should produce a repeatable improvement in the symptom you targeted: less perceived smear with Motion Blur disabled, a different reflective appearance with SSR changed, or a preferable balance of sharpness and traversal artifacts in one Performance/Quality mode. It may leave other defects unchanged.
A patch-level correction is different. Patch 1.0 names individual texture and LOD fixes, while Patch 1.1’s published Switch 2 visual notes name the Bravil Lucky Old Lady statue animation correction but do not announce a broad image-quality restoration. Bethesda’s separate blur report remains under investigation as of October 19, 2026. Until a later official note says otherwise, treat improvements from toggles as workarounds for perception and diagnosis rather than proof that the Update 1.1 regression is fixed.
