If the library opens but one game will not start, note the exact error or where the failure occurs; that distinction helps narrow the next step.
Start with Nintendo’s basic checks
- Reconnect and retry. Connect the Switch 2 to the internet, then try opening the NES Nintendo Classics library again. Nintendo recommends an internet connection and a retry when a Classics library will not start. Nintendo’s troubleshooting steps cover this issue.
- Verify the membership on the account being used. NES Nintendo Classics is part of Nintendo Switch Online. Make sure the Nintendo Account used on the console has an active Nintendo Switch Online or Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. Nintendo lists an active membership as a requirement for its NES, Super NES, and Game Boy Classics libraries. See Nintendo’s Nintendo Classics FAQ.
- Check for a service issue. Review Nintendo’s support guidance for the network-status check and consult Nintendo’s network status page for maintenance or outages. If service is affected, retry after it is restored.
If Switch 2 says it could not connect to the internet
Nintendo explains that NES and Super NES software may need an internet connection at startup to verify membership, even though classic games can be played offline. For the “Could not Connect to the Internet” startup message, Nintendo’s guidance is to restart the console, connect it to the internet, and open the software again. Nintendo UK’s troubleshooting instructions describe these steps.

Offline play still requires the console to verify the membership online every seven days. If the membership has expired, access to the Classics requires an active membership; Nintendo says save data remains on the console after a membership expires. Pinpoint where the failure happens
If the basic checks do not fix it, use the symptom to describe the problem rather than assuming a cause:

- The Classics library will not open: focus first on internet access, the membership tied to the account in use, and Nintendo network status.
- The library opens, but one NES game will not start: note whether the failure affects only that game or others too, and record any exact message or error code.
- Only one account has the problem: check that account’s membership. If the same issue occurs across accounts, note that when contacting support; it does not by itself establish the cause.
- An error code appears: search Nintendo Support using the exact code, since code-specific guidance can identify a different next step.

When to contact Nintendo Support
Contact Nintendo Support if reconnecting, confirming the membership, and checking network status do not restore access, or if Nintendo’s instructions for the exact error code do not help. Include the Switch 2 model, the account and membership status checked, whether the library opens, whether the issue affects one or multiple games, and the exact error message or code. Those details help support distinguish a library startup problem from a game-specific failure.
