If a Brother printer shows 0x007007E, do not assume the hexadecimal string identifies a failed cartridge, cable, driver, or internal part. Brother’s published support pages use different labels, including “Print Unable XX” and “Cannot Print ##,” and do not define 0x007007E as a standard Brother code. The safest fix is to capture the complete message, determine whether the failure affects every job or only photos, then work through power, connection, Windows printer, driver, spooler, and application checks in that order. If the printer itself continues to display a mechanical-style warning, stop replacing parts and contact Brother support or an authorized service center.
What does Brother error 0x007007E mean?
There is no confirmed universal Brother definition for 0x007007E. The digits alone are insufficient to identify a cause, and the code should be treated as unverified until you copy the entire dialog exactly, including any words before or after the hexadecimal value.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Brother support documentation describes separate messages such as “Print Unable” followed by a two-digit code and “Cannot Print” followed by two symbols. Those messages refer to a possible mechanical problem in the machine, but they are not the same label as 0x007007E. A community report containing the exact hexadecimal string involved an HP OfficeJet Pro 8025 on 64-bit Windows 10 that failed while printing photos; that report is useful for separating photo or application failures from printer hardware faults, not for proving that a Brother printer has the same defect.
Because the code is ambiguous, troubleshooting must follow the symptom. A printer-panel warning, a Windows-only dialog, a USB connection failure, and a photo-only failure each point to a different next step.

What information should I record before changing anything?
Write down the details below or take a clear photograph of the complete message. This prevents a generic code from being mistaken for a model-specific service code.
- The full error text, including capitalization, punctuation, prefixes, suffixes, and any filename.
- The exact Brother model number and, if requested by support, the serial number.
- Your Windows edition and version, including whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit when shown.
- Whether the printer uses USB, Wi-Fi, or Ethernet.
- Where the message appears: the printer’s LCD panel, Windows Settings, a print-status window, or a particular application.
- Whether every document fails, or only photos, PDFs, one file, or one application.
- Whether the machine can make a standalone copy from its own controls.
- The driver version and the steps you have already tried.
These facts answer the diagnostic questions that matter most: where the message appears, whether copying works, and whether the problem affects photos or all documents.

Use this table to choose the least invasive next test. Do not skip directly to replacing supplies because the code looks technical.
| Observed pattern | Most useful next check | What it can tell you |
|---|---|---|
| Every job fails from every application | Check the printer panel, power, connection, Windows printer entry, and queue | A machine state, connection, driver, or spooler problem is more likely than a single damaged photo |
| Only photos or one application fail | Print a plain document and the same image from another application | The application, image, rendering path, or print settings may be involved |
| The printer panel shows “Print Unable” or “Cannot Print” | Power-cycle once, inspect for mechanical warnings, then contact Brother if the message returns | Brother treats those analogous labels as possible machine malfunctions |
| Windows reports the error but the printer panel is normal | Check USB or network access, remove and re-add the printer, and reinstall the exact model driver | The Windows print path may be failing before the machine receives the job |
| USB fails but the printer works from another computer | Reconnect directly, try another computer port, and avoid hubs while testing | The cable, port, or local Windows installation needs isolation |
| Wi-Fi or Ethernet jobs fail while local controls work | Confirm both devices are on the intended network and re-add the printer using the current network address | Network discovery or routing may be the issue |
How do I check and restart the Brother printer safely?
- Confirm the machine is on and idle. Wait for startup to finish. If the display shows a paper, cover, carriage, fuser, jam, or other warning, resolve that visible condition according to the model’s on-screen instructions first.
- Inspect the paper path. Remove a partial sheet only if it is accessible without forcing rollers or the print carriage. Close every cover fully and make sure the correct tray is loaded.
- Power-cycle the printer. Turn it off with the printer’s power control, wait several seconds, and turn it back on. Microsoft’s general Windows printer guidance also recommends unplugging and restarting for about 30 seconds when a device remains in an error state.
- Wait for a ready state. Do not send a new job while the machine is still initializing. Print a built-in status or test page if your model offers that option.
- Observe what returns. If the panel immediately restores a persistent “Print Unable” or “Cannot Print” message, treat that as a possible machine fault rather than a Windows queue problem and proceed to support escalation.
Brother describes “Print Unable” followed by a two-digit code as a mechanical malfunction of the Brother machine and advises powering off and on, then seeking service if the message comes back. Its analogous “Cannot Print ##” guidance also directs persistent cases to Brother support or an authorized service center.

How do I verify a USB, Wi-Fi, or Ethernet connection?
USB connection
- Cancel any pending print job and disconnect the USB cable from the computer.
- Reconnect the cable directly to the computer rather than through a hub or docking station.
- Try a different USB port, then check whether Windows detects the printer in Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners on Windows 11 or Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners on Windows 10.
- If possible, test the printer from another computer. A successful test elsewhere points toward the original computer’s port, cable, driver, or queue.
Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection
- Check the printer’s network information page or panel and confirm that it is connected to the intended network.
- Make sure the computer is on that same network. A guest network, isolated wireless band, VPN, or changed router can prevent discovery even when internet access works.
- Restart the printer and, if necessary, the router. Then use Windows’ printer-add process again instead of repeatedly sending jobs to an old offline entry.
- For Ethernet, reseat the cable at both ends and check the link indicators on the printer or network equipment.
Microsoft’s printer guidance recommends checking cables or wireless status and looking for paper, ink or toner, an open cover, or a jam whenever Windows marks a printer as being in an error state.
How do I remove and reinstall the Brother printer in Windows?
Re-creating the printer entry removes stale ports and queues, but it does not replace the driver automatically in every Windows installation.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners in Windows 11, or Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners in Windows 10.
- Select the affected Brother printer and choose Remove or Remove device. Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows. This releases handles held by the print subsystem and ensures the old device entry is not immediately reused.
- Return to the same Printers & scanners page and choose Add device. For a network printer, allow discovery to finish or select the option to add it manually when the correct device is not found.
- Print a Windows test page. If the test page fails, the issue is still in the Windows-to-printer path; if it succeeds, test the original application and file separately.
On Windows 7 or Windows 8, the equivalent path is Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Devices and Printers. Right-click the old printer, remove it, then use Add a printer after restarting.
How do I install the correct Brother driver?
Download the package from Brother’s official support site by entering the exact model number. Brother explains that a driver transmits data between the computer and printer, so a driver for a similar-looking model is not a safe substitute.

- Identify the complete model name from the printer label or its panel; do not rely only on a family name.
- Select your Windows edition and architecture when the support page asks for them.
- Download the current printer driver or full software package listed for that exact model and operating system.
- Run the installer with the printer disconnected if the installer requests that, then reconnect USB only when prompted. For a network model, choose the intended Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection during setup.
- Restart Windows after installation if requested, then print a test page before retrying the original job.
If the installation reports that a newer driver is already present, remove the old printer entry first and repeat the model-specific installation. Avoid driver-download sites that do not identify Brother as the source.
How do I clear a stuck Windows print queue?
A damaged or locked queue can make every new job fail even when the printer itself is ready. You need an administrator account to stop the service and remove queued files.
- Press Windows key + R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. - Find Print Spooler, right-click it, and choose Stop.
- Open File Explorer and enter
%WINDIR%System32spoolPRINTERSin the address bar. Approve the administrator prompt if Windows asks. - Delete the files inside that folder, but do not delete the folder itself.
- Return to Services, right-click Print Spooler, and choose Start.
- Restart the printer, confirm that the queue is empty, and send one small test document.
If the spooler stops again immediately, note the application and filename that created the job, remove the printer software, and reinstall the exact Brother package before testing again.
What if only a photo triggers 0x007007E?
A photo-only failure does not establish a Brother hardware defect. Test the scope before changing printer settings or buying supplies.

- Print a short plain-text document from a basic application such as a text editor.
- Open the same image in a different application and print it without changing the printer’s standard quality and color settings.
- Try a different image file. A damaged, unusually large, or unsupported image can fail while ordinary documents print normally.
- Compare the results. If text and another image print, concentrate on the original application, image file, or rendering path. If every job fails, return to the connection, driver, queue, and printer-panel checks.
The published report containing this exact hexadecimal string concerned photo printing on an HP OfficeJet Pro 8025, and an HP employee asked whether copying worked and whether all documents failed. That makes symptom separation important, but it is not evidence of a Brother-specific photo error.

Brother’s guidance for persistent “Print Unable” and “Cannot Print” messages is to use warranty support or an authorized service center.
Should I buy toner, ink, a drum, a printhead, a fuser, or a cable?
No cited evidence identifies any of those parts as the cause of 0x007007E. Do not purchase a consumable, cleaning kit, replacement cable, or internal component solely because the hexadecimal string appears. Replace a supply or cable only when the model’s own status information, a visible failure, or a technician’s diagnosis independently identifies it.

What should I avoid while troubleshooting?
- Do not download a DLL or copy one into
System32to address this printer message. - Do not edit the registry unless Brother or Microsoft support gives a model- and version-specific procedure.
- Do not install an unofficial or mismatched driver.
- Do not repeatedly resend jobs while the spooler is stuck; clear the queue first.
- Do not assume the printer is infected or that the code proves a virus, ink failure, cable failure, or particular mechanical part has failed.
- Do not open covers or force the carriage beyond the maintenance instructions for your model.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can 0x007007E damage my Brother printer?
The code by itself does not establish physical damage or identify a failing part. If the printer can make a standalone copy and its panel is normal, start with Windows and connection tests rather than opening the machine.
Why does my Brother printer work for text but fail on photos?
Photo jobs use a different rendering path and can expose an application, image-file, memory, or driver problem. Print the same image from another application and try a different image before changing hardware.
How can I tell whether the error is from Windows or the printer?
A message shown on the printer’s own panel, especially a persistent “Print Unable” or “Cannot Print” warning, points toward the machine. A Windows-only dialog with a normal ready panel points first toward the queue, driver, connection, or application.
What details will Brother Support ask for?
Have the exact model, complete error wording, serial number if requested, Windows version, connection type, driver version, copy capability, and a list of tests ready. Also state whether all documents fail or only photos or one application.
