A Steam Free Weekend is temporary access to a paid game’s full base version, not a permanent copy. When the event ends, Steam removes the temporary free package. The game can remain visible in your library, but the event license no longer launches it; you must buy the full version to continue.
Free to Play (F2P) is a different licensing model. An F2P title is offered as a free download under a free license, so it is not governed by a Free Weekend countdown. Optional purchases, downloadable content (DLC), or other paid items may still exist.

The short answer: two different licenses
Steam uses similar “free” language for two fundamentally different offers. A Free Weekend temporarily attaches a free package to an existing paid game. Free to Play makes the game available under a free download license. The distinction determines what remains playable after a promotion, what you need to purchase, and whether a deadline applies.

- Free Weekend: a time-limited event that normally opens the complete base game for a specified period.
- Free to Play: an ongoing free license for downloading and using the title, subject to that game’s own content and purchase rules.

How a Steam Free Weekend works
It uses the game’s existing App ID
A Free Weekend is not normally a separate demo build. Steam grants temporary access to the full base game through the title’s current App ID. During the event, a temporary free package appears alongside the standard paid package on the game’s store page.
That arrangement is why the event can feel like owning the game: you download the ordinary game client, enter the same game environment, and can evaluate the base experience rather than a specially limited demo. It does not, however, change the underlying paid license into a permanent one.
The event has a fixed window
Steam describes a typical Free Weekend as a long four-day weekend, using Thursday at 10:00 a.m. Pacific through Monday at 10:00 a.m. Pacific as its example schedule. Those times are a pattern, not a universal rule. A publisher can set a different start or end time, and the current event page is authoritative for that particular promotion.

For an active event, Steam displays a callout indicating how much time remains. Use that countdown and the game’s current announcement rather than assuming every promotion follows the Thursday-to-Monday example. Time zones, regional availability, and event-specific scheduling can make an apparently similar promotion end at a different local time.
What you receive during the event
The free package gives temporary access to the full base game. “Full base game” does not automatically mean every expansion, cosmetic, season pass, or separately sold add-on. DLC and in-game purchases are separate commercial items unless the publisher explicitly includes them in the event.
What happens when the Free Weekend ends?
Steam removes the temporary package
At the event deadline, Steam automatically removes the free package from the store page. This is a license change on Steam’s servers; leaving the game installed does not preserve the temporary entitlement.

Steam’s official documentation states: “Once the Free Weekend ends, the free package is automatically removed from your store page. Players who participated will still see your game listed in their Steam libraries, but they’ll only be able to uninstall it – continued play requires purchasing the full version.”

The library entry may remain
Participants can still see the game listed in their Steam libraries after the event. That listing is not proof that the free license is still active. The entry provides a way to manage the installation, but the expired package does not grant ongoing play.
You can uninstall, but not keep playing on the event package
Once access expires, the documented action available on the lingering library entry is to uninstall the game. Launching the title through the expired temporary package will not provide continued access. Installing it again, moving the files to another drive, or leaving the client open past the deadline cannot turn the event package into a permanent license.
Buying the full version restores continued access
To keep playing, purchase the full game license shown on the store page. After the purchase is registered to your account, Steam can replace the temporary event entitlement with the paid license. Any purchase decision should be based on the current store listing, because the event’s discount, if one is offered, is tied to that promotion and may have its own end time.
Can I keep playing a Steam Free Weekend game after it ends?
Not on the temporary package. Steam’s documented answer is that continued play requires purchasing the full version. The installation may remain on your storage and the title may remain visible in your library, but neither condition extends the license.

Likewise, changing computers, reinstalling Steam, or switching regions does not create a new Free Weekend entitlement. The promotion is attached to the event and the account’s participation, not to a particular installation.
What “Free to Play” means on Steam
An ongoing free download license
Steam’s Free to Play documentation describes an F2P game as free for customers to download under a free license. The model itself has no Free Weekend expiration. As long as the title remains offered under that license and your account meets the game’s normal requirements, downloading and playing are not controlled by a promotional weekend clock.
Free does not mean every item is free
An F2P license covers the free portion of the game, not necessarily every available item or feature. Steam notes that some F2P titles include in-game purchases. Those can include cosmetic items, playable content, progression aids, currency, passes, or other products defined by the individual game. The exact inventory and prices are set by the publisher and can change.
DLC and purchases can exist in either model
Steam describes DLC and in-game purchases as ways to sell content for both free-to-play and paid games. A paid game can charge separately for expansions or optional items, while an F2P game can offer a no-cost core download alongside paid additions. Therefore, the presence of a purchase button does not by itself tell you whether a title is F2P or a Free Weekend participant; check the license and event wording on the store page.
F2P is not a promotional trial
A Free Weekend temporarily exposes a paid base game. F2P is the title’s continuing distribution model. If a game is labeled Free to Play, the absence of a countdown is expected; if it is labeled as a Free Weekend, the countdown is the important limitation even when the download looks identical to the paid game.

Free Weekend costs
During the event, downloading and playing the temporary package does not require buying the base game first. The cost question arrives when the event ends: continued access requires the full-version purchase. Steam may pair a Free Weekend with a discount, but the discount is an event-specific offer. Confirm its price and expiry on the live store page rather than assuming the event’s end time and the sale’s end time are identical.

F2P costs
An F2P game can be played under its free license, but optional purchases may monetize additional content. Read the store page and in-game purchase descriptions to determine what is included at no charge. “Free to Play” does not promise that all characters, maps, cosmetics, expansions, or convenience features are unlocked for free.

DLC and in-game purchases are not exclusive to F2P titles. A paid game may sell expansions or optional items, and an F2P game may do the same around its free core. The key distinction is whether the base license itself is temporary (Free Weekend), permanently free while offered (F2P), or paid from the outset.
How to check the exact deadline before you start
- Open the game’s current Steam store page rather than relying on a search result or an old promotion announcement.
- Look for the Free Weekend callout and the displayed time remaining.
- Open the linked announcement if the page provides one; use its stated end time for event-specific conditions.
- Convert the deadline to your local time and leave a buffer if you are downloading a large game or planning a long session.
- Check whether a displayed purchase discount has a separate end time before deciding to wait.
The Thursday 10:00 a.m. Pacific to Monday 10:00 a.m. Pacific pattern is Steam’s typical example, not a guarantee. The live page for the game you are considering is the source to follow.
A practical checklist for players
Before downloading
- Confirm that the store page says Free Weekend rather than Free to Play or Demo.
- Record the event’s displayed end time in your own time zone.
- Read the page for any stated base-game, DLC, or purchase limitations.
- Check available storage and download time so the event does not expire before you can launch the game.
While the event is active
- Play the content you need to evaluate before the countdown reaches zero.
- Keep notes on whether your interest depends on DLC or other separately sold content.
- If you are considering buying, compare the event price and its deadline with the normal full-version listing.
After the deadline
- Expect the temporary package to lose its play entitlement.
- Do not mistake a remaining library icon or installed files for ownership.
- Purchase the full version if you want to resume playing; otherwise uninstall the event package to reclaim storage.
Troubleshooting common misunderstandings
“The game is still in my library, so why can’t I launch it?”
The library entry can persist after the temporary package is removed. Steam distinguishes the visible library listing from an active paid license. The entry supports uninstalling the files, while continued play requires the full purchase.
“I downloaded the full game, so shouldn’t I own it?”
A download is not the same as a permanent license. Free Weekend participants receive temporary access to the paid game’s package. The files can be identical to those used by owners, but the account entitlement still expires with the event.
“The event ended, but the files are still on my drive.”
Local files do not preserve a server-validated entitlement. You can remove them through the library entry. Reinstalling the same files without purchasing the full version will not extend the event license.

“The store page says the game is free. Is it F2P?”
Check the surrounding wording and countdown. A Free Weekend can make a normally paid game temporarily free, while an F2P title is offered under a free license without a weekend expiration. The page’s license label and event callout resolve the ambiguity.
“Can I assume every Free Weekend lasts four days?”
No. Steam gives a long four-day weekend as a typical schedule, but each event can use its own dates and times. Follow the current timer and announcement for the title.
Why Free Weekend dates and availability vary
Free Weekends are organized promotions rather than a permanent store category. Steam’s developer documentation says these events generally require Steam Team approval and recommends that developers contact Steam at least a month in advance when arranging one. That process helps explain why games do not all use the same dates and why a publisher’s announcement is important.

Steam also says eligible games can generally run a Free Weekend once per calendar year. “Generally” matters: it describes the platform’s guidance, not a promise that every title will receive an event or that every event will follow an identical schedule.
After an event, developers can inspect participation, conversion rates, and other metrics in the Steamworks Dashboard. Steam does not publish a universal conversion percentage in the documentation, so a result from one game or one event should not be treated as a platform-wide average.
Choosing the right expectation
If you want to test a paid game
Treat a Free Weekend as a timed evaluation. Start with the assumption that access ends at the posted deadline, and make your purchase decision before then if you want uninterrupted play. The event is useful precisely because it exposes the full base game without requiring an upfront purchase, but it is not a way to add that game permanently for free.
If you want a game you can return to later
Look for the Free to Play designation rather than a Free Weekend callout. An F2P license is designed for ongoing free access while the title remains offered under that model. Still review optional purchases and DLC so you know which parts of the experience are outside the free license.
If you are comparing two store pages
Ask three questions in order: What license am I receiving, what date or timer limits it, and which content is excluded or sold separately? A temporary package, a free license, and paid add-ons can appear together on a store page, but they answer different questions about ownership and future access.
Bottom line
A Steam Free Weekend ends by removing the temporary free package. The game may stay listed in your library, but the event entitlement no longer supports play; buying the full version is required. Free to Play is not a weekend promotion at all: it is an ongoing free download license that may coexist with optional in-game purchases or DLC. Always use the specific game’s live store-page timer and purchase terms, because Steam’s four-day example is only a typical schedule.
