Chrome’s “Not enough memory to open this page,” “Chrome ran out of memory,” and “Aw, Snap!” messages usually mean your computer does not have enough available memory at that moment, or that a tab, extension, browser profile, or graphics setting has failed. Start by closing unused tabs and other applications, pausing downloads, reloading the page, and restarting Chrome. Then test the page in Incognito, disable extensions, clear browsing data, and enable desktop Memory Saver. If crashes continue, test hardware acceleration, reset Chrome, and reinstall it. A RAM upgrade is worth considering only when your operating system still shows consistently low available memory after these software checks.

What does Chrome’s “not enough memory” error mean?

Chrome needs working memory (RAM) for page code, images, video, extensions, browser processes, and the operating system itself. The error appears when the device cannot provide enough available memory for a page or when a particular browser process becomes unstable. Google explains that insufficient available memory can reduce performance and lead to page crashes and loading errors; cookies, extensions, and memory usage can all contribute to loading failures.

The message does not by itself prove that your RAM module is defective, that Chrome is permanently damaged, or that a website is unsafe. A single page may be unusually demanding, an extension may interfere with it, or several applications may have consumed the available memory. Work through the least disruptive checks first so you can identify the cause without losing browser data.

What should I do first when Chrome runs out of memory?

Free memory immediately, reload the page, and restart Chrome before changing settings. These steps are quick, reversible, and address the most common temporary cause.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Close unused tabs. Save anything important, then close tabs you are not using, especially pages with video, web games, large documents, or many live updates.
  2. Quit other applications. Close programs you do not need right now. A browser can report a memory problem even when Chrome itself is not the only heavy application.
  3. Pause downloads and transfers. Stop active downloads, cloud synchronisation jobs, and other intensive transfers temporarily, then reload the affected tab.
  4. Reload the page. Use the reload control or your normal keyboard shortcut. If only the tab failed, a reload may recreate its browser process cleanly.
  5. Restart Chrome. Close every Chrome window and open the browser again. If the message returns, restart the computer to release memory held by other processes.

If the error disappears after a restart but returns later, note what was open at the time. Repeated failures after a clean start point toward a specific site, extension, browser setting, or genuinely low system memory rather than a one-off shortage.

Is only one website causing the crash?

Check several unrelated sites after restarting Chrome. If other pages load normally while one page repeatedly fails, Google says the site itself might be the cause; contact its owner or use the site’s reporting channel rather than changing your entire Chrome installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to distinguish a site problem

  • Open a simple page, a different news site, and another page on the same service.
  • Try the failing address again after closing other tabs.
  • Check whether the same page fails in another browser or on another device, if one is available.

A page that fails everywhere may have its own script, media, or server problem. A page that fails only in your normal Chrome profile requires the profile and extension checks below.

How does Incognito testing help?

Open the same address in an Incognito window. If it works there, the normal profile’s extensions or stored browsing data become the leading suspects; if it fails there too, continue with memory, site, graphics, and Chrome repair checks.

Open an Incognito window

  1. Open Chrome’s three-dot menu.
  2. Choose New Incognito window.
  3. Enter the same address and reproduce the action that caused the error.

Incognito is an isolation test, not a permanent fix. Do not assume that a successful Incognito load proves the website is harmless or that every extension is disabled in every configuration. Use the result to decide whether to investigate your normal profile.

How do I find an extension that consumes memory or breaks a page?

Disable all extensions, reload the failing page, and then restore extensions one at a time. The extension that brings the failure back is the one to remove, replace, or leave disabled.

  1. Open Chrome’s three-dot menu and choose Extensions, then Manage extensions.
  2. Turn off every extension with its toggle. Keep the page you are testing available in another tab if possible.
  3. Reload the affected page.
  4. If the page now works, turn extensions on individually, reloading after each change.
  5. When the error returns, turn off the last extension enabled. Remove it or look for a maintained replacement.

If the page still fails with every extension disabled, extensions are unlikely to be the immediate trigger. Leave only trusted, necessary extensions enabled while you continue testing; a large collection can increase memory use even when no single extension is solely responsible.

Should I clear Chrome’s cache, cookies, and history?

Clear browsing data when Incognito works, extensions are not responsible, or a page keeps failing because stored data may be damaged. Start with cached files if you want the least disruptive reset, then include cookies and history only when needed.

Clear browsing data

  1. Open Chrome’s three-dot menu and select Delete browsing data.
  2. Choose a time range appropriate to the problem. A broader range removes more stored data.
  3. Select cached files first. Add cookies and other site data or browsing history if the problem persists or the page’s stored session appears corrupted.
  4. Confirm deletion, close the dialog, and reload the page.

Deleting cookies can sign you out of websites and remove site-specific preferences. Make sure you know your sign-in details before selecting cookies or other site data. Clearing browsing data does not replace the extension test: an extension can recreate the failure after the cache is gone.

How do I use Chrome Memory Saver on a computer?

On desktop Chrome, Memory Saver deactivates tabs you are not currently using and reloads them when you return. It can preserve available memory for active tabs, but a deactivated tab may need to reload and can lose unsaved state on the page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Turn on and adjust Memory Saver

  1. Open Chrome’s three-dot menu and choose Settings.
  2. Select Performance.
  3. Open Memory Saver and choose a level: Moderate, Balanced (recommended), or Maximum.
  4. Return to the affected page and test it. Keep the setting that balances responsiveness with how often you revisit inactive tabs.

Balanced is Google’s recommended level. Maximum can deactivate inactive tabs more aggressively; Moderate is less aggressive. Memory Saver cannot create additional physical RAM, so it will not cure a page that fails because of a site-specific bug or a damaged profile. If a page must remain active for a timer, upload, meeting, or game, avoid relying on deactivation alone and save work before leaving it.

Could hardware acceleration be behind the crashes?

When failures appear during video playback, 3D content, scrolling, or other graphics-heavy actions, test Chrome without hardware acceleration. This setting changes how Chrome uses the graphics system, so the test is reversible and should be followed by a restart.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  1. Open Chrome’s three-dot menu and select Settings.
  2. Choose System.
  3. Turn off Use hardware acceleration when available.
  4. Restart Chrome completely, then open the page again.

If the error stops, leave acceleration off temporarily and check whether graphics-driver or browser updates later restore stable operation. If there is no change, turn the option back on and continue; disabling it is not a general memory-reduction guarantee and may alter video or graphics performance.

When should I reset Chrome settings?

Reset Chrome after you have tested memory, the website, Incognito, extensions, browsing data, Memory Saver, and hardware acceleration. A reset returns browser settings to their defaults without requiring a full reinstall, making it a useful boundary between profile troubleshooting and rebuilding Chrome.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reset the browser

  1. Open Chrome’s three-dot menu and select Settings.
  2. Open the settings area for resetting or restoring settings and choose Reset settings to their original defaults.
  3. Read the confirmation screen carefully and confirm the reset.
  4. Restart Chrome and test the failing page before restoring custom settings or extensions.

After the reset, re-enable extensions one at a time and change settings gradually. This makes it possible to identify the setting that causes the error instead of recreating the same failure immediately.

Should I reinstall Chrome?

Reinstall Chrome only when the error persists after a reset or the installation itself appears damaged. Reinstalling is more disruptive than the earlier steps, but it gives you a clean browser installation.

  1. Record any settings or extensions you need to restore and confirm that important bookmarks or other Chrome data are synchronised or backed up.
  2. Uninstall Chrome using your operating system’s normal app-removal controls.
  3. Download and install Chrome again from Google’s official distribution channel.
  4. Sign in if you use Chrome sync. Google says information saved in your Google Account remains available after signing in again.
  5. Test the problematic page before reinstalling every extension or applying all custom settings.

If a clean installation still fails on one site, the website or the device’s available memory is more likely than a damaged Chrome program. If many programs show memory-related failures, investigate the operating system and hardware rather than repeatedly reinstalling the browser.

What should phone users do?

Chrome’s performance settings cannot be personalised on iOS or Android, so do not look for the desktop Settings > Performance > Memory Saver path on a phone. Use the general isolation approach instead: close unused tabs and other apps, reload the page, restart Chrome and the phone, and test whether the problem affects one website or many.

Run the Incognito test where your mobile Chrome version provides it. If the page works there, review extensions or stored site data using the mobile browser’s available controls; if it fails only on one service, contact that site. For device-specific mobile instructions, use Google’s Chrome mobile troubleshooting guidance rather than applying desktop menu paths that are not available on iOS or Android.

Do I need more RAM?

Consider a RAM upgrade only after software checks show that the computer still has genuinely low available memory during ordinary use. The Chrome message is evidence of a shortage at the time of failure, not proof that an upgrade is compatible or necessary.

Check before buying

  • Device type: confirm whether the computer accepts laptop memory modules or desktop modules.
  • RAM generation: match the required generation, such as DDR4 or DDR5; generations are not interchangeable.
  • Capacity limits: check the computer or motherboard’s maximum supported capacity and the number of available slots.
  • Installation requirements: verify whether opening the device affects service coverage and whether you are comfortable installing the module safely.
  • Current usage: observe available memory during the failures instead of buying solely because one page displayed “Aw, Snap!”.

A compatible RAM upgrade addresses a persistent device-wide memory constraint. It will not repair a broken extension, a corrupt cache, a graphics conflict, or a website that crashes for every visitor.

Which fix should I try for my situation?

The table below shows how the remedies differ in cause, reversibility, data impact, device availability, and purchase requirements.

What if none of these steps works?

Document the exact wording, the page address, whether other sites fail, the number of tabs and applications open, and whether Incognito changes the result. That record helps separate a site report from a Chrome profile problem or a device-wide memory shortage.

  • Use the Chrome Help Forum when you need community troubleshooting for a persistent browser failure.
  • Report the issue through Chrome’s available feedback or reporting controls when the documented steps fail.
  • Contact the website owner if only that service fails.
  • Seek computer support when multiple applications crash, the operating system reports low memory outside Chrome, or a RAM installation requires opening the device.

Do not keep deleting cookies or reinstalling Chrome if the same page fails in another browser and on another device; that pattern points away from your Chrome installation.

Chrome memory error FAQ

Can a single tab really use enough memory to crash Chrome?

Yes. A page can combine large media, complex scripts, web-based applications, and extensions that interact with it. If closing that tab restores normal operation while simpler pages remain stable, treat the site or its content as the first suspect rather than assuming the whole browser is defective.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does Chrome show “Aw, Snap!” instead of “not enough memory”?

“Aw, Snap!” is a general page-crash message and can accompany memory pressure, a failed browser process, an extension conflict, or a graphics-related crash. The troubleshooting sequence is the same: free memory, isolate the site and extensions, then test settings and reset options.

Will Memory Saver keep a page from losing its form entries?

Memory Saver may deactivate an inactive tab and reload it when you return. Save drafts, uploads, and other unsaved work before leaving a tab that you cannot afford to reload.

Is buying faster RAM the same as adding more RAM?

No. A faster module may not be supported by the computer, while adding capacity addresses the amount of available memory. Match the device’s supported generation, capacity, and module type before purchasing; compatibility matters more than a speed label alone.

Should I report a memory error to the website or to Google?

Report it to the website when one service fails while other sites work, because its page may be the trigger. Use Chrome’s help or feedback channels when several unrelated sites fail after you have tested extensions, stored data, settings, and available device memory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
