If Chrome shows 0x80070057 while installing, updating, or repairing on Windows, start with a restart and a fresh installer from Google. If the normal download fails, use Google’s offline installer, remove the existing Chrome installation, and check security or network controls that can block Google’s updater. The code in the question, 0X800700057, has one extra trailing 7; confirm the exact value in the Windows or Chrome dialog before choosing a fix. Microsoft uses 0x80070057 as a general Windows error associated with damaged files, permissions, or incorrect configuration, not as proof of one Chrome-specific fault.

What does Chrome error 0x80070057 mean?

0x80070057 is a Windows error code, not a documented Chrome-only diagnosis. Google’s Chrome installation and update guidance does not assign one specific root cause to this code. In practice, the failure can occur when the downloaded installer is damaged, Windows is unsupported, an existing Chrome installation conflicts with the new package, permissions are insufficient, or antivirus, firewall, proxy, or parental-control rules block the installer or updater.

First identify where the message appeared:

  • Chrome setup: the browser will not install or the installer reports a repair failure.
  • Chrome update: Chrome is already installed, but an update repeatedly fails.
  • Windows: Windows Update or another system component displays the code independently of Chrome.

The first two paths use Chrome installation remedies. The last path is a Windows-repair problem; Chrome may only have been open when the system error appeared.

What should I check before changing anything?

Confirm the code and Windows edition

Read the dialog again and record the complete code. The standard form is 0x80070057; a value with an additional final digit may be a transcription error or a different code requiring different instructions.

Google currently lists Chrome support for Windows 10 and later on Intel systems, and Windows 11 and later on ARM systems. If the affected computer does not meet that requirement, reinstalling the same package will not make the operating system supported.

Determine whether this is a consumer install or an enterprise MSI repair

Most home users run Google’s regular installer. Organizations may deploy Chrome with a Windows Installer package (MSI). The correct remedy differs: a consumer installer should be replaced with a fresh download, while an MSI repair can fail because Chrome has auto-updated beyond the older MSI package.

How do I fix Chrome 0x80070057 step by step?

1. Restart Windows and retry once

Save your work, restart Windows, and run the installation or update one more time. Google includes a restart in its failed-update guidance because a pending reboot or a locked installer component can prevent a retry. If the same code returns, continue rather than repeatedly launching the same package.

2. Check the connection and supported operating system

Open a normal webpage to confirm that the computer is online, then verify the Windows version and processor type against Google’s current requirements. A supported version and a working connection do not prove that installation will succeed, but they remove two basic causes before you troubleshoot deeper settings.

3. Download a fresh Chrome installer

Discard the installer you already used and download a new copy from Google’s official Chrome download page. Google specifically recommends downloading the installation file again when setup or updates fail. A damaged or incomplete package can reproduce the same code every time, so do not keep reusing it.

  1. Close the failed setup window.
  2. Delete or move the old installer so you do not accidentally open it again.
  3. Download the current installer directly from Google.
  4. Run the new file and follow the setup prompts.

If the download itself stops, produces a tiny file, or fails at the same point, use the offline route below instead of repeatedly retrying the web installer.

4. Use Google’s offline installer

Google provides an installer that can be downloaded on another computer and transferred to the affected PC. This separates obtaining the package from running setup on a machine whose browser, proxy, or security policy may be interfering.

  1. On a working computer, download the official Chrome offline installer for the required Windows architecture.
  2. Transfer the installer to the affected computer using a USB drive or another approved file-transfer method.
  3. Disconnecting the affected PC from the network is optional; the key point is that setup uses the already-downloaded package.
  4. Run the transferred installer and wait for setup to finish.

If the offline package also fails with 0x80070057, the problem is less likely to be a single interrupted web download. Check the existing installation, permissions, and security controls next.

5. Remove a conflicting Chrome installation, then install again

Google recommends uninstalling Chrome before reinstalling when installation or update failures persist. This is especially useful when a partially updated installation is left behind.

  1. Open Settings in Windows.
  2. Go to Apps and then Installed apps (the label may be Apps & features on older Windows versions).
  3. Find Google Chrome, open its menu, and choose Uninstall.
  4. Complete the removal prompts and restart Windows.
  5. Run the fresh regular or offline installer from the preceding steps.

Use the uninstall path only for the Chrome installation that is actually present. If the error appears in Windows Update with no Chrome setup window, uninstalling Chrome does not address the underlying Windows branch.

6. Check antivirus, firewall, proxy, and parental-control rules

Google states that some antivirus software can prevent Chrome from installing. Security products, corporate proxies, firewalls, and parental controls can also block the domains Chrome uses for setup and updates. Google identifies tools.google.com and dl.google.com as traffic that must not be blocked for Chrome update operations.

To test whether security software is the immediate blocker:

  1. Save the installer locally first.
  2. Temporarily pause the relevant web, application, or download protection only for the duration of one installation attempt, following the product’s own controls.
  3. Run the installer once.
  4. Restore protection immediately after the attempt, whether it succeeds or fails.

Do not leave antivirus protection disabled as a general workaround. If pausing it changes the result, create a narrowly scoped allow rule through the security product or ask the organization’s administrator to approve the installer and updater.

For Windows Firewall, Google’s guidance points to the updater.exe executable in the highest-numbered Google updater folder. Allowing the current updater executable, rather than an arbitrary file with a similar name, avoids authorizing an unrelated program. Folder numbers can change as Chrome updates, so recheck the path if a rule that previously worked stops working.

If the computer uses a proxy or parental-control service, check its permitted domains and HTTPS filtering rules. A successful general internet connection does not guarantee that these specific Google endpoints are reachable.

7. Repair an enterprise installation with the current stable MSI

For an organization-managed Chrome deployment, do not assume that the original MSI is still suitable. Chrome Enterprise and Education Help explains that repair can fail after Chrome has auto-updated beyond an older MSI. Its recommended remedy is to download the latest stable MSI and use that package for the repair instead.

  1. Confirm that the affected installation is managed with an MSI rather than the regular consumer installer.
  2. Obtain the latest stable Chrome MSI from the organization’s approved Google Enterprise source.
  3. Run the repair or deployment operation with the permissions required by your organization’s software policy.
  4. If the MSI is managed centrally, have the administrator update the deployment package rather than repeatedly repairing with the obsolete file.

This branch applies to MSI-based enterprise repair. A current MSI does not repair a separate Windows Update failure that merely happens to show the same hexadecimal code.

8. Use Windows repair tools only when Windows reports the code

Microsoft associates 0x80070057 with damaged files, permissions, or configuration problems in Windows. If Windows Update or another Windows component—not Chrome setup—shows the error, Microsoft recommends two system-level actions: run System File Checker from an elevated Command Prompt and run the Windows Update troubleshooter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To run System File Checker:

  1. Open the Start menu and type Command Prompt.
  2. Choose Run as administrator.
  3. Enter sfc /scannow and press Enter.
  4. Wait for the scan to complete, then restart Windows.
  5. Retry the Windows operation that originally produced the code.

Use the Windows Update troubleshooter from Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Windows Update on current Windows 11 builds. Menu names differ on older releases. These tools address Windows integrity and update components; they are not evidence that Chrome itself is damaged and are not a guaranteed Chrome fix.

Which repair route fits my situation?

Situation Best first route What it tests
Regular Chrome will not install Restart, then download a fresh regular installer Locked components and damaged download
Normal download or setup repeatedly fails Transfer and run Google’s offline installer Connectivity, browser, proxy, and download-path problems
Chrome is partly installed or updates fail repeatedly Uninstall Chrome, restart, and reinstall the fresh package Conflicting or incomplete existing installation
Setup changes when antivirus or firewall is paused Restore protection and create a narrow allow rule Security filtering of installer or updater traffic
Company-managed MSI repair fails after Chrome updated Use the latest stable MSI Mismatch between the old repair package and installed version
Windows Update shows the code without Chrome setup Run SFC and the Windows Update troubleshooter Windows files and update components

What should I do if the error returns after reinstalling?

Record the exact stage at which the failure returns: download, setup, first launch, or a later update. A failure during download points back to network and security controls; a failure after Chrome is already present points toward updater permissions, blocked Google endpoints, or an installation that was not fully removed.

Check that the security exception still references the current Google updater executable, especially after Chrome creates a newer numbered updater folder. If an organization controls the PC, provide its administrator with the exact code, Windows edition, Chrome installation context, and whether the offline installer changed the result. Those details distinguish a consumer setup problem from an enterprise policy or MSI problem.

When should I stop treating this as a Chrome problem?

Switch to the Windows branch when the same code appears in Windows Update or another system operation with Chrome closed. Likewise, if SFC reports system-file problems or multiple unrelated applications fail with similar permission or configuration errors, repairing Chrome alone is unlikely to resolve the underlying Windows condition. Complete the Windows troubleshooting path first, then retry Chrome with a fresh package.

Frequently asked questions

Does 0x80070057 prove that Chrome or Windows is infected?

No. The hexadecimal code is a general Windows error associated with files, permissions, or configuration, and it does not identify malware. Security software can block an installer, but that behavior alone is not evidence that the computer is infected.

Can I move the offline installer with a USB drive?

Yes. Google’s offline-install approach allows the package to be downloaded on another computer and transferred to the affected PC; a USB drive is one practical transfer method. Use a trusted, unmodified installer and run it on the supported Windows system.

Why can Chrome open normally while its update still fails?

The browser and its updater use different operations and network requests. Chrome may continue running while firewall, proxy, antivirus, or permissions prevent the updater from reaching Google’s update endpoints or replacing files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does an older MSI stop repairing Chrome after an automatic update?

The installed Chrome version can become newer than the version represented by the original MSI. In that enterprise scenario, Chrome Enterprise and Education Help recommends downloading the latest stable MSI and using it for the repair.
