The publisher also describes its exploration as Metroidvania-style. Those features make it possible to compare the game’s stated direction with the genre; they do not establish how difficult, long, or successful it is, or how its finished design measures up to any particular rival.
What makes Valor Mortis different from the Soulslike baseline?
The clearest distinction is the viewpoint. The publisher describes Valor Mortis as a first-person action Soulslike, rather than presenting the familiar third-person perspective common in many prominent genre comparisons. That changes how players see the action, but the official descriptions do not show that first-person combat is inherently easier, harder, or more immersive.

Its setting is another defining feature: the publisher frames the game as a supernatural reimagining of 19th-century Europe during the Napoleonic era. You play William, a resurrected soldier of the Grande Armée, in a story shaped by war, plague, and horror. The announced characters include Napoleon, rebel leader the Shrike, fellow soldier James Stewart, and lamplighter Lucjan Skawiński. These details give the game a historical-fantasy identity rather than a conventional medieval one.
For those features, see the Steam game page and the publisher’s official announcements.

How does its advertised combat compare?
The publisher describes combat as skill- and stamina-based, with parries, dashes, visceral finishers, dual-wielding, period melee weapons such as rapiers, flintlock pistols, and supernatural abilities. PlayStation’s official description also highlights parries, dashes, finishers, weapons, and powers.
That mix gives Valor Mortis a distinctive advertised toolkit: close-range weapons and firearms sit alongside powers, within a combat system that calls attention to timing and stamina. It is a useful way to distinguish the game’s intended combat from a Soulslike built around a different set of weapons or abilities. But feature lists cannot establish how well the options work together, whether any weapon or power is balanced, or how combat feels in practice. The publisher’s description of death as a step toward mastery is promotional framing, not independent evidence about the game’s difficulty or progression.

What is known about exploration and progression?
The publisher calls the level approach “Metroidvania-style” and promotes mobility, environmental secrets, and ways to outmaneuver enemies. That signals an exploration focus beyond simply moving from fight to fight, but it does not establish the finished map’s degree of interconnectedness, how much backtracking it requires, or how routes compare with those in other games.

Those details should not be inferred from the phrase alone.
How should you compare it with named Soulslikes?
Compare Valor Mortis against another game on specific, documented features—not shorthand such as “Sekiro with guns” or “first-person Lies of P.” The available official descriptions establish Valor Mortis’s perspective, setting, combat ingredients, and advertised exploration style; they do not establish the mechanics of those peers or a direct ranking.
- Perspective: Is the other game first-person or third-person? This is the strongest confirmed point of distinction for Valor Mortis.
- Setting and tone: Compare historical fantasy, horror, or other themes only when the other game’s setting is documented.
- Combat options: Compare weapons, ranged attacks, powers, parries, and movement as features. Their presence alone does not prove greater depth or better balance.
- Exploration: Compare routes, secrets, and backtracking only when reliable information about the full games supports it.
- Difficulty and length: Official descriptions do not provide a measured comparison for either.
When is Valor Mortis coming out, and where?
The publisher’s later update, dated August 25, 2026, gives October 13, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S|X, and Steam, and says the game is planned for day-one Xbox Game Pass. This supersedes the earlier June 7 announcement, which had listed September 24, 2026. Release dates and subscription catalogs can change, so check the publisher’s latest announcement and the relevant storefront for current availability.

The official US PlayStation listing also describes one-player and offline play, and support for DualSense vibration and trigger effects. That is a feature listing, not a requirement for a special controller.

Official sources establish a clear concept: first-person Soulslike combat in a supernatural Napoleonic setting, with melee weapons, firearms, supernatural powers, and exploration the publisher calls Metroidvania-style. They do not establish comparative difficulty, quality, completion time, review scores, performance, or how the finished level design compares with named games. Until those points are supported by reliable full-game evidence, the most accurate comparison is about the design Valor Mortis advertises—not a verdict that it is harder, better, longer, or more interconnected than its peers.
