ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT means Chrome waited too long to establish a connection with a website. Start by checking whether one site or several sites fail: a single failing site is usually a server or routing problem, while widespread failures point to your browser, device, Wi-Fi, router, DNS, proxy, security software or internet provider. Verify the address, reload, test unrelated sites, then work through browser and network checks in that order. Do not leave firewall or antivirus protection disabled after a diagnostic test.
What does ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT mean?
Google Chrome Help defines ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT (also shown as ERR_TIMED_OUT) as “The page took too long to connect.” Chrome sent a connection request but did not receive a response within the permitted time. A slow connection or a busy website can cause it, but the same symptom can also come from a wrong address, a failed DNS lookup, a proxy, filtering, a router problem or a blocked port.

Why does Chrome time out on one website but other sites work?
If unrelated websites load normally and only one domain times out, the failing site, its hosting provider or the network path to that site is the leading suspect. If many unrelated sites fail, investigate your device, Chrome, local network, DNS, proxy, security software or ISP instead.

How do I fix a Chrome timeout quickly?
Follow these steps in sequence. Stop when the page works; each step is reversible until you reach a reset or reinstall.
- Verify the address and reload. Look for a misspelled domain, an extra character or an outdated bookmark. Select Chrome’s Reload control, or press
Ctrl+Ron Windows/Linux orCommand+Ron macOS. - Test the scope. Open two or three unrelated, well-known websites in new tabs. If only the original site fails, avoid changing your computer settings yet; the site may be down or overloaded. If multiple sites fail, continue.
- Confirm a live connection. Check that Wi-Fi is connected to the intended network or that the Ethernet cable is seated. On public Wi-Fi, open a new tab and look for a sign-in or acceptance page; browsing can remain blocked until that portal is completed.
- Restart the network equipment. Power-cycle the modem and router according to the manufacturer’s instructions, wait for their connection lights to stabilize, then reconnect your computer. If another device also cannot browse, this test is more useful than changing Chrome.
- Update and fully restart Chrome. Open the three-dot menu, choose Help and About Google Chrome, install any offered update and select Relaunch. If no update is offered, quit every Chrome window, reopen the browser and retry.
- Use Incognito to isolate extensions and stored state. Open the three-dot menu and choose New Incognito window (or press
Ctrl+Shift+N/Command+Shift+N). If the page loads there, an extension, cookie or cached session is interfering. Disable extensions at chrome://extensions, then re-enable them one at a time until the failure returns. - Clear browsing data when Incognito works. Open the three-dot menu, choose Delete browsing data, select an appropriate time range and clear cookies, cached images/files and, if needed, history. Clearing cookies signs you out of sites and may remove saved preferences, so record any information you need first.
- Check firewall and antivirus rules. Review the security program’s blocked-app, web-filter or network-protection entries and allow Chrome only if you recognize the installation. For a short diagnostic test, an administrator may temporarily pause a specific web-filter feature; immediately turn protection back on and retest. Never leave the computer unprotected as a workaround.
- Reduce local load. Close unused tabs, stop unnecessary downloads and exit applications that are consuming memory or network bandwidth. Chrome’s built-in Task Manager (three-dot menu → More tools → Task Manager) can show tabs or extensions using excessive resources. Restart the computer if Chrome is generally unstable.
- Reset Chrome only as a last browser step. Go to Settings → Reset settings → Restore settings to their original defaults and confirm. This resets startup pages, new-tab behavior, search settings and extensions while preserving bookmarks and saved passwords, but review the displayed warning before proceeding.
- Reinstall Chrome if the problem survives the reset. Uninstall Chrome through your operating system’s app settings, download the current installer from Google’s official Chrome site, install it and test before restoring extensions. If other browsers also time out, reinstalling Chrome is unlikely to address the underlying network fault.
How do I repair a Chrome timeout on Windows?
Windows troubleshooting is most useful after you have established that several sites fail or that other applications cannot reach the internet. Reconnect first, then refresh the IP lease and DNS cache from an Administrator Command Prompt.
Reconnect and inspect the address
- Open Settings → Network & Internet and confirm Wi-Fi or Ethernet shows Connected.
- Disconnect and reconnect to the network. If Wi-Fi is unavailable, test Ethernet when possible; a wired comparison separates radio interference from wider service problems.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator and run
ipconfig. An address beginning with169.254.means Windows did not obtain an address from the router through DHCP. Restart the router and check its DHCP or cable connection rather than assigning a random address.
Release, renew and flush DNS
In an Administrator Command Prompt, run each command and wait for it to complete:
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns
Close and reopen Chrome after the commands. They request a fresh local address and remove cached DNS answers; they do not repair an ISP outage or a website that is down.
Check the Windows proxy setting
Go to Settings → Network & Internet → Proxy. Turn off an unexpected manual proxy or script that you did not configure. Organizations may require a proxy, so leave managed settings in place and ask the administrator before changing them. Also check whether a VPN client is forcing traffic through an unavailable gateway; disconnect it only if policy permits and then retest.

Confirm that DNS is configured and reachable
In Settings → Network & Internet → your connection’s properties, verify that a DNS server is listed. If the resolver cannot be reached, use the DNS values documented by your network administrator or internet provider. Do not paste arbitrary addresses from an unverified guide: changing DNS can affect filtering, parental controls, internal company names and privacy.

How can I test DNS and routing when Chrome still times out?
These commands help identify whether the delay occurs before Chrome reaches the website. They are diagnostic, not universal repairs; a timeout can originate in any server or network component handling the traffic.
Windows DNS and route tests
Open Command Prompt and query a known resolver with:
nslookup example.com dns.google
Replace example.com with the domain that fails. A returned address shows that the query received an answer; a timeout or server-unreachable message points toward DNS filtering, a blocked resolver or a network path problem. Compare the result with your normal DNS server if your administrator provides one.
To view the network hops toward a destination, run:

tracert example.com
One asterisk does not automatically identify the fault because many routers intentionally suppress traceroute replies. Repeated timeouts beginning at your own gateway are more useful evidence than a silent hop farther away.
macOS and Linux tests
In Terminal, use dig for DNS and traceroute for the route:
dig example.com @dns.google
traceroute example.com
On some Linux distributions, the route utility is named tracepath; macOS may request administrator credentials for certain network changes. If the DNS query works but Chrome still times out, focus on the browser, firewall, proxy or the destination server rather than repeatedly changing resolvers.
Interpret filtering carefully
If some tests work while others return network errors or timeouts, filtering may be preventing access to the public resolver or destination. On a managed network, save the command output and give it to the administrator. Do not install a certificate, bypass a filter or disable a firewall merely to make one site load.
Which Chrome timeout fix should I try first?
The safest choice depends on the failure’s scope and the layer you are testing. Use reversible actions before resets, and reserve security-software changes for a controlled comparison.

What if Chrome times out on every device?
When phones, consoles and computers on the same connection fail, the browser is not the common component. Check the modem and router indicators, reconnect cables, reboot the equipment and test again after it has fully synchronized. If the service remains unavailable, contact your ISP; provide the outage time, affected devices and whether the router reports an internet connection.
For a work, school or hotel network, ask the administrator about captive-portal requirements, proxy configuration, domain filtering and DNS policy. They can check firewall logs or capture traffic without asking you to weaken security controls. Do not install a third-party root certificate or use a bypass utility unless the organization explicitly supplies and supports it.

- Contact the website owner when one domain fails while unrelated sites work, especially after you have confirmed the URL and retried later.
- Contact your ISP when multiple devices lose access, the router cannot obtain a service connection or the problem follows you across browsers and wired/wireless tests.
- Contact a work or school administrator when policy-controlled proxy, DNS, filtering or firewall settings are involved.
- Contact local technical support when Windows repeatedly receives a

Will changing DNS always fix ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT?
No. DNS changes help only when the configured resolver is unavailable, returning incorrect data or being filtered. If the website server, router, proxy or firewall is the failing layer, a different resolver will not correct it and may interfere with network policies.
Can a VPN cause Chrome to time out?
Yes. A VPN can route traffic through an unavailable gateway or apply its own DNS and filtering rules. If your organization allows it, disconnect the VPN briefly as a comparison; reconnect it afterward and report the result to the VPN or network administrator.
Why does Incognito work while normal Chrome does not?
Incognito starts with a separate temporary browsing session and normally prevents extensions from running unless you explicitly allow them. A working Incognito window therefore points to an extension, cookie, cache entry or saved site permission in your regular profile, not necessarily to an internet outage.

Does a 169.254 address mean my internet provider is down?
Not necessarily. It means Windows did not receive a DHCP address from the local router, which can result from a disconnected cable, a router fault, a disabled adapter or a DHCP problem. Restore the local connection and inspect the router before concluding that the ISP is responsible.

Should I keep retrying a site that times out?
Repeated refreshes rarely repair a server-side outage and can increase load on an already busy service. Confirm that other sites work, wait a reasonable interval, then use the site owner’s status page or support channel if available.
