For low FPS, stutter, frame-time spikes, or long loading pauses in an Unreal Engine game, first identify what is limiting that particular PC and game. Measure the problem in a repeatable scene, then test one relevant change at a time. Lowering graphics settings can help when the GPU is overloaded; it will not reliably fix CPU, memory, storage, network, or shader-compilation issues.
Identify what kind of performance problem you have
“Bad performance” can mean several different things. Note when the issue occurs and whether it affects one game or several: that gives you a useful starting point, but does not prove the cause.

- Consistently low FPS: The game struggles throughout a scene. The CPU or GPU may be unable to keep up with the work, or the system may be constrained by memory or another resource.
- Brief hitches or frame-time spikes: The game pauses momentarily, often around new effects or locations. Shader compilation is one possible cause; other CPU, memory, or storage activity can also contribute.
- Loading pauses: Frequent access to the game’s drive can delay operations, though a pause alone does not establish that storage is the bottleneck.
- Choppiness mainly in online play: Network bandwidth is one possible constraint. Do not assume an FPS setting will resolve an online-only symptom.
Epic’s Unreal Engine 5.8 profiling guide describes performance profiling as analyzing resource use, including CPU and GPU processing, memory, and network bandwidth. It also identifies RAM, VRAM, and hard-drive access as possible constraints.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Measure before changing settings
Compare the same gameplay section at the same settings before and after a change. A built-in FPS or performance overlay, if the game provides one, can help you see whether the symptom changes. Some games also expose Unreal Engine stat commands, but retail versions do not necessarily make every profiling feature available.

Reducing resolution or GPU-heavy quality settings is a useful diagnostic test: if performance improves materially, investigate a GPU limit. That result is evidence, not proof; a settings change can affect several kinds of work. If it makes no useful difference, restore the settings and investigate another likely cause instead of continuing to lower image quality.
Developers can use Unreal Insights to record frame-by-frame performance data and investigate CPU, memory, or network timing. Profiling tools also consume system resources, so attached profiling can slightly worsen performance. Epic explains these tools and the distinction between CPU-bound and GPU-bound work in its profiling documentation.

Try safe checks in order
- Check the game’s requirements and updates. Confirm that your PC meets the title’s published system requirements and that the game is patched. Note whether the issue began after a game or graphics-driver update; that timing helps support teams investigate, but does not by itself identify the cause.
- Check background activity and laptop settings. Close unnecessary resource-heavy apps, especially if the PC is near the game’s minimum requirements. On a laptop, check that the game is using the dedicated GPU and that the system is not in a restrictive power mode.
- Test a modest graphics change. Lower resolution or demanding quality settings, then replay the same section. Keep the change only if it meaningfully improves the symptom; otherwise restore your preferred settings.
- Check the graphics driver. Consult the GPU maker for a current driver. If the problem began with a specific driver, check the game and GPU vendors’ support guidance before considering a rollback; a newer driver is not automatically better for every game.
- Verify the game installation when available. Use the launcher or platform’s supported file-verification feature if the title offers one. The exact path differs by platform and game.
- Report repeatable hitches. If a hitch consistently occurs when a new location or effect appears, send the game developer the game version, PC hardware details, and steps to reproduce it.
These are general checks, not guaranteed fixes for every Unreal Engine game. EA’s PC graphics troubleshooting guidance covers Windows updates, graphics settings, dedicated-GPU selection on laptops, driver checks, system requirements, and background programs. Epic’s separate instructions for low frame rate in Fortnite are specific to Fortnite and Epic Launcher; follow the individual game’s support instructions for other titles.

Understand shader-compilation stutter
A game may hitch when it has to compile a shader immediately before using it. Epic’s Unreal Engine documentation says “the act of compiling shaders can result in significant processing spikes, which in turn causes momentary but noticeable framerate hitches.” The engine may have to wait for the graphics driver to finish compiling, interrupting frame delivery.

Epic’s engineering article “Game engines and shader stuttering: Unreal Engine’s solution to the problem”, published February 4, 2025, describes PSO (pipeline state object) precaching as a developer-side way to prepare graphics pipeline states so they are available later and reduce runtime compilation. Unreal Engine documentation also discusses collecting these states through testing or automatic precaching. How much this helps depends on the game and its implementation; there is no universal player-side toggle that fixes shader stutter in every title.
Match the next step to the likely bottleneck
| What you observe | What to investigate | Reasonable next step |
|---|---|---|
| Lower resolution or GPU-heavy settings materially improve performance | Possible GPU limit | Compare settings in the same scene and consult the game’s requirements and official support guidance before considering a hardware change. |
| Performance remains poor after a graphics reduction | CPU work, RAM, another constraint, or a limit the game does not expose | Restore settings and check overlays, background tasks, and the game’s support resources. A settings change alone cannot diagnose the cause. |
| Hitches recur as new effects or locations appear | Shader compilation is one possibility; other runtime work may also cause spikes | Record where it happens and report a repeatable case to the developer with version and hardware details. |
| Pauses coincide with loading or frequent drive access | Possible storage-related delay | Check the game’s requirements and whether measurements point to storage before replacing a drive. |
| Choppiness is mainly an online-play issue | Network conditions may be relevant | Compare with offline or non-networked gameplay where possible, and consult the game’s support guidance. |
Know when hardware is—and is not—the answer
Epic lists frequent hard-drive access as one possible performance constraint, but that does not mean an SSD or NVMe drive will raise FPS on an undiagnosed PC. Consider storage changes only when evidence points to loading or drive access, or when the game’s requirements justify replacing the existing drive. Likewise, RAM or GPU upgrades should follow a specific diagnosis rather than a general promise that more hardware will cure stutter.

Epic’s documentation notes that filling RAM can lead to out-of-memory errors or additional cleanup work, while VRAM pressure can arise from texture memory. These are reasons to investigate memory use, not proof that a particular upgrade is needed. The available sources do not establish a typical FPS gain for any of these fixes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAvoid risky generic “fixes”
Do not treat undocumented configuration edits, registry changes, deleting shader caches, disabling security tools, or raising process priority as universal remedies. The guidance cited here does not establish those steps as safe or effective across Unreal Engine games. Use the game’s official support channel for title-specific instructions instead.
