QSSR stands for Quick Spectral Super Resolution, an AI-upscaling feature Sony announced for the standard PlayStation 5 on October 1, 2026. Sony has not announced QSSR support for Radeon desktop graphics cards, a PC driver, or a release plan for PC. The fact that QSSR grew out of a Sony–AMD collaboration does not establish Radeon compatibility.
What QSSR is
Sony describes QSSR as a new performance tier of AI upscaling for PS5, developed from Project Amethyst, its AI graphics collaboration with AMD. Daniel Craig, Principal Engineer, Graphics R&D at Sony Interactive Entertainment, called it “a new performance tier of AI upscaling” in the PlayStation Blog announcement.

Sony names Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first games using the QSSR library. The announcement presents QSSR as a PS5 technology; it does not describe a PC version.
How QSSR works on PS5
Sony says QSSR uses a streamlined neural-network architecture and a hand-tuned implementation designed to maximize performance on PS5. The stated aim is to improve image detail and stability while making AI upscaling less demanding than the earlier PSSR approach. These are Sony’s qualitative claims: the announcement does not publish QSSR benchmarks, internal rendering resolutions, or detailed model architecture.

In practical terms, an upscaler reconstructs a higher-resolution-looking image from a lower-resolution game image, helping balance visual quality and rendering workload. Sony has not provided enough implementation detail to explain QSSR’s reconstruction process more specifically.
Does QSSR work on Radeon graphics cards?
Radeon PC support is not established. Sony’s announcement covers standard PS5 and does not identify compatible Radeon cards, PC drivers, software requirements, or expected performance on a desktop GPU. Project Amethyst’s connection to AMD is background about the collaboration, not a compatibility promise. A Radeon owner should not expect to enable QSSR through AMD Software or a game setting based on the announcement.

What Radeon users can use instead
AMD has two distinct upscaling options that are relevant to PC gaming, but neither is QSSR. AMD describes FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) as game-integrated and Radeon Super Resolution (RSR) as a driver feature. AMD recommends a game’s built-in FSR when available, since game-specific optimizations may produce better upscaling than RSR.
| Technology | How it is applied | Key requirement or caveat |
|---|---|---|
| QSSR | Sony’s AI-upscaling library for standard PS5 | Radeon desktop support, drivers, and PC requirements have not been announced by Sony. |
| AMD FSR | Integrated into a supported game | Availability depends on the game; AMD recommends its built-in FSR option over RSR where supported. See AMD’s FSR overview. |
| AMD RSR | Enabled through AMD Software at driver level | Requires supported Radeon hardware, software, and a compatible fullscreen setup. See AMD’s RSR support article. |
RSR compatibility and activation conditions
AMD’s support article lists Windows 10 or Windows 11 desktop systems with discrete Radeon RX 5000 Series or later graphics, plus select AMD Advantage systems, and a full Adrenalin installation version 22.7.1 or later. RSR activates when a game runs below the monitor’s native resolution and uses a compatible fullscreen mode. These are RSR requirements, not QSSR requirements.

What is—and is not—known about QSSR on PC
- Established: Sony announced QSSR for standard PS5 and named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as its first games.
- Not established: compatibility with Radeon desktop cards, supported GPU models, a PC driver or software release, and Radeon-specific image-quality or performance results.
- Published figures: Sony’s announcement gives no numeric QSSR benchmark or image-quality result, so there is no official basis for comparing its performance on Radeon hardware.
If your goal is to use the QSSR feature Sony announced, the specified platform is standard PS5. For Radeon PC gaming, check whether the game offers FSR; use RSR only when its system and display conditions are met.
