Yes—Box86 can run some 32-bit x86 Linux games on ARM computers, including Raspberry Pi models covered by its build guide. It is a compatibility layer, not a way to make every x86 game work: you need a 32-bit-capable Linux environment, the game’s required libraries, and a compatible graphics stack. Support depends on the specific game and setup.

What Box86 does—and which games it targets

The Box86 project describes itself as software that lets you run “x86 Linux programs (such as games) on non-x86 Linux systems, like ARM (host system needs to be 32bit little-endian).” In practical terms, Box86 translates instructions for 32-bit x86 Linux programs so an ARM Linux computer can run them. It does not turn an ARM system into a general-purpose x86 PC, and it does not guarantee compatibility with a game just because that game runs on Linux.

The project README names World of Goo, Airline Tycoon Deluxe, and FTL, as well as GameMaker games including Undertale, A Risk of Rain, and Cook Serve Delicious, as examples that work in its stated context. Treat these as titles worth checking, not as guarantees for your board, Linux distribution, graphics driver, or game version. Consult the Box86 project README and compatibility information for reports relevant to your setup.

Check these requirements before installing

A 32-bit-capable ARM userspace

Box86 needs a 32-bit environment; a 64-bit-only ARM installation is not sufficient. On a 64-bit ARM Linux system, the project’s guidance describes approaches such as 32-bit multiarch support or a chroot, with the required 32-bit libraries available. Box86 does not provide general translation from 32-bit libraries to 64-bit libraries, so having a 64-bit operating system alone does not satisfy a game’s 32-bit dependencies. The details vary by distribution; use the project’s compile and installation guide for its documented build and multiarch instructions.

A documented board and suitable build path

The project’s Raspberry Pi build guide covers Pi 2, Pi 3, and Pi 4. It says Pi 0 and Pi 1 cannot use the Dynarec because they lack NEON support. That qualification concerns the Dynarec; it should not be read as verification that the documented build steps work identically on every Pi model or other ARM board.

Working graphics support

Graphics can be a separate obstacle even when Box86 and the game’s libraries are in place. Many games require OpenGL, while some ARM platforms provide only OpenGL ES or have problematic OpenGL support. The project notes that gl4es may be needed in some cases. Check the graphics capabilities and driver for your specific OS and board, then look for compatibility reports using that same graphics setup.

Box86 or Box64? Match the tool to the program

Program architecture Relevant project What to check
32-bit x86 Box86 A 32-bit-capable ARM userspace and the program’s required libraries.
x86_64 Box64 Whether the program and its dependencies are supported by Box64.
A software stack containing both 32-bit x86 and x86_64 programs Potentially Box86 and Box64 Which architecture each component uses; Box64 does not replace Box86 for 32-bit x86 programs.

The Box86 project distinguishes Box86 for 32-bit x86 from Box64 for x86_64, and says 32-bit x86 programs still need Box86 even where Box64 is used. Check the architecture of the actual program rather than relying on labels such as “Linux game.” See the project README for its description of the two projects.

What this means for Steam games on ARM Fedora

A community question asks whether x86 Steam games can run on ARM Fedora, but that question is not evidence that Steam or a particular title works with Box86. The useful first checks are the game’s binary architecture, whether the Fedora installation or another environment provides the required 32-bit userspace and libraries, whether the game’s graphics requirements can be met, and whether there is a compatibility report for a matching setup. A result for one game or distribution should not be assumed to apply to another.

In particular, distinguish the question “Can Box86 run this 32-bit x86 Linux program?” from the broader question “Can I use this Steam game on my ARM Fedora installation?” The latter depends on the complete software stack and the individual title; the available project information does not establish general Steam-client or Steam-game support on ARM Fedora.

How to assess a particular game

  1. Identify the game’s architecture. If its Linux program is 32-bit x86, Box86 is the relevant project; if it is x86_64, look at Box64 instead. A stack with both architectures may need both tools.
  2. Confirm the environment. Determine the board and Linux distribution, then establish whether the system has a 32-bit ARM userspace or a supported multiarch or chroot arrangement. Check that the game’s required 32-bit libraries are present.
  3. Check the graphics path. Find out whether the game needs OpenGL and whether the board’s driver provides the required support. OpenGL ES-only or problematic OpenGL implementations may require additional compatibility software such as gl4es.
  4. Compare compatibility reports carefully. Look for the same or similar board, OS, graphics driver, and game version in the project’s compatibility information. A report from a different setup is a useful lead, not a promise that it will work for you.
  5. Follow the project’s build guidance for your target. The Box86 compile guide gives Pi-specific and multiarch instructions. They are project documentation, not a guarantee of success on an unlisted board or distribution.

What the performance claim does—and does not—say

The Box86 README says its ARM dynamic recompiler provides “a speed boost between 5 to 10 times faster than only using the interpreter.” This is the project’s general comparison of its Dynarec with its own interpreter, stated in the live README accessed in 2026. It is not a benchmark for a particular Raspberry Pi, game, frame rate, or comparison with native ARM execution. The cited project material does not establish a Pi-specific independent gaming benchmark, so no particular gameplay speed or smoothness can be inferred from that figure.
